A tingling sensation began to spread through River’s body and was soon followed by a low hum that reverberated from deep within the safe.
The carved symbols thumped with blue light, and then, with a click, the safe door swung open.It worked!Relief washed over River as jubilant laughter escaped her lips regardless of all the shits going on around her now. Her mother's letter was wrapped in a leather pouch. It lay nuzzled on a silver linen in the safe. She sighed happily, picking it up. “Here you are.”But the sound of approaching footsteps ruined the moment for her.“Argh. What do they want?!” She hollered to herself with gritted teeth.Glancing at the door, she saw shadows stretching across the floor. Time was running out.“Shit!”She hastily grabbed the pouch and slammed the safe shut. It didn't matter if Echo and Gonzalo were coming for her for God knows why.She had what she came for.Turning on her heel, she sprinted towards the window with her heart pounding in her chest. Just as she reached it, the door burst open, revealing Echo and Gonzalo standing in the doorway."River! Where are you going?" Echo exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air.Look at her acting as though she were a mother looking out for her kid. Imagine a mother who snatched her daughter’s dream man from her.Had Echo no shame?"It's not your concern," River snapped back, tears welling up in her eyes once again. "Don't you come to act the mother role, Echo. You're my sister, and if you must know, I River Sassalos am no longer a sister of yours. And where I am going to? Somewhere far away from you and your lies!”Gonzalo stepped forward with a frown on his face. "This is absurd, River. You can't just leave. Don't you know what lurks in the night? Rogues, even vampires. They prey on lone and weak wolves like yourselves. It won't do…”What the hell?He had the guts to throw her insecurities in her face like they weren't already hurting her self-esteem already. Gosh, she couldn't believe she had waited all her for this rotten man!Yet, seeing how subtly his lips parted as he said those words to her did something to her insides. It made her want to…Hold up. What the hell was she thinking about right now? Argh. Get a grip, River."I don't need your advice, Gonzalo," She turned to him and retorted, her anger flaring her nostrils. "I can take care of myself. Go to hell!”Echo tried another approach. "Ry, please. It's useless to run. If you try, my men will find you and bring you back."Huh? Now, she was trying to threaten her, wasn't she? How could she have missed this cold, heartless, and unremorseful side of Echo all of her life? She’d be damned before she wasted any more of her time in the presence of these two worthless Alphas."My name’s River, you bitch. And oh, catch me if you can," River growled at her sister before flinging open the window with a crash. The cool night air whipped against her face, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth crashing on her. It was a familiar fragrance that now represented freedom to River. She had always thought being in the four walls of this house was freedom. Freedom from all the judgments and humiliations she faced at the hands of the pack members.Guess none was different.Without another word, she leaped out, landing on the ground below with a grunt. She fell on her elbow which sent a jab of short pain within her.“River!” She could hear Echo screaming at her but she gave no damn. For a moment, she stood there was wondering, pondering, and strategizing on where to turn to next. Realization just dawned on her that she really was nothing without the protections and four arms of Echo.It was why the betrayal stung even harder. Yet, it was why she sought this change even hungrier. She needed away from all of this. She wouldn't be a helpless omega anymore. She would carve her own path, a path where she was valued, not judged. She made her way into the wilderness where the pack’s borders lay...Now, in the forest, the damp ground crunched with every step River took forward, branches and leaves getting in her way here and there.Things had been going well for her before a sharp prick sent a jolt of pain through her finger.“Damn it!” She cursed under her breath, glancing down at the tiny red gash left by a hidden thorn that she hadn't noticed and had gotten pricked by.Instinct urged her to lick the wound. It was a childhood habit that brought another wave of nostalgia through her.One thing was sure, she’d have a hard time forgetting about Echo as it’d be to forget about Gonzalo too.But before she could lick off her wound, a sharp crack from behind her froze her movement. Her head snapped around, eyes scanning the shady undergrowth.More cracks followed, closer this time, accompanied by the rustle of leaves. Panic gripped her throat as a cold sweat broke out on her skin. She wasn't alone!“Oh, no. Oh, no.” She muttered to herself, petrified.Echo and Gonzalo would only laugh at her should she die in the hands of rogues in this wilderness tonight. She owed it to herself to survive.Weaponless and vulnerable, she cursed her naivety. The years spent within the protective walls of the pack had left her unprepared for the wilderness. With a hopeful glance around, she spotted a large, hollowed-out log that was half-hidden under a curtain of ferns.