A foot collided with my jaw bone as Luciana spun on me. My block had fallen a little too short. Without magic, I wasn't as strong as my mother. Yet I knew every trick she could possibly pull. Beating her at her own game would prove challenging, but not impossible. She had trained me for this moment. Lead me to this very point in time for a reason. Sonja thought I could do it, thus I would prove her right.
Plunging head first into the fight, I decided to change my tactics. Luciana would never see it coming. A wild card was something my mother hated above all else. No one knew what that person would do. How they would attack and react. So let's play wild.
Stepping away from her, I shook my head. Pain throbbed but I suppressed it and put up my fists again. Our eyes met and all I saw there was pure intent. This was really for my own good. At least she didn't break me the way Adrian had broken her. My mom wanted nothing more than for me to excel at everything. To be the best version of myself that I could possibly be. If she had to do it this way, I understood.
Don't follow any patterns. Attack where there are openings and don't stop. I could feel the mantra vibrating within my skull. I had to be faster than her, and light on my feet. Catch her off guard. And. Strike! Leaping forward, I swung a wild right hook, which she dodged. My left hand snaked up and caught her in the stomach. Luciana quickly got back to her stance again, but I was there. I kicked her leg from beneath her and shoved the other to the ground. But I made a mistake.
Before I had time to correct my error, Luciana had swung out her leg and swept it beneath me, sending me sprawling into the dirt. A leg was cracked over my back as I dare stand. Pain laced up my spine and I gritted my teeth in response.
"Work harder Katharine!" Mother growled from above me. As I tried standing again, mother aimed another blow, but I rolled onto my back, missing her foot with an inch. Fast thinking and light foot work was all that could save me. Steadying my breath, I glanced at my mother again. She had barely broken a sweat.
"You can do it!" Reverie shouted from somewhere beside me. They all wanted me to pass. For me to finally start a new chapter in my life. I needed this. Needed to be free of all the fighting. What I needed most of all was the opportunity to finally go out and try to find my mate. He would compliment me in the best ways and it was time I needed someone to cheer me on, besides my parents and siblings.
Kicking up my legs, I jumped upright and hit mother with a roundhouse she didn't see coming. I missed her block and landed the side of her head, tilting it to the right where I promptly stepped in and cracked my elbow against her jaw. For a moment she sagged. Just one. Then she looked up and I could see those hybrid eyes. A terrifying blue with black around it and black veins slithering beneath her cheeks. I almost paled. It was her primal side taking over. Another lesson to be learnt. Never underestimate your opponent, no matter who it might be. Even your own mother.
With fangs extended, Luciana lunged forward. Her claws had extended and I could feel them raking across my belly. Fresh blood coated the air. She tried again, but this time I elbowed her away, side stepped and slammed a knee into her stomach. She hissed, but kept coming at me. We were caught in a dead lock. A flurry of blows. Kicks would land and punches would sting, but nothing brought her down. Not truly. The perfect war machine that I had created. By my hands she had become this and by hers she pushed me to be more.
Finally, she had me in a hold. Our heads were inches apart. And she did the unthinkable. Her head smashed into my own. Blinding white light flashed before me. I could hear the Valkyrie gasp. Mother had never done this before. Who was the wild card now?
"You bitch!" I snarled and heard my mother cry out in pain as something snapped. "How fucking dare you!" My brain was my biggest weapon. Her hurting me there was unimaginable. Unthinkable. Who the fuck does she think she is?
Fury bubbled inside me. Darkness crept to my finger tips. Suddenly I was alone with this growing entity. This thing taking form before me. A creature so vile I could hardly fathom it. With an ox skull for a head and charred branches for wings. When it spoke every hair on my body stood upright. This was the face of true death, not the Killer Queen.
"Kill her." The command was so simple. Yet there was no denying him. This beast. This brooding being that had a hold over me when I lost my grip. So I did as I was told.
