Kelvin was furious and at lost for what next to do. Alice's smartness seemed to be just too much for him. He sat with Anita in an open air restaurant and had not said a word since. Anita was equally shocked that Alice was that intelligent to see through their manipulations. Clearly, she was not like the typical villager they had thought her to be.
"I'm still wondering, baby, how that local girl was able to see through that fake contract that was intelligently drafted" Anita said."I feel she has someone who is backing her up and telling her what to do" Kelvin said."But who?" Anita asked. "She's new here and could not have met anyone" she said.Kelvin sighed and ran his hand through his silky hair. "I hate her" He said with disgust. His face was seriously frowned."I hate the fact that I'm stuck in this mess, married to an ordinary village girl because of my inheritance. Why would my grandmother do this to me?" He asked and threw his back on the chair's back rest."Hey, baby, calm down" Anita consoled. "She does not have your property yet. And we have three whole years before that can happen. So we'll make it not to happen."Kelvin looked at her attentively. Anita leaned in and placed her hands on the table, with her fingers locked together."Let her have the contract that states that you'll give her half of your inheritance when you would have gotten your inheritance after the three years..." She said."What are you saying?" Kelvin was quick to protest. The thought of it and the sound of it was unpleasant to his ears and to his heart. He could not imagine giving half of all that was his to a woman he hated for forcing her way into his life, a woman who was uneducated and a villager."I can't do that. I'd rather she leaves and I'll just have to find another way to appease my grandma to give me what I deserve by right of birth" He said, shaking his head."Why don't you hear me out?" Anita asked him. He relaxed his back on the chair and stared at Anita."I understand how you feel but trust me when I say that if Alice tells your grandma everything, your grandma is willing to cut you off permanently and have everything she owns, that should be yours, given out to charity and she might also compensate Alice for all the troubles by giving her a huge part of the family's fortune. She might even name Alice the heiress to your inheritance" Anita explained and it dawned on Kelvin."Listen to me, Baby. When she brings the papers, you sign them and let this fake marriage of yours still be intact. Then, we will look for a way to eliminate her from your life" Anita said softly.Kelvin sat up straight, surprised, "Eliminate her? Like, kill her?" he asked. That was the first interpretation of the phrase 'eliminate her' that came into his head."No, Kelvin, that's not what I mean. What I mean is, that we set her up. Paint her to be evil before grandma. We'll make your grandma hate her passionately that she will throw Alice out of your family with her own hands. Then, you can play the innocent victim before your grandma and gain her sympathy. She'll feel guilty for forcing a characterless woman like Alice on you and that will make her allow you to marry the woman of your choice, which is me, obviously, and then you'll still get your inheritance" Anita explained carefully and Kelvin nodded his head continuously. The whole scene playing in his head as Anita was narrating was very pleasant to him. He smiled and calmed himself down from the anxiousness of having to give Alice his wealth."I love this plan." He said, still nodding his head, while Anita was smiling and feeling like a genius with the greatest idea ever."You're just too much, my love" Kelvin praised and she felt her head rise. She felt so proud of herself."What would I do without you?" Kelvin asked rhetorically, adding to her ego."Absolutely nothing, baby" she giggled as she replied him."You're right" Kelvin said, smiling out of excitement and then he sighed with relief."I can't wait for that Alice to leave my life in peace" he said."Soon, baby. Very soon" Anita laughed as they started with their food.*****Alice kept herself very busy with grandma Janet, everyday. Especially since Kelvin was never around the house. That evening, Madame Janet and Alice were having a good time in the living room on the top floor of the duplex mansion. They were playing a simple game of cards and grandma Janet was leading Alice in the scores. Alice intentionally allowed the old woman have her victory by intentionally making careless moves every now and then."I thought you were very good at this game?" Innocent grandma Janet asked Alice, wondering why she was beating Alice with about 7 points.Alice smiled, "I am, grandma but it seems you're better than me in this. I think I had underestimated you Grandma" Alice lied and the old woman smiled deeply."Yes, you did underestimate me. I may be old but I'm still very active up here" grandma Janet bragged and tapped her temples lightly, still smiling."Sure grandma" Alice smiled backAs they played, Kelvin walked in and was making his way past them. Grandma Janet caught him, almost slipping past them."Why are you sneaking past us, Kelvin?" She asked out loud and Kelvin startled and stopped on impulse, on his track.Alice looked up to his direction and saw him. Her heart resented him that instant and her wide smile slowly reduced to something forced on her face.Kelvin slowly got himself and turned to