Xander leaped off the ground as he barely dodged an attack. He rolled on the ground with a couple turns as he slowly got up on one knee and winced from the throbbing in his shoulder.
"Kekekeke... Tired so soon? We were just getting started!" the duo cackled, their eyes glowed menacingly red as they both held onto the gnarly scepter.
Xander was a tad too slow as he leapt to the side, resulting in a direct blow from the duo magic casted by the village head and his daughter.
He grimaced as he felt his chest scorching yet his body feeling as if it were rapidly being cooled. Xander's face paled as he forced himself up, readying his sword once again.
"Xander! Are you alright?! You don't need to fight them! Just flee! I'll be fine!"
Xander glanced at Mikhail and pulled a grin, putting on a tough front despite his entire body feeling as if he had been thrown into a pit of flames and then immediately thrown into the cold mountains of the Snow Lucradis.
Despite my bleariness... I should be able to strike them in a fluid motion. They probably think they've weakened me to the point where I can't get up... But... I won't give in! Not like I did back in the flames!
Xander let out a deafening scream as he lunged towards the duo. He swung his sword against them from their side, expecting them to be caught unaware.
His attacks were parried off easily, almost like they had anticipated his movements and were trained as soldiers as they blocked his attacks. They then launched another duo skill, planning to finish him off but failed as he managed to dodge in the nick of time.
Damn! Its almost as if they knew where I was going to strike! Even being able to block off my attacks with that stick! Wait... am I seeing this right? The stick is glowing... and it seems quite bashed up. Maybe...
Xander inhaled a sharp breath as he steadied himself. He calmed himself and readied a fearsome stance. The duo grinned maliciously yet had an inviting atmosphere about them, almost as if they were taunting him with their euphoric expression.
Xander knitted his brows, ignoring the sweat that trickled down his forehead and paced himself to close the distance between them before lunging at their scepter. The duo were caught off guard and fell to the ground as their eyes dimmed tremendously from the bloody red glow it originally had.
"Ah?!" the raven haired girl cried out as she rolled backwards. Blood dripped down the corner of her lips as she glared at Xander.
She then got up to ready a large fireball and aimed it towards Xander, hoping to obliterate him once and for all. The village head however, ran to her side to stop her.
"Susie! No! You don't have enough... ma...na... Eh...?" Though the village head was a mage, he failed to predict how erratic her powers were at that moment as a stray spark of ember struck him directly in the chest causing him to spurt out blood as he gasped from the shock.
Susie glanced towards him with blurry eyes before gasping. The fire ball dissipated like a cloud of smoke as she ran to the side of her father. "Fa-father!"
Xander sighed in relief as he stumbled in his step. He felt light headed and chilly yet felt the scorching heat in his chest burn him from within. He tried to concentrate but couldn't as his vision grew threateningly darker.
Mikhail tugged at his wrist trying to free himself but failed. He was growing more anxious as he saw Xander fainting. He cursed beneath his breath and recited some words, holding onto a sliver of hope that what he imagined would be possible. A glowing white light emitted from the hand stuck in the watery confinement as he squeezed his eyes shut.
Mikhail knitted his brows as he tried concentrating on the burning sensation on his palm. He then squeezed his fist tightly as he tugged on his wrist with his free hand. He stumbled behind and gasped, prying open his eyes to find himself free from the confines of the watery bubble.
"Wha... I did it..."
Mikhail shook his head and immediately ran towards Xander as he tried to wake him. He then panickly pulled Xander away from the scene hoping to avert Susie's unwanted attention. Susie noticed this and glared at Mikhail.
"You... this was all your fault!"
Mikhail flinched as he caught her eyes. They weren't the usual amber coloured eyes that resembled honey but instead was a murky blood red that glowed dangerously.
"I will never forgive you! Eat this! You can join that rotten King in the pits of hell!"
King...?
Mikhail's eyes widened at her words but instinctively shielded Xander with his body. He felt indebted to this man who had saved him countless times. Even if Susie blamed him, there was definitely an explanation!
