Chapter 5 Too Busy

Author: Rosa Uchiyamana
“Where’s my pony doll, Papa? You bought me a pony doll, right?”

Archer immediately fell silent. Kimberly’s innocent, hopeful gaze made him speechless.

“Papa, why aren’t you answering?”

Felly smiled bitterly. She had guessed that he would forget about his promise again. This was the third time this year Archer had forgotten his promise to Kimberly.

Bella.

Felly’s hands curled into fists when the name passed her mind, and the carrot in her grip was shaking.

All because Archer was too busy taking care of that woman, he forgot his own daughter’s request.

“Darling.” Archer’s voice was hoarse. He caressed Kimberly’s hair gently. “I could not find the pony doll in Singapore,” he lied with a tightened throat. “I’m sorry. This afternoon, I will—”

Archer’s words were stopped when Kimberly suddenly came down from the chair with pouty lips. Her eyes were teary. She ran upstairs, leaving the dining room.

Kimberly was disappointed. Archer was sure of it. His chest tightened, especially when he saw the carrot and toy knife scattered on the dinner table. Just moments ago, Kimberly was eager to make him breakfast.

“Happy now?” Felly approached him with her cold gaze.

Archer stared at her for a moment. His lips were pressed together.

“How many more times do you plan to disappoint her, Archer?”

“I was too busy in Singapore.”

Felly scoffed.

“Of course. I believe you. You were too busy with that woman!” she hissed, “Don’t even bother to come home next time. Go take care of that sick woman, and don’t waste your time on your own child!”

Felly went back to the kitchen. She tried to calm her ragged breath caused by her flared emotions.

Archer clenched his fists until his veins looked prominent. His jaw clenched. He walked towards Felly and stared at her back with an icy glare.

“Watch your words,” Archer said with an emphasis. “Did you forget who made her sick?”

Felly fell silent. She had already figured out how his argument would go.

“Because of you!” Archer accused her heartlessly. “If you hadn’t hit Bella that day, she wouldn’t have been disabled and sick! She would’ve become a famous violinist. She wouldn’t have to suffer for your selfishness! She—"

“Enough!” Felly cut his words, and she glared back at him. “You haven’t had enough of blaming me for the past four years, Archer? You still hate me, right? Then why didn’t you divorce me?!”

Archer fell silent. His gaze darkened.

“It’s not that simple, Felly,” he replied with a tone as cold as ice. “All her life, Bella will always suffer because of your selfishness. And here you think I should let go of you?”

Archer shook his head and smirked. “You’re in the palm of my hand. You should never be happier than Bella could.”

After saying that, Archer turned around and left Felly.

Felly fell silent.

Her heart ached even when she tried her hardest not to take his words to her heart. There was no peaceful moment whenever they were together. Archer always had thousands of ways to hurt her. Over and over. She did not know when Archer would be satisfied with his revenge and stopped hurting his own wife’s heart.

Felly exhaled deeply to ease the tightness in her chest. Each time she drew her breath, she felt pain.

Honestly, there was one thing she never understood. Archer always said that Felly hit Bella because of her selfishness.

What selfishness did he refer to? Felly wondered on her mind.

Was there something Felly did not know? Or, was it something Bella told Archer, which angered him and made him hate Felly?

She could not possibly know.

Felly sighed wearily. Whatever it was, Felly did not want to discuss or ask Archer about it. That man would never believe a word she uttered.

Blossom Boutique was not an ordinary boutique. It was a famous boutique and the customers were mostly celebrities and conglomerates. Felly started her business from scratch. Although she came from a wealthy background, Felly never used her family name, “Ferlando,” to expand her business. Everything came purely from her hard work.

Any stroke her hand created never failed. Any clothes she designed always brought happiness to her customers. Anyone who ever ordered anything from Blossom Boutique always came back for at least the second time.

This afternoon, Felly spent her lunchtime with Sarah, her childhood best friend, in Blossom Boutique.

“What’s with your child?”

Upon that question, Felly turned to the table next to them. Kimberly was drawing with her crayons on a drawing book with a sad look on her face.

