Valencia headed to her home, a cozy little den just near the edge of the Sricgis forest. She loved being alone in her house when she wasn't busy performing her job as the Archon Alpha. She was the alpha of all the alphas in Sricgis empire that spanned the entirety of the forest and a major chunk of the nearby human city of Grawd.
She disliked humans, petty little things who had no fangs, no claws to protect themselves yet who would come charging in her lands occasionally to hunt animals with their sick weapons for the fun of it. One of such hunts had snatched away everything from her when she had been young.
Her werewolf parents had been killed by the humans and she had been left to defend herself on her own. She had had two choices- to cry her eyes out and wait for someone to help her or to make herself strong enough that she would never need anyone. Obviously, she had chosen the latter.
She had been a rogue but had asserted her dominance by killing all the alphas and naming betas, and even gammas as the next alphas of the five major werewolf packs in Sricgis. Anybody who had challenged her authority had met a gruesome death giving her the status of the Archon Alpha.
Her own pack, the blood moon, consisted of six loyal members- a beta, a gamma and four omegas. Though, she considered them more of a family. The number of werewolves was dwindling as it had been a hundred years since anybody had had children. Her cousin and Beta, Gerald was the proud father of the three werewolf cubs-Sarah, Elvin and Tom. That had made the total number of members reach nine. Gerald had found and married his mate, Olivia last year.Valencia had asked him to form a new pack if he wished but Gerald had politely declined. He hadn’t wanted to look after the kids alone and he knew Valencia could protect his family like no other. Valencia, on the other hand, had no intention of finding out who her mate was, she had found the concept of mate ridiculous. She couldn't imagine herself tied to one person for eternity. Or to several.
She loved being the sovereign queen of her life and Sricgis.
She lay immersed in her hot tub with the thoughts whirling through her head as her phone buzzed. She knew who it must be even without having to open her eyes. Only one person would have the guts to call her late at night. She hit the accept button and put the phone to her ears, "Yes?"The voice of Dominic drawled, "You could have at least let me ask your hand before you said yes. Not that I mind, Valencia Raskin."Valencia rolled her eyes, "It's Archon Alpha."Dominic chuckled, "Certainly, your majesty."Valencia got straight to the point, "To what do I owe the pleasure of your call, Dominic?"Dominic laughed, "You know why. I want you to be present at the conclave next week."Valencia drew an exasperated breath, "I'll doze to sleep if I have to listen to the stupid alpha speeches of secrecy and security one more time."Dominic's voice grew edgy, "Well, that's what I want you for."Valencia noticed the change in his voice, "Spit it out, Dom"Dominic couldn’t hide amusement from his voice at the way she said Dom instead of Dominic. "Well, I believe, some werewolves aren't keeping us secured anymore."That caught her attention. "What do you mean?"Dominic lowered his voice, "I can't tell you everything over the phone. Can we meet at the usual place in an hour?"Valencia spoke, "Make it two" before disconnecting the call. If she had to hear more politics and gossip she needed to spend a damn extra hour immersed in the bathtub to keep herself from screaming at him when they met.
Two hours later, she found herself standing in front of a rusty-looking diner called 'The old place.' It was a dodgy werewolf hideout but Dominic had wanted to make this meeting as secret as possible. The owner of the place was a short bearded man who ate nearly all of the food that could have earned him more money. He sat by the bar on a wooden stool, cleaning the glasses with a cloth. At least, his nails were clean today. He bowed at Valencia and greeted her, "Madam Valencia, why are you outside again?"
She muttered under her breath, "It's Archon Alpha Valencia.”Rugor’s brow furrowed as he tried to concentrate, “Rugor had walked you inside five minutes ago.”
Valencia asked with her artificial smile, “Are you drunk?”
His smile dropped a bit as he attempted to smooth his hair with his fingers. He stuttered, “Not today Argon”. Valencia gave up correcting him and asked instead, "Have you bathed today, Rugor?"
He was delighted for being congratulated on being clean. "Yes, and Rugor cut nails too. See" He waved his hands in front of her to verify, an opportunity she gladly skipped away. He continued with renewed enthusiasm, "Alpha Dominic Castro asked me to accompany you to the table."
Valencia replied, "Well, he should have been inside, setting up the table himself" as she walked inside.Rugor took her to a far table nestled under the branches of a tree. A handsome looking man turned around and greeted her, "It's an honor to have your acquaintance, my lady."
