-Cain- It was strange walking into the building where the important council meetings were being held. It was in the middle of the human city, yet it looked just like any other building. However, the place was filled with tension. As I walked inside, my parents, Carter and his Beta, were already waiting there in front of the staircase leading up to the meeting room. Willow walked on one side of me, and Henry on the other. There was such an angry energy swirling between not just me and Carter, but Henry and his older brother too. Yet my parents gave me a smile before we all ascended the staircase and walked into the room filled with council members standing around. They had changed the room, so instead of one long table going down the room, they had placed a table at the far end, and only a few seats for the most powerful alphas stood ready. The rest gathered behind them as they went to find their seats. On the sidelines were seats for my parents and our betas. Willow took a seat, but s
-Cain- “And what will your first order as king be?” one of the older alphas asked. “To protect our kind. I want us to take the rogues weird behavior more seriously and get it under control.” “You mean you will order a war?” “Not war. Protection,” I corrected. “I want more capable fighters out there to take charge and bring the cities under control. They used to be run by lone wolves who never bothered anyone, but now the rogues have gotten so bold as to take over. We need to stop them before the cities become completely unsafe for all wolves.” The council nodded approvingly. “Where will you get the fighters?” another alpha asked. “I would ask the other alphas. I would ask them for the fighters they could spare.” “You would want all these different fighters to work together?” “In a time where things are dangerous and tricky, us wolves can come together. We have shown that. We have proven we can stand shoulder to shoulder in trying times, despite the packs we belong to,” I expla
-Willow-We were all nervous as we waited for Carter’s interview to conclude, but once it did, we were all called inside. We took our seats again as Carter and Cain stood in front of the alphas, ready to hear their verdict. I focused on Cain, but as I did, I noticed Carter looking my way. Our eyes locked, and I felt a strange pain in my heart. I had never felt that way when we looked at each other, but I could also see pain in his eyes. Nonetheless, I hadn’t chosen to go around sleeping with a lot of people. Even if he felt hurt by me, it didn’t excuse his behavior. I looked away, focusing on my father, who cleared his throat, looking at the princes.“Now we have come to a decision,” he stated. “Some didn’t think we should continue, that Prince Carter is still the obvious choice.”I noticed the brothers glancing at each other, but then my father smiled, and I knew what his choice had been.“But most of us thought Prince Cain should at least have a chance to show what he is capable of.
-Cain- I walked into our bedroom and saw Willow lying on her stomach, reading a book. She looked so adorable with her feet in the air, swinging them back and forth. It had been a few days since the meeting, and despite us agreeing we should talk more, we had been busy. The pack always needed our attention, and I had gotten into contact with my old crew, the ones I had had to leave when my father called me home. They were wolves not belonging to any packs out there fighting to keep peace, and I knew they needed help. It was why they had reached out, but I couldn’t leave now. I had a trial in front of me and a pregnant mate. Alphas were completely incapable of leaving their pregnant mates for longer periods of time, so I knew I wasn’t going anywhere. Yet the situation out there was worsening, and I wasn’t going to be king for a long time. Even if I was chosen by the council, my father wasn’t old. He was still going to lead, so I needed to figure something out. I was going to the castle
-Willow-“Why are you staring at me? Eva?”I called out to my friend as she scrutinized my flat stomach while she sat in front of me. Her arms were resting on her legs, and she was leaning forward, observing me.“Eva?” I called again.“Shh, I’m trying to connect to it,” she told me.“Excuse me?”“I am trying to connect to the little clump inside you,” she whispered.“You’re trying to connect... to a very tiny thing inside me?” I asked in disbelief.“Yes, it’s important she knows who her aunt is and that she always comes to me if her mother is being too controlling.”“Me?” I exclaimed.Eva smiled at me and then focused on my stomach.“You do know it could be a boy, right?” I asked.“No, it’s a girl, I can feel it,” she said, making me laugh.“You feel nothing! Could you stop that? I am sure Cain wouldn’t enjoy you trying to turn the child against him and recognize you as the father instead.”“I would be a wonderful father, a better one than Cain,” she stated, leaning back and throwing
