Oliver's P.O.V.

My stomach rolled as I sat with Maddie, fighting the internal battle to keep the contents of my stomach inside my body. The twisting of my organs made my eyes squeeze closed tighter as my mouth filled with saliva.

I could hear my mate muttering away as she went through the fridge and cabinets, but I didn't want to move just yet.

"You're going crazy, Lana. You're just paranoid." She mumbled as her footsteps got closer. I cracked one eye open to see her rummaging in the kitchen trash with her lips turned down with disgust. When she found nothing, she stood up straight with a sigh before moving to wash her hands.

I closed my eyes again, enjoying the feeling of my mate's pup as she ran a brush through my dirty fur. The drawing she had started for me this morning was long forgotten on the table in front of her.

Lana. My mate's name was Lana. It was a beautiful name that seemed to fit her perfectly.

I let out a sigh of contentment as Lana moved over and sat down next to us, her foot brushing against my side as she did so. This was it, right here. This was why the Goddess brought me back. This was my family.

My body stretched out further as Maddie moved to brush the matted fur of my belly, only for a sharp cramp in my stomach to make me whimper. Based on how Lana had inspected every item in the kitchen, I had been right not to eat any of their food. I would have just scared her more.

Unfortunately, I was so hungry that I couldn't focus on anything last night, other than the feeling of my empty insides and the loud whale calls it was letting out as it threatened to start eating the organs around it if I didn't fill it soon.

As soon as I had come back into the living room, the sight of a furry little rodent running out from under the couch seemed to be my only option. Its bald patches, snaggle-tooth, and bulging right eye made it the most unappealing prey of my life, but I was starving.

I had eaten raw animals thousands of times before in my wolf form. Unfortunately, this particular rat tasted about as right as it looked. My guts twisted at the memory of the critter's poisonous flavor.

"Maddie?" Lana called out as her daughter continued to brush through my hair, gently stroking my cheek with her other hand at my whimper. "Is that my hairbrush?"

Maddie froze, and I opened my eyes, picking my head up as I stared at her retreating hand, willing it to come back and chase this sickly feeling away with her soft touch as she combed my fur.

"He needed it, momma. You always brush my hair when I don't feel good." Maddie explained, but by the look on her face, she was not sorry at all. The innocent smile made me want to laugh, and I reached over, licking her hand in gratitude. She was going to be trouble when she was a teenager.

Lana let out a sigh, and I turned to look up at her, my nose bumping into her knee. "You're right, but I think he needs a bath first."

I could feel myself perking up at the thought of a nice long shower after. It would feel so good to let the hot water hit my knotted back muscles. I was mostly healed, but as she stood and walked down the hallway, I made sure to give a little extra drag to my leg and extenuate my limp, so she wouldn't know how fast I had recovered.

Lana looked back at me with her eyebrows pulled together. I stared at her skeptical face for a long moment in awe of how beautiful she was before I realized that I had reacted to her words as if I had understood her.

She had said she was going to give me a bath, and I had gotten up and followed her like a lost puppy. Lana shook her head as she spun back around and opened the bathroom door. Her spine straightened. I watched as goosebumps covered her arms, and I felt myself go on alert. Was there something she could sense that I couldn't?

"Maddie, come on in here. You wanted him, so you need to come and take care of him until it is time for him to go home. He's yours right now." She called out, glancing down the hallway like she was expecting the boogie man to pop out...or a naked version of myself.

The rushed scampering of little feet heading our way overpowered the disappointment I felt at Lana wanting me to leave.

As Maddie barreled down the hallway I stretched out, making sure I would be able to reach her if she were to trip and fall. The hallway was very narrow compared to my size, so it wouldn't have been hard to catch her before she collided with a wall, but my large frame would end up being a problem for the small bathtub I spied inside the room.

"He's not mine," Maddie mumbled as she ran her hand over my head. I leaned into her touch. "He's yours, and I'm yours. So, I'm his too."

I blinked a few times in stunned silence as I watched Maddie move past me and over to sit on the lid of the toilet seat. Children could be scary with how intuitive they were.