His eyes moved from her feet to her eyes, taking in her appearance- ripped jeans, a tank top, and messy hair. She hadn't bothered to look in the mirror before stepping out. "You look beautiful, as always."Valencia looked at him standing in his immaculate dark blue three piece suit with cufflinks and black shoes. "Blue suits you", she offered. She wasn't going to admit that he looked smoking-hot in his well-toned body, perfectly set black hair, and emerald eyes that could make any girl go weak in the knees. Any girl- but not her.
He offered her a hand and pulled out a chair to help her settle in. He was charming in his mannerisms. "Is this a date?"Dominic smiled mischievously, "It can be if you want."Valencia smiled as she looked around, "I must appreciate your effort though I must say it’s wasted on me."He settled down in a chair opposite her, "Nothing's wasted on you, ever. I haven't found my mate yet, either." He stressed on ‘either’ longer than necessary. They were two alphas who hadn't found their mates even though both of them were centuries old. It was a common assumption that the two would eventually accept each other. Dominic had tried to reason with her a million times but she wouldn't budge."The conclave, Dominic.' Valencia prompted him to speak before he would make her sick of all the flirting.
Dominic rubbed his neck with his left hand as his biceps threatened to rip his suit apart. "Well, I don't know where to start.""How about you educate me on the purpose of sending hycwens after my family?"Dominic had been pouring drinks in the glasses when the glass slipped from his hand. He grabbed tissues and attempted to keep the drink from damaging his pristine white shirt but the damage was done. He asked her, "Are you accusing me of trying to kill your pack?" as if one might ask how they found the weather to be.Valencia leaned forward, "I am only stating the obvious. Hycwen population is the highest near your territory and they rarely cross it."Dominic said resolutely, "I may be many things Val, but I will be the last person to hurt the ones you love."Valencia had meant to reprimand him for calling her Val but she saw the softness in his eyes and decided to let it go. She was the alpha of the alphas, but Dominic always made her feel or
Valencia laid in a cozy king-size bed sprawled across many layers of silken cushions and comforters. She had spent a lot of time tossing and turning in the bed and was tangled in the sheets. She pushed the curtains away and a small light of ray entered the room through the window just above her head. It was well past mid-day and she had been asleep for more than 24 hours. She groggily got up, her head in her hands, and groaned. It hurt to open her eyes but she glanced across the lavish room surrounded by exquisite furniture. A huge wardrobe was lined across a wall and a dressing table stood at the opposite wall. A coffee table with a lavish settee stood in the other corner. Soft yellow lights glowed in the wall brackets and a huge chandelier hung in the center of the ceiling. She didn’t have to guess where she was. She screamed, “Dominic!!”A
Dominic walked away from Valencia and settled on the settee. "So, let me get this straight. Your cousin gives birth to three cubs, your pack is attacked thrice in a span of fifteen days and you somehow lost control of your inner wolf."Valencia struggled to admit, "It was horrible...it was as if every nerve in my body wanted to kill Tom. I would have done it, had you not interfered."There was a soft knock on the door and a young boy appeared, "Is the Archon Alpha back to normal?"Dom turned around, "Yes, Freyge. You may come in."Freyge was the healer werewolf, an omega of the pack who tended to the werewolf’s health.
“What?”Dominic and Valencia asked in unison. It wasn’t that they hadn’t heard him, their ears were sensitive and would have picked up even the slightest whisper. They were just giving Freyge time to go back and change his sentence. The poor omega cowered under the gazes of two alphas and his hands shivered a little. He had already been lifted up and his feet had been dangling in the air not just minutes before. Freyge could still feel the grip of the archon alpha around his neck, her fingers digging in his skin.Subconsciously, he rubbed his neck with one hand while he tried to maintain the grip on the large tattered book that he had been holding because almost his hands had turning sweaty. In a trembling voice, he raised the book with a certain page open and showed it to both of them.“I request…please read through it.”Freyge said in a pleading voice and bent his head, his eyes anywhere but on th
Dominic wasn't pleased as was evident from the way he began tapping the floor with his feet. His shoes clicking softly against the floor in rhythmic flow..tap..tap..tap. "This is dangerous. I don't think you should attend the conclave." Veronica's head was beginning to hurt and that was not because of some stupid mage or ghost trying to get to her. The cause of her headache stood before her- a cold smile plastered on a handsome face- the kind of handsome that got to her bones- that and a wildly beating heart. Valencia blurted, "Why, so that you don't lose the one potential mate, that you don't actually have?" Dominic's eyes stared at her in shock. He opened his mouth to bark an angry retort. But, he instead replied in a steely voice, "Oh, now I am the villain here?" Valencia's temper was flaring and there wasn't anybody else near her to face the heat. More often than not, Dominic was on the receiving side. Tonight, it seemed no different. He s