Susie's usual smiling face was now one twisted with rage as her eyebrows knitted tightly together, almost interwoven like a unibrow. Her teeth gnashed against each other as she pulled her lips into a snarl. Her eyes narrowed in disdain as her eyes bulged, tears of blood streaming down her cheeks.
She knew using the spell was going to wreck herself, yet decided to go along with it. There was no way she would let go of this opportunity to kill the King and the young man that constantly plagued her mind.
"Even if I have to tear myself from the inside... I'll get rid of you to clear my mind of your face... Concentrating throughout this whole battle had been difficult... why couldn't you just stay in the water prison so I didn't need to worr... ... Tsk! Say your prayers!"
Mikhail glanced at Susie with a confused expression as he immediately stood up, staring at her straight on. He gulped down his fears and blurted out something unexpected with a straight face.
"Isn't that because you like me?"
Susie flinched as her cheeks turned a bright red. She was caught off guard and her hands which controlled the fireball faltered. "Wha... Cra... ..."
Even though she wanted to deny it, she was at a loss of words and could only take occasional glances at Mikhail's face.
That's impossible! A guy like him?? He's...
Susie was about to lower her hand but stopped when she remembered her father's sacrifice. She shook her head and glared past Mikhail at Xander who had fainted and was grimacing in the background. It was a little difficult seeing past Mikhail, since he was the only thing she could focus on at the moment.
"Susie... you don't have to do this... vengeance never resolves anything. It only causes more conflict. Whatever you're going through... We can get through it together."
"... together..." Susie mouthed as her face took on a shade of bright red. Her eyes flickered from their murky red to her usual amber eyes as she then lowered her hand.
The fireball dissipated as she walked closer to Mikhail. Mikhail gulped and held onto the sliver of hope he had that Susie wasn't going to kill him.
Squeezing his eyes shut as Susie got closer, he prayed she wasn't going to do anything too painful. If she was going to kill him, hopefully it'll be a fast and painless one.
Instead, he felt something soft leaned against him and his waist being wrapped in something warm. Was she going to tie him up again?
Mikhail warily opened his eyes only to find Susie snugly embracing him. She had buried her face in his chest and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Eh? Er... Um... Susie?"
Susie didn't look up at Mikhail and held more firmly onto him. She mumbled something incomprehensible as she rubbed her face closer against his chest.
Mikhail was now the one at a loss of words. She seemed to have did a full 180° as she was more concerned with him rather than Xan... the King.
Mikhail glanced towards Xander and then grasped Susie's shoulders, pulling her off him as he stared at her face expectantly. Susie's flushed red cheeks seemed to grow a hint redder as she shut her eyes and puckered her lips only for her fantasy to be ruined by the few lines Mikhail said.
"Can you stop the spell on Xan... the King? As well as the water prison? Is it possible....?"
Susie frowned before sparing a lazy glance at Xander and the water prison before nodding solemnly. It was the last memory of her father, she'd rather leave it as it is.
"Would you do this for me?" Mikhail asked with a pleading look on his face and a sparkle in his violet eyes.
Susie blushed and nodded, redirecting her gaze towards Xander as she muttered a few lines that seemed unintelligible to Mikhail's ears. He watched as Xander's face which was grimacing from the pain in his chest now seemed far calmer and his pale outlook now seeming far more normal.
Susie then grabbed Mikhail's hand and walked towards the water prison with him stumbling behind her. She wanted him to be close to her and watch her fulfilling the favour he asked of her.
She placed a hand on the water prison and said a few lines. She could just easily heat up the water prison, but that'd boil the people within alive. Mikhail seems to want them alive. Water magic wasn't her specialty but she could handle this for her darling Mikhail.
The people within were still alive, even if they had looked dead as the water was more of the outer layer which resembled something like a forcefield. There was air within and enabled the people to breathe.
The spell was tricky for a mage that dribbled more with fire magic though she had an affinity for both. She squeezed Mikhail's hand for reassurance and he did just that, sending a wave of euphoria through her body.
Within minutes, the water prison burst open, spilling out the people on top of one another as Susie quickly got rid of the excess water by turning them to steam.
Mikhail stared in amazement at Susie's mastery over her powers and tugged at her hand for her to look his way. He then complimented her, patting her head as he then let go of her hand and rushed towards Xander.