Snapping back to my reality, Luciana was clutching her broken leg with worry in her eyes. But I didn't care. She needed to die. Lifting my hands above my head, Luciana started rising. With the snap of my fingers, her arm broke. Another snap, her other leg spurted blood.
"Katharine!" I heard father scream in the distance. Then I heard the Valkyrie unsheathe their weapons. Before they could attack, I felt a syringe plunge into my arm. Daddy was here. The monster will be gone now.
"I told you she wasn't ready!" He yelled as mother fell to the floor. The Valkyrie said nothing. How could they? They were here to judge the fight and see to it that neither one of us killed the other. Simple.
Yet everything felt as if it was happening so far away. Almost in a dream that I could barely fathom. The medicine in the syringe was taking away my consciousness. Draining me of my will to kill. Even stay awake. Tranquilizers. That's what he doped me up with. The same ones he had used so many times before. Mother had thought this time was different, that Miranda had finally taught me something of value, but I had lost my grip the moment she did something I never thought she would do. I had erupted the moment that thing had told me to end my own mother.
"You should have known better than to have pushed her so hard!" Julian roared and I fell limply into his arms.
"It is for her own good!" Luciana argued back. Julian picked me up bridal style as my body grew heavier and heavier.
"You sound just like your father." The disappointment in his voice was horrible. Even in this state I knew how hurt she must be by his words.
Julian spun on his heels and started walking to the house. And I could vaguely make out the creature made of nightmares standing just in the tree-line, watching over me.

Luciana's Point of View
Julian was hot on my heels as we stomped through the palace walls. He had taken Katharine to Miranda, to help tame her episodes, as well as ensuring that she was fine. The Valkyrie had brought me in after he had stormed off. My arm was broken, along with a leg, but it barely took a few minutes inside the house to heal. New scars peppered the healing wounds and a stiff ache throbbed down the limbs.
Sonja had only apologized for not intervening, but I understood why none of them hadn't. They were afraid I might hurt them if they hurt my daughter.
"Maybe Julian is right, Lucy. Maybe she isn't ready yet," Sophie had told me, but I had refused to believe it. That was an hour ago.
Episodes like the one outside drained our daughter to no end. I knew I had pushed her too far. That I was probably the sole reason for her needing to be put to sleep. But I needed her to be ready. To take her place amongst us once and for all. If she is to pass my test then she will begin her training as Queen. So many things rested on her beating me in a fight. It would show us just how much discipline she had. From the looks of it, she had none.
"You had taken it too far this time, Luciana!" Julian roared from behind me as I rounded another corner. His anger vibrated through the halls.
"I was trying to do what is best not only for her but for this family as well. She needs to be strong." The explanation sounded weak to my ears as well. Maybe I had turned into my father after all.
"You know better than most that that statement is bullshit. Press her any harder and we might have a mass murderer on our hands. You know this!" Julian screamed again and banged our study door closed behind him.
"Her powers are controlled. Tamed. Miranda makes sure of that. What more could we possibly do?" I asked, my eyes flashing blue as I rounded on him.
Julian stepped closer to me. His eyes were soft. Inviting. He knew what I was saying.
"Maybe it would be best if Elijah takes the throne. Katharine is the rightful heir but she is unstable. Uncertain. Our people cannot live under the rule of a mad woman."
Fury settled at the bottom of my stomach. Hot and chewing at every cell in my body. He dare ask this of me. Usurp my daughter before she even ascends?
"You are mad if you think that will happen. She will be the greatest ruler of her time. The prophecy stated clearly that my line will continue on in this world and I will be damned if my only biological child doesn't come after me," I spat and shoved past him.
Throwing the door closed behind me again I walked towards Katharine's room, silently praying that she doesn't know the atrocities her father speaks of at night.
