“This is a very big mistake that has never happened before in our hospital and we’re very sorry,” Dr. Kim pleaded, enunciating each syllable with grim clarity.
Isabelle had arrived the hospital about an hour later she was called. Seating across Dr. Kim, she listened attentively, yet unable to make meaning from her explanations.
“I can still you’re still confused. I’ll explain further,” Dr. Kim said. Isabelle adjusted to the edge of her seat. “The nurse in charge of the insemination mistakenly took the sperm for another client and mix with the sample eggs retrieved from your ovaries.”
“What?!” Isabelle interjected, her voice quaking. The message was now clear. “You mean I’m carrying another man’s child?”
A hushed silence filtered across the room. The ringing sounds of the telephone penetrated the hushed silence. “Right away!” Dr. Kim said with hastiness in her voice as quickly stood up. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Williams, there’s been an emergency. I need leave right away. Could you wait for some minutes, please?” she swung out of the office without waiting for her respond.
For the past 4o minutes, Isabelle buried herself in thoughts, trying to reminisce all the doctor had said. Could it be that I’m carrying another man’s child? Who could that be if that happens to be the case?
“I’m sorry again, Mrs. Williams for keeping you waiting so long,” Dr. Kim said as she just returned from the ICU. “You’re such a patient woman.” She taught of telling Isabelle about the patient but as it was against the hospital’s policy to discuss a patient with a non-family member, she waved off the thought. Isabelle too knew, so she didn’t ask either.
“So, were you saying this child belongs to another man?” Isabelle asked with narrowed brow, cupping her belly with her hand. She was beginning to lose her patience.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, not just another man. The man is Mr. Carlos Fernandez…”
“The world number one real estate mogul,” Isabelle cut in, completing the lines before Dr. Kim could go further. Dr. Kim stared at her with surprise.“I see you already know him,” Dr. Kim said, nodding her head.
“Well, it’s a popular name, always intruding every façade of the media,” Isabelle replied, giving a wink.Isabelle was still worried as her face went pale. “What about my husband’s sperms, what happened to it?”
Dr. Kim gave out a deep breath before answering; she sat up and cleared her throat. “Yes, I was going to talk about that too before you ask. The nurse mistakenly used your husband’s sperms for another sample and discovered that the sperms were not viable enough to initiate fertilization.”“So, what does that mean?” Isabelle asked.
The doctor took few seconds before answering. “It means, the cause of your barrenness is from your husband. Nothing is wrong with you.” “What?” Isabelle almost screamed, her jaw lifted in utter shock. “But he.. Alison is…” pointing blankly towards the door, she immediately held her breath.“Mrs. Williams, are you okay?” Dr. Kim asked. “Who’s Alison?” Dr. Kim noticed from her expression, she didn’t want to talk about it, so she waved it off.
“There is another problem, a bigger one at that,” the doctor said, widening her brow as she spoke. “We’re conflicted on what to tell Mr. Fernandez since the volunteered surrogate was injected with the wrong sample.”
Isabelle began to battle with her own conflict too; the fact that her husband had been the cause of her inability to conceive all these years, the fact that he had to betray their love and ran after her friend who was now claiming to be pregnant for him, the fact that now, she was carrying the child of a stranger – a ruthless one at that.
These were issues her brain was subjected to process at the same time.
“We just wanted to let you know of the true father of the child, that was why we called you over,” the doctor said, her voice stern and unyielding. “For the case of Mr. Fernandez, we fear we might lose our job.”“Why?” Isabelle cut in, her jaws lifted in surprise.
“Yes, this is a grave mistake on our path. Please, keep this conversation absolutely confidential,” she said as Isabelle nodded. “He paid $400,000 for this. He is ruthless and could make sure we don’t just lose our jobs, but that our asses rot in jail for not being able to deliver what he paid for.”
Isabelle could now see the gravity of the whole mess.
And truly, Fernandez was cruel and ruthless. There had been news where cold-heartedly fired over 40 % of his workers for losing just one client. He once fired all his housemaids for skipping his pet’s lunch, and many more to mention. Before Isabelle was called back to the hospital, the doctor had instructed the nurse who made the mistake to let her handle the case.