Susie watched Mikhail's receding features as he rushed towards Xander. She smiled faintly before touching her head where Mikhail had patted her. It still felt warm, just like the hand that had held his.
She grinned to herself before giddily running after Mikhail and hugging him from the back. Mikhail was surprised but said nothing. He knew Susie had always been a touchy type of person. Instead, he asked her to help him lift Xander up and into a shady part of the village entrance.
Susie frowned but complied. After realising her feelings, it was much easier to bear with the thought of aiding this man. She wasn't exactly close with her father but showed him some ounce of respect for taking care of the village all these years. If anything, she was quite glad he was gone. Now she could focus her everything on Mikhail.
Mikhail shivered as he rubbed his shoulders. It wasn't chilly or anything so he just thought that he was coming down with a cold. He got up to look for his mother to get her aid as Xander's wounds looked severe. As he approached the pile of people, he couldn't find her and was confused.
"Susie...?"
"Yes?♡"
"... ... Er... My mother isn't here..."
"Huh? Oh, we didn't see her. We were actually looking for her when we bumped into you. We scoured the entire village but she wasn't there. I don't know if she was lucky or not... Hmm..."
"S-Susie! Then... doesn't that mean something is wrong?"
"Eh? Perhaps... I did see another mage cloaked in black. But he didn't seem to be doing anything so I didn't bother telling my father."
Mikhail frowned as beads of sweat formed on his forehead. His eyebrows were knitted and his throat felt dry.
Isn't this... A kidnapping? Mother wouldn't leave me alone in the village unless we both agreed on something. Her room wasn't cleared either... This is bad...

"My lady... I have something to report. It's regarding that woman, Diane."
"Oh! Is it done? Perfect!"
"That's not all... Your husband..."
"What?"
"He's badly injured."
"WHAT?!"
Lilith widened her eyes as she dropped the golden goblet and grabbed the messenger's shirt. She gritted her teeth menacingly as her face flushed red in anger.
"Why is he injured?! Can't you do anything right?! Leave! I'll deal with this!"
"My apologies, my lady..."
Lilith harrumphed as she exited her royal chambers, walking speedily towards Xander's study as she looked for a head that resembled a seaweed. Noticing the man with the head she thought of, she called him towards her.
"Ye-yes, My Queen? How may I be of service to you?" Louis asked as he genuflected nervously.
He was unaccustomed to Lilith finding him as she usually handles tasks pertaining to the royal staffs or meetings with advocates from neighbouring countries which she had her own advisor to aid her.
"Mobilise the Blood Knights."
"Eh? Pardon?"
"Don't make me repeat myself. Xander is gravely wounded. ... Or do you doubt my authority?"
"No! No, of course not! Please pardon my impertinence. I will mobilise them immediately. ... To... Tefflander?"
"Yes. Make haste." Lilith said as she left Louis who was still bowing with his head lowered.
Ughhh.... These royals! They're such a pain! One wrong move and my head is off! Why do they keep mobilising all the important battalions? What if something happens here? Even talking with them is a dance with the devil! Louis wailed mentally as he got up and headed towards the barracks only to be stopped by William.
"Hey, I want to ask you..."
Agh! Just kill me now! Another one?! I'll die if they have another child! Louis groaned mentally as he put on his custom service smile.