Miranda stepped back and watched me closely, her eyes taking in every detail. The old hag looked to be in her late thirties, with dirty blonde hair and a few mean grey hairs. Yet I knew better. She was well over 400 years old. Sanity still in check. Late afternoon sun washed in from my open curtains, warming my back as Miranda prodded and poked my sides. She was looking for something she wouldn't find. There was never a physical sign that I was going over the edge. Everything was in my mind and it fucking sucked.Although Miranda's magic was more nature based than my own, I had no other choice but to accept her tutelage. The elements and plants were her domain, even brewing shoddy potions with whatever herbs were on hand. But all the knowledge she had gathered over the last four-hundred year could be applied to all types of magic. Mine included. My powers surpassed hers by far, yet my pa
Luciana's Point of ViewShame settled into my bones, like lead that weighed me down until I could barely follow Mikaela out into the hallway. They were right. All of them. I had pushed Katharine too far and I knew it. She might have been my daughter and I wanted nothing but the best for her but pushing her until her breaking point had been a stupid mistake. One I would never make again. I wanted nothing but the best for my daughter. The best and brightest future possible, but Julian had been right in being so angry. Maybe I had acted like Adrian today.Mikaela’s footsteps echoed down the hall as I tried to catch up to her. Her sniffling bounced off my eardrums and I couldn’t help but feel worse. I had caused all of them such unrelenting pain over the last few years. From being kidnapped, to never being home afterwards. I bit the inside of my cheek and sped up my pace. Mikaela had taken a left turn, into a lounge area we barely used. Her sni
Gladice woke me up at exactly five. Her grey hair was pulled back into a bun, her eyes stern as she took in my mess for hair. The dinner my parents had arranged would start in an hour, just enough time to make myself presentable. With another look my way, Gladice sauntered into my walk-in closet and quickly came back out with a modest, but beautiful, olive green cocktail dress. The dinner was supposed to be the demarcation of the start of my coming out ceremony. After today, I knew dad would want to postpone the coming out ball, but mom would press for it now more than ever. I was ready to face the world, not as a warrior but as a princess. I had lived in the shadows far too long and claiming my title after years of learning how to handle myself, it almost felt like my prize.Shuffling to the end of my bed, I let my feet dangle over the edge. My hair fell around my face, tangles clear as crystal. Gladice arranged my jewelry and diadem on the dressing table, a brush and
Luciana's Point of ViewThe dinner had been tense, but we managed to lighten the mood somewhere along the lines. Khauhelo's little confession was a wonder to hear. Good news came in short these days, but triplets were a present from the goddess herself. Yes, she will have her hands full most of the time but she had Karabo by her side. Along with all of her siblings and her mother.Julian had panicked when Amelia had brought up postponing the ball. He hadn't wanted to tell Katharine about it. Didn't want to admit to his own guilt. I felt a fraction of satisfaction at his unease. Serves him right. Royals were all blood thirsty sharks and delaying Katharine's coming out ball would only add buckets of blood to the water. It showed a certain amount of weakness within our house, which we couldn't tolerate. After the whole Amelia debacle with Arjun, Arjun had wanted nothing more than to rip me from my throne. Any sign of disruption and he would pounce.
