“They’re close,” Lucas whispered beside me, his voice tense with strain.

I nodded, my eyes scouring the darkness. Thalion had stationed troops throughout the perimeter, their sharp eyes shining faintly in the moonlight. My fingers flexed, and I could feel the strange energy pouring through me, a force that was both foreign and familiar.

"Are you prepared for this?" Lucas touched my hand and asked.

I looked up into his concerned eyes. "No," I said, "but that's irrelevant. We must battle them because they are here."

A howl pierced the night before he could reply, sending a shiver down my spine. It was followed by another, and another, until the sound of wolves howling together filled the air.

With a grim expression, Thalion walked forward and remarked, "They're signaling their attack. Go to your places, everyone!"

The camp came alive with activity. Warriors sprang into defensive positions around the central area, moving quickly. Thalion led Lucas and me to the front line, where the woods gave way to a wide field of moonlit grass.

Lucas pointed to the ridge and said, "There."

I felt my stomach sink as I followed his gaze. Gleaming eyes pierced the darkness as shadowy creatures emerged from the treeline. Oliver's soldiers advanced in unison, their positioning accurate and intimidating.

"Remain on the line!" With his voice echoing the mounting tension, Thalion let out a growl.

Suddenly, a swirl of fur and claws charged toward us, the first wave of attackers. The crash of bodies and snarls reverberated around the area as the old pack confronted them.

For a moment, I stood motionless, observing the mayhem. Wolves battled valiantly, their movements a blur of aggression and despair.

"Anna, get moving!" A rogue lunged at me, but Lucas yelled and pulled me back.

It was instinct. A flash of energy erupted from my uplifted fists, striking the rogue and sending it flying backward. Before it could recover, it struck the ground hard and lost consciousness.

Lucas replied, "Good shot," in a tone that was equal parts proud and relieved.

However, there was no time to rejoice. We were attacked by another rogue, and I was prepared this time. I willingly allowed the energy within me to take shape by focusing on it. From my palm, a tendril of light sprang forth, encircling the rogue and tossing it aside like a rag doll.

"Go on!" From somewhere close, Thalion yelled. "Don't stop!"

He was engaged in combat with two of Oliver's warriors when I turned around, and his motions were accurate and fluid. I could see the strain on his face, but he was keeping up.

Standing by my side, Lucas resolutely fought off a rogue. I saw him kick the rogue's side with great force after ducking beneath a swoop of claws.

He shouted, "Anna, pay attention!" and jolted me out of my reverie.

I returned my focus to the fight, directing my energies to launch another assault. Now, the strength came more easily, coursing through me as if it had always been there. I defeated rogue after rogue, my confidence growing with each victory.

However, the conflict was far from over.

I turned to see a huge wolf emerge from the treeline as a thunderous roar broke through the commotion. Oliver was the one. His eyes blazed with a fearsome ferocity, and his black fur shone in the moonlight.

Lucas murmured, "Anna," in a quiet, desperate voice.

With my heart racing, I answered, "I see him."

Unlike the others, Oliver did not charge. He walked slowly and methodically while keeping his eyes on me. Everyone turned to look, and the violence around us seemed to pause.

Oliver growled, his voice low, "So, this is where you've been hiding. I must say, I'm amazed. I didn't believe you were capable of fighting."

The electricity in me surged at his proximity, and I tightened my fists. *Oliver*, I'm not the same girl you left behind. I'm not afraid of you anymore.

He let out a deep, ominous laugh. "Brave words. Let's see if your actions match them."

He surged at me before I could respond, his enormous body quickly reducing the space between us. I lifted my hands and conjured a luminous shield that deflected his blow. I staggered backward at the force of the impact, but I managed to maintain my position.

In an instant, Lucas stood beside me, his teeth bared as he turned to face Oliver. "You must first pass through me."

Oliver scoffed. "With pleasure."

Lucas ducked just in time as Oliver swung a huge paw at him. Their movements were a blur of power and speed as they clashed. I was horrified to see Lucas struggle to keep up with the alpha's physical prowess.

"Lucas!" I yelled, but I felt paralyzed. Oliver's power was oppressive, and his presence overwhelming.

“Stay back, Anna!” Lucas shouted in a strained tone.