his grand mother and Alice."I wasn't sneaking, grandma" he defended with a shrug."Oh yes, you were. I saw you, Kelvin." Grandma Janet said."Where are you coming from?" She asked him immediately."From the office" He replied quickly."You're lying, Kelvin." Grandma said, gesturing with her index finger as if she was pointing at him."I'm not grandma" He defended again and walked to where she was seated with Alice.Alice ignored him and kept her head lowered, facing the cards before her on the table."You are. I had called the company and you weren't on seat" Grandma Janet said.Kelvin knew he was caught in his lie. He said nothing and avoided his grandmother's gaze for a while."So, where were you?" Grandma Janet asked him again."I had some personal matters to attend to" he replied."I want to know what those matters are" Grandma Janet insisted."Grand ma......" Kelvin dragged and walked to his grandma and sweetly placed his arms around her."I'm an adult, grandma and I have personal matters that are meant for me alone. I deserve that space, you know?" he spoke very softly and sweetly that grandam Janet had to flash her teeth wide open in smile.Alice took a quick and stealthily glance at him out of the corner of her eyes. The only personal matter that he was keeping a secret from his grandmother was his affair with Anita, despite being married. Alice eyed him and kissed her teeth at him silently, then faced her cards back."It's okay. I understand" Grandma Janet said and Kelvin smiled."Now, why don't you join us here, and play a relaxing and exciting game of cards with us?" Grandma Janet asked him.Kelvin and Alice quickly looked at each other, their eyes meeting and understanding the unspoken resentment of being together in a game. Alice immediately blinked her eyes away from him and placed him on her cards. She was very certain that he was going to decline his grandmother's offer, and she did not care anyway."I'm sorry grandma. I'm tired and I want to rest" Kelvin said."This is a time for you to bond with your family, Kelvin. Come on, a few rounds of this game will not increase the stress on you" Grandma persuaded and Alice hated it. To her, Grandma Janet should just let Kelvin be and let them enjoy themselves till dinner.Kelvin did not want to get his grandmother suspicious about his fake relationship with Alice. She had already asked him twice and had emphasized on the part of bonding with his family, which he very much knew that his grandmother was referring to him bonding with Alice. Grandma Janet had noticed his absence from the house always hence, she was initiating that."Alright grandma. I'll join you both" Kelvin accepted to the silent surprise of Alice, who said nothing to oppose his involvement in the card game.Alice simple shuffled the cards and dealt a new deal of cards to the three of them and they started playing. The game was going well for them. Alice minded her business and restricted her excitements level. She spoke little and only to grandma Janet. Kelvin joked and spoke as they played only to his grandma also, as he was avoiding Alice. They had gone three rounds in the game with Grandma Janet the Victor of the three rounds, when she said something shocking to them."You both haven't been on your honeymoon"Alice and Kelvin were perplexed and instantly quiet. Both were praying in their heart that grandma Janet would not insist that they go on a honeymoon, but their prayers were in vain."I have arranged your honeymoon for you" Grandma Janet started. "You will be going on a mini cruise for a month and two weeks round the world, and I'm very sure that you'll love it just as it will make your love stronger" She smiled after making her announcement.Alice and Kelvin were perfectly still, with their individual thoughts going through their heads. When they thought that they could manage to survive just seeing each other few times in a day, grandma Janet was about to keep them together for a whole six weeks. Alice and Kelvin could see the terrible disaster that was waiting for them. They both wished they could plainly refuse and Grandma Janet would just let them have their say, but that would never happen."There will be a welcome party by the company to officially welcome Alice as a member and have certain amount of shares allocated to her, next week and after that, you'll be on your honeymoon trip round the world" Grandma Janet continued her announcement. It pained Kelvin that Alice was going to have some shares in his company but he said nothing."Grandma" Kelivn called, "I don't think this is the time to go on a honeymoon being that we have a lot work to do in the company" Kelvin said softly."Don't worry about that dear. I'll have someone assigned to overseeing those projects while you and your wife are away." Grandma Janet said and added immediately she saw the unpleasant look on Kelvin's face, "Everything will be okay. I'm here to make sure of that. You have nothing to worry about and if there happen to be an emergency before your world tour would be over, which I'm sure there won't be, I'll let you know and then you and Alice can leave the tour and come back, okay?" she said.Kelvin nodded. He was beaten and defeated. He had no choice but to prepare himself for a long time stuck together with Alice. Alice was quiet and trying to accept that reality and to prepare her self for it. There was nothing that would stop that honeymoon tour as long as