Olivia sat on the couch of their small cozy home nestled amongst the dense shrubbery. She had recently given birth to three beautiful children who were her heart and life. She preferred to call them kids instead of cubs…they weren't untamed beasts but cute little souls who filled every corner of a room with light. She had been ecstatic about meeting her mate but nothing had matched the warmth that filled her whenever her children called her 'Mom' she had belonged to a smaller pack, one that lived away from the mainstream werewolves and preferred a quiet life. They had been a handful of werewolves who worked in the human city by the day and returned to Sricgis by the night. The pack didn't allow socializing with humans so she was left alone after her day job. She was also relatively shy to meet and explore werewolves from the other packs as she had been told the other packs weren't as civilized as hers. She had been hunting one night when a gro
The crickets chirped and the insects sang a chorus that filled the forest with a noise so loud that Valencia had an urge to burn the trees down. She wanted some peace for the moment. She and Gerald had returned from Dominic's place and he had rushed straight to his hideout. She hadn't had time to apologize for her behavior. She kept recalling the look of terror in Tom's eyes and scolded herself. To add more to her guilt, her head couldn't stop replaying her conversation with Dominic. The way he had asked her to be his 'mate'... it was almost...weird?What was it? Why was he acting so strange nowadays? She shuddered at the thought of being someone’s mate. The idea itself seemed absurd to her. Dominic was an excellent person who she was sure would prove to be an ideal mate and husband, but she wasn’t ready to go down that path so soon. After all, she had forever to live. For now, she was content living on her terms. To her, belonging to someone
It was almost dawn yet Valencia was still at her office in the headquarters. She had despised humans for thinking of any creature other than them as inferior but liked how they kept their personal and workspaces different. Thus, she kept her personal space and workspace poles apart. She had pinned the map on the wall and pulled a large desk in front of her. She had been sitting on the desk, her legs dangling at the edges. Her eyes were drooping and she stifled a yawn. Coffee cups littered the floor as did several crumpled papers. She was going in circles, she had everything in front of her yet she had no clue of where to look for the attacker. Her phone beeped at a text message from Dominic. Need to discuss the conclave meeting. Can we meet? Perfect. She could talk to him about ways to find something about the attacks. She knew her territory of Sricgis quite well but she hated visiting the human city, Grawd. Dominic, however, was a regular visitor and h
Valencia let out a growl on hearing that. “How could you, Trecdor? She is a little girl…all these days…I have been living with the guilt of scaring her and it was you all along?” Trecdor spat at her words in disgust, “Trecdor? Do you dare call me by my name? Where is your respect for the Coven's head?” Valencia meanwhile kept glaring at him, “You lost it when you sent an untrained, tainted werewolf after my niece, you don’t have the right to that seat after what you have been doing to the humans…” Dominic tried to mind link her, “Keep him busy talking, I’ll try to untie the knots holding me to this filthy pillar.” She was startled to hear his voice in her head all of a sudden but Trecdor only took it as the reaction to his betrayal. To goad her further, he added, What use is she to me? Well, if she grows up and is capable of birthing a wolf then she may be of some use…if not, she is a burden on our community…like yo
After ensuring that the car was safely hidden out of view, both of them stepped out of it and peered through the gate.Luckily nobody had come running towards the gate when it had creaked loudly. So they believed that it could either mean that whoever was in charge didn’t think that anybody would show up or if they did then they wouldn’t walk out alive. After ensuring that nobody was around using their acute sense of hearing and smell, the two slowly edged inside. There was a lot of abandoned stuff littering around the open space so it proved to be effective in hiding. Thus, they used the empty drums and stuff lying around to hide them while carefully walking inside. The two werewolves kept inching towards the entrance that they hoped would be heavily guarded or at least tripped with wires. But to their surprise, again nothing obstructed their way. It was strange and both of them merely glanced at each other before walking
Running towards him, she turned him around and before he could react, she pulled him by the collar and placed her lips on his. Daniel had not expected her to have such a reaction and he was startled for a moment but soon he gave in to the feeling. He was afraid that she would shun him and was only around him for old time’s sake. The fact that she took the initiative to kiss him dispensed all the worries from his head. His arms went around her and he lifted him from the ground while kissing her back. Jenny smiled and a chuckle escaped her lips to feel him be so elated. His eyes were shining with joy and she could also see a tear or two though he was trying hard to not show it. “I love you” The words escaped his lips automatically and Jenny’s eyes mirrored his emotions. “I have always loved you, Danny,” Jenny replied and the two smiled again. “Now, put me down…” Daniel who was lost in the sensation of
