EMILY’S POV

“I am so sorry that happened to you, sweetheart,” I told Daniella because that was the only thing I could think of to say. The tears were flowing down her face freely now and it broke my heart to watch. I knew exactly what she was going through because I remember the pain and how much it hurt when my father died.

“I don't even know why I'm getting so emotional, maybe it is because I am sad for Anita. She's scared her father won't come back.” Daniella explained.

Her words made my heart drop. It suddenly occurred to me that this could easily be the last time that we would see Dominic if something went wrong. I tried not to show my sadness to Daniella because I knew that she was going through so much pain, she and Anita needed to see me strong.

I pulled her into my arms and wrapped her in a hug to comfort her till she calmed down. Then we pulled away from each other. “I think you should go and join Anita and have some rest. Maybe the three of us can all do something fun l

DOMINIC'S POV The plan had been successful and the goods were intercepted and moved to one of our warehouses in the United States. It took a lot of work and a whole lot of planning, but we were able to get it done. I was just getting down from the SUV when my phone rang with a call from an unknown number.I picked it up immediately, I knew who it was already. “You're playing with fire, Moreno.” Carlos Mendez said with a very heavy Hispanic accent. “No, I'm playing the game that you started,” I told him through gritted teeth. “I am coming for you, and I am going to hit you right where it hurts. We've only just begun.” He threatened before he ended the call. “Who was that?” Victor said as he came and stood beside me. “Carlos Mendez. He called to make threats.” I told him. I turned to look at him and he was smiling. “What's so funny?” “Do you know what that call means?” He asked me and I shook my head in confusion because his tone implied that the call was a good thing. “What d

DOMINIC'S POV Hearing Emily’s voice made me feel better and had a calming effect, but it also made me worried. I felt like I was putting her in a position that she deserved better than to be in. “I trust you.” She said softly and it made my chest tighten. I could not afford to let her down. Her faith in me was a comfort and a burden at the same time. “I'll call you when I get the chance. Try not to worry so much.” “I'll try. Be careful, okay?” “I will. I love you.” “I love you.” She said softly. There was a brief moment of silence between us, almost as though we were enjoying each other’s presence through the phone. Then she ended the call. There was a time in my life when I did not think that it was possible for me to love any woman this much. After Anita's mother, the pain of loss had been too much and I never wanted to experience it again. Women had become nothing more than a way to please me, but even that had lost its flavour before Emily came into my life. The first time

EMILY’S POV It had been two weeks since Dominic had been away and we had only spoken on the phone three times. It was hard not to miss him, but I knew that I had to be patient. It wasn't so hard anymore. I spent a lot of time talking to Sophia and distracting myself with activities with Anita and Daniella. Anita was back to herself after a couple of days of not talking to anybody and staying in her room the whole day. I was worried that she would be like that until Dominic returned, but I was glad she found herself again. However, on some days,, I would catch her zoning out, and I knew she was getting worried about her father again. I wasn't the only one who noticed because Sofia asked me about it one time. “I don't think she is as fine as she pretends to be,” Sofia said as we watched Anita and Daniella talking together. “I don't think she is too, but she's trying her best,” I told her. “How old is she?” Sofia asked. “She's thirteen.” “This whole thing is a huge burden for a yo

DOMINIC'S POVEverything had been going as planned, we had not heard from the Cartel in two weeks, but that was no reason to relax. It was obvious that they were planning their next move, and we had to be careful. We were on our way back from a meeting with one of our informants when the ambush happened. It was unexpected and we were not prepared for it. It was quick, precise and brutal—you would expect nothing less from Carlos Mendez. The first explosion caused our convoy to go into chaos, one of the SUVs in front of mine flipped over in a fiery wreck. Loud shots began to ring out immediately. “Get down!” Victor ordered loudly as he pulled out his gun and began to fire out the window. I was about to pull out my gun and begin shooting when the second blast rocked the ground under us. Our SUV was thrown to the side. The air was filled with smoke. The heavy stench of burning rubber and blood filled my nose. Pain shot through my body as I hit the glass. My vision began to blur but I f

DOMINIC'S POV I opened my eyes slowly and immediately regretted it when bright sunlight attacked my vision, causing a sharp pain to shoot through my head. “Fuck.” I cursed under my breath weakly. I looked around at my surroundings. I was in the one place I swore I would never be caught dead in—the hospital. The moment I was allowed to get out of this place, I will find Carlos and make sure he pays for this. I made an attempt to sit up, but the incredible pain from my side stopped me. “Oh, good, you're awake.” A nurse walked into the room, a small smile on her face, but I could tell that she was anxious. I liked the fact that she knew that just because I was in a vulnerable position didn't mean that I was to be fucked with. “How long have I been out?” I asked her. “About two days. After we took the bullet out of you and stopped the bleeding, we put you to rest.” She explained. “How long do I have to be here?” I asked through gritted teeth. “I am not sure. DOMINIC’S POV Emily’s words hurt more than any bullet ever could. I looked around her as I tried to process what she had just said to me. She was actually asking me to choose between losing her and losing the only life that I've known all my life. “You don't mean that?” My voice was filled with emotions, almost pleading, but when I looked into her eyes, I knew that she meant every word that she had said. “I love you, Dominic. I really do, but I cannot love like this. This…this constant worrying.” Her voice was low and I could hear the hurt in her voice. I tried to sit up, but I was in so much pain, and my head still hurt. “Don't try to stand up. I'm sorry I brought this up, this was the wrong time.” She said, looking guilty now. “There would have never been a right time to bring something like this up,” I said, frustration coursed through me, but I tried my best to control it. “You knew what you were getting into. You knew this was how my world operated. Do you really think I co

