Emma felt her cheeks heat up at his comment, sure of the red color that was dominating her features. This man clearly knew how to woo his women. Before she could retort, she heard someone yell at her.
“Can I get a pitcher, miss?” It was a man holding out his card on the bar, awaiting her.
“I’ll be back in a minute.” She mumbled to Jamie before she headed toward her new customer.
Instantly after she’d uttered it, she clasped her eyes shut in regret. Why did she have to say that? That was her chance to get rid of him. Inwardly groaning, she poured the beer into the pitcher glass. She looked over her shoulder to see if Jamie was still there, and much to her dismay, he was. Why did she care if he was around? Was she looking forward to spending time with him?
If it weren’t for the fact that he selflessly put himself before that asshole, she would’ve hardly entertained him. Despite the fact that he looked incredibly attractive to her, with his dark brown hair falling on his forehead in thick strands, and his sharp jaw dusted with an enticing beard of the same color, she knew better than to get involved with her clientele.
Under newfound nervousness, she managed to strike her skin against the knife on her side.
“Careful there,” The customer smiled at her, although his eyes were drooping under the influence of alcohol.
“Here you go sir.” She said, as she handed him his order.
When she headed back to her original counter, her heart fell. He was nowhere in sight. Perhaps he was bored. A dejected sigh left her mouth upon the realization and right then, her eyes caught a hint of familiarity in the distance. She instantly recognised the dark haired man to be Jamie, and noticed that he was beckoning her.
Emma knew all too well what that invitation meant. He was calling her to a dark secluded space where nobody would catch them should they want to enjoy each other. Initial hesitation held her back, but alcohol had already entered her system, altering her judgment. Before reason could change her mind, she found herself walking towards him and thought she detected a hint of a smirk on his face at her advancement.
She felt the heat of his gaze as she made his way toward him. Emma was quick to realize that there was something about him that drew her towards him. Like many things in her life, this was yet another reaction she failed to comprehend. The closer she got to him, the more intense became her attraction for him. She simply couldn’t help herself.
As she finally reached him, his arm instantly reached around her waist, tugging her into the darkness. Pinning her to the wall behind, he let his arm rest against the side of her face, shielding her face from the onlookers. She felt her face flush as he cupped her cheek, running his thumb over her lips before his eyes shot up to meet hers. Despite the trepidations in her heart, she found herself nodding at him, giving him the necessary consent to claim her.
It had been too long since she let herself get intimate with a man like this. But his eyes bore certain secrecies that were too tempting to resist. Her hands itched to touch him, and it took every bit of resistance in her to stop herself from bringing his lips down to her.
Seeming to have noticed her agony, Jamie lowered his head, tilting her head ever so lightly so his lips could claim her full well. His lips felt hot and delectable, expertly moving against hers. He started off slowly, but soon, she felt his tongue against her lips, demanding hers. Giving in, she let him deepen the kiss, filling her veins with desire. Right then, she felt his other hand travel to her butt, giving her cheek a gentle squeeze. She couldn’t help but moan in delight, and he found the perfect opportunity to engulf her lower lip, gently nibbling on it, surely drawing some blood.
Suddenly, he broke away from her, as though trying to catch some air. She looked up at him in wonder, her body filling with longing and ecstasy. She couldn’t wait to have his lips on her again, but she was quick to notice that something was off with him. An astonished expression claimed his face, and he looked at her with his mouth agape. She ran her tongue over her lips in nervousness, and that’s when she realized her mistake.
Her eyes widened as she couldn’t feel the metallic taste on her lower lip from the blood drawn. Her wound had healed itself, and quite possibly right in front of his lips. She felt her heart hammering against her chest, realizing that her secret was out.
“You…” He said, “You are not human.”
His hand fell from her cheek and he leaned closer so as to make sure she could clearly hear him. “You are a fucking werewolf!”
“Sh!” Emma hushed, looking around in worry. Thankfully, no one seemed to hear what he just said. “Can you please be low?”