Grandma Janet had said it.They played till it was dinner time and then they had their dinner before retiring to bed for the day.Kelvin and Alice walked together, quietly with grandma Janet, till she got to her bedroom and bade them good night with a kiss to both of them on their cheeks. The moment grandma Janet's door was closed shut, both Kelvin and Alice stopped their pretence. Alice kissed her teeth hard at Kelvin and walked away. Kelvin followed behind her. They got to their room and Kelvin entered after her, almost slamming the door behind him."So, you put up my grandmother into giving you some shares in my company and making us go on a honeymoon?" Kelvin faced Alice.Alice turned to him with her smallish body, squared against his masculine body."As your wife, I have every right to those company shares till you get your inheritance and I am given full rights over half of everything you own..." Alice said and it stung Kelvin a little but he encouraged himself with the plan Anita gave him.".....and about the honeymoon trip, don't flatter yourself. You're not that special that I would want to spent weeks on a ship with you" Alice said and eyed him. Then, she turned away from him, making her way to the closet."You don't speak to me that way" Kelvin said and grabbed her by her arm, instantly, pulling her close to himself.Alice struggled away from his grip, with her hand on his chest."You let me go right now or else...." Alice commanded."Or else what?" Kelvin asked.Alice could feel his hot breath on her face and she frowned deeply, irritated by it."Your little devious schemes against me and my inheritance will not work. It's only a matter of time till I figure out a way to get you out of my life completely" Kelvin said."I have no scheme against you. You are the evil one who lied to me and married me and has brought me here to torture me. And I won't let you get your way and treat me like I am worth nothing. I won't allow myself to suffer at your hand. This will be price for marrying me in this manner" Alice said, staring him in the eye. They held each other's angry gaze for a while. Kelvin's eyes revealed utter disgust for the uneducated villager who was beginning to prove herself to be smarter than he had thought. Alice's eyes showed utter contempt for the man who had paraded himself to her as a saint and an angel and ended up being much worse than the devil himself."If you don't let me go this instant, I'm going to scream till grandma gets here and then I'll tell her that you're hitting me" Alice threatened seriously and Kelvin slowly left her.Alice soothingly rubbed her arm where Kelvin had held onto very tight. That part of her skin was reddened as a result of his tight grip on it. Kelvin watched her with regret. If he had known, he would have been open about not wanting to marry her from the beginning.Alice gave him a brief stern look before heading into the walk-in closet to change into her night wear.Alice got up early that morning and prepared to meet with her lawyer concerning the papers Kelvin was to sign. She took excuse from Grandma Janet and told her that she wanted to go to the church to pray and she would skip breakfast. It pleased grandma Janet that Alice loved God, being a religious woman and she was okay with it.Kelvin woke up and could not find Alice in the room and even at the dinning for breakfast. "Where is Alice?" Kevin asked his grandmother as they had breakfast."She went to the church" Grandma Janet said with a smile. "That girl is just too lovely and to think that she loves the Lord too" Kelvin sighed in his mind and continued with his food. At least he was spared the horrors of seeing her face that morning and he wished it would become a norm for Alice."Why didn't you go with her?" Grandma Janet asked him."I have things to do.....at the office" Kelvin replied."That is no excuse, son" Grandma Janet said, shaking her head."Next time, Grandma. I'll go with
Alice was all set for the party that evening. She was a bit nervous but toughened herself to mingle with the high and mighty. The party took place in the large event hall of the Sander's company and every affluent personality attended. Alice looked unexpectedly beautiful and grandma Janet applauded her, while Kelvin chose to disagree with his eyes to the fact that the local girl was looking like a beautiful, educated woman. Alice was beside grandma Janet and Kelvin as she was being introduced to every one present. Alice was struggling to keep up with her company, and to follow up with the light banter from each person they met. The high heels on her feet were killing and she was not comfortable with the too many jewelries she had on her. She was a simple girl born in and brought up with a simple lifestyle. She thought to herself, that it would take forever or even never to get adjusted to the high life of the Sanders. While Alice and her company were still making their rounds, she
"You know Anita?" Daniel asked, surprised. "Yes, though not in person" Alice replied. "I should have known they would try to make me look bad before grandma" she added. "They?" Daniel asked. It became obvious to him that Anita was not the only one with a desire to harm Alice and that Alice was already aware. "Yes, they." Alice replied and stood up. "Thank you Daniel, for everything" she said and left without Daniel stopping her. ***** They got home that evening and Alice faced Kelvin as soon as grandma Janet bade them good night and left for her room. They were still at the foyer. "So, you and your girlfriend laced my drink with alcohol to make me disgrace grandma and make her cut me off from the family?" Alice attacked. "You're lucky you got saved" Kelvin replied her in what was almost a whisper. "You really want me to tell Grandma the whole truth, right?" Alice said and a flash of fear swept through Kelvin's heart. "You won't dare!" he stepped closer to her, "I've