But I couldn’t just stand by and watch. I closed my eyes and concentrated on my inner energy. Now, it was more powerful than ever. I sensed it growing, threatening to spill over.

When I opened my eyes, the environment appeared clearer and more vibrant. Lifting my hands, a beam of light erupted, hitting Oliver in the chest. With a howl of agony, he staggered back as the light surrounded him.

Lucas seized the opportunity to strike, delivering a powerful blow that knocked Oliver to the ground.

However, it was not enough. Oliver sprang up, fury blazing in his eyes. "You'll pay for that," he growled.

With renewed vigor, the battle resumed around us, the sounds of combat merging into a frantic symphony. I knew this couldn't continue indefinitely.

"Lucas," I said, my voice wavering. "This has to stop."

With a stern grimace, he nodded. "Together."

We stood side by side, facing the alpha who had followed us everywhere. I realized this was our only chance, and my energy was burning brighter than ever.

I grabbed Lucas's hand as Oliver charged at us once again. The night was illuminated by our collective surge of power, a dazzling burst of energy and light that shook the earth beneath us.

Oliver vanished as the light dimmed, leaving us to wonder where he had gone.

Relief came over me, but it was short-lived as I took in the exhaustion etched into his face.“What now?” I whispered, my throat tight.“We find Thalion,” he said firmly, though his eyes betrayed his doubt. We proceeded together through the devastation, stepping over fallen bodies and shattered weapons. The pack that had offered us sanctuary, strength, and answers was now in ruins.“There!” Lucas pointed ahead.I followed his gaze and saw Thalion slumped against a jagged boulder, his breathing heavy. After hours of wandering around, we came across a cabin. With his hand hovering over the corroded handle, Lucas stopped at the door."It doesn't appear to be much," he remarked, turning to face me. "But compared to sleeping outside, it's better."I nodded, too tired to protest. Running had left my legs hurting, and the turmoil of the previous day had left my brain aching. If only for a few hours, I just wanted to pass out somewhere safe.We entered the room when Lucas creaked the door open. It was remarkably undamaged, but the air was musty and stagnant. There was a shabby couch in the middle of the room, its cushions sagging but still functional, and a little fireplace against one wall.As we shut the door behind us, Lucas muttered, "This will do." He went quickly to inspect the windows to make sure we weren't being followed. His movements were quick and precise. With everything finally weighing on me, I collapsed onto the couch. I snapped awake as the previous night's events suddenly came back to me. The recollection of the growls in the forest and the rush of adrenaline I had when Lucas and I stood together, prepared to face any challenge, made my heart hurt. The stress had been enough to keep us up most of the night, even if the attack never materialized. Lucas was sitting by the now-extinct fire with his back to the wall and his eyes closed when I turned to look at him. His brows were furrowed even while he slept, as if he was still struggling to release the weight that was on us.I pulled the tattered blanket across my shoulders and sat up quietly. Nightshade—Oliver, Maia, and all I had left behind—was on my mind.I was no longer able to run.The choice became like a big stone lodged in my chest. Retaliation was no longer the only factor. It was about liberation and confronting the monster that had ruled every aspect of my existence.I stood, and Lucas open

We need our strength if we encounter difficulties because we have been walking for hours."Despite my body's protests against stopping, I nodded. I knew he was correct, but the need to get to Nightshade blazed like a flame inside me. We could not risk being unprepared and stumbling into Oliver's turf.Lucas froze when we came to a little clearing, his hand out to stop me."Heard it?" His presence served as a continual source of solace and a reminder that I wasn't fighting this battle alone.Lucas broke the silence by saying, "We'll stick to the northern trails. It's unlikely that they have scouts stationed there."I adjusted the strap of the bag that was slung over my shoulder and nodded. It was little, containing just the necessities that we had gathered. “Do you think the rogues will come through for us?”Lucas paused, staring straight ahead. "They may. But we cannot completely depend on them. If they fail to appear, we will have to proceed without them."It was intimidating to think of taking on Oliver without any help, but I forced myself to ignore the thought. With my luggage draped over my shoulder and a weary but determined heart, I stood at the edge of the woodland. Beside me were Lucas and Maia, whose faces reflected mine: a mixture of resolve and melancholy.Cain came toward us, his eyes full of resolution but his face etched with fatigue. Although he had been among Oliver's most devoted soldiers, the insurrection had altered him. We were leaving him in control after he had fought with us and put his life in danger for the pack."Are you sure about this?" he said softly.I gave a nod. "Cain, you're the greatest option. You are trusted by the pack. They will follow you."He paused, his eyes darting between Maia and Lucas. "How about the three of you? Where are you going?""Somewhere new," was all I said. "A place where we can start again."Cain's face softened as he nodded. "You've done enough for this pack. More than sufficient. Go if this is what you need. We'll be alright."I said my