Katharine's Point of ViewSomehow the dinner had come and gone without a hiccup. Or someone decapitated and on the floor. Even my parents had behaved themselves, although I had heard them fighting in the hall later on. Julian had apologized, or that was what I had gathered, seeing as mother and Caspian had gone back to their shared room with father. Trouble in paradise, if only I was a fly on that wall.Gladice had woken me up, as usual, with my breakfast. Bacon, eggs and toast. The aroma wafted into my nose and I dug in. The old woman sauntered into my closet, picking a rather beautiful pale yellow sundress for me. I lifted my eyebrow, but she simply set it on the end of the bed."Your mother said that you have to dress nicely. You are meeting with the designers of your dress today and first impressions matter." Gladice explained and shuffled to my dresser, placing silver shoes beside it."If I had known there was so much more to plannin
Katharine's Point of ViewMother had told me that I was to stay home for the next few days, or until my ball. The walls had grown suffocating, the music bland. I wanted out. A dress had been picked and would arrive shortly. All the finer details for the ball was planned out and I needed a breather from it all. From being Royal.Sneaking out of the palace wasn't the hard part. The hard part came when Reverie insisted that she came with. Along with Claire and Emory. Apparently they didn't like being cooped up the way they were. Sonja had retired to her room, leaving us to scheme. Emory was in her dark pit again, as her mate had left her only two weeks prior due to Emory constantly needing to be away. And Claire... Well she was just Claire. Amethyst had opted out, rather staying in with Willa and watching a movie. Neither had found their mates yet, but they wouldn't find them in their bedrooms either.Yes Reverie was expecting and Sebastian won't b
"Emerson, who is this?" A shrill voice rose from beside me. I could only assume it was the red head. Looking lazily over my shoulder, I noted her displeasure. My smile was coy when our eyes locked."Wasn't your name Levi?" I purred and threw my hair over my shoulder, dismissing the woman beside the booth. Levi noticed the devils within my smile and quickly looked towards the girl. His smile was much more pleasant than what I had expected, almost as if he truly did love the woman."This is Katharine. Someone like me. A new friend if you will." He explained, ignoring my little jab immediately. My smile grew considerably. She shook her head in disbelief, eyes growing into slits. "I'm not gone for five minutes and you are already hitting on someone else. Typical," she huffed and crossed her arms. So, he has always been a busy little bee. Interesting."On the contrary. He simply extended a friendly hand as I am new in town and new to my... Genetics." I offered
The day had finally arrived. My coming out ball was tonight and the nerves within my body stood on end. There was no escaping the spotlight now. Nowhere to run or hide. From tonight on, my face will be splashed all over the tabloids. I could already see the titles. 'Long lost princess, finally home.' It made my stomach roll even more. No more sneaking out and expecting no one to know who I was. No more causing trouble beneath white strobe lights. Drowning. This was what drowning felt like, I was sure of it.Luciana walked in front of me, her hair swaying in the light breeze, Mikaela tense beside her. An event planner, I had no idea the name of, walked on Luciana's other side. They were finalizing the decor for tonight, along with where everyone would sit. Royals had started coming in late last night, some of whom I had never even met before. Luciana's Point of View"Find me Levi. I need to speak with him. Now!" I commanded and accepted the blanket Gladice held out for me. Draping the fabric over my shoulders, I stormed towards the main office. Four desks sat in the large room, with tomes of books lining the walls. Paper's were stacked on three tables. Mikaela's, Caspian's and Julian's. I kept a cabinet behind me, often working late through the nights to clear my desk of any lingering work."He left after he put Katharine to bed. No one knows where he is." Amethyst explained and I whirled on her, eyes flashing wildly. Amethyst kept her ground, simply giving me an unamused look."I don't give a shit where he is or isn't. You are my Valkyrie, the best warriors and trackers the world has ever seen. Find him. It is high time that I have a little chat with him." I hissed and fell into my chair behind my desk.Ripping a paper from a pad, I wrote down the feelings I had arou
Luciana's Point of ViewWashing away the remnants of what had taken place, I savored the cascading water down my body. Every drop brought me closer to feeling like myself. Caspian and Julian had hit up the spare bathroom. I needed to be alone for a moment. To just take my time in processing what was happening with Katharine.Levi seemed to be more of a hinderance to Katharine than an asset. He would reject my daughter, then expect her to follow him. Arrogance would be his greatest downfall. Nonetheless, Julian wouldn't budge on having Levi removed. He was right, no one else matched Katharine in power or stamina. That still didn't mean that he was the right choice for our daughter. She needed someone who believed in her and clearly he didn't.Closing the taps of the shower, I stepped out and folded myself in a white towel. Steam curled all around me as I walked towards the mirror. Wiping the condensation from the shiny surface, I faced m