Mikhail slumped against the tree beside Xander with a solemn look on his face. He rested his head in his hands as he sighed deeply. His mother is gone. There were so many things that had plagued his mind."Mikhail? Are you okay? If you're worried about those people, don't. They're fine. They'll get up soon. Just pay attention to me." Susie said as she rubbed her cheeks affectionately on his arm.Mikhail didn't seem to hear her as his thoughts kept drifting back to two days ago when he last saw his mother. He was forcefully separated with her as the villagemen dragged him to accompany them during the riot. Now, he had no idea where she was. It had finally dawned on him that his home wasn't the one back at Vogrant, but within the loving embrace of his mother.A slight movement caught his eyes as he turned to face Xander. He immediately aided Xander who was struggling to sit upright. He felt a tinge of guilt that he had made Xander's injuries worse as he tried his bes
"It seems... she was abducted after all..." Xander said with a sigh as he ran his fingers through his hair exasperatedly.Mikhail looked at him with conflicted emotions before slumping into his seat beside Xander. He rested his face in his palms as he sighed miserably. The Platinum Knights and Blood Knights had scoured the entirety of the forest as well as the village and hadn't found any signs of a woman matching Diane's descriptions. They eventually were forced to turn up empty-handed and felt concerned when they noticed Xander's expression which had immediately turned grim.Xander stared at the black cloak in his hand that was the only other thing that could possibly be linked to her disappearance. The cape that he had lent to her prior her abduction was now draped across his shoulders, where it originally belonged. He sighed once more before touching the dark and furry hem of his cape. Now that she was missing, the cape was the last thing he c
Days came and went, yet Mikhail kept himself to his room. He'd occasionally dine with Susie who would insist on seeing him eat the dish she prepared, though he had doubted her cooking for a few days due to memories of the time he was drugged. Susie made full use of Xander's name as an excuse to get him out of his room, even though she has to mumble out his name with respect to do so.Xander had to leave a day after Mikhail shut himself in his room, leaving Susie to watch after Mikhail's meals, much to his chagrin. Susie merely snickered at the opportunity given to herself and chased Xander out of the village immediately after accepting the request."Mikhail, open up. Let's eat.""... I'm not hungry.""I'd bring up that baldie's name to get you out of your room but I don't want to. Instead of that old geezer's name..."Susie cut off her sentence and then broke through Mikhai
Xander pondered Mikhail's request as he thought of the heavy workload of his troops and Mikhail's current physique. He felt a little bad for Mikhail but steeled himself to tell him his respond."Well... If we're talking about the Blood Knights and the Platinum Knights... then, I have to apologise. There's no way you could possibly join them. They are skilled Knights who have proved themselves in countless battles even way back during my youth.""I... I see..." Mikhail said as he lowered his eyes, his face grew hot from embarrassment while tears pricked his eyes. This rejection felt as if his little light of hope had been shattered to pieces."However...""E... eh?" Mikhail's eyes widened as he hadn't expected a continuation to Xander's sentence after that cold rejection."None of them started a skilled warrior. Just like me, I had to work hard to get to where I currently am, yet,
Mikhail flopped onto his bed before curling into a ball. Thoughts of his birthright danced in his head. He found it difficult to process that he was a prince. He rolled around in his sheets for a bit before finally spreading out his arms and legs and staring at the ceiling. He furrowed his brows before moving to get up.Mikhail sat upright and glanced at the neatly packed suitcase he tucked in the corner of his room before stumbling over to the rickety bookshelf he made a few days after moving to Tefflander. He reached out to a worn looking book and tugged at it's spine. He sighed at the weight in his hand before flipping it open. The loose pages threatened to scatter but Mikhail was having none of that today. He continued flipping through the pages until a light purple paper pressed with a blue flower came into view.Mikhail held onto the bookmark as he set the book back into it's spot on his booksh
The road to the capital city was smoothly paced. The scenery of the beautiful autumn leaves floating down, lacing the road with strips of red, orange and yellow were a sight to behold.Mikhail however had his head looking downwards to glance at the rein in his hands. It was a pretty foreign feeling for him.All his life he had been tasked with walking all over the village to harvest, plant or help someone elderly with their chores. He hadn't had much practice with riding a horse ever since the last time roughly seven years ago when his mother had taught him."Mikhail, why are you looking downwards?" Xander asked as he spared a glance in Mikhail's direction."Eh?! Uh... I... Truthfully... haven't practiced riding in a long while... I'm scared I might fall and embarrass myself.""I see. You shouldn't put your head down, though. Horses are sensitive creatures. If you're
William gritted his teeth as he thought back on the scene that replayed in his mind. He felt infuriated that his father showered a stranger with heaps of attention eventhough it was someone he had met not too long ago.Who does he think he is? Hero? Pah! What a joke!William clenched his fist as he stormed his way through the crowd of people who were focused on getting to safety, not caring that they were bumping into a member of royalty."What's the situation?" William asked as he glanced at a nearby soldier who seemed to be at a loss at the situation and pulled on his pair of dark gloves, assessing the situation."P-prince William! Salutations! We're doing everything we can to get the situation under control. But with all the citizens running amok..." the soldier replied with a salute before trailing off on his sentence.William clicked his tongue as he turned his gaze
"This... might be bad..." Louis said as he turned to face Mikhail. "Wh-what's the problem? Is it... an unknown poison?" Mikhail asked as he glanced towards Xander who was grimacing from the pain as his body occasionally twitched and his face grew paler. "No. I know the antidote for this poison. However... the problem is... I do not have either of those ingredients available on hand." Louis said as he straightened his glasses. When did he put on a pair of glasses... No wait, that's not the point... "What are the ingredients?" Mikhail asked as he shook his head to clear off the irrelevant thoughts and stared directly at Louis. "This is called the Everfrost Dying Wish Poison. The poison is made by mixing an extract of the essence of an Everfrost flower with a Cecilia Waterlily." "Erm... What's that..." Mikhail asked as he stared blankly at Louis.