Dr. Kim was about to speak when a knock at the door interrupted. The visitor did not wait to be invited in as he swung in, evidence of his nature. The doctor jacked on her feet, almost fidgeting upon the sight of the tall, intimidating figure. She signaled Isabelle to stand too.
Who dare to sit down while the great Fernandez was standing? He wore a black tailored suit that perfectly accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence. His piercing eyes in a frame of chiseled jawline scanned the office with an unmistakable intensity.
“So, yo called,” he said with a baritone voice. “What’s the progress?”
“Ye…yes, Mr. Fernandez,” Dr. Kim stammered, “About that, there’s a complication we need to…”
“What complication, woman?” he thundered, losing his patience.Isabelle was meticulously observing the whole drama and knew it wouldn’t end well if didn’t intervene. After all, what would she stand to lose when it was obvious she was carrying his child and back home, her husband had threatened to throw her out.
“Sorry, sir, no complications. I’m the surrogate and I’m carrying your child. My name is Isabelle Williams.” She said with a smile, stretching her hand for a handshake.
The look on Mr. Fernandez’s face was distraught yet satisfying; he was going to be a father after all. But he stared at Isabelle disdainfully as he turned and left the office informing the doctor that his assistant will contact her.“Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?” Dr. Kim asked her gaze on Isabelle with narrowed brow. “This is a big mistake, Mrs. Williams.”“Well, I couldn’t just stand and watch you and every other staff lose their jobs for something I know I can take care of,” Isabelle replied with an assuring tone.Dr. Kim was still boiling in worries knowing that the young lady didn’t understand the grave consequences of her actions – what she was getting at. However, in her expression, she was grateful for her brave intervention.“You really did save our jobs. Thank you, Mrs. Williams, but this is a big risk you're about to take,” Dr. Kim said. “This contract comes with conditions that may not sit well with you. It’s not like the surrogacy you have known of.”This c
Dr. Kim was led to Isabelle’s room by the receptionist as she arrive the hotel where the former was lodged last night. Disbelief and shock swept across her features as she met Isabelle’s gaze.“Oh god!” she exclaimed. “Are you okay? Do you need anything?”Isabelle’s looks clearly showed she needed help. Even though it was morning, her face was pale, dark lines swept beneath the corners of her eyes. “I’m okay, Dr. Kim,” Isabelle said, trying to fake a smile. “Don’t worry about my looks. It’s probably all about last night. I’ll be fine. Meanwhile, I’m divorced. The papers were served last night. So, you can call me Mrs. Bricks from now on.”“Was it because of this?” Dr. Kim asked worryingly.“No, not at all. It’s a long story and I…don’t worry, doctor. I’m fine now.” Isabelle tried to narrate the story of ordeal to Dr. Kim, but in second thought, decided not to. Even after divorce, she was still protective of her ex-husband's image. Dr. Kim wasn’t satisfied with that, but time to atte
Isabelle was already in the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee very early in the morning. The thought of the nightmare stole the remaining iota of sleep from her eyes. Bridget walked in a minute later to make her breakfast.“Good morning ma,” she greeted.“Good morning, Bridget, how are you?” Isabelle responded politely.“I’m fine, ma. What would you like to have for breakfast?”Isabelle, still putting up a smile, thought for a minute before answering. “Tofu Scramble Burrito,” she said, raising the cup of coffee to take a sip. “Let’s go the Mexican way,” she added.Bridget smiled and immediately got to work. After the breakfast, she showed her the way to Fernandez room. It was the next door after hers; the one with the sculpture of the head of a lion above its entrance door. There, Isabelle remembered the line in the contract that read, ‘you must not leave the house unsearched.’ He must’ve chosen the next room for her just to keep an eye on her.“Did you sleep well?” The baritone
