"That symbol..." I couldn’t take my eyes off the strange marking. It was jagged and rough, as though it had been carved quickly yet had been placed in this location for a reason. "Why is it here, Leo? What does it signify?"

Leo looked away, his eyes haunted, and he rubbed the back of his neck while taking a trembling breath. "When I first saw this symbol, Anna... It was on the floor, just where I discovered you."

His words knocked the air out of my lungs like a physical blow. "What?" My voice was almost heard as I whispered.

Leo went on, sounding distant as though he were reliving the event. "It was a night like any other," he said. "I found you laying in a little clearing at the boundary of the area when you were a baby. And that precise marking was there, etched into the ground surrounding you."

As I glanced at him, I found it difficult to understand his words. "So, when you found me, this mark was with me? And it's here now?"

His forehead furrowed as he nodded. "Yes. There's more. That symbol is something I've seen in the pack house once. In Alpha Oliver’s private chambers."

My heartbeat accelerated. "Oliver’s room? But… why would he have it?"

"I don’t know, Anna," Leo said in a shaky voice. "But it means something. You have a relationship with that symbol. And it can't be good if Oliver knows anything about it."

Even though I made an effort to comprehend everything, it was like assembling a puzzle with half of the pieces missing. "So you think Oliver knows something about… about where I come from?"

"Or he’s keeping it from you." Leo's expression clouded. "It is risky, whatever it is. Anna, you must exercise caution around him. More than before."

A loud, piercing horn sound broke the stillness between us as it reverberated through the night. Recognizing the call that required the presence of every pack member, we both recoiled.

"That’s Alpha Oliver calling a meeting," Leo said in a grim voice. "And knowing him, he doesn’t call these for nothing."

A shiver ran down my back. "You don’t think… this has anything to do with me, do you?"

Leo let out a sigh and looked at me with concern. "I would not rule anything out for Oliver, but I'm not sure. Anna, keep your head down. If at all possible, just blend in."

By the time we got there, the pack house was already starting to fill up, with all of the members congregating in the spacious meeting room. As we made our way through the crowd, I stayed by Leo's side, sensing that many were watching us. As usual, most people disregarded me, dismissing me as the invisible omega, while some sneered and others scowled.

Oliver stood in the center of the room, surveying the audience with his sharp eyes. It was difficult to ignore his commanding presence; he demanded loyalty and acquiescence at every turn. Tonight, though, I felt a shudder go through me because of something deeper in his eyes.

Oliver's eyes flicked to me as I shifted to the side of the room to wait with the other omegas who would be bringing refreshments. Every nerve in my body begged me to go, but I forced myself not to shiver as his eyes lingered, cold and calculating.

"Members of the pack," he said in a deep, menacing voice. "I’ve called you here tonight to address a… matter of security."

The throng was murmuring with tension and interest. Oliver's face darkened as he proceeded, lifting a hand to silence them.

He paused and looked across the room, lingering on me once more before turning away. "Recently, I’ve been made aware of… certain threats," he continued. "Threats that could endanger not only my leadership but the stability of our pack."

A wave of uneasiness swept across the audience. A few of the more senior wolves looked at each other, their faces becoming tight.

Is he referring to me? His comments and the way he looked at me gave the impression that he was addressing me directly without mentioning my name.

Leo had cautioned me and advised me to keep my head down, but I wasn't sure how long I could remain undetected. Oliver seemed to be focusing on me, waiting for me to make a mistake, regardless of what he knew or suspected.

Oliver went on, "Be on your guard," in a steady yet foreboding tone. "We cannot allow any weakness, any… hidden agendas to threaten the pack."

As I busied myself with the tray of beverages, raising it and going about the room as the omegas were told to do, I swallowed hard and tried to maintain a neutral expression. I had to appear helpful, unnoticeable, and submissive.

However, as soon as I arrived at the front of the room, where Oliver was standing with his inner circle, I felt a searing agony in my brain. Like a hot spike being pushed into my head, it came suddenly and brutally. I gasped and stumbled to keep my footing, almost spilling the tray.

A slight buzzing sounded in my ears, and I felt my hold relax. The faces of the pack members twisted and blurred as though they were submerged in water, and the room seemed to swirl around me.

I was startled out of the fog by a harsh voice that yelled, "What are you doing?" Oliver's bitter, enraged eyes were fixed on me when I blinked and looked up.

"S-sorry," I stumbled, attempting to regain my composure. However, the agony persisted, gnawing at my thoughts, making me lightheaded and confused.

He scoffed, his lips quivering in contempt. "Clumsy omega," he said. "Can’t even handle a simple task, can you?"