She saw as Jamie’s jaw clenched, the taut muscle under his skin twitching in suppressed anger. His hand wrapped around hers and he pressed his body closer to her, essentially trapping her.
“Where are you from?”
“What?” She asked in panic, struggling to break free of his grasp.
“Stop fighting,” he said, “And tell me which pack you belong to. Surely you’re not from the Darkstar pack.”
“The Darkstar?” She uttered, “I’ve never even heard of it.”
Jamie raised a brow, “You’re in their territory and have never heard of it? Do you take me for a fool?”
If Emma had felt even a modicum of fear back when she was with Alex, then it completely faded in comparison to what she was feeling now. Cornered in this deserted room, she saw no escape. She could very well scream and call for help, but that came with a risk of getting herself exposed. Jamie looked like no ordinary man, and the only way she could get away from him would be to be truthful.
“My story is quite complicated.” She said, swallowing a lump in her throat, “I don’t belong to any pack. I wasn’t even aware of my identity until three years ago.”
“You mean the fact that you’re a wolf?”
“Yes.” She nodded vehemently. “If you please let me go…”
“No.” His grip on her tightened. “You’re clearly not as harmless as you seem, Emma. For all I know, you could be a ploy Alex has been meaning to use to distract me.”
“Alex?” She scoffed, “I didn’t even know him until he came up to me. I swear I have nothing to do with him. You have to believe me.”
“Why should I?’
“Because if you’ll let me, I’ll tell you everything.” She begged, her voice cracking. “Please, Jamie, you’re hurting me.”
As though he was snapped back into reality, his grip instantly loosened. Clutching her wrists, she rubbed soothing circles on it, before looking up at him with glossy eyes.
“You need to come with me.” He said, “We’re not done yet.”
When he took her hand and pulled her along, she had little choice but to comply. Desperately hoping that her dick of a boss wouldn’t catch her running away with a client, she ducked her head and walked right behind his obscuring figure. Even after they’d stepped their feet into the cold air, Jamie didn’t slow his pace. When she saw him directing across the street, she could no longer remain silent.
“Where are we going?” She asked, to which he gave no reply. Coming to a halt, she forced him to turn around and face her. “I’m not going to let a stranger drag me away. If you won’t tell me where we’re going, I’m going to scream.”
“We’re going to my car.” He said, “Once we’re inside, you’re going to give me your address, and we’ll drive to your home.”
“My home?” She shrieked, “Why the hell would you want to go there?”
“Because I’d like to see what else you’re hiding.” He said, and resumed walking.
“That’s hardly fair. You can’t possibly expect me to declare my werewolf identity to a random flirt at a bar.”
Although she intended to provoke him and extract a response, she failed terribly at it. Soon enough, she found herself in front of a car with the passenger door open. Once she was ushered in, Jamie quickly got behind the wheel and gave her a stern look.
“Start talking, Emma.” He said before he hit the gas.
