I felt my head banging, as I turned the door knob to the office, where the final interview was being held. The secretary's face expression had lowered my self-esteem the more I was late, that being considered.
All eyes were fixed on me, as I took the last available seat out of three meant for applicants. Four judges sat opposite side, three females and one male.
I knew I was done for as females are notoriously known to be more fierce.
Soon, it was my turn and everything went upside down. I could only give jumbled answers to some of the questions asked.
This was the end of me, I thought, when a female judge lit up the tensed mood and asked if it was true my mother ran a fried chicken shop.
I gave an affirmative answer, wondering how that question was related.
" I dislike fried chicken" she gave a huge mocking smile as she left while the other judges dispersed.
I left the office, letting out a deep sigh as I walked down the hallway when a thought popped into my mind.
" Jesse"
He did tell me he would call, but I gave in to the urge of going to see him.
Jesse forbade me from checking up on him at the office, as I remembered him giving me a stern warning not to.
" Don't, He's going to get mad"
Ignoring the voice screaming inside of me, I stopped at the door and took my time before opening it when someone did instead.
" Sorry" I uttered softly, bowing my head halfway. I saw Jesse, his back turned at me, laughing wholeheartedly.
' He seemed less busy'
I appeared behind him and tugged his shirt, his happy face sunk as he saw me, and in a low tone, he said " What the hell are you doing in here? "
" I missed you" I replied, hugging him. He recoiled from my embrace and dragged me towards the door with my bag.
He stopped at the end of the hallway, gazed at me with bloodshot eyes, and pinned me to the wall.
" I sure made myself clear not to come to the office"
This was no other way to treat a criminal!
My phone began to vibrate and he released his hard grip on me. It was a private number. I picked it up and it was the man who wanted to press charges for assault. I coughed voluntarily and told him to call back in a few minutes.
Jesse had withdrawn a few steps backward from me with his head bowed. I stared deep into his soul, speculating what could have triggered this beast side of him.
Definitely, that was not Jesse, a few seconds ago.
" I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... ", he sobered, and moved towards me. I flinched, this violent side of him wasn't manifesting for the first time.
" Mr Jesse, you have got someone waiting.. " A lady in her early twenties had walked in on us and stopped talking abruptly, noticing Jesse had company.
" I'm sorry, I thought she was gone " she said again, acting conspicuously while exchanging glances between Jesse and I.
Jesse, who had begun to act strangely, turned to look at me, " Go home! ", he heckled in a strange voice, leaving with the lady while I was left alone at the end of the hallway.
I stuffed myself into the elevator trying to get back home. Back from the embarrassment, I leaned my back against the end of the elevator.
Three skinny ladies shoved their bodies into the elevator. They looked like my exact type of what I had been praying for, but then they started to gossip.
" I heard she is his ex girlfriend " , the first one said.
" Woah! she probably came to beg him to take her back, now that he is getting married " the last one replied in agreement.
Holy crap!
Gossips and they're jumping into conclusions.
For a moment, I pitied whoever it was they were talking about and bent my head in shame.
Then the lady who had stayed quiet during the whole discussion spoke up, " I hope you do remember his fiance is no one to be messed with. So, do stay clear of discussing about Mr Jesse's private life. "
Mr Jesse!
I was dumbfounded and confused.
Thinking if it was my Jesse or someone else, I clicked on the elevator button to drop off as I bumped into one of the ladies.
" Sorry" I took the second elevator to go back up immediately after I dropped from the first.
My goddess instinct came back, ' You should have followed him back then, he was sure keeping something away from you. '
I ran all the way to Jesse's office and saw him busy having a discussion with an unknown woman. He looked happy and all smiles. I moved closer to know what was happening when he slipped a card into her delicate hands.
" Thank you for inviting me, Congratulations once again. "
I was sure he was not having any party or maybe he kept a family function from me again!
I took a step forward when a woman with a foxy hairstyle, beaming with smiles, walked up to him and gave him a small kiss on the cheek, which he returned ON THE LIPS!
I lowered my shoulders, disappointed, shuffled my feet towards him and said, " Happy Married life. " The lady beside him stopped me and said in a low pitched tone, " Not yet. "
Woah! I was furious.
Did this woman just secretly throw a shade at me?
I turned to stare at Jesse. He was shocked, but he could not move from his spot. Rather, he behaved like he did not know me from Adam.
That was it.
How could I let him get away with this?