I had nothing left to offer the pack, but they continued to hover, perhaps awaiting guidance. There was still a weight in my chest. I didn't feel like I had won, even though Oliver was defeated and his rule was overthrown by the people he used to rule.Sitting next to me on a splintered wooden bench, Maia was looking off into space as she absently traced a scar over her arm. Ever the guardian, Lucas stood a few feet away, his gaze sweeping the still audience. After a long pause, Lucas whispered, "They need a leader." He spoke in a quiet, wary tone. "Someone to rebuild what's left."Slowly, I nodded. "They need someone," I said, then looked over at Maia. She stiffened as I stared at her. "Don't even think about it."I cocked my head. The trumpet's call echoed through the broken remains of Nightshade, a sound that once sent fear rippling through the pack but now carried a different weight. A summons. A reckoning.I stood in the heart of the pack's gathering grounds, where months ago, I had watched Leo be condemned to death. My fingers tightened into fists at my sides as I forced myself to take in every detail... the stone platform, the lofty arches, the wooden beams above that had once felt oppressive. The torches flickered, casting long shadows against the walls, just like they had that night.Only this time, it wasn't Leo standing before the pack.It was Oliver. He was on his knees in the center of the hall, bound, his body battered and broken. Blood matted his dark hair, his once-imposing body slumped forward in exhaustion. The very warriors who had formerly battled under him stood around the perimeter of the hall, their gazes flitting between me and the fall

There was silence on the battlefield. The silence was not one that resulted from relief or tranquility. It was the thick, stifling type that comes after a storm, as though the world itself was holding its breath. The ground was covered in fallen people, and the air was heavy with the smell of smoke and blood. With a mixture of amazement and incredulity, the rebels who had survived the slaughter and were still standing glanced at Anna.Oliver was lying at her feet, immobile and broken. His burnt body stood out sharply against the blood-soaked ground below, and his once-imposing figure had now collapsed into a crumpled heap. He was not yet dead, but he was very nearly so. His chest rose and fell in weak, irregular spasms, and his breaths were shallow. With her shoulders heaving and her hands still burning dimly from the last of her power, Anna stood over him. Her hair was knotted and wild, and her face was stained with blood and filth, but her ey

All I could do was observe. My entire existence begged me to step in, step in, and support Anna as she faced Oliver alone. However, I was unable to.I shouldn't.This was her fight.Standing opposite Oliver, Anna's body was bruised and covered in blood, yet her unwavering will remained burning. I had never seen the raw electricity crackle in the air around her before. It was hazardous, untamed, and wild. There was nothing weak about the dim glow that flickered from her palms, like a fading ember. The ground beneath her boots seemed to be reacting to her, quivering in expectation of what lay ahead.Oliver rolled his shoulders and grinned as though this were merely a minor annoyance. I shuddered at his self-assurance. For so long, he had ruled by terror, destroying anybody who tried to oppose him. He now considered Anna to be simply another idiot who believed they could prevail. However, she wasn't.

My muscles ached from the never ending battle, and I was breathing in ragged breaths, but there was no time to pause. As I surged at her, avoiding an enemy's claws at the last second, my stomach knotted in terror."Maia!" I fell on my knees next to her. Her breathing was shallow, and blood was leaking from a deep wound along her shoulder. Her body trembled uncontrollably as she attempted to push herself up. The rebels' bodies were tense with expectation as they stood at the forest's edge, concealed by the thick undergrowth. The clearing where Oliver's fortress stood in the distance was stricken with weird shadows as moonlight seeped through the treetops. To steady myself, I shifted my weight and clenched my fingers into fists.