"Are you up?" Mikhail pries his eyes open groggily before he groans and rubs at them before turning towards the source of the voice."Whu--?" Mikhail blurts out a confused reply as he blinks his bleary eyes at William, waiting for them to focus but grew drowsy in the meantime."It's high time you get up. It's the second time in my life where I had to personally wake you up." William sighs as Mikhail's eyes slowly shut."Don't you dare fall asleep! We need to move out while it's still lights out. The terrain is more dangerous at night and we need to be able to pinpoint where to go from here." William frowns as he shakes Mikhail awake."F-five minutes more..." Mikhail tried to keep his eyes open but couldn't help it as the grogginess overwhelmed him.William released Mikhail's shoulders as he frowns, knitting his eyebrows in annoyance. Without thinking twice, he grabs the hides out of Mikhail's reach and tossed them to the other end of the tent, fold
"Hup! Easy!" William steadies his horse as he approached the deserted camp. The men behind him murmur in silence as he spares a glance at the messenger. He purses his lips and led them towards the stable before hopping off his horse. It's unlikely that the messenger is lying to me. But even if he is, I'd better keep a safe distance for myself from the group. "I'll look around. Remain vigilant!" William instructed as I kept a calm expression to ensure they don't think something was amiss. The messenger stated that there would be someone to greet me once I arrive. Yet, there is nary a soul nearby. Did something occur? William keeps a wary hand on the hilt of his blade as he surveyed the empty tents that were billowing with the frosty wind. Whatever footsteps that could have been used to track down where they could possibly have gone were covered in the cloak of white.
Venturing further up to the north was where the enemy camp was located. Arthur holds onto the contract, glancing at its content as he purses his lips and knits his brows. He looked over his shoulder, thinking about his sister and everyone back at the camp before frowning. However, as he turned to look forward, he shakes his head and sighs.Men clad in jet black armor with red lining greeted him with a few warning arrows before he climbed off his horse. Arthur slips a note he had written prior to leaving the camp between the stallion's caparison before sending it off by startling it into running away.He watched the men try to shoot it down or run after it but failed as the horse ran past them. A sigh of relief escapes his lips that he had brought along his beloved horse before a burly man approached him and covered his head with a bag."You do know who I am, right?" Arthur frowns as the man shoved hi
"I can't." Arthur pushes Soleil off his arm as he grabs the contract and leaves the tent.Soleil glances at the flap swaying back and forth from where Arthur had left as she flicks her tongue in silence. She then slithers over to Mikhail, her faintly golden scales reflecting the light of the oil lamp on the desk.Mikhail holds his head and grimaces before blinking his eyes, slowly making out Soleil's presence as he sits up straight. He stares at her for a moment before glancing at his hands that were tightly restrained by some thick ropes."Shall I get you out?" Soleil slithers up his arm as Mikhail shakes his head, unlike what she expected him to do."No. I need to show my sincerity and that I truly wish to help him.""Is that so? But would that require you to be restrained like so?" Soleil wraps herself around his neck, dangling loosely like a jewellery as Mikhail sighed to himself."Tigris showed me a memory of young Arthur. He woul
Back at Trevault or somewhere fairly close to Trevault, Mikhail kneels stiffly as Arthur paces around him. Even if he wanted to make an excuse, the way he was caught clearly puts him at a disadvantageous spot regardless.Mikhail shifts uncomfortably before straightening his back upon noticing Arthur's narrowed gaze. His legs had been growing number by the second and he could only feel pins and needles in his lower half."How did you escape?""I escaped? No... I..." Mikhail peeked at Arthur's face before the flap of the tent was raised and Juniper walked in eyeing Mikhail as she gave him a belittling gaze."Brother... so this is where he was..." Juniper sighed as she walked over towards Mikhail and kicks him onto his side.Mikhail gave her an astonished gasp before knitting his brows. It was totally uncalled for, for her to act in such a manner when she was the one who requested such an act to be carried out. He was simply carrying out her ord
