Olivia's pov

The stench was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. My eyes watered and a surge of unease washed over me. Rising from my chair, I motioned to everyone in the room, signalling them to follow. Determination took hold as I moved towards the palace doors, instinct steering my steps.

The moment we stepped outside, the full force of the smell hit us, mingling with thick, dark smoke as acrid as the scent of burning rubber. It clawed its way into my lungs, making me cough and cover my mouth with my hand.

Alexander came up beside me, his eyes scanning the area with an urgency that mirrored my own. "They're burning the bodies," he said, his voice tense. "I've never smelled something so foul."

My senses screamed that something was off, a wrongness that thrummed through the air in waves. "Something isn't right," I muttered, starting towards the immense, glowing pyres a short distance ahead.