Lana rubbed her fingers on her eyebrows, her curly brown hair falling over her shoulder. "I don't even know what to do with that statement. I swear, I feel like I'm the only sane one in this house." My head tilted to the side as she dropped her hand and looked down at me. "And, now I'm talking to someone's giant pet wolf, so clearly I'm not doing too hot in the mental health category either."

My jaw tightened as I moved past her, annoyed by her referring to me as a pet once again.

'Although, I am acting like one.' I thought to myself as I brushed by her thighs and walked right into the bathtub, my fur hanging over the side of the tub as I squeezed to sit down.

As soon as she turned the water on, I ducked my head, trying to hide my embarrassment as I peed in the tub. It wasn't my fault though. I had been holding it for hours and didn't know when I would get another chance. Worse than that was that I had done the same in the kitchen sink last night, just seconds before she had walked in. I had used the thunder as my chance to rinse the basin because I couldn't risk using the toilet or opening the doors and waking her up.

"Oh, I'm sorry, buddy," Lana whispered, finally getting the courage up to pet the top of my head for the first time. "After this, we can go for a walk to dry you off, and you can do your business."

I appreciated that, but more so, I needed to use the opportunity outside to hunt for food. From what I had seen yesterday, they didn't have much left. It was mainly a large bag of rice and some cans of soup.

My pride was taking a beating as she sprayed me off. I didn't want to look at her. While her hands felt amazing as she rubbed them through my fur, not bothering to waste any of her shampoo on me, I still felt humiliated.

It was not helping anything.

One day, preferably soon, I was going to tell her the truth. It would in no way be romantic. I would shift into a human, tell her she was my soulmate, and she would think back on how she had to drag me in the house, listen to me whining and whimpering like a baby, clean my wounds, how I had scared her in the middle of the night by standing naked in her kitchen, and now I had peed in her bathtub.

It was like a constant onslaught of humiliation and emasculation, just one thing after another.

"Alright, big guy," She cooed in a baby voice as she lifted my chin slowly to spray the top of my head. Another spasm rushed through my guts, and I let out a whimper as my mouth began to water, the pain becoming too much.

I ripped my head away from her delicate hand, just in time to vomit into the bathtub, next to the drain. My throat burned, and my eyes watered as I emptied my stomach.

"Oh my god! Is that a rat tail?" Lana asked in disgust as she stared down at the mess I made.

“Ew!" Maddie cried out as she looked over her mom's shoulder.

Unable to face her, I looked in the opposite direction, dropping the top of my head against the shower wall with a resounding thud.

This day was just getting worse and worse.

Lana’s P.O.V. “He needs a name you know,” I said to Maddie as she walked next to me, her hand in mine. It had only been a day with him, but I was already feeling this pull demanding that I never return him to his owner. As wary as I was of him at first, now I wanted to be selfish and keep him as our wolf. The large beast trotted along, on the other side of Maddie, scanning the area carefully. He had gone off a ways to go the bathroom and when we had followed him, he let out a growl that I hadn’t heard before, telling us to stay back as he bared down. It should have scared me and made me worry for the safety of my daughter but for some reason, it just made both of us burst into giggles. When he returned, his head was down and he refused to look at us. It was the most bizarre reaction I had ever seen from an animal. “That’s silly. He has a name.” Maddie said as she stopped to pick up a rock, not caring about the critters beneath it that quickly burrowed into the ground. I eyed her h

Lana's P.O.V. I turned my head to the side, feeling my clit throb with pleasure and disappointment as I opened my eyes. The white bed was gone, and the grey blanket that I had grown used to stare back at me mockingly. The missing warmth of his body on mine sent a chill over me. My hand had found its way between my legs in my sleep, reminding me just how long it had been since I had been touched, even by myself. The wetness that coated my fingers had me closing my eyes again, willing myself to fall back into my dream to pick up where we left off. Yet, as the sleep cleared from my mind the dream stayed with me. I could remember every touch, every kiss, and every thrust as he made my mind melt. My fingers pressed together, and I began to rub small but hard circles against my clit. My free hand gripped the sheets tightly until I could no longer feel my fingers as I imagined the sinfully sexy stranger moving down my body until his head was between my thighs. I wanted to feel his mouth a