“Where do you want me to start?” Came Emma’s meek reply, her voice evident of exhaustion and reluctance. “You said you don’t belong to any pack.” Jamie said, looking at her from the corner of his eyes. “Why is that?”He watched as she fumbled with her fingers in her lap, surely nervous of the situation. However, when he heard her sigh, he knew he didn’t have to press on the matter further. “I am an adopted child. My parents are humans.” Jamie took a quick look at her, trying to analyze her face for any signs of lying. Unfortunately, she remained emotionless. “Your birth parents are werewolves then?” “Most likely. I’ve never seen them. Nor have my parents. The foster care took me in when they found me by the road, when I was less than a week old. A year later, my parents adopted me, and I’ve lived a normal human life with them.”“A normal life?” Jamie said, “I’m sure your parents have witnessed your wound healing ability when you’ve hurt yourself as a child. That is anything but nor
Tom choked in response, caught by surprise. Eyes wide with disbelief, he studied his friend for any sign of mirth in his features, but its absence only concerned him more. The man who had no space for anyone but himself in his life was blessed with a mate? “I can hardly believe it.” Tom said, “I thought you were destined to be alone forever.” Jamie threw him an unimpressive look, “I’m a werewolf, Tom. Of course I was destined to find my mate.” “But?” He said, “Why are you surprised then?” “It’s just…” Jamie looked away, “I hadn’t expected to find one anytime soon. At least not in the current circumstance.” “Well, cupid doesn’t knock on the door before he strikes his arrow.” Tom said, “Is she aware?”“That I’m her mate? I would guess not. She seems quite unaware of things.” “Such as?” “She was raised by human parents. I doubt she has much knowledge about our way of life.”“So you trust what she said?” “Of course.”Tom frowned at him, “Then why take the pain of coming all the wa
Cold water began to run down Jamie’s spine as he heard the ring of his cellphone. Turning the shower head off, he headed out to fetch the device by the basin. It was Tom. “Did you find anything?” Jamie spoke before he pressed the phone to his ear. “Nothing,” Tom replied, “Like you said, she’s clean.” A sense of contentment spread through him upon hearing his words. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was right like always or because he secretly hoped Emma was not a threat to them, but nonetheless, he was happy with what he was hearing. His way was clear, and he didn’t have to worry about her for a while. “Hello? Are you still there?”“Yes.” He said, “If you’re satisfied, we can move on to more important tasks.”“I’m bummed that I was wrong, but yeah, she is clean. Spending any more time on her would be a waste. I mean, all she does is go to the bar for work and meet up with a couple of friends. That’s as normal as it gets.” “Friends, you say?” Jamie asked, growing curious.“Yeah,
The inside of the bar seemed eerily familiar to Jamie. It could not have been longer than two years that he visited this place, yet, not a single thing was out of order. Frisky youngsters smoking pot in a corner, slinky women pursuing their clients and ignorant others swaying to the music. There was nothing he had not expected, including finding his dear friend standing in the midst of it all. Shaking his head, Jamie walked toward Thomas, or Tom, as everyone called him, ready to drag him away from the women that he surrounded himself with. Tonight was important, he couldn’t be wasting it over a hooker. “Ah, Chris!” Tom said as he spotted his friend approaching him. “You’re finally here, mate. Let me introduce you to- hey!” “It’s Jamie, now. Did you forget?” He said, glaring at his friend as he pulled him away from the brunette that was entertaining him all this time. “I told you I’m here for something important. What the hell were you doing with her?” “Oh, you know what I meant to
An irritated frown etched on Emma’s face as the door to the bar room opened. Out came a bunch of clients that looked to be in their late twenties, carrying with them the loud music of the room. One of them looked at Emma before they passed her by and gave her a small smile. Although she smiled back, her reluctance was never more apparent. It had been five hours since she began the shift, and if she survived one more hour she could happily get back home.Hotel Plaza was a respectable place where the rich frequented. However, the downside of it was that it also gave access to idiots who wouldn’t hesitate to convert the place into a frat house. The bar, which was usually meant to enjoy a drink or two, now turned into a blow out party place, seeing how it was men and women in their twenties and early thirties that frequented this place.