EMILY’S POV When I got back to Ireland, it was already almost midnight. Dominic allowed me to stay one more day before I had to leave again. I was still worried about him, but I knew that staying there would not change his mind, I had to give him space. As I walked into our bedroom, I remembered our conversation. Surely, he had to see the sense in what I was saying. I knew he knew that I was right, he was just too stubborn to acknowledge it. I think it was because he was afraid of what life outside of the Mafia would mean for him—I was not heartless; I understood that it would be hard for him. But living like this was too much, I wasn't sure I could handle it. Always being afraid that the next call I would get from Victor or Barry and Ezra was to tell me that he was dead. When Lorenzo told me what Barry had called to tell him, I was shaking all over. I didn't calm down, not even after Lorenzo told me that he was okay and he was in a stable condition. DOMINIC'S POV Being in bed and not being able to help out with anything, except during meetings was driving me crazy. I was stuck in a wheelchair and I would be more of a liability than anything during missions. It even annoyed me more because it gave me too much time to think, and lately, the most predominant thing on my mind was my conversation with Emily before she left. The ultimatum she gave me weighed heavily on my mind. I was born into this life. I did not know what the world outside of it held for me. Asking me to leave this life was like asking me to take my own life, it seemed impossible to me. But at the same time, I did not want to lose Emily. She and my daughter were the most important thing to me and I did not want to lose her. Everything she said was true, it was selfish of me to subject her to this life, but I could not lose her. No, this wasn't a decision I could make. Emily was asking too much of me. The life outside of the Mafia would not be kind to me. I wasn't

DOMINIC'S POVI looked at my phone like it was about to explode after Victor left. "Call her". His words kept ringing over and over again in my head. The way he looked at me, I knew he meant it. It had been almost a week since I last heard her voice. I made the painful decision of putting a wedge between us even though I knew it was totally wrong to do so—even though I knew that it would hurt her. I wanted to protect her from myself. I meant what I said to Victor. I didn't know how to be there for her in her grief while dealing with mine and also trying to get the girls back. Now I knew I had to call her, but I was scared that I'd hurt her so much that she wouldn't be mine. I was scared that I'd messed everything up with the distance to the point that she would never forgive me. I was scared of what she'd say, how she'd react. But the truth was that I missed her—I missed her terribly. Her voice, her laughter, her comforting touch. The way she made me feel like I wasn't the monster

EMILY’S POV Waiting was gruesome. It had been two days and I had not heard a word from any of them. Not even from Victor. I was constantly nervous, not getting enough sleep because I could not sleep, and when I did, I got nightmares. Victoria had not left the house since and it was nice to have someone around. We talked and we got to know each other better. It helped us to keep our minds off everything. I was grateful for her; she was the only thing keeping me a bit sane. I tried not to think about Dominic so much, cause thinking about him made me sad. No matter how much I tried to understand, I could not help the feeling of hurt that came as a result of his abandonment. We'd always gone through everything together, so why did it have to be different now? I missed him, but I was angry with him. After I called him two days back and he didn't respond, I promised myself not to try to contact him again. If he wanted to be away from me, then so be it. I would not beg him anymore. If

  • The Undercover Bride (Mafia Escapade)    Chapter 195

DOMINIC'S POV The warehouse looked like a haunted house. It was an old abandoned building. It was filled with silence and darkness except for the flickering security lights. My fingers clenched as I looked at the building that held the possibility that my daughter was in there. We were parked a safe distance from the location. This was not an attack, it was a stakeout, but everything in my body screamed for a shootout, but not with the girls in there. Lorenzo slid into the backseat. “I did another scan on the property and found that there was movement in the building. There are a few people on there, probably a way to reduce activity and take attention away from the building.” I was about to respond when my phone began to buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out to see who was calling. Emily. I allowed the phone to finish ringing before putting it back in my pocket. I looked up to find Victor shaking his head at me in disappointment. My heart sank. I knew it wasn't fair for me to kee

