"I... You just... " another kick. This one from Emilia. She shook her head no and somehow he understood what she was saying. If he pointed out that Zander had called him dad, it would make him aware that he was letting his guard down. Then in the future, he’d probably be careful of what he said. Max didn't want that. He wanted to hear Zander call him dad every day. So he followed Emilia's advice and kept his mouth shut.

On the way out, Max asked the server who’d attended to them to do whatever he wanted with the untouched food, then paid double to compensate them for all the trouble. Once at home, he dropped them off at the front door and then went to park the car in the garage. As he was leaving, he bumped into Lisandra.

"Hey babe, where were you?"

"That is none of your business," he told her, walking towards the back door and feeling irritated when she followed him. He didn't want anything to do with her, especially since he and Emilia had had a wonderful afternoon. They’d made prog

Max stopped inside the door, his gaze bouncing between the two women sleeping. His eyes remained fixed on the beeping monitor as he blinked multiple times, trying to control the overwhelming emotions. His mother lay on the bed with tubes stuck in her arm. Next to her, Lisandra was sleeping after spending the night looking after her. Whenever he thought of scenarios like that, the person standing beside him was always Emilia. She would support him through hard times and her presence would calm him. Because she was his anchor. But at the moment, he felt lost. Unsure of how to react to everything happening around him. One second he was thinking of what to get his pregnant wife and the next she was nowhere to be found. His mother was in the hospital and his sister claimed it was his wife's doing.Of course, he didn't believe it. Emilia, his sweet Emilia, would never hurt a fly. If she had been the one lying in that bed and she told him his mother did it, Max would have believed it. He kne

"I came as soon as I heard""Heard what?""That your wife came back. What does that bitch want? And why are you letting her stay with you, Max? Have you lost your mind?""I think his head is in perfect condition. But you won't be able to use yours the next time you call me a bitch," Emilia announced, walking into the study. She'd seen Preston arrive and decided to eavesdrop a little. Both men sprang up from their chairs, Max smirking while his friend swallowed nervously."Em... Emilia, you... I... It's good to see you""I can't say the feeling is mutual. What do you want Preston?""I came to see my friend. Do I need your permission to do that?" He retorted, recovering quickly. She rolled her eyes. Preston Nash was thirty-two years old. He grew up with Max and they were so close they basically shared girls in school. Well, it was more like they exchanged them between themselves, but who was keeping track of that? Years ago, he'd fooled her into thinking he was on her side. He defended

She took Zander with her and I’m afraid she’ll disappear with him again" that was total bullshit and he didn’t try to pretend otherwise. Nash could see right through him."Yeah, you keep telling yourself that man. I can't believe you still trust her so much after what she did""Giving her my credit card doesn't mean I trust her. It was for Zander’s sake" Another lie. Giving Emilia that card was a sign that he still trusted her completely. He could have come up with excuses about how he knew she was going out with Zander but that would have been a lie.Max didn't care what she did with that card. He just wanted to make her happy. That had to be it. Otherwise, why would she go through the trouble? She was mad that he’d been with Lisandra and was trying to get back at him. In his head, that was the only reason she'd go to such lengths. Upon reaching that conclusion, another realization struck him. His wife wasn't seeing anyone. Which meant he could pursue her. He didn't have to worry about other men because they didn't exist. Moving away from the window, he left the study, heading upstairs. He had plans, some of which included gaining Emilia's affection and trust. But on the landing, he stopped when he saw his mother's bedroom door open. It hit him then that he hadn't seen much of her ever since Gwen's engagement party. Striding towards her room, he knocked. "Mom?" Max called out, even though he knew he wouldn't get a response. In the nine years his mother had been in that wheelchair, she hadn't spoken a single word. The doctors had said that her paralysis hadn't affected her ability to talk. He'd looked for t

"Where do you think you’re going? I’m still talking to you""I’m not doing this with you right now," Emilia hastened her steps, hoping she could get away from her mother-in-law. She was scared and had spent the last two days hiding from her. Making sure they didn’t cross paths. Normally, she would face Genevieve Carter and have it out with her, but the doctor told her to take care of herself. She had to be careful."No one walks away from me. Do you understand?""We'll talk later when... Aaah! " she screamed when Genevieve grabbed a handful of her hair and pulled her to a stop."You will learn to respect me little girl or I will teach you how it's done""Let go of me, Genevieve. You're hurting me""It is Mrs. Carter to trash like you. Now listen carefully. This is the last time I will tell you to leave my son alone. She was on her way out of her bedroom when she almost bumped into Mel "Hey are you okay? It’s too early to look like that""I'm fine Mel. Where are you going?""I just came from Genevieve’s room. Have you spoken to her?""No. Why would I go anywhere near her?" she asked, confused. Not seeing each other for years didn't erase their history."It's okay Em. She can't do anything now. You don't have to be afraid of her""I'm not afraid""Then talk to her. I think it's time you two had a conversation. Although I can't guarantee she would talk to you, but you can get some things off your chest""What's the use?""You'll unburden yourself. It's good for the soul," she said, patting her arm, then left. Emilia wondered if Mel could read her mind. Would talking to Genevieve give her some kind of closure?Squaring her shoulders, Emilia walked toward her mother-in-law’s room. Knocking once before entering. The place hadn't changed. The bed, the decor, even the woman lying in bed, hadn't changed.