Echoes of cheers and side whisperings from the excited guests saturated the hall. Isabelle’s heart raced like whirl wind, beating heavily inside her chest against the walls of its bony cage.It was an in-house party to celebrate one of Carlos’s business breakthroughs. As she stood beside Carlos, beaming with smiles mixed with uneasiness, he wrapped his arms around her waist possessively. The penetrating gazes of the guests with their furrowed eyes in shock pierced into Isabelle’s eyes as the reality of her situation sank in. She was now portrayed as the wife Carlos Fernandez – the ruthless billionaire.”Breathe, Isabelle,” Carlos whispered softly in her ears, his breath warm against her skin. He widened his teeth for a smile; an attitude that was unlike him. “Now, smile like you mean it.”Isabelle forced a smile slightly, subtle lines swept across her cheeks. She tried to maintain a steady composure. She had agreed to this charade in the first place, just that the suddenness seemed t
For a moment, a lingering hushed silence took over Carlos’s study, the tension was becoming palpable as he stared at Isabelle, his dark eyes flickering with mix of anger and something else, unreadable – could it be fear?Isabelle could feel her heart hammering against the walls of her chest as she struggled to find her voice. “I uh… I couldn’t sleep,” she stammered, taking a step back, scared to her bones by the rage in Carlos’s dark eyes. “I was just exploring and the door was open…”Carlos clenched his jaw, his voice took on a grave tone as he asked; “And did your exploration include rifling through my personal belongings too?”Isabelle’s eyes widened as she swallowed hard, noticing that she’d been caught. “I’m so sorry, Carlos, I didn’t mean to intrude your privacy. I just….”“You just what?” Carlos cut her off, not allowing her to complete the sentence, his voice sharp as a knife’s edge. “I see you want to play detective. Do you even have a slightest idea of what you’ve done?”Bef
"There should be something, anything," he murmured, continuously scrolling through financial reports and news articles from recent and past publications. Then his gaze fell on one headline: "Controversial Medical Research in Connection with Fernandez Holdings." His heart was thumbing hard against his chest, as he clicked on the article published about a week ago.The article discussed a series of allegations concerning unethical medical practices and court injunctions pointing to Fernandez Holdings. Though Fernandez Holdings denied having something to do with all that and described them as false information, the journalist hinted at some cover-up or hush money for those events."Bingo," Morris whispered; on his lips, there was a grim smile. He continued reading through the pages and other related articles in search of further information, following a trail of shell companies and offshore accounts that did unsuitably seem to link back to Carlos. The morning sun was already boring out t
The sun had long since set, the rays filtered across the room, as Isabelle slipped out of the Fernandez mansion. Her heart pounded toward each step. She pulled her coat tightly to her body for warmth and also to cover her growing belly. Pressing hard on her mind was the weight of her decision to meet with a woman whom she'd lost trust in.As she reached the venue for the meeting — the dimly lit park on the outskirts of the city that looked like a deserted area, Isabelle's nerves were on edge as the shock of the scary surroundings battled across her features. It seemed like every rustle of leaves made her jump, and every shadow seemed to hide a potential threat she couldn't seem to understand."Isabelle," a voice she knew too well called softly from behind a large oak tree. Allison emerged, her face half-hidden by a hoodie. "I wasn't sure you'd come."Isabelle steeled herself, trying to keep her voice steady, even as her heart was thumbing like it was going to escape its bony cage. "Yo
Isabelle was still frozen in Carlos' study, her heart racing as her eyes locked with his burning ones. The air was charged with tension, anger, and betrayal on his part, and something else — electrifying and undeniable. After the incidence at the park, Carlos had given it a deep thought and released Allison to go, warning her not to come any close to his wife again if she really valued her life."I trusted you," Carlos said in a low voice. "I brought you into my home, my life. And this is how you repay me, huh?" His face was turning red and his eyes darker. Isabelle swallowed, fighting for words. "Carlos, I. I was just curious. I never meant to—""To what?" he cut her off, advancing on her. "To pry into my personal affairs? To betray my trust? What have I not done for you to make your stay under my roof hospitable than I had earlier planned?”As he drew closer, Isabelle found herself backing up until she hit the edge of his desk. Carlos braced his hands on either side of her, trappin