I sensed that the pack was watching me, and their laughter and contempt washed over me like a tsunami. I lifted the tray again and forced myself to look down, ignoring the discomfort.

However, as I continued walking, I noticed that my vision was becoming blurry and that the buzzing in my ears was getting louder. The air was heavy and oppressive, and the room was too hot. I was unable to think or breathe...

The tray abruptly fell out of my grasp, and the glasses shattered as they struck the ground. Before I could stop myself, I staggered forward, my hand slapping against something warm and solid as cold liquid sprayed over my hands and arms.

I was horrified to see who I had just dumped the drink on as I looked up.

Alpha Oliver.

There was silence in the room. Everyone was staring at me, and I could feel their disbelief and astonishment bearing down on me like a real weight.

Oliver's eyes narrowed as he gazed down at the wet spot smearing across his shirt, his face contorted in anger. "You worthless omega," he growled in a low, lethal voice. "How dare you..."

"Do you think you can just waltz in here and make a fool of me in front of the entire pack?" Even though his voice was gentle, it carried a warning that chilled my blood.

As I struggled to free myself from his hold, I muttered, "I… I didn’t mean to," but he simply tightened his hold while grinning cruelly.

"Pathetic," he spat. "Do you realize that you are nothing? Nothing but a stain on this pack."

I sat up groggily, squinting at the early light that spilled into the cage after the guard's gruff voice startled me awake. His eyes gleamed with a tinge of cruelty as he grinned. “Thought you’d just sit around, Omega? Get going. You’ve got chores, and I don’t mean the easy kind.”Before I could gather myself, two other guards grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me from the cell. My muscles objected, tight from spending the night on the chilly stone floor, but I forced myself to ignore the pain and keep from letting them know how miserable I was."Where are we going?" Hating the tremble in my voice, I asked. The guard shrugged, a bored look flashing into his eyes. With a tone full of faux innocence, he said, "Just to help with some chores."I suppressed a sigh, accepting that I would be flung around like the pack's personal puppet for another day. I attempted to maintain my composure as they guided me farther into the dungeons, convincing myself that I could handle this.

What did Leo do?” Outside the pack house, I pushed my way through the swarm of whispering voices and made my demand. One of the bigger wolves hissed, "Back off, runt," and gave me a hard shove that almost knocked me down. I didn't stop, though. I was unable to. My mind was racing, clinging to a single thought: Leo was in trouble.I finally made it to the clearing in the middle, where Oliver was standing with his troops encircling him. His sardonic expression said a lot, but what really stopped me was the grim satisfaction on his face. When Oliver raised his hand, everyone became silent. He said, "Leo has betrayed this pack," his voice resonating in the quiet, each word piercing my stomach like a stone. "He will go on trial tomorrow. But tonight… tonight, he will rot in a cell.”Like flies buzzing over a body, the pack burst into murmurs and whispers. I balled my fists up. Betrayed? No, I said to myself, "that can't be right." While pacing on the cold stone floor of my little, dim chamber, I whispered to myself, "He's not guilty." The words reverberated quietly in the quiet, but they had no effect on the knot of anxiety in my chest. I kept thinking about Leo's face, how exhausted he had been, and how he had reached through those bars as though it might be our final touch.I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the stranger's accusing look and the bloodstains on Leo's hands and clothing from being dragged through the pack's common area. My mind would not let me rest; all I wanted to do was close my eyes and forget, if only for a short while.Pale light filled my chamber as morning broke, and I made myself sit up. Another day to live—another day in the pack. However, the idea of doing my regular tasks today was intolerable. Oliver's derisive tone and the sneer on his face as he ordered Leo to be cast into the cells were still audible to me. I clenched my fists at the vision, but what could I d

Beside me were Lucas and Maia, whose faces reflected mine: a mixture of resolve and melancholy.Cain came toward us, his eyes full of resolution but his face etched with fatigue. Although he had been among Oliver's most devoted soldiers, the insurrection had altered him. We were leaving him in control after he had fought with us and put his life in danger for the pack."Are you sure about this?" he said softly.I gave a nod. "Cain, you're the greatest option. You are trusted by the pack. They will follow you."He paused, his eyes darting between Maia and Lucas. "How about the three of you? Where are you going?""Somewhere new," was all I said. "A place where we can start again."Cain's face softened as he nodded. "You've done enough for this pack. More than sufficient. Go if this is what you need. We'll be alright."I said my

