JAMES

Mr. Smythe, the bank manager, met us in his office hours before the bank officially opened.

“You have to understand, James, that this is an impossible amount. The bank does not have that kind of collateral lying about.”

“Of course, Mr. Smythe. I know how it works. But this is a matter of life and death!” For fuck’s sake! Why can’t he arrange the rest with the other banks? I held onto my sanity by a thread.

“Have you spoken to the police? Who is blackmailing you? We have a special unit…”

“Charles, please.” Father held up his hand. “We can’t get the police involved. My daughter-in-law has been taken. Whoever this person is will not hesitate to hurt her.”

“The FBI…”

“He will kill her!” I slammed my hand on his desk, leaning forward, getting into his personal space. He had to understand that this was serious.

Mr. Smythe leaned back in his chair to run a hand through his thinning hair. “But why in cash? It’s such a huge amount. Surely, they can’t expect…”

“Unless they know we won’t

DESTINYThe man was gone for what seemed an eternity, and I wished he would disappear from the face of the earth. Just leave me here, forget about me. Someone would eventually find me. But, of course, he came back.My bladder was fit to burst and upon seeing him, the need became more urgent. “I… I need the bathroom.”He rolled his eyes at me. But he bent down to cut my ankles loose. I considered kicking him in the face, but quickly changed my mind because he held the box cutter up to my face.“Don’t be a hero, Missus. I wouldn’t like to cut you.” He hauled me to my feet, shoving me toward the bathroom.“Are you going to let me go?” I hated the squeakiness in my voice. His response was curt. “Shut up and do your business. We have to move.”***Outside, the icy wind whipped against my body, and I shivered uncontrollably. More from fear than from cold. Smith opened the van’s back door and unceremoniously dumped me inside. I landed on my shoulder with a grunt. With a sudden sharp pain and

By whom? When I looked at Destiny, I could see her lips moving, but I couldn’t hear a fucking thing. I thought I was having a stroke.“But that’s impossible!” I heard her say when my brain finally caught up with the rest of my body.Fucking right!“Oh, I assure you, the test is accurate.” The doctor still smiled like he didn’t destroy my life with that one word. She cheated. She must have. Unless it is a fucking miracle, some immaculate conception. My balls clenched at the thought. Ronan fucking Walsh! He was about to die.“James?” Destiny reached for me, but I gave her a look that turned her to stone. Finally, the idiot doctor caught on. “Umm… I’ll give you two some privacy.” And he high-tailed it out of the room, closing the door behind him.I stared at the white paper on the bedside table. It lay there in all innocence, the clueless harbinger of

DESTINYThe nurse gave me a mild sedative, which didn’t really help, because I was too angry. Angry, confused, disappointed, heartbroken. I read the report thrice to let the reality sink in. Pregnant. The look on James’ face… He didn’t believe that he was the only man I slept with. I know we’ve only known each other for a couple of months, but really? Did he think that little of me to believe that I would cheat on him?I don’t know how it happened. But he should be happy, shouldn’t he? Only he wasn’t. He said he saw the photos. I could kick myself. It was stupid not to have told him about it. Now I’ve gone and made it worse. If James knew about it, he would flip his lid completely. But I don’t know if I want to go back home. I didn’t want to face an angry and accusatory James. JAMES“You’re right, Ronan! This is the same guy and with Jenna.” I would never forget that sonofabitch’s face. Just goes to show you, I’ve underestimated that snake of a woman again.Ronan whistled through his teeth. “This is an interesting turn of events. You should take this to the police. But why do you have it in the first place?”I told Ronan that I had her followed because I suspected her of trying to get Destiny out of the way. What I didn’t tell him was that I had him followed as well.“So, what are you going to do about this, Jimmy?” Ronan turned the photo over and over in his large hand. “She’s got some explaining to do.”“Indeed.” I wanted to confront her, throttle the truth out of her. Also, I wanted to rub this evidence in my father’s face before going to the police.“I know that look on your face, Jimmy. You’re about to do something stupid.” Ronan shook his head at me. “It’s not worth it, mate.”“I have to fetch Destiny from the hospital.” I took the photo from him and