Alice was engrossed in her book when she heard a knock on the door. She stood up and walked to the door. She opened and saw Daniel. He wore a welcoming smile but Alice teeth-kissed and closed the door against him. Daniel quickly pushed the door open and came in behind her. "That's no way to welcome a friend" Daniel said Alice did not reply. She went back to her bed and continued with her book. "The welcome party has started" Daniel informed. Alice still said nothing. Daniel walked to the bed and snatched the book from her hand. "Hey! Give it back!" Alice stood up and tried to get the book back from him. Daniel dogged and took his hand which held the book behind him. "Get dressed. let's go to the party" Daniel instructed "You're not the boss of me" Alice eyes flashed defiance "Give me my book and get out of my room" she commanded "Not until you get dressed and come with me to the party." Daniel insisted "I'm not going to any party. I just want to read my book a
On the dance floor, Kelvin's eyes caught Alice, beautiful and charming, and in the arms of another man, dancing. He was disturbed. He never expected to see Alice in the party, but there she was, enjoying every bit of it. He was not sure how he felt. Was he angry? Was he jealous? He didn't know. Perhaps he was not expecting a girl of her status to be captivating men. He found himself being concerned and staring at her, though he tried very hard to ignore it. Daniel, who was dancing with Victoria, saw Alice on the dance floor with Lucas and his heart was filled with warmth. She danced effortlessly and graciously that one would think she was a pro. Alice occasionally smiled at Lucas words and Daniel's breath would cease. Gosh! she was very beautiful and very attractive to him. How was he going to survive six weeks with her on that ship without being tempted to at least give her a kiss? he wondered. Kelvin was equally confused at himself and his internal reactions to Alice on th
The gentle knock at the door stirred Alice from her restless sleep. She blinked against the morning light filtering through the curtains, disoriented for a moment before the events of the previous night came rushing back. She sat up slowly, running a hand through her tousled hair. The knock came again, firmer this time. “Who is it?” she called, her voice still groggy. “It’s Daniel,” came the familiar voice from the other side. “I brought breakfast.” Alice’s stomach twisted—not from hunger, but from the complicated emotions his presence always seemed to stir. She glanced at herself in the mirror across the room, noting her rumpled appearance, but decided she didn’t care. “Come in,” she said, her tone guarded. The door opened, and Daniel stepped inside, carrying a tray laden with a steaming pot of coffee, a plate of croissants, fresh fruit, and a small vase with a single rose. He looked effortlessly charming in a crisp white shirt and dark slacks, his easy smile softening as
Alice stepped into the ship’s grand lobby, the rich mahogany walls and sparkling chandeliers giving the space an air of opulence she still hadn’t gotten used to. Guests milled about, chatting in clusters or strolling leisurely, their laughter blending with the soft piano music playing in the background. At the concierge desk, Alice picked up a copy of the ship's glossy brochure, its cover showcasing a serene image of the ship cutting through turquoise waters. She turned away from the desk and settled into one of the plush armchairs nearby to flip through the pages. The brochure was packed with information: dining options, scheduled events, and an intricate map of the ship. Alice’s finger traced the pathways and staircases, her curiosity piqued by the variety of activities available—dance lessons, cooking classes, trivia contests,..... and even a sprawling arcade tucked away on the lower deck. As she read, the faint sound of familiar footsteps caught her attention. She looked up
Alice stepped into the suite, the quiet click of the door behind her marking her arrival. The cool air of the room greeted her, a stark contrast to the bustling energy of the ship’s lobby she had just left. She longed for a moment of solitude, a chance to collect her thoughts after the strange mixture of lighthearted games with Daniel and the lingering bitterness of her marriage to Kelvin. But as she moved further into the room, she froze. Kelvin was there, standing by the window, his back to her. He was stiff, radiating tension, a half-empty glass of whiskey clutched in his hand. “You’re finally back,” he said without turning around, his voice clipped and tight. Alice narrowed her eyes but said nothing, moving toward the small sitting area and perching on the arm of a chair. Kelvin turned to face her, his expression hard. “We need to talk.” “Do we?” she asked coolly, folding her arms. “Don’t start, Alice,” he snapped, taking a step closer. “I just got off the call with Gr