As she kept thinking about this stuff, her feet automatically carried her to the headquarters. She walked inside the headquarters, climbed the stairs, and got to the upper floor where Daniel was sitting on the chair. He looked weak but not as exhausted as before. The guards stationed outside the room bowed their heads at her. “Has he eaten something?” One of the werewolves who were standing away from her bowed his head and answered, “Yes archon, we gave him food and he finished that reluctantly. In fact, he has been asking to meet you. But, we didn’t inform you because we thought it was too early.” She nodded her head in acknowledgment and went inside. Daniel was in a fresh set of clothes, probably Gerald had given her a new set. He even looked to have bathed and not as harrowed as the night before. Daniel had a notebook and a pen in front of him and appeared to be scribbling something. Seeing her enter the room, he got up from his seat and bo
The voice pained him and the icy tone with which she said that to him made him feel like he was punched in the gut. “Why are you doing this?” He asked in an anguished voice. She was still pinned to the bed and his hands were still holding hers. He tightened his hold on her and bent down again to say, “You don’t really mean that, you are saying that to get back at me.” Valencia kept looking at him with the same steady gaze, her eyes didn’t even falter for a second. She was proud of not giving away the roller coaster of emotions coursing through her. “If you think so…” Calhoun’s eyes grew darker and she hoped that he would get away from her the minute he realized that she wasn’t joking. However, he did just the opposite. Instead of getting away from her, he bent down and gave her the steamiest kiss ever. In one swift motion, he put his hands around her, pulled her in a tight embrace, and began eating her lips, devouring her
“Well let’s say fate decided to meddle with her life. She got separated from her parents and had to live on her own….but….she was a strong girl. As such, she decided to not let destiny decide the course of her life, thus she fought against all odds and became a queen from an orphan.” She gave a dry chuckle at that, “you make it look so effortless...” He responded, “I know it isn’t, but I didn’t want to go into the details of the pain and suffering of the girl, she has had her fill.” Valencia closed her eyes and replied, “Hmm…so, where is she now?” Calhoun looked at her face that was shining with innocence and pain. He wanted to kiss her so bad but didn’t want to take advantage of the situation. Thus, he answered, “She is ruling her kingdom all by herself.” “Oh, she doesn’t have a king?” “She could but she doesn’t need anyone I think.” “Well, everybody needs someone at one point or the other…” The words had tumbl
The word made her momentarily forget what she had been about to say. Nobody had called her queen before. Blinking her eyes she said while fumbling, “Yes…I am..” Though her heart had skipped a beat at that, she continued to look at him with defiance. Calhoun closed the distance between them and stood extremely close to her, their faces inches away from each other. “What wouldn’t have happened if I had stayed away?” He asked her again, slowly and steadily and she realized that he had understood that she had not implied the incident with the blue werewolf. A small part of her heart was amazed to see how he had clearly understood her but the other was still fluttering at the way he had called her queen. It felt oddly nice to hear him call her a queen. Scolding herself, she tried to get a grip on herself as even her wolf seemed to be confused now. Earlier, she had loved Dominic but now feeling what Valencia was feeling made her unsu
Dominic muttered and turned into his wolf. Valencia got up from the ground as the rogue motioned ahead and raised his hand to smack her again. But before he could do this, Dominic jumped on him, sinking his teeth into the werewolf’s arm. In normal circumstances, it would have sliced off the hand as an alpha’s bite was extremely powerful but no such thing happened now. The blue werewolf was more powerful than the alpha but it seemed to lose its mind from time to time. It was as if periodically it was being remote controlled by someone else and just moments of self control were granted to it before it was taken over by that other mysterious controller again. Dominic looked at his beta who got the message and quickly as his pack members to ensure that a stampede doesn’t occur and that everybody is taken to a safe place while they dealt with this rogue. Gerald and Patrick began guiding the frightened crowd, taking them away from the battle
“I kept telling myself that it will be okay, that I could always walk away and return the money if I didn’t like what was going on…” Daniel trailed off and his eyes automatically went to Jenny whose face was almost on the verge of crying. She couldn’t keep it together anymore. His face crumpled to see her like that and Dominic patted her head and pulled her in a hug to calm her down. Daniel felt relieved to see that neither of the alphas was hurting her even when they knew that she was their leverage against them. Gerald walked up to him and offered him a glass of water when the rogue moved his hands to his throat and touched the Adam’s apple. After emptying the water glass, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and continued, “I was taken in and asked to do some mandatory health check-ups that they assured me and the batch of people who had signed up with them…we were taken in a lab of sorts and asked to sleep on a table to take some scan…I do