Ever since what had happened this morning, that girl had been low. She was only three years old, but she had been a sensitive kid with a gentle heart. Especially when it came to her father. The pony doll this morning was the perfect example.

Felly had tried to console her and then brought her to the boutique with the hope that her disappointment would fade a little. But until afternoon came, her mood had not changed.

“The usual problem. Something with her father.”

“Oh. I see.”

Sarah nodded and did not ask anything anymore. She did not want to mingle with her best friend’s family affair.

“Sarah, you were right. He went to Singapore to see that woman.”

Sarah was almost choked on her matcha latte. “He … I mean, Archer, he told you himself?”

Felly nodded.

“And? You did nothing when your husband was gone for a month to—”

“Lower your voice,” Felly cut her off. She was worried Kimberly might hear.

“Oops. Sorry.” Sarah lowered her voice and leaned closer towards Felly. “You didn’t do anything when your husband was seeing that woman for a month, Felly? A month, Felly. One whole month.”

Sarah was infuriated by Felly’s patience in facing her husband.

“What can I do anyway?” Felly smiled bitterly. “Even if I try to stop him or get upset, in the end, he will only blame me.”

“But at least, Archer should know that Bella isn’t as good as he thought. Bella is manipulative, Felly.”

“I know.”

Felly took a deep breath. Yes, Bella was manipulative. Felly was aware of that.

When Felly still went to college in France with Archer, Bella did anything in her power to attract him.

Felly and Archer’s friendship was ruined because of her and they grew apart from each other. Archer used to always have time for Felly, but since he started dating Bella, he kept her distance. It was as if Bella was his top priority. Archer treated Bella as if she were a precious, antique object.

“But there’s no use even if I tell Archer now.” Again, Felly smiled bitterly. “It will only make him hate me even more.”

At this point, Sarah could no longer say anything. Sarah admired Felly for what she had endured for the past four years. If it was any other woman, Sarah was sure no woman would stay in such a marriage.

“Where’s my kid?” Felly was shocked when she realized she could not find Kimberly anywhere in the café. On the table next to them, her crayons and drawing book were scattered on the table. “Wait, I need to go find Kimmy.”

Felly rose from her chair and went out to look for Kimberly. She was always worried about letting that child go out alone. Especially with the rising cases of harassment towards children lately.

“Mama!”

The cheerful squeal made her sigh in relief.

“Mama! I got my pony doll!” Kimberly exclaimed once again in a happy tone.

Felly was surprised. She immediately scooped up her daughter who was holding a pony doll, which was almost the same size as her tiny figure.

She dabbed her damp clothes with the tissue from Ryan. “Oh. You must be Felly’s husband.” Ryan stood up. He smiled, extending his hand to shake Archer’s. He tried to be polite to Felly’s husband. “Hello, my name’s Ryan,” he said calmly.Archer turned his gaze from Felly to Ryan’s hand. Felly shook her head. She smiled ironically when Archer accused her of such a painful accusation. Her heart ached to hear his words. It was as if she was a bad mother for Kimberly.“Yes. You’re right. I told Kimberly to beg for the doll to another man who will become her future stepfather.” Felly smirked seeing Archer’s expression grow grimmer and his eyes darken. “Isn’t that what you want to hear, Archer?”“Apparently, the woman my parents trust is a shameless woman.” Archer gritted his teeth, holding back his anger. “Yes, let’s just say I am shameless. So what? You never cared about my life anyway.”Felly feigned a sweet smile. Both of her hands were fisted and locked above her head. “Ah, right. I just remembered. If having lunch with my client is shameless, then what about your lover, Archer?” Felly blinked, making a feigned innocent face. “She knows you’re a married man, and she’s still seeing you?”Felly’s chuckle filled the room, echoing to every corner. Archer was not sure what to feel when he heard Kimberly. There was a disappointment. His own daughter whom he had been raising, failed to see his effort to give her the best he could. On the other hand, there was a self-hatred. How could he forget what his daughter wanted? Now, she was disappointed in him.Archer sighed heavily while walking downstairs. He called Amy—their maid, who was cleaning a porcelain jar under the stairs. Amy immediately came to him. “Can I help you, sir?”“Prepare ice compress. Bring it to Felly’s room and help her …,” Archer trailed off as he thought to himself. He remembered Felly was naked under the cover, so he changed his mind. Just prepare the compress. I’ll do the rest.”Amy blinked. She was surprised by her employer’s unusual request. During her time working for them, this was the first time he made a request for Felly. Usually, Felly always did everything on her own, even when she was sick. “Okay, sir. I’ll prepare the ice.” Amy excused herself to th