“I’ll just hide and wait whatever it is out.” She whispered to herself and scrambled towards it.She squeezed inside, trying so hard not to groan out for if any of what she heard turned out to be vampires or rogue wolves, they’d pick up on the sound as easy as it was to blink. The damp wood pressed uncomfortably against her skin as she wriggled into it. Once there, she heaved a sigh of relief and waited patiently inside.Moments later, two figures emerged from the trees. River gulped. Here goes nothing…The figures definitely weren't animals as their laughter echoed through the clearing. Moonlight glinted off their muscular torsos, their chests bare and exposed.Eughh. Why were they shirtless? River squinted her face in disgust. Men without shirts only reminded her of Gonzalo.Right now, one thing she was sure of was that those figures she had just seen belonged to Rogue wolves. In a nutshell, it meant she was deeply into shit. However, she’d be safe if she waited them out. So, she watched them head straight for the spot she'd just vacated.“Oh, please, no.” She groaned to herself. “That is the only path out of here.”Muttering a curse under her breath, she cursed her ill luck. Not now, not when she needed this path. These rogues were scavengers and driven by base instincts. A lone girl, especially one as vulnerable as she was wouldn't stand a chance against them.Yet, should they spot her, she’d have no choice but to defend herself from them. She wasn't done thinking about that when another sound came from behind her. This one sounded clear and loud. It sounded like Echo’s men searching for her as she had promised.“Where is she?”“I can catch her scent around here.”“This way!”This time, River wasn't the only one at alert on hearing the sounds. The rogue wolves on her path also snapped into attention, bracing themselves for whatever was coming through.Oh, gosh, River shut her eyes in frustration. She didn't ask for this. She only wanted to escape to the human world in peace. When Echo’s men arrived, a battle sure would transpire between them and the rogue wolves for sure.River squeezed her eyes shut as panic kicked straight into her. Perhaps, if she lay low, these two groups would fight, kill, or harm each other, and she’d have the chance to escape. It was like seeing her two enemies fight one another, doing all the work for her. Hence, she held her breath, straining to hear the approaching footsteps. The sounds of approaching footsteps grew louder, torturing River with it. Any moment now, Echo's men would burst into the clearing, and the inevitable clash with the rogue wolves would begin. But was she totally safe from it?Caught between a rock and a hard place, she realized escape wasn't the only worry. Being caught in the crossfire was just as likely. As predicted, two figures emerged from the trees, dressed in the Ironclaw Pack’s warrior uniforms. A growl erupted from one of Echo’s men who was a hulking figure with a thick beard. River recognized him. He was the one Echo usually sent on important missions. Did that mean she was important to E
With contempt contorting her face, “I'm not a human.” River spat at him.As though it was written in her blood otherwise, he moved closer to her and sniffed her in even more like some hard drug. “You smell like one.” He finally said with a voice that held both the mixture of masculinity and femininity. “Well, I'm not. Anyway, it's none of your business. Give me back my letter. I have to get out of here.” River pressed on, left hand outstretched. He glanced at the letter in his hand for a brief moment, River noticing how long his lashes were. And then, like a robot, he turned and began to walk away with her letter in hand!River cursed under her breath before running after him. “Hold your horses right there! What in the hell are you doing picking up someone’s letter and walking away with it like it's yours?!” She hollered.Had she not supposed to be hiding from rogues and whatever dangerous creatures might be in these woods, River would have screamed at him at the topmost of her voice
After the promise, he took River inside. She stumbled in after him, blinking against the sudden gloom growing in her. She shouldn't be particularly sad by this delay as she initially had no destination in mind in the human world too. It didn't matter what day she got there. As long as she was away from Gonzalo and Echo, she was good. “You do know this is called bullying, don't you? Snatching me from the woods, finding my letter, and not just returning it to me like a gentleman would. But instead conjuring a bargain just to return to me what is rightfully mine! ” She scoffed, ranting and throwing her hands in the air. When he gave her no replies, she was about to yell out some more protests when the sight in front of her - as they walked into the mansion sent it right back into her throat. The interior of the mansion was even worse than the exterior. It was a lonesome landscape of peeling wallpaper, cobwebs thick enough to hang this bloody vampire on, and furniture surrounded by whi
