Chapter 5: Never Break A Promise

                                                   * Lauren's POV*

I sat there on the dusty floor, filled with pride. My son is a bone, familiar, blood warlock, and an assassin. I am extremely proud, not so surprised though, I mean he is his father's son.

Thinking of Halin made my heart hurt. My mother had told me that Halin and I had a mate bond.

A mate bond is a very rare thing for witches. Your mate is the person you are destined to be with for the rest of your lives. They were made to be your perfect other half.

When you lose that person your heart and soul break, causing a pain worse than anything this world could throw.

When a mate died the one remaining would normally kill themselves shortly after. And if I'm being honest if I didn't have Tobias I was planning on killing myself.

These last few years without Halin have been absolute torture and the fact that Tobias looks exactly like him doesn't help. It's one of the reasons I have been so hard on him. Because every time I look at Tobias I see Halin and that makes the hole in my heart grow bigger.

Over the years I have learned to cope with my pain by immersing myself deeper into the dark arts. It has made me quite cold-hearted and cruel.

The coven clapped and cheered at Tobias. He stood on the podium, a smirk of pride edged in his lips.

I wish Halin was here, he would be so proud to see what his son would become.

I pressed my gold wedding ring between my bony fingers.

Since his death, I've kept it on a chain around my neck and I've never taken it off. As my fingertips rubbed against the cool metal a small smile played on my lips.

The memory of when Halin slipped it onto my finger played over and over in my mind. Halin had made the ring himself, he enjoyed working with blacksmiths, he even built his own forge at the back of our house. This enjoyment of working in a forge is another thing Tobias got from Halin.

"Alright, Cleo, Naomi, and Tobias go to the back rooms and get ready for the party. When you hear the crackers then you may come back." Said Lizzie.

We watched as they left the arena and went into the back rooms. Ounce they had left everyone began talking about Tobias.

" How is that possible?" They all asked.

They desperately tried to make up some theories, of course, none of their theories are correct. When they saw they were getting nowhere they began arguing with one another.

My sister Eva came up to me, her eyes are still wide with shock.

" Sister, how is it that your son has come to have such powers?" She asked.

" I don't know sister. I don't know." I sighed.

Except for the fact that I do know the answer and I promised not to tell anyone.

I desperately wanted to tell my sister the truth behind his powers, but I promised Halin I would never tell anyone. And I never break my promises, especially those I made Halin.

" What will happen to him now?" She asked biting on a loose strand of her hair.

" I don't know that either. Lizzie won't get rid of him that's for sure. He's way too powerful for her to let him go."

" True but I still wonder what she will do." She sighed.

" Well I wouldn’t know but you should, after all, sister you know her better than I." I hinted.

She nodded in response, she knew I was right.

When I was ten and she was six our parents got a divorce. My mother kept me and my father took Eva and brought her here.

My parents had alwaysed disagreed on most things.  My mother was a strict, traditional witch while my father on the other hand was more laid back and relaxed, always just wanted to party.

His teachings must be why my sister is how she is. Like my father, she lives a relaxed, carefree lifestyle.

My sister and I look somewhat familiar. We both have ebony black hair and pale skin. The similarities end there. Her hair has blue and green steaks died into it, she had ocean blue eyes, bright pink lips, and she is riddled with tattoos and piercings.

When she and my father left they moved out here and became part of the coven.

As my sister grew up she would normally hang out with Maxine and Lizzie. They became her best friends. But after their choosing ceremony when Maxine and Lizzie became blood witches and Eva being a bone witch they drifted apart. Although Maxine does still sometimes hangs out with her. Maxine was always more like Eva when it came to being party animals.

" Silence!" Lizzie yelled, the coven immediately quietened down. We looked up toward the throne to our leader.

One of the main reasons I think Lizzie became leader is because of her daunting appearance. She stood the same height as me - about five feet eight inches-. Her skin is snow white as well as her hair which nearly reached her ankles, she mainly kept it tied up. Her high cheekbones made her face look sunk in, making her black eyes stand out.

She looked completely different from Maxine. You would never think they are twins. Maxine is just short of five feet eight inches. Like my sister, she has black hair with a few red streaks in it. Her hair just touched her shoulders.  Her lips are a natural shade of red and her eyes are a crystal blue.

" Lauren, how is it possible that your son possesses such power?" Lizzie asked. The coven turned to me waiting for my answer.

" Like I told my sister, I have no idea. But I don't think it matters. His power can come at a real advantage for this coven, don't you all agree?"

Whispers of agreement arose.

" That is correct, he will be a great asset to this coven. With him, we will cement our position as the most powerful coven. Nobody will dare face us. This is not a time for questioning the source of Tobias's powers it is a time of celebration. Let's go and prepare the feast!"

The coven yelled in agreement and got to work, setting up the party.

" Come on sis, we have food to make and sexy clothes to put on." Eva giggled, tugging on my sleeve.

I looked over at Lizzie one last time, she was glaring back at me. I could tell she didn't accept my answer of ' I don't know'.  I know she will try to get an answer from me, but I will never tell her. Halin made me swear on my life and I will happily pay it to keep this secret.

" So what do you think?" Naomi asked.I gazed out at her masterpiece. After the engagement, Naomi insisted she had to be our wedding planner. Neither Ava nor I could disagree. It was very obvious that Naomi had a better flair for decorating and all that other important things than we did so we let her have free rein over this whole thing and I certainly don't regret it.The church looked unrecognizable. White and gold cloth hung over the ceiling and down the walls. A gold aisle ran along the floor up to the rose-covered altar. The back of every pew was also laced with the cloth and secured with blood-red roses." It is absolutely amazing," I smiled," Must have taken you hours."" Nope, it only took half an hour. Life works faster when you still have magic." She smirked.Ever since that night we defeated the witches Naomi has been droning me that now that I am human she is the greatest between the two of us. She said." I thought witches didn't pray to God." One of the men said. They all looked at her for her answer, for her explanation." We don't," She chuckled," We pray to many things. We pray to the Dark Lord when we want gifts. We pray to Lillith when we want protection. But in this case, when a witch's soul and in some cases their body leave this physical plane we pray to

All of them were nervous and scared, but they were also very determined to stop the coven. And so am I.I took a deep breath then ran across the meadow and into the temple. The walk to the arena was filled with fear.