Felly’s whole body was aching when she woke up. Her wrists were not as red as they were before. They did not hurt as much. That was strange, she thought. She remembered before falling asleep, her wrists were very red. Felly got off the bed. Her clothes were scattered on the floor before, but now she saw that they were tidily folded on the sofa. That could not be Archer’s doing, right? In the past, after Archer took what was his right, he always left Felly and her aching heart. After cleaning her body and changing clothes, Felly looked for Kimberly. But Kimberly was not in her room. “Zoe, where’s Kimmy?” Felly went to Zoe’s room in the back of the house. The room there was for their workers. “Oh? Kimmy was with Mr. Archer, Ma’am.”Felly was not surprised to hear that. “Where did they go?”“To Dan’s ice cream shop.”Felly nodded. She left the room and sighed heavily. Felly was never worried about Archer taking Kimberly anywhere. She knew Archer really loved their daughter.Unfortunat

“Mama! We’re going to see Aurora?”“Mhm.”“Uncle Aaron too? Uncle Aaron is home?!”“Yes, darling.“Yeay!”Kimberly’s squeals and giggles felt like a balm for Archer’s exhaustion. Just like in the past, Archer was never at peace in his own house. Every day felt suffocating for him. This luxurious house with all its facilities could not make his heart at peace. It was so different from Bella’s simple house. Even when he got angry at Bella’s mistake, she never talked back or cursed at him. Bella always obeyed him. Maybe that was what made him feel comfortable and always loved her. Archer pulled out his phone. He was just about to call Bella when the steps of high heels were heard going downstairs. It was followed by tiny footsteps running to him. “Papa! Am I pretty?” Kimberly giggled. She stared at Archer with gleaming eyes. Her iris was the same as her mother’s. They were hazel. Archer rose from the sofa. He cupped his daughter’s cheeks. “Yes, you are. My daughter always looks beaut

Archer immediately shut up. His jaw clenched as he stared back at Aaron with a sharp glare. Did Aaron find out about him and Bella? Did he also know something about what happened in Archer’s marriage with Felly?Archer was wondering to himself. His fists were clenching.“What do you mean?” Archer asked in an icy tone. The room was silent. Rosemary and Felly exchanged a look. Meanwhile, Axl was sipping his coffee calmly, as if he did not care about the tension between his sons. “I think you’d know where I’m going with this?” Aaron smirked. Aaron's question made Archer more sure. Aaron must have known something about Archer’s marriage. “You really went out of your way just to find out—”“Hahaha!” Aaron’s laugh echoed in the room. It was so sudden. He burst out laughing while holding his stomach.Everyone but Aaron was confused.“You’re laughing now? Something’s funny?” Archer hissed. But in the end, she did not think she wanted to care. “The drive home takes a long time,” he replied.“Felly’s right.” Aaron finally chimed in. He scooted to turn to Archer. “Why the rush? We can only see the family every two weeks or even a month.”Archer let out a sharp exhale. “There’s a work thing I need to finish tonight.”“Oh. Then you go ahead. I can take Felly and Kimmy home later.”“No,” Archer tried to steady his tone. After all, they had two children present with them. “Kimmy goes to bed early. She can’t sleep late.”“Then let them stay the night. You should go home if you need to finish work. You guys usually stay the night, right?”Felly realized Archer’s face

Until that moment, Cecilia had not received it from Archer. "Mama, am I off school again today?" The hoarse voice of her daughter who had just woken up distracted Felly from her thoughts. She then smiled and nodded. "Yes, for now." "Why? I didn’t go yesterday, and the day before that.” Felly smiled and then picked Kimberly up to her lap.