DESTINY James and I drove alone in the Bentley while Mother followed us with her Datsun. She said she needed her own transport to go to work.“I refuse to sponge on you and your husband’s hospitality. You don’t owe me anything and I can look after myself, Destiny. I don’t need anybody’s charity.” She told me after James loaded her and Arthur’s stuff in her car.“I didn’t say you did. But think about Arthur. It’s the least you can do.”“You’re not making it easy for me to forget that I was a terrible mother, aren’t you?”“Please, Mother! Let’s not get into this.”“Yes, let’s not. We’re attracting attention.” James interrupted our argument. James was right. People were staring and pointing at us. Of course, James’ car was unusual for this neighborhood.“Fine, alright.” Aurora fastened Arthur in his car seat, and James held my door open for me.For five minutes, neither of us spoke. Then James was the first to break the silence.“So, your mother? You were so angry at me that you went

  • The Wild Billionaire's Destiny   Welcome Home

JAMES I had to walk away before I said something scathing. That woman! I would tolerate her only for Destiny’s sake. My sweet wife has such a forgiving nature, which I found endearing as it was something I am unfortunately lacking in.The manilla envelope in my bedside drawer burned me. I took it out to stare at the photo of Jenna with that bastard that took my wife. Of course, I should give it to your police, and I fully intended to. But before I do, I wanted to confront that bitch myself.Destiny mustn’t know about it. Not right away. She would give the game away. I want Jenna to hang herself with the rope I aim to give her.“James?” Destiny knocked at the bedroom door. I slammed the envelope back in the drawer. Why the hell did she knock? This was her bedroom too, for fuck’s sake. Although, I was relieved she did. I opened the door for her and took her into my embrace. She didn’t reject me, but she wasn’t welcoming either. “What is it?” I put her at arm’s length. Was she still a

There were scratches on James’ face and when I asked him about it, he changed the subject.“Did I do that?’ I turned his face to mine. Those blue eyes of his turned gray like the ocean on a cloudy day. “Forget about it, Sugar.” He took my hand and squeezed it lightly. “I’ve arranged for an alarm system to be installed. They’ll be here later on today.”“You’re not leaving me here alone, are you?” Not that I was alone, but I couldn’t face strange men being in the house anytime soon.“Sugar, you won’t be alone. I have a doctor’s appointment. But I’ll go after they’ve done, if that makes you feel better.”I nodded, feeling stupid and childish. My mother and Mrs. Donahue were there, after all. I wouldn’t be alone.“No, I’m just being silly. Go. I’ll be fine.”“I’ll be quick. I promise,” he said and pecked me on the cheek. Minutes later, I heard the Bentley drive off.***Mrs. Donahue and Mother were in t

JAMES The following day, Aurora went out again and left young Arthur in Destiny’s care. I wasn’t very happy about that. We didn’t sign up to be permanent babysitters to the kid, although he was cute enough. Aurora was secretive about her line of work, and, well, judging by how late she came in, I think I had a pretty good idea what she was up to.I stayed up late that evening. Destiny and Arthur had already gone to bed, and I opted to wait for Aurora. I wasn’t about to give her a key and the password for the alarm to come and go as she pleased. I didn’t trust her or know her well enough to do that. It was near midnight, and she still wasn’t back yet. Damn woman was going to get a piece of my mind.As soon as she walked through the front door, I called her into the lounge. “Mind if we had a word, Aurora?”“James! You startled me!” she faked a gasp.“A bit late, don’t you think? What type of boss keeps you working at this hour?” I hardly gave her a chance to kick off her ridiculous sti

Instead of having a relaxing time with only the two of us, our home had become a bustling hive of activity. The sound of laughter and chatter filled the air as Lorraine, Cassidy, and Jenny barged into the house, their arms laden with packages filled to the brim with baby goods. JAMESI woke up in a vast field of vibrant wildflowers, their delicate petals brushing against my skin as a gentle breeze whispered through the air. Initially, confusion washed over me, for I was certain I should have been somewhere else. Yet, lying there among the blossoms, gazing up at the expanse of the cerulean sky, a sense of pure bliss enveloped me. I wanted to stay there forever. It felt like heaven.Suddenly, a familiar voice called out my name, breaking the tranquility of the moment. "Mother?" I sprang up, searching the surroundings with bewilderment. It had to be a dream, it couldn't be real. But then, there she was, appearing exactly as I remembered her.Overwhelmed with joy, I tried to run towards her, but my movements felt as if I were tramping through heavy sand. The harder I tried, the more I struggled against an invisible force. "James," she called out, her voice filled with concern. "Stop. You must go back.""No, Mother, I don't want to go back. At Lord Barrington's insistence, I agreed to accompany him to a hotel just a block away from the hospital. As the owner, he had the manager prepare the grand presidential suite for our stay.Stepping into the suite, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the grandeur. They spared no expense, from the crystal chandelier in the center of the living room to the oriental rugs adorning the floor. Three luxurious bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom, left me in awe. Without Lord Barrington by my side, I would have felt utterly out of place in the opulent suite.Lord Barrington said kindly, “At least now you can take a warm shower and have a good night’s rest.”He left me in the bedroom I chose at random, thinking how strange it was spending the night with my father-in-law alone in a hotel. The gossip tabloids would definitely have a lot to speculate about if they got wind of it. I chuckled mirthlessly to myself. What a ridiculous thing to be worried about under the circumstances. • The Wild Billionaire's Destiny   The Long Wait