As soon as Emma recognised him, her first instinct was to close the door shut and flee the place. But Jamie was much too swift. Before she could as much as take a step back, Jamie appeared before her, yanking her into the room before closing the door behind her.“Where are you trying to escape?” He hissed before he took possession of her wrists and pinned them behind her. Pressing his body against her, he pushed backwards on the door, trapping her.“What the hell are you doing here?” She screamed, trying to fight off his hold on her.In any other circumstance, she would’ve easily gotten herself free. She was stronger than most men she encountered in her life, thanks to her supernatural abilities. But she stood no chance against
To say his mate was an infuriating woman would be an understatement.Nobody ever stuck up to him the way she did, even after realizing how dangerous he could be. She had to be daft to be picking a bone with him, for she had no reason to be that courageous. Or did she? When he first saw her, he assumed her to be like every other woman that fancied him. Shallow and timid. Jamie wished that she was a weak woman who could be easier for him to hate and eventually forget, but Emma was proving to be anything but that. She was a woman who knew how to stand up for herself in the face of adversity and be the perfect companion to a man like Jamie.Jamie clasped his eyes shut and groaned. Noticing his behavior, Tom threw him a careful glance. “What’s with you?&rd
When the last of the boxes were delivered safely into the living room, Emma finally took a breather. Propelling herself onto the cushion of her new flat, she closed her eyes for a few seconds, trying to regain the strength she’d lost in carrying up the giant boxes to the first floor. When Elena agreed to let her move in, she didn’t waste any more time lurking in her apartment. Although she had a few more days on her lease, she didn’t feel safe to live in a house that gave easy access to werewolves. Emma’s apartment would be no different, she knew, but she counted on the fact that her new company would ward off any evil plan Jamie might be plotting against her. After all, he wouldn’t risk exposing himself to another person. When Elena opened her eyes, she couldn’t help but groan at the h
Emma released a strangled cry as he neared her. Inching backwards, she tried to get up on her feet and get away from him, but she couldn’t. Before she could do so much as raise up on her feet, he kicked her down, stamping his foot on her chest. Crouching down, he held her hands and pinned them to the ground, rendering her immobile. She widened her eyes as he inched his face closer to her, feeling completely helpless within the confines of his body. “Let me go!” She screamed, eyes filled with fear. “Please!” “You deserve to die in my hands, just like that bastard that tried to take away my daughter.” He said, “These hands have killed so many of you, you think you will be spared my mercy? Never. I’d rather die than let you go.”Raising his knife, he angled it right above her abdomen. Emma’s eyes widened in surprise as she realized what he was doing. Her baby.. No! He couldn’t do that to her baby. “The venom in your body..” He said, “It’s supposed to kill your ability to shift into yo
Emma released a tearless sob as pushed the flush button on her commode. Leaning back onto her heels, Emma sat down on the bathroom floor as her head began to spin. It was the third time in a row today that she was retching in the bathroom, emptying all of her stomach’s content. She had no clue why she fell so sick suddenly that she couldn’t even keep a glass of water inside her. It was perhaps due to the stress that she’s been experiencing lately, which only aggravated as Jamie left her alone there. She felt her body burn as beads of sweat collected on her forehead. Wiping it off, she slowly reached for the wall for support and brought herself to stand on her feet. Although wobbly, she made her way to the basin and ran the tap, splashing some water on her tired face. As she looked into the mirror, she realized that she looked hideous. Dark circles covered the skin under her eyes as her face shrunk to reveal her bones. She looked visibly dehydrated, in desperate need of help and rest.
The emotion within Jamie swirled in all its fury, growing so magnanimous that he struggled to contain it within himself. He felt himself shake, growing suffocated with each passing second. He could no longer stay in the room. His feet took him away from his mother, going to the window. As he reached it, he swung them open and shoved his head out, reeling in a deep breath. He felt beads of sweat trickle down his forehead and along the tip of his cold nose. She felt a touch on his shoulder then, urging him to turn around but he resisted. “Jamie, please.” His mother sobbed, “Look at me.” “Get out of here.” He said in a low voice. “Jamie…” “I don't want to look at you.” He said, whirling around. “You and your husband, what a fucked up pair you are. One kills his own child and the other covers for him. That was bloody loyal of you, mother.” “What else was I supposed to do?” She cried, “If I had revealed the truth to you, he would’ve killed me too.” Jamie scoffed, looking away. There