-Willow- I was getting up later, feeling more tired these days, and so I ate breakfast alone this time when a pack member came to inform me that I had a visitor. “A visitor?” I was confused. “Yes, an older luna,” she said. “Older…” I realized who it was and hurried out of my seat. I went to the entrance of the house, where my mother stood, looking around and assessing everything. I knew she already deemed the house unworthy of a future queen, but I really liked it. It was smaller than I was used to, but it had a cozy vibe. More members had come to the house, and it was starting to fill with life. Yet I was uncertain why my mother had come. “Mother,” I called as I walked closer, and my mother smiled when she saw me. When I was close enough, she pulled me into a hug before releasing me and then looking me up and down. “How are you feeling?” she asked. “So far, good.” “Has a doctor taken a look at you?” “We still need one for the pack, but I will get checked out soon,” I assured
-Cain-“Where are they?” I yelled, throwing my fist against the rogue’s face and seeing his head fly to the side before whipping back and continuing his cruel laughter. “Where?”I hit him again and again, his head always whipping back, ready to receive more. It didn’t matter I had beaten him beyond recognition. He kept laughing, and it annoyed me greatly. I was about to hit him again when Bran came up behind me, grabbing my shoulder. I turned around and saw him shake his head.“You can’t mean I should stop,” I panted.“Stop,” was all he said.I turned to the rogue, who could barely see out of one eye. We had him tied up and drugged with wolfsbane so he couldn’t change, yet I could see that almost happiness in his eyes at hearing Bran ordering me to step back.“This isn’t over,” I promised him before I took a few steps back, turning and then following Bran out of the dark room.I closed the metal door, and then I saw the dark look on his face.“I can get the answer from him. I can find
-Willow-I sipped that awful tea again, feeling less inclined to drink it, but I couldn’t get my mother’s words out of my head. I knew Cain just didn’t want to lose me, but I wondered how he would really react if I either lost the pup or if it came out to be a girl. My nervousness was killing me, and I was starting to feel a slight turn in my stomach as if I should throw up, but nothing was coming up through my throat yet. The tea wasn’t making it easier. Though the powder had no taste, it still felt like drinking acid because I knew something was in the tea that was trying to alter my body. It didn’t feel good, and it took me ages to drink it this time. When I was done, I went to find Cain and Henry, who were both working in the office. I had taken a small break from the work to go drink the tea, and when I came back, they were almost arguing, which surprised me since they never seemed to argue. I looked confused between them, but they didn’t even notice me.“What is going on?” I ask

Want to learn what happened with Carter and his mate Sara at the party? -Carter- My heart froze as we stared into each other’s eyes. Hers were such a deep green, and I loved them from the moment I saw them. She gave me a nervous smile, clearly trying to ignore the message our wolves were giving us in our heads, and sped off with the glass on her tray. I kept looking after her, feeling an undeniable urge to follow her. “Carter!” my brother called, and I turned my head. “Huh?” I answered. “Come on, it’s us next,” Cain told me. “Um, yeah, just say hello from me,” I replied before taking off, hearing him call after me, but I couldn’t stop now. Every nerve in my body was vibrating, telling me to go find my mate. I had seen the way she had gone, leaving the ballroom, and as I came into the hallway, it was much easier to follow her scent. I found her in the kitchen, getting more glasses for the party, and hearing the servants work. I made sure not to enter and instead crept back a litt
-Cain- I watched Weston hold one of my daughters over his head, making a funny face at her and making her laugh. It brought warmth to my heart watching it all happen, yet it was hard to shake the worry seeing my mother so close to my other daughter, whom I had reluctantly allowed her to hold. My daughters were only over a year old, but Carter had lived in this house for a good while now with his own mate, who had just given birth to a son, and it seemed to be okay. Surprisingly enough, everything was going okay, but I was never allowing my mother to be alone with my children, which I had made very clear to Willow. Yet it was hard to resist her when she told me to give it all a chance—to give my mother one. I couldn’t forgive her, but I saw now the benefits of letting her close because she was different. As I truly looked at her with my daughter, I saw she was different because she was allowed to be happy. Therefore, I knew I had to try, at least because I knew better than anyone wha