Was I dreaming? The world around me felt surreal, like a hazy fog had descended upon reality. The air was thick with a mix of anticipation and dread. Just a few hours ago, we were filled with joy, discussing baby names and envisioning the perfect nursery. The nightmare of Jenna's death seemed like it was finally coming to conclusion, and we could move on from all of it. Everything was supposed to be fine. But then, in a split second, it all came crashing down.Curious onlookers buzzed about, their whispers and murmurs blending in a cacophony of noise. Security officers stood tall, forming a barrier between the crowd and the chaotic scene unfolding before them. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably, blending with the sticky warmth that seeped through my trembling fingers as I clung desperately to James."James, don't leave me," I pleaded through sobs, my voice choked with anguish. I gently caressed his deathly pale face, hoping beyond hope that my touch could somehow anchor him to

  • The Wild Billionaire's Destiny   Drama at the Courthouse

DESTINYIt was late evening when we made our way back home. The violet sky overcast with gray clouds hanging low signaled the promise of snow. Winter has finally arrived.Lord Barrington seemed reluctant to let us leave, finding many excuses to keep us there. The aroma of a delicious lunch drifted through the air, enticing us to stay. As the hours passed, lunch turned into dinner, filling the grand dining room with the clinking of cutlery and the soft murmur of conversation. Afterwards, the staff brought us steaming cups of tea, accompanied by the sweet aroma of freshly baked biscuits. I couldn’t resist. It was as if Lord Barrington didn't want to be left alone in that massive, eerie mansion. And honestly, I couldn't blame him. The place felt haunted, even if I didn't believe in such things. At least there was some semblance of harmony between James and his father. They engaged in polite conversation, discussing minor matters instead of arguing. It was a significant improvement, and

  • The Wild Billionaire's Destiny   Temporary Peace

JAMESHaving heard nothing from my father, we drove to the hospital, anyway. Destiny insisted we stop at a fast-food restaurant on the way to get my dad something to eat. The aroma of sizzling burgers and salty fries wafted through the air, mingling with the scent of freshly brewed coffee.“I don’t care if it’s not healthy, James. He needs comfort food. Just this once.” She was determined to get him what she considered being comfort food. I just shook my head. I’ve never seen my dad eat a hamburger and fries. Ever. But there was no arguing with a pregnant woman. The lack of peanut butter or strawberry ice cream in the house had already agitated her. I had to promise her solemnly to get it for her.We found him in the waiting room where we left him. He looked as if he hadn’t slept at all, his tired eyes reflecting the fluorescent lights overhead. The uncomfortable chairs creaked as we sat down next to him. Outside the waiting area, the hospital staff carried on with their task. The low

He had regained his composure after his emotional outburst. I thought it was endearing to see him so vulnerable. He hardly ever showed that side of him.“I know, but I just couldn’t keep quiet any longer. Not after what he confessed to.” Lord Barrington rubbed his temples as if he had a headache.Looking closely at Lord Barrington, I noticed a red welt on one side of his face. “What happened to your face?” I blurted out.He subconsciously stroked over the red mark. “He struck me with his walking stick,” he said, grimacing. “Right before he fell.”Curiosity piqued, I asked, “What did you argue about?”He let out a deep sigh. “It doesn’t matter now.”“Really?” James raised an eyebrow at his father, his voice filled with skepticism. “Was it about the inheritance?”“Among other things.