On his way to find Emilia, Max bumped into Zander. “Good morning”“Where is mom? She wasn’t in the bedroom”“She has her own room now,” He responded, hoping the child was too young to understand the meaning. No such luck.“Did you make her angry again? Aunt Thea says I’m the only person who can get away with that”“Any tips on what I should do to make her forgive me?”“Flowers and diamonds. Girls like shiny things”Max couldn’t help feeling proud. His son gave better advice than his best friend. He couldn’t wait to rub it in Nash’s face.“Have Mel make you breakfast. Tell her I said you could eat whatever you want”Zander nodded, then left. He moved to the guest bedroom and stopped in front of the door. In the past, whenever Emilia got angry, all he had to do was corner her and ask for forgiveness. Was it still the same, or had she changed? Pushing the door open, he went inside. Emilia was curled up in bed, reminding him of the time he’d brought her back all those years ago. He’d come

EMILIA & MAX He didn't have to worry about the kids. They loved staying with the Jennings, especially now that they'd adopted a little girl. Zander was fascinated by Blossom while Gabby treated her as her doll. Soon Max was sure they were going to have sleepovers and joint parties. He had an hour before his flight so he called Darren. Gwen's outburst had reminded him how he'd neglected them over the years compared to when they were young. He thought they were grown-ups and didn't need him anymore but they were still his siblings. Even when he was grieving, he still had to remember he wasn't the only one who'd lost a mother. They both had. Now three of them only had each other. There was also the fact that his girlfriend had lied about who she was and her actions had led to their mother's death. He couldn't imagine the kind of pain Darren was going through. "Hey, what's up?" "I brought the kids to the Jennings for the weekend and I have an hour. Wanna have a drink?" "No thanks. I

He loved being a dad and every time Blossom made a sound, he'd rush to see what their daughter wanted. The adoption process had been hard but it was worth it. THEA & PRESTON Thea looked around sighing. While newly married women were on their honeymoon, she was busy at the office trying to solve the latest crime which just happened to be a breaking and entering case. Because she'd held her wedding out of the blue, her boss had told her to first tie up some loose ends before taking her vacation days. She'd never wanted to punch the man so bad. It wasn't as if she was the only cop in the building and she was only taking two weeks off. At one point she'd even thought of resigning but she loved being a cop. So she was busy debating whether to ask for a transfer to another division. Could she be better at something else? Say traffic police or... The thought of it had her shivering. She would rather quit than join another division and start all over again. But as much as she loved her job, it wasn't fair to Preston. DARREN Even though he knew the streets of New York like the back of his hand, Darren felt lost. Every time he looked up, it took him a moment to remember where he was and why he was there. Sometimes he'd find himself in a place but not recall how he got there. If he'd listened to Preston and not rushed to fall in love, he wouldn't be in that situation. A few days after his mother's death, Nadia, no, Oksana had gone to him and confessed everything. She thought he needed to know who she was and why she'd approached him. He needed to come up with new ways to distract her from asking about his job. Although she wasn't complaining. He had a way of making her forget everything with only a simple touch. She tried to remember if anyone had ever made her feel that way. Was there anyone before him? She couldn't recall. No one could compare to the way he made her feel. It was easy to picture them having a girls' day out together with Gwen and Thea. Gabby too. They would go to spas, have their hair and nails done, and do all the girly things she'd missed out on doing with her mother. Her mind conjured the perfect family gathering. With all her friends and family. Wouldn't that be something? "I felt the same way about Max. He looks so much like his father. Seeing that man had made her feel uneasy. All throughout yesterday she was nervous and kept jumping at the smallest sound. Sleep evaded her because she couldn't stop worrying about her children. What if someone broke in and hurt them? She just got Zander back. Losing him would destroy her. Max must have noticed how on edge she was because he took the kids and Mel out, telling her to relax. It was his way of giving her a day off. But all it did was give her more nerves. Instead of resting, she went around the house, looking for something out of the ordinary. A broken window or door. Anything to indicate she wasn't overreacting. Her search stopped outside Genevieve's door. Since Gwen went off on her, she hadn't left her room. Emilia wondered if the woman was repenting. That was if she was capable of repenting. She wasn't a saint but she knew she couldn't ignore her child, especially if he was in the hospital. How had she done it? Genevieve sure was one of a kind. Lisandra's heart skipped a beat just as realization dawned on her. She wasn't free. Those guards had known the police were on their way and they had left after getting rid of any evidence that could point to any of them being there. That was why the house was so clean. They'd scrubbed down every inch of it, probably getting rid of evidence like fingerprints and stray hairs. Son of a bitch, her benefactor had really called the police on her. But why? Their deal was to distract the Carters while she took her revenge. Had she had a change of mind? Damn that bitch to hell. Spinning around, she ran the other way, swearing she would rather die than go back to prison. When she got to the road, her legs quickened, hoping the police cars wouldn't catch up with her. The second they realized the house was empty, they would know she had escaped and start chasing her. As she speed walked, she tried to think of reasons why her benefactor had cast her aside. The guards were acting strangely. Lisandra had been keeping an eye on them and that's how she knew something was up. Ever since she stepped foot in that house, they hadn't let her out of their sight. Everywhere she went they followed. Kitchen, living room, bedroom, and even the bathroom. Their excuse? Her benefactor had told them to keep an eye on her so she wouldn't escape. It didn't make sense that she'd want to escape when she had nowhere to go but that bitch had insisted on having her men there. But before going to bed she noticed how they all sat in the living room watching TV. She had never seen them all together in one place so she thought maybe they were celebrating something or they had come to trust her. However, before she could get to her room, one of them got up and made it there ahead of her. He checked the windows to make sure they were locked then stood outside her door, telling her to hurry up. Normally they just let her do whatever she wanted. Lisandra dragged her