I moved closer to the woman with the foxy hairstyle and whispered into her left ear, " I am sure you are aware that I'm his girlfriend ", moved back to face Jesse.
" I always knew you'd pick the least attractive, you just did me a big favour by leaving. You were just a scumbag who always resorted to violence. I look forward to your new punch bag" I batted my eyelashes at the astounded woman beside him and chuckled softly.
" I suppose you have a lot of money, I'm sure that's what he's after" the other staff had gathered and began to murmur among themselves.
I took a final look at Jesse and disappeared into the crowd.
.....
The bus was crammed. I shuffled my tired feet to secure an available seat when I was pushed over. An elderly woman who had just entered the bus not long ago, sat comfortably on the seat I had wanted to secure.
Gosh! I had to stand throughout the journey as terrible seats available anymore. I sighed softly and made my way to the back of the bus, for a comfy stand.
I had stood there not long ago when I heard the shutters of a mobile repeatedly.
Not again!
Why do I have to meet with this?
I studied the man beside me. He wore a nose mask and a face cap which helped in covering his identity, and faced the opposite direction.
'You think you can fool me? ' raising my inner voice beastly. I gave him a smirk, raising my brows as I tapped him on the shoulder. He stared at me for a short while and looked away, while I noticed his dainty eyes.
' Do you want to pretend now? '
I pursed my lips towards his ears and requested him to stop whatever he was doing. He eyed me, surprising, maintaining his stand that he didn't know what I was talking about.
"Pervert! "
He glared at me at the sound of that word, and I returned with a dreadful look.
Now, I was about to let go when he said, " What would I want to do with someone like you, fatty? "
I burned with anger and began to hit him, causing a huge commotion. Then I felt a huge hand grab my behind. I looked backward and it was another guy who did. Knowing it was planned, I took the book he carried and hit him with it several times, till it became an old shade of itself.
With him just covering his face, that proved my theory the more, they both knew about it.
The bus stopped and both of them jumped down, running tirelessly since they knew I was going to drag them to the police station.
The people on the bus applauded me for being a brave girl, and I just gave back a slight smile raising the corners of my mouth as if I had had enough of the day.
Scumbags
I guess there was an advantage to being chubby as my mind wandered to when I gave each of them a harsh push, while I walked home.
Lucas Quinn walked into the conference room filled with heads of departments and directors, who in turn stood up immediately after his entrance. Bowing their heads, he sat down and gestured for them to do the same. They had gathered up for the preparation of the mid-year appreciation party for Quinns House, a proposal which they were yet to draft out. Lucas had denied all of their proposal ideas for the party and everyone was drained. It was one of the many things they dreaded about him. His unflappable spirit. They had a month until the event, and they have not come up with a theme or concept for it. Knowing that kept them on edge since they knew he was going to keep them them on their toes soon. The conference lights went off, leaving the projector rays the only light in the room. He cleared his throat and all eyes were fixed on him awaiting his speech. Tired eyes and frustrated expressions laid under the guise of their focused eyes. " No one with any more concept for the eve
Tasha slammed the front door shut, breathing heavily as she sat on the bare floor. Why would he chase her with a car? Mrs Rowan walked up to her, which made her bolt. " Is something wrong? " she stared at her with suspicion. Tasha looked at her mother, feeling abashed, stood up to her feet and walked away. A few minutes later, she heard a familiar voice at the door. Zoey stood by the door, hands filled with a grocery bag. " You look like a chicken drenched in water"Tasha turned her face away in shame, and Zoey dumped the grocery bag on the side of the bed, moving closer to her until she noticed a considerable amount of drops on the sheets. Her eyes swarmed with tears as it ran down her cheeks. " I sincerely thought we were getting married this year" she sniffled her runny nose out loudly. Zoey offered her shoulders and she leaned her head on it. " I knew he was up to no good, the unnecessary rules were the hook" Zoey growled, eyes burning with anger while she patted the back
The only contract Tasha thought she would be getting was from a publishing company, but here she was a contract to seduce the most eligible bachelor in the state. She thought about it while she filled in for her mother's part-timer, who had flunked out a minute before the store opened for a toothache excuse. Her mother noticed her gloomy expression and her deep sigh for the millionth time. " At this rate, we might as well start eating salt itself, " she whispered sarcastically, and Tasha sighed again, realizing that she had been rolling the pieces of chicken in a large bowl of salt instead of flour. " I'm here you know, you can tell me anything " Mrs Rowan smiled affectionately at her, which she faked back. She could not even tell Zoey about it. She could never let her mother in on the contract issue. She'd know about the assault charge and things would go eerily. She was going to figure this out on her own. She packed the left overs of the last customers, washed all the plates