Jamie could hardly get the scenes of that afternoon out of his mind. Any lingering hope he had regarding his father instantly diminished as he realized up to what extent he was willing to go to keep the aims of the brotherhood fulfilled. As he rolled on his bed, he realized that perhaps he made a mistake coming here, for he could now see the true nature of his father. At least if he was away, he could have found comfort in the misbelief that his father was a good man, a man who had the heart to at least spare some mercy on an unborn child. But now, he was facing the dark reality he would prefer to have avoided. He didn’t need to know that his father had zero regard for what Jamie wanted and cherished. His aim was more important to him than Jamie’s happiness, and if it meant killing his wife and child for it, then so be it. “You cannot let a rogue carry your child, Jamie. How could you have made that mistake?” His father had said that afternoon. “She is my wife.” He said. “That is
The tension in the air was palpable, making Jamie remain alert to every small movement. The familiar scent of wood and musk was hardly making him feel at home, rather, he felt out of place. Although it had been a mere few days since he was last at this place, it felt like an eternity ago, merely in the wake of everything that had happened in the past few days. Jamie shoved his hands into his pants pockets as he looked over the view from the window, watching over the people that roamed around in their backyard. Nothing was out of the ordinary, but it felt so different to his people once again. When he first arrived at his father’s house, he was greeted by the same people he once assumed to be his loyal friends. Just in a matter of a week, they revealed their true colors and proved to him that they would always remain loyal to the pack and its leadership. He knew he couldn’t blame them, for they were merely doing their job, but he couldn’t help the distaste he’s developed against them
Goodbyes were never easy. There was seldom anything good about your loved one leaving you. Whether it was to reach better places or to go back to fix things in the past, a departure always came with a possibility that the distance they’re going to create between them might be permanent. A harmless journey once took her entire family away from her, and she had no reason to believe that it might never happen again. As Emma watched him pull the zipper of his bag close, she realized that it was time. When he first broke the news that he would be going back home to settle things with his father, she was elated. It was precisely what she wanted him to do and she was glad he made up his mind without her having to reopen the conversation. However, as the night progressed, the reality of it sank in, a new fear creeped inside her. She struggled to accept that he was going to come back to her within a few days as promised, and instead, her mind tried its best to convince her that nothing in her
“How are things faring?” Jamie said as he overlooked the lush greens of the mountain top. He had just stepped out to have a word with Rafa while Emma got busy with preparing dinner for the two. After reaching their new house, the two of them were occupied with cleaning it and making it comfortable for use for a few days. Since it was rather cold than at home, Jamie had to step out into the forest to find some wood for the fire. After it was all set up, Jamie received a message from Rafa that things have calmed down and that he could reach him whenever he pleased. Jamie instantly stepped out as he was eager to know what happened. “It was alright.” Rafa replied, “The men have arrived a few minutes after you have left and were surprised that we have managed to get you out of here. We tried to sell them some bullshit, but they obviously didn’t fall for it. They could understand that we planned your escape, but that was about it. They couldn’t do anything more than that. However, I did s
As the night progressed, Emma lost track of time. Jamie refused to give in to her demands, yet kept her in a constant high throughout. Sparing no mercy for her desperation, he had his way with her, and by the end of it, they both collapsed on the bed. The last memory she had was of Jamie pulling her back against his chest, burying his face in her neck as he whispered to her, “I love you.”She fell into a peaceful slumber after that, chasing her dreams in the darkness. When she was next transported back into reality, she jolted awake to the someone banging on the door. She woke up with a gasp, looking at Jamie who had just risen up. Pushing the duvet off his body, he quickly donned his shorts and headed to the door. Light flooded into their room as he opened the door and the person on the other side started speaking. Emma remained submerged under the duvet and closely watched them, trying to listen to their words. However, she could barely make out anything and only deduced that ther
“Sleeping without me?” He asked as he pulled his shirt over his head, revealing his bare skin underneath. Emma watched as he proceeded to unhook his pants next, pulling them down his legs, “I thought you were avoiding me.” “I was.” He said as he climbed into the bed and then onto her. Careful not to crush her under his weight, he pulled her legs apart and wrapped it on either side of his hips. Leaning down, he stole a kiss from her lips. “I’m sorry,” She said, “It was not my intention to-” “I know what your intention was,” He said, cutting her off with his lips, “And I’m not angry with you.” “Then why didn’t you come up to meet me?” “I was busy with something else,” He said, “And I needed some time to contemplate what you said.” Emma looked up at him in puzzlement, awaiting him to elaborate. He rolled beside her and pulled him along so that she could be sprawled across his body. Resting her head atop of his shoulder, he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. “I realized that y