DOMINIC'S POV Victor pulled me aside after I was done talking to everybody with a serious expression on his face. “You need to talk to Emily.” He said simply. I let out a shaky breath as I ran my fingers through my hair. “I can't talk to her right now, Victor. She's counting on me for something that I can't give her right now and that I'd comfort. I'm a mess. My daughter is in the hands of my enemy and all I can think about is that I need to save her so I don't lose her.” “She's not asking you for comfort, Dominic. She just wants you to know that you are both in this together. If anything, she wants to comfort you. You can't let this whole thing tear you apart, that's how Damien will win.” I didn't respond. I knew he was right, but right now I could not give her what she was asking. I needed to handle this on my own. It was better she stayed away from the entire case. I could not handle emotions right now, it was for the best. I was about to respond when Lorenzo rushed bac

SOFIA'S POV I woke up covered in sweat, my wrist hurt from where they were bound. My mouth hurt from the gag and every single inch of my body hurt. The room was dark and damp and the smell of blood hung in the air. My head throbbed from when they'd delivered a blow to my head when I had tried to resist them. I had no idea how long I'd been out, but judging by how much my body hurt and the dried-up blood on Anita's head, I knew it had been a while. Anita was beside me; she was not moving, but I could hear her shallow breathing—thank God. Daniella was on my other side, she was bruised and very weak, but she still had a look of determination that I envied. I was just glad that we were all alive… for now. Slow and deliberate footsteps approached the space where we were kept. I winced as the door cracked open, casting light into the dark room. A man walked into the room. I gasped. He looked just like Dominic, just a bit older. He was put together, wore an expensive suit and everythi

  • The Undercover Bride (Mafia Escapade)    Chapter 192

EMILY’S POV I felt like I could not breathe as I paced up and down the length of my room. Dominic had left hours ago without so much as a word to me. I had not heard anything from them about the situation over there. I tried to call Dominic but he wasn't answering. I hated not knowing, I hated that this was happening. We'd don't everything to make sure that Damien did not find out about where they were. Everything to protect their location, but nothing has worked. Damien had still been able to get his hands on them. I imagined Anita and Daniella, terrified and Sofia too. It was ironic that the last time this had happened, it was Sofia's father who had taken them. Finally, unable to take the lack of information anymore, I called Victor. He answered immediately and I was relieved, but it also meant that Dominic was deliberately avoiding talking to me, which made me feel alone. “Emily?” “Hey, Victor. How are things over there?” There was a pause at the end of the line before

  • The Undercover Bride (Mafia Escapade)    Chapter 191

DOMINIC'S POV We got to Sydney at dawn. The air was thick with heat and tension as we drove through the street to my estate. When we got there, the place looked normal from the outside. I felt like I'd not been there in forever. The gate was still intact, so I knew that they didn't force themselves into the property. The cameras in front of the gate were still blinking rapidly. They had not been tampered with. All five of us—myself, Dino, Victor, Barry, and Ezra—walked into the house to inspect it. Lorenzo greeted us at the entrance, and he could not look me in the eye. That was good. I left him in charge, trusted him to take care of the girls, and he'd disappointed me. Even though I knew it wasn't really his fault. Damien and his men had bested him, but I needed someone to blame. “Walk us through what happened,” Victor told Lorenzo as we walked through the house. I'd asked that nothing be touched or cleaned until I came. I wanted to see everything for myself. “They came in s

EMILY’S POV “How did that even happen? The house is supposed to be very secure, and how did he even find out where they were?” The questions rushed out of me before I could stop them. The tears were flowing freely from my eyes, and I felt shattered. I'd spoken to Anita only some hours ago, and she sounded okay. She told me everything was fine. How could that have changed in only a short period? “I know as much as you do, Emily. I'm waiting for feedback from Lorenzo. I might have to make the trip down there.” Dominic said, sitting in the corner. Beside him were Victor, Barry, and Ezra, who were trying to console the both of us. “I'm going with you,” I told him. “You are not going with me.” He said quietly, shaking his head. “But—” I started to say, but he cut me off. “My decision has been made, and that is final. I am leaving before noon today, and you will stay here. I can't risk anything happening to you either.” He told me strongly. His tone left no room for argument, bu

  • The Undercover Bride (Mafia Escapade)    Chapter 189

DOMINIC'S POV The silence in the room was very heavy. The only sound in the room was of Emily clicking away on the laptop. She was so engrossed in the work, in trying to find anything that would help us take Crowley and Damien back. She spent the whole day on the encrypted server. “I can't really find anything more on him,” Emily said frustration filling her voice. I put my hand over hers and soothed my thumb over it. “Don't be too hard on yourself. Just take a break, and we can continue later. It's already getting dark. I think we should take a shower and sleep.” I told her. With a resolved sigh, she nodded her head, and I helped her up with my good arm. The pain from my injury was still very bad, but Emily disinfected it every night and dressed it. It was beginning to heal, but not as fast, and I could like it. Damien could strike at any time, and I needed to be ready. I could not do that with an injured shoulder. I hoped they would hold up any future attacks until I was