After their discussion, Xander walks down the corridor with Lilith by his side. Not too far down from the room they just exited, he halts in his steps.Lilith paused as she turned to face him, curious eyes met muddled ones as she opens her mouth to say something but decides against it. She purses her lips, deducing the words she knew he was going to say before swallowing the lump in her throat."The nobles must be feeling rather impatient after this long. They must not be used to waiting, being the top of the social hierarchy... we should head over." Lilith eloquently puts her words into a chain to shackle Xander down, hoping that his Kingly duties would keep him from going back to Diane."... .... You're right. We should make haste..." Xander meets Lilith's gaze as he takes a step forward.Lilith releases the breath she had been holding as she heads over to his side. It wasn't like her to act in such a behaviour. However, upon seeing Diane up close, it w
The hands of the clock on the wall seemed to tick all too loudly as the only sound that accompanied it was the clinking of the teacup as it rested back onto its saucer. The uncomfortable silence and tension in the room made the air overly sufferable for the knights stationed to guard Xander.Lilith takes a sip from her teacup, her expression calm. It made it seem like she was unfazed by such a situation and had been in one countless times before. She glances over at the two people across from her before peeking at Xander from the corner of her eyes.If she had known better, it was obvious he was irritated and his bad mood was much worse than when he had to deal with the pesky nobles. Lilith shut her eyes and takes a deep breath before placing her teacup back onto its saucer as she decided to break the silence."To what do we owe this unfounded invasion?" Lilith directed her question at Diane but before Diane could say anything, the man beside her cut her off.
"Your Highness! I have an urgent report that beseeches your attention!" a messenger rushes before Lilith, lowering his head as he holds forward a scroll to prove of his task."Let me hear it." Lilith swivels around to face the man, turning away from the window as she sits herself down by her desk."There is a foreign enemy consisting of a large troop by our Eastern borders. Reports have claimed that their attire are not known to resemble any of the Agrestians, Trevaulties or Lestrian garments."Lilith straightens herself as she taps her fingers impatiently. She opens the lone jewellery box that rests atop her desk, the only object that didn't match her otherwise packed desk of paperwork. She stares at the innocent stone sitting in the box, void of any colour before shutting the box almost as quickly as she had opened it. She ponders something before shifting her gaze to the messenger who had been furtively glancing at her."I've received the
"... The... Gods?" Arthur glanced at Mikhail with a look of disbelief as Mikhail felt the hesitant smile on his face start to falter.Arthur then burst into laughter as he holds onto his stomach for dear life. Mikhail frowns in response, lowering his disappointed expression to his hands which he suddenly realised were cuffed."What?! You... you chained me up? Why?" Mikhail gasped and shifted his anxious eyes at Arthur who was busy wiping the tears from the corner of his eyes that were a by-product of Mikhail's words."Because of what you said. It could be anyone's guess that you were grasping at straws, begging us to save William. But for you to make a wild guess that we had hidden messengers... it would be implying we don't trust our own men." Arthur tugs on the chain, jerking Mikhail's attention towards him before donning a serious expression."I wasn't grasping at straws. I saw it myself.""That's impossible. We didn't find any communicati