Luciana's Point of ViewHis head was buried between my thighs and it was like feeling heaven. With each stroke of his tongue I went closer and closer to the edge, almost seeing the end. Julian nipped at my clit, then pulled away, kissing my inner thigh. I shivered in response, leaning back fully, only my arms keeping me fully standing. Licking down from my cunt to my knee, Julian gripped my leg and heaved it over his shoulder, opening me up further for him. I gasped at the sudden move but it soon turned into a moan as he pushed his tongue against me again.Wrapping my hands in his hair, I pushed him closer, grinding against him for more. His own lust bulged against his pants and I just wanted to taste him. Jerking up his head, I stared into his eyes, smirk dividing my face. Lust clawed at the edges of his vision, fangs already out to play. Shoving myself from the table, I pushed him flat to the floor. His pants barely gave any resistance when I tugged
Luciana's Point of ViewHe couldn't handle her. Had simply stood there and watched as the world around her had crumbled. Was he the perfect fit? Our decision to make Katharine join another house sounded absurd after seeing what had happened. Levi had panicked and if he hadn't gotten out of it, he would have been badly injured. Levi Emmerson. He was a mighty wizard, close to even Katharine, but was he the correct one to guide her forward?Mikaela had walked in at the right time as well. She saw the incompetence dancing in his eyes. Smelt the fear hanging over him. None of us could have touched her. Could have stopped her. But he had gained access to her skin. Soothed her until all her magic had vanished into thin air.Once upon a time, I would have believed it to be a fluke, but I knew better. Miranda had trained Katharine for years now and she had never reacted so poorly to the training. There was something else afoot. Mikaela knew it as well. C
The blow landed firmly on his jaw, sending him stumbling back. Another lurched forward with a spear. I deflected it effortlessly and broke it in half, taking the tip as a long knife. One guard hesitantly moved forward and I smiled sickly at him. Blood lust was clear as day within my eyes. The guard balked again and I couldn't help but let my ego grow an inch. He stepped left but mocked right, his kick making contact with my side. I grunted, absorbing the shock and grabbed his leg. The panic within his face made my blood run hot with excitement. Flipping him over, I socked him square on the nose as he landed. Three more remained, but they looked at each other and threw down their weapons. I smiled sweetly at the middle one, almost making him pass out. They knew of my training. Knew that Luciana hadn't spared a single punch at my expense. "That is not fair to them and you know it," Sophie cooed as she walked closer to my little sparring ring. The bright sun ill
When I was young, my mother would tell me stories of how I would find the right person. The way they would fit you perfectly. Someone to compliment you. After all, you are already whole, now you are just a matching set. They would come in and sweep you off of your feet. Change the way you saw the world. But all I saw now was red. Blinding red. This was too much to take in. I wasn't ready to find him yet. I had barely tasted the world. Barely had a chance to explore all it had to offer. Besides, he had Emma."This can't be happening," I muttered and ripped my arm from his grasp. Levi couldn't meet my eyes. I didn't want him to. I was too scared that I would fall into them and never get out. Wasn't that how this went? You found your mate and suddenly you couldn't think for yourself anymore."Katharine, I-""You don't have to say it, I don't want you to say it. I already know what you are thinking," I whispered and turned to leave again."We ca
Gladice had me scrubbed down and smothered in scented oils. Copious amounts of hairspray was added to my curls. Swatches of makeup was chosen and finally, I was ready to meet my future. I had waited my entire life for this moment, for this beautiful crest to finally break. Tonight was my time to shine. The winding stairs came into a short view. The rest of my family had already joined the masses. Everyone waited on me. Every eye would soon devour me whole.Mikaela had instructed me to head down an hour after them. It was a declaration after all. Introducing me to the world.I heard the mic go on as someone unknown to me took center stage. The voice was gruff. Hollow. But I knew he was the master of ceremonies. My parents would never take that role. They were too high up in the world. They weren't here for anyone's entertainment, much less for the entertainment of melodramatic ass kissers such as our nobility."Ladies and gentlemen. If you would please foc