" Miss Rowan, " a voice called out, and Tasha quivered. She held her fast-beating chest with her left hand. It was Ethan's secretary seated in a fancy car. She entered the car and slammed the door loudly. She had just dodged from the man who had chased her with a car the other day. She could have never imagined him coming to look for her at the library. She had managed to recognize him in the last few minutes. She could have made the mistake of bumping into him, before she covered her face with the scarf, which she had brought along and tiptoed out of the library. She could have sworn her heart was torn in pieces when Ethan's secretary called out to her. Rubbing her temple, she turned to him and commented, " You can call me Tasha, please. "Formalities made her seem older, and she hated that feeling. " Call me Nate too", he replied, and laughed. Releasing a long yawn, she drifted off to sleep. He nudged her arm, waking her up " Tasha, we're here. "Tasha and Nate laughed heartil
Tasha's POV Waiting for him to grab my lips with his enticing mouth, he stopped abruptly, making my knees weak. He walked away from me, this time further, fist clenched. " I'm giving you a chance to prove yourself to me, it's not too late to back down. " " No, I can do this. " I could see his ears turning red as he walked out of the room. 'Was he the one seducing or the other way round?. " He returned almost immediately and threw a bag at me. " Change into that and meet me at the pool outside. " He maneuvered his way out of the room through the petals, which served as a closing. It was a swimming costume which I had to change into. I had hoped that I was up for grabs. He sure took me on a long journey during the lesson. I had held myself from grabbing his lips while he teased me. It was pure torture. Seduction is pure manipulation! I came here thinking seduction was mainly flirting and would have ended up in bed with Ethan before realizing that the deed was done. '
Tasha walked in elegantly, all eyes fixed on her, while some murmured as she walked past them. She spotted Lucas at the end of the hall and struggled to find her way to where he could see her. She knocked over a tray filled with glasses of wine, which a male server carried, spilling them all over him. " Oh! Sorry I.... I didn't mean to" she muttered in a low tone, while a female server comes to his aid, picking up the broken pieces of the wine glasses. Tasha looked around and no one was concerned with what had happened. Instead, they had moved further from them to avoid getting spilled on. Tasha bent down to help the female usher in picking up the broken pieces when a shard got stuck in one of her fingers. " Fuck! " she cried in agony, releasing the piece of broken glass she held in her hand. She raised her head to see Lucas staring at her from afar, but turned away when she saw him. Instead she asked the server where the bathroom was situated and ran towards it. She tri
Lucas POV I could swear with my fortune that I never thought I could see her again. This time, she looked curvy, but she didn't seem to know me, or she played that way. Her eyes, the structure of her face and the voice were so familiar! Everything looked so surreal. I touched her, she bled! She looked somewhat fat or curvy, I don't care about the body type, but every other thing was familiar. I don't know why I had to throw myself at her at that event, the magical attraction I felt towards her was still there. Till now, Lyanna hasn't shown up, not even in my dreams. She had always been my shadow ever since her death, and I feel guilty for that, but she showed up again? I bet if she had shown up in her skinny skin, she would have been noticed by my friends at least. I sunk into the chair holding my head in my palms as I began to flashback to the day Lyanna died. I had caught her in bed with someone else; that act would not have made me so mad if it was somebody I didn't kn
Tasha's POV Never knew picking up an outfit was this hard, after much deliberation; I settled for a fitted gray shirt with its knee length skirt and short jacket coupled with gray heels. I walked out, and Mother was wowed, but then a frown followed. " You've got a spoiler alert" she complained. " Really, anything wrong with my outfit? " I checked myself out to fish out any mistakes I might have drafted in a hurry. I was nervous. This is my first job since college and I wasn't really looking forward to it. Job hunting hasn't been easy, but getting a job at Quinns feels like a reward for all my troubles. I really wished to become an established writer. My unpublished books felt so good to me, that I'll never understand why I keep getting rejected. " Everything is perfect but you need a bag. Have some breakfast before you go" Mother sure had a way to lift up my mood. I released a deep sigh of relief, knowing that there was no fashion error. I had stayed up, watched endles