Oliver’s P.O.V. I sat back on my haunches, watching with amusement as Lana moved around the animal with the steak knife, trying to figure out how to start. I wanted to help her, but there was only so much that could be done in my current form. She had just been staring at the animal for twenty minutes. The meat was getting cool and the longer she waited the harder it would be to get the skin off. I let out a grumble before getting off the porch and moving over to the animal. The sooner she did what she had to do to fill their freezer, the sooner I could eat the rest. She froze as I latched my teeth around the animal's back leg, pulling it to the side so she had room to start skinning it. Our eyes met, and she watched me cautiously. It seemed as though she was expecting me to tell her what to do as she stared at me with raised eyebrows. I dropped the leg 'huffing' at her as I stomped my front paw into the ground. "Well, what is that supposed to mean? Eat it if you're so hungry! I d

Oliver's P.O.V. My legs propelled me forward, faster than I had ever run before. My body weaved in and out of the trees as I pushed toward my mate. Nothing would be harming them today, of that I was certain. I would destroy every wolf that even looked their way before I let my family be taken from me. The smell of the rogue grew stronger the closer I got to the house, and as their scent mixed and thickened, I knew they weren't alone. There were multiple, hunting together. Whether it was me they were after or Lana, I couldn't risk it. The putrid scent surrounded me as I reached the tree line of the house. I came to a stop before exposing myself in the open area behind the building. They were here. I could sense them slinking their way around my mate's den, looking for the best method to attack. It was rare for rogues to go after humans, but not unheard of. A small head popped up in the window with a bright smile, and I

Lana's P.O.V. The horrid sounds of the animals fighting outside had the small hairs on my arms and neck standing at attention. Each whimper and cry of pain made me flinch as I imagined my wolf hurt or possibly dead. There was a pain in my chest that restricted my breathing as I imagined anything happening to Olly. Maddie curled up in the bed. Her tear-streaked face and runny nose was a heartbreaking sight, but she kept calm as I walked into her room behind her and turned the television on. Even with the poor reception, the static-covered show was a relief as it helped to mask the growling. I was hoping the sound of the small picture box would distract her enough from what was happening outside for her to fall asleep. "I'll be right back. Try to go to sleep, okay?" I asked, but the sound of a wolf yowling in pain made my spine straighten. My heart was pushing me to grab my gun and go help, to protect Olly, but my brain was telling me not to get in the middle of a pack of wild wolve

Lana's P.O.V. The sound of Maddie giggling as she sprinted down the hallway made me wake. The blanket over me fell as I jumped to my feet searching for my weapon. I shoved my hand between the cushions, feeling that disgusting truth that I needed to vacuum the couch and armchair, but no gun. Not having time to waste, I picked the blanket up from the ground, pausing slightly when I realized it was the same one I had placed over our uninvited guest, but ignored it, more focused on the lack of anything metal falling from the fabric. If he had my weapon and my daughter, I was screwed. I grabbed the fire poker, holding it up like a bat as I moved around the corner to the hallway. The door to Maddie's room was open, and I tiptoed over quietly. He shouldn't have been able to move from the extent of his injuries, let alone walk all the way down the hallway. Maddie was talking, explaining how her doll used to be a princess but became a

  • The Wolf's Claim   Twelve: Oliver

Oliver's P.O.V. The entire time Lana was in the kitchen, she was watching me. Every few seconds, she would look up and find me with her beautiful pale green eyes narrowed at me. When the sun came in through the window, they almost appeared to be baby blue, taking my breath away. She was stunning. It was the glare she would send my way like she was waiting for me to attack one of them, that made me feel worried. I knew that trying to hide everything last night would mess with her head, but I also wasn't ready to tell her the truth. The probability of her shooting me was very high with how on edge she was. That was not something that I wanted to go through. As much as it pained me to say it, watching her move around the kitchen was torture. I kept picturing how her towel had fallen off two nights ago, and the way she confidently walked around naked as she dried her hair. It was imprinted in my brain as one of the best nights of my life. Maddie let out a groan as her mother placed a