In the broken remnants of Nightshade's great hall, the firelight wavered, creating unsettling shadows on the stone walls. I had nothing left to offer the pack, but they continued to hover, perhaps awaiting guidance. There was still a weight in my chest. I didn't feel like I had won, even though Oliver was defeated and his rule was overthrown by the people he used to rule.Sitting next to me on a splintered wooden bench, Maia was looking off into space as she absently traced a scar over her arm. Ever the guardian, Lucas stood a few feet away, his gaze sweeping the still audience. After a long pause, Lucas whispered, "They need a leader." He spoke in a quiet, wary tone. "Someone to rebuild what's left."Slowly, I nodded. "They need someone," I said, then looked over at Maia. She stiffened as I stared at her. "Don't even think about it."I cocked my head. "Why not?"She gave a dry laugh, but it was devoid of any humor. "Becaus

The trumpet's call echoed through the broken remains of Nightshade, a sound that once sent fear rippling through the pack but now carried a different weight. A summons. A reckoning.I stood in the heart of the pack's gathering grounds, where months ago, I had watched Leo be condemned to death. My fingers tightened into fists at my sides as I forced myself to take in every detail... the stone platform, the lofty arches, the wooden beams above that had once felt oppressive. The torches flickered, casting long shadows against the walls, just like they had that night.Only this time, it wasn't Leo standing before the pack.It was Oliver. He was on his knees in the center of the hall, bound, his body battered and broken. Blood matted his dark hair, his once-imposing body slumped forward in exhaustion. The very warriors who had formerly battled under him stood around the perimeter of the hall, their gazes flitting between me and the fall

There was silence on the battlefield. The silence was not one that resulted from relief or tranquility. It was the thick, stifling type that comes after a storm, as though the world itself was holding its breath. The ground was covered in fallen people, and the air was heavy with the smell of smoke and blood. With a mixture of amazement and incredulity, the rebels who had survived the slaughter and were still standing glanced at Anna.Oliver was lying at her feet, immobile and broken. His burnt body stood out sharply against the blood-soaked ground below, and his once-imposing figure had now collapsed into a crumpled heap. He was not yet dead, but he was very nearly so. His chest rose and fell in weak, irregular spasms, and his breaths were shallow. With her shoulders heaving and her hands still burning dimly from the last of her power, Anna stood over him. Her hair was knotted and wild, and her face was stained with blood and filth, but her ey

All I could do was observe. My entire existence begged me to step in, step in, and support Anna as she faced Oliver alone. However, I was unable to.I shouldn't.This was her fight.Standing opposite Oliver, Anna's body was bruised and covered in blood, yet her unwavering will remained burning. I had never seen the raw electricity crackle in the air around her before. It was hazardous, untamed, and wild. There was nothing weak about the dim glow that flickered from her palms, like a fading ember. The ground beneath her boots seemed to be reacting to her, quivering in expectation of what lay ahead.Oliver rolled his shoulders and grinned as though this were merely a minor annoyance. I shuddered at his self-assurance. For so long, he had ruled by terror, destroying anybody who tried to oppose him. He now considered Anna to be simply another idiot who believed they could prevail. However, she wasn't.

My muscles ached from the never ending battle, and I was breathing in ragged breaths, but there was no time to pause. Another life was lost with every second that passed.Maia was down.Across the field, I saw her fall, hitting the ground with a horrible crack. As I surged at her, avoiding an enemy's claws at the last second, my stomach knotted in terror."Maia!" I fell on my knees next to her. Her breathing was shallow, and blood was leaking from a deep wound along her shoulder. Her body trembled uncontrollably as she attempted to push herself up. The rebels' bodies were tense with expectation as they stood at the forest's edge, concealed by the thick undergrowth. The clearing where Oliver's fortress stood in the distance was stricken with weird shadows as moonlight seeped through the treetops. To steady myself, I shifted my weight and clenched my fingers into fists. I thought the others could hear how loudly my heart was beating.I heard a sharp crack to my left. "It’s almost time."It wasn’t just a statement; it was a reckoning. The kind of words that carried the gravity of everything we had fought for, everything we had lost, and everything we stood to lose. Even though he was trying so hard to hide it, I could detect the slight tremor behind his firm tone. It was the shudder of a man who was preparing for what was about to happen.I let out a breath and looked out over the area of land in front of us. As though the world itself were holding its breath for what was about to happen, the night was strangely calm. Tension permeated the air, the kind that caused your chest to tighten and your skin to prickle. Long, jagged shadows were cast over the assembled rebels by the orange glare of distant fires. As though they were restless too, the flames danced madly, reflecting the uneasiness that descended upon us all. With low murmurs and deliberate movements, the rebels moved in quiet tones. The stench of mistrust was nearly oppressive.Ronan, the man in question, stood still, his palms raised in a gesture of peace.