-Willow- It was rather surprising how fast everything happened, and soon the queen was confided in the palace, confided to the section where her room was, and confided to the lower floor of that section. She had to have her meals brought, but this gave her a chance to be with Weston, and I saw how grateful he was for that. He even hugged Carter so hard, who was there to see the transfer happen, but Cain refused. Weston understood that, and so did his mate, but I could see how much they wished for Cain to be more accepting of all of this as well. For now, this was how it was going to be, and Carter and I walked together through the palace, both having homes to get back to. “So, do I ever get to be properly introduced to your mate?” I teased. “I have actually convinced her to move here with me. She is just nervous because we come from two different worlds.” “I can understand that. But then maybe we should all have dinner together.” “I am not sure we can lure Cain here. He is… determ
-Willow- The news spread quickly and was as shocking to me as it was to everyone else. No one had expected the queen would go so far, and yet as the days dragged on, no one was sure how to punish the queen. The council and the princes were completely divided, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit bad. Now that I knew there was no longer any threat out there to me or my family and the mystery had been solved, I simply stopped being angry. I knew the queen should still be punished, but she wouldn’t have done what she did if she hadn’t been forced to smile and nod through the pain others had put her through. Weston had made a good point to me, I could have been the queen. I could have become just as desperate… “It’s really unbelievable she did it,” Eva said, breaking me free of my trance. She sat in front of me in a small café we had agreed to meet at so I could get out of the house. Cain and I rarely spoke at the moment, and Carter had gone to be with his mate, living with her, though I
-Cain- I was so confused by why Weston had asked to be alone with us. He even asked us to stand up, and we all met in a small circle beside the table. Carter and I looked at him with a puzzled expression, but I could sense something strange on Willow’s end, yet besides her, only Weston didn’t appear perplexed by all of this. Even our mother seemed unsure about what was going on. “Why did you send them all out?” Carter asked, speaking the question that lingered on my tongue. “Because I wanted to do this in private before…” Weston looked at Willow, and I glanced at her, but when she felt my eyes on her, she turned to give me an apologetic look. “Weston,” my mother called, and I noticed her turning slightly scared. “Okay, what is going on?” I asked, needing some answers now. “You have to admit it,” he insisted, focusing on my mother. “Admit what? Admit what, Mom?” I pressed, and both Carter and I focused on her, but she looked away, not meeting our eyes. “What the hell is going o
-Cain- “Goddess, look at your faces!” Willow exclaimed. “You’re starting to do serious damage!” As Carter and I sat down to eat, Willow came to inspect me, tilting my head to the side and taking in the cuts and the swelling. I grabbed her hands, kissed them, and then pulled her down on my lap. “We are fine,” I assured her. “We will heal,” Carter added. “Why are you hitting each other so hard?” “It’s called practice. We are keeping our skills sharp.” “But Carter can’t even open his right eye, and the cut on your lip is so swollen, I fear you can’t eat!” she scolded. “Eat the food or your—” I didn’t get to finish that sentence as she placed a hand over my mouth. “Not funny.” I pulled her hand down. “I think it was rather funny.” “What won’t the council think when they see you like that?” she murmured. “What do you mean?” She glanced between Carter and me, who looked puzzled at her. “You didn’t notice the meeting the council has called? Have you two been that distracted late
-Cain- “I don’t see the point in this,” my brother said as we stepped into the little gym we had in the house. I placed myself on the blue mat, jumping a little up and down and getting ready, yet Carter was standing at a distance, wearing sunglasses inside and a big hoodie over his training clothes that I had forced him to change into. He didn’t just look hungover, he was perfect for putting on a poster that advised people not to drink. He looked like a fucking mess. “You need it,” I told him. “Does it look like I want to workout right now?” he asked. “We are fighting and keeping our skills sharp,” I explained. “Why?” I didn’t really know what to say. What Willow had confessed to me scared the living shit out of me. Was my brother truly so depressed that he had become suicidal? Willow feared it, and we weren’t able to get Carter to react until the next day, and then we didn’t know what to say. So, I thought, after two days of leaving it alone, we needed to get him going again. Th