Lana's P.O.V I couldn't help but watch Olly as he walked away toward the forest. His head was low, and his tail was tucked down like a beaten dog. My heart hurt as he got further away. The connection I felt to him was pulling, like a rubber band being stretched. The need to call him back was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't do it. How could I risk having a man I didn't know who could turn into a wolf around my daughter? She didn't know that he wasn't just an animal. A small part of my own brain was still denying that fact, but I wasn't stupid. There were too many things that signaled it wasn't my imagination. Having him listen and do as I said was the straw that broke the camel's back, confirming he understood me. I wanted answers, but I also wasn't ready for them. I could barely handle the world as I knew it. How could I justify adding werewolves to it? If they were real, what else was out there? My head shook as I tried to fight that train of thought. That was exactly wha

Oliver's P.O.V - 14 years later There wasn't a single person who knew where I was. I had snuck away in the middle of the night and left. I needed to get to her, and that desperate need caused me to chase her over a hundred miles away. I had been lying in bed next to my beautiful mate, and yet all I could think about was her. There was a desperate need to see her. My wolf was on edge and sad with her so far away. I hated that she left me. So, we went after her. The sun was beginning to rise, and I sat in the tree line impatiently, waiting for her to leave for the day. The door to her building was just barely visible, but I knew that as soon as she stepped out, I would be able to see her. She hadn't been responding to any of my messages, and it was driving me insane. A simple 'hello' or 'I'm okay' wouldn't be that hard. I would even accept a, 'please stop messaging me'. Having a baby who had been directly blessed by the Goddess was huge to our people, and I could only hope that they wouldn't put too much pressure on him. It had only been a few days, but I had already given up arguing with Oliver over the possibility that it could be a girl. He was so positive we would have a son, that he convinced me. We had picked out several names, prematurely as we hadn't even made it past the first trimester yet, but the excitement was driving us to do all the things they say you shouldn't. We told everyone, picked names, and started thinking about how we were going to design the nursery. The news that our house was next on the list to be worked on made me giddy. Everything was falling into place. The front door to the pack house slammed open, and I watched as several members of our pack split in different directions. The party was still in full swing, but no

  • The Wolf's Claim   Epilogue

Maddie's P.O.V. Twenty Years Later My fingers pulled at the hem of my dress as I sat sipping my champagne. I had thought attending my college roommate's wedding would be fun, but it was pretty boring. While I had imagined, men and women our age drinking, dancing, and flirting, it was the complete opposite. The best part about it was the food. They had invited their entire families but only a few friends. I grabbed another roll of bread from the basket on the table, ripping it up before popping small pieces into my mouth. I had learned my lesson before, getting caught stuffing my mouth at functions that had a lot of cameras. Those photos would haunt me for the rest of my life. But this, this was not a wedding to remember for anyone other than the couple. Which was as it should be. This was their night and money. The guests didn't matter to them in the couple's blissful bubble. But as one of their attendees, I could vouch that their guests sure were bored. The couple was swaying ba

Oliver's P.O.V. As much as I loved Aspen, I had to get out of there. We had grown up together, almost as siblings since her dad was the Beta and mine, the Alpha. But even as a kid, I could only take so much of her dramatics or lack of a filter. Things moved through her brain and out of her mouth without considering whether it was appropriate or hurtful. As a teenager, I heard way more about her sex life than I wanted to, and the last thing I wanted was to get suckered into sitting down and having to listen to her go on about her lack of sexual freedom while I was trying to eat my breakfast. Instead, I packed up the majority of the pancakes into a Tupperware as soon as they left the frying pan, much to Hudson's annoyance, and stole the bottle of syrup before dashing after Maddie. She screamed with joy as I threw her over my shoulder and carried her away from that clingy little pup, Nicholas. He really wasn't so bad, but I resented him for the idea that he could one day take her from

Lana's P.O.V. There was a collection of us, at least a hundred, who were going from house to house, tearing out all of the damaged sections and rebuilding them back up as quickly as possible. A few homes would have to be completely demolished, but we would have to come back to them. For now, we needed to get as many as we could into livable conditions, and as soon as possible, so our people could have a roof over their heads. It was bad enough that I had multiple strangers sleeping on my bedroom floor. Maddie was having a blast sleeping in the room with the other kids. It was like a giant slumber party every night. But even if I wanted to rest for a minute during the day, my bed was out of the question. Having strangers in my space, in mine and Oliver's personal bedroom, made it feel compromised. It was no longer my safe space. They were diluting his scent, and coming in and out at random times throughout the day. I had tried to close my eyes once for a quick nap, and as soon as t