Petrified that he had snuck up behind her, River’s fall to the floor was nasty. “So, who's the thief here?" He mocked, his voice echoing in the dark living room. “You, sneaking around after my property." River felt her cheeks burn. "Your property, okay. But what about my property? My property," she retorted, "that you took from me in the first place! It's not stealing if it's mine to begin with." He snorted, but even his snort sounded devilish. "Fine, argue semantics all you want. But you're not leaving here without fulfilling your end of the bargain." With a grunt, he tossed items at her – a mop thudded against her leg, a broom clattered to the floor beside it. A rag, a bottle of potent-smelling detergent, and a bucket followed in quick succession. "Get to work," he commanded with a darkened gleam in his crimson eyes. "The sooner you're done, the sooner you can be on your way." Yeah, right. Like she didn't want to get the hell out of here as soon as possible too. River scowled
SEVEN YEARS LATER~~As River scurried through the maze of hallways in the mansion, she suddenly remembered the meeting. The De la Mort family had called for a meeting of all the family members. Whenever they did this, the entire household was usually quiet as they’d spend hours and hours arguing, cursing, agreeing, and disagreeing with each other.River remembered the last time her daughter went to eavesdrop on them during the meeting and she went to get her…“Oh, please. Everyone knows you're all talk, and no action, brother!”“Sister, at least, I have never for once fallen in love with a human. Imagine loving a snack, but you, sister…”Argh. Mere thinking of their unending bruhahas was annoying enough. River shoved it off her head and focused on how they ended up catching her and her daughter while she went to get her the last time. And… they were punished. The punishment usually entailed producing a cup of their blood every day for a week for the whole family to dine with. River wo
Gonzalo McGruff~~The sound of the door creaking behind them as they stepped in filled the room. Echo stood by the door, a hand on her hips while she tapped on the floor with her legs.“It must feel weird to be back here, Gonzalo.” She said with a faint smile.Weird? It felt worse than weird. This was where it all happened. Here, with River, under the soft sheen of the moonlight that streamed through the grimy window. He could almost picture her there again.Standing there, exuding youth innocence and throwing herself at him. Him being a dick and unable to resist. He could still remember that night. Hell, he could picture it like it was yesterday.Maybe because it’d been haunting him for a while now. But why this room of all rooms? Had Echo forgotten? He forced a smile. "Weird," he managed to say. "Weirder than I thought it would be. Would it be possible for me to have another room?”Echo’s smile faltered. “Another room? Gonzalo, you know that’s impossible. We just took in survivors
Gonzalo felt overwhelmed with shame. He closed his eyes as the memories ran through his mind in quick succession. Then, he only wanted to keep River from her fairytale and had declared his intention to mate with Echo. It was but a lie fueled by fear and desperation.“Our agreement,” he said, shaking his head, “was for me to use it to wake her up. That was it, so don't use that against me now, Echo.”Echo’s fingers dug into his arm as she leaned completely into him. “Either way,” she hissed, “we are meant to be. Think of your pack.”Gonzalo yearned to agree. It was logical and practical. Merging their packs would create a formidable force, capable of better defending their territory. Yet, a part of him, the part that was still mourning River, the part that was overwhelmed with the possibility of her death, quivered at the thought.“I– I need time,” he mumbled. “I’m just getting over the loss of my pack," he finished with a strained voice. "I can't think about… uniting anything right no
River~~The spell worked perfectly fine! She couldn't believe she had mastered the teleportation spell. Without training except for some scraps written in her mother’s journal, she ought to receive a medal for this.Rain squealed with delight, burying her face in River's chest. "Mama! We did it! We escaped!"River hugged her daughter back, tears stinging her eyes. The excitement in her erased the terror of Lord Draven's face just moments ago.River scooped Rain into a hug, burying her face in her daughter's soft hair. Tears pricked her eyes as a combination of relief and exhilaration danced in her. They were free. Finally. After seven long years, they were finally free. No more De La Mort mansion, no more blood offerings, no more fear. Just them, and the promise of a new beginning. They reveled in their victory for a moment, laughing and holding each other close. But the satisfactory taste of freedom was short-lived. A gruff voice boomed through the silence."Who's there?"Huh?Riv