After lunch, Kimberly decided it was time for an outing. “You need a change of scenery,” she declared, already grabbing her purse and keys. Their first stop was a luxurious spa nestled in the heart of the city, a place known for its serene ambiance and top-tier treatments. As soon as Alice stepped inside, she was enveloped by the soothing scent of lavender and the gentle strains of instrumental music playing in the background. The tension in her shoulders began to ease almost immediately. “You need to relax,” Kimberly insisted as they changed into plush, white robes. “And nothing does that better than a full-body massage.” Alice sighed as she lay face-down on the massage table, her body sinking into the soft padding. The skilled hands of the masseuse worked their magic, kneading away the knots of stress and worry that had built up over the past few weeks. Beside her, Kimberly chuckled softly. “Admit it, you needed this,” Kimberly teased, her voice muffled slightly as she rested her
The dining hall of the Sanders mansion was as grand as ever, bathed in the soft, golden glow of the chandeliers that hung like glittering constellations above. The long, polished table was set with an extravagant feast—crystal glasses filled with wine, silver platters laden with delicacies, and fine china that gleamed under the light. Yet, despite the opulence, the atmosphere was unusually light, almost cheerful. For the first time since returning from the cruise, Alice felt a semblance of ease. Conversations flowed effortlessly, drifting from business matters to travel anecdotes, and even lighthearted childhood memories as Grandma Janet indulged in her favorite pastime: storytelling. Kelvin sat beside Alice, his presence a constant reminder of the life she was still tethered to. He was as composed as ever, his sharp features softened slightly by the warm light. But Alice noticed the way his eyes flickered toward her occasionally, as if he were studying her. He pretended to focus on
Alice's heart had finally made its choice. It was Daniel, not Kelvin, who had captured her affection. For years, she had clung to the faint hope that Kelvin might change, that he might one day treat her with the respect and love she deserved as his wife. But time and time again, he had proven himself to be a man of little integrity—selfish, cold, and utterly unworthy of her devotion. The realization had settled deep within her, like a stone sinking to the bottom of the ocean. She could no longer deny the truth: Kelvin was not the man she had once believed him to be. He was, in fact, the worst kind of person—someone who took without giving, who demanded loyalty but offered none in return. Her decision was final. She would no longer waste her days yearning for Kelvin’s love, a love that had never truly existed. Instead, her heart had turned toward Daniel, a man who had shown her kindness, warmth, and a love that felt genuine and unselfish. Daniel’s presence in her life had been a beacon
The ship docked yet again. The sun blazed overhead as Alice, Daniel, Kimberly, and a handful of other passengers from the ship wandered through the bustling streets of the coastal town. The port was alive with energy—street vendors hawked their wares, the air thick with the scent of sizzling food, and the chatter of locals and tourists mingled into a lively symphony. For a moment, Alice allowed herself to forget the tensions aboard the ship, the tangled emotions surrounding Kelvin and Daniel, and simply breathed in the freedom of the foreign town. But then, she made a mistake. She had paused at a small shop, captivated by a display of handmade jewelry. Kimberly was deep in negotiation with a vendor, and Daniel had wandered off to inspect something across the street. Not wanting to disturb them, Alice decided to explore on her own. She ventured down a narrow alley, drawn by the charm of the old architecture and the quiet respite from the market’s chaos. But as she turned a corner, he
The ship was lively that evening, guests scattered across different entertainment spots, enjoying the luxury the cruise had to offer. Alice, however, had no interest in the grand dinners or the glamorous social events. After spending most of the day forcing smiles beside Kelvin for Grandma Janet, and her mind centered on Daniel and his feelings for her - she subtly excused herself from their company. Soon, she found herself in the dimly lit corridor leading to the deck—a place where she could be alone. Or so she thought. Just as she reached for the railing to steady herself, a voice stopped her. "Why do we always end up being alone?" Alice froze. She didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. The familiar depth of Daniel’s voice sent an immediate shiver down her spine. Taking a slow breath, she composed herself before facing him. He stood a few feet away, arms crossed, his sharp gaze never leaving her. The ship's soft lighting illuminated his face, casting shadows that m
The next morning, Alice made her way to one of the ship’s finest restaurants, her emotions still raw from the previous night. Dressed in an elegant yet simple blue dress, she tried to compose herself as she stepped inside, already spotting Grandma Janet seated at a prime spot by the window, where the sea stretched endlessly in the background. Kelvin was already there, seated beside his grandmother, his posture relaxed, but Alice could tell that he was on edge. Across from him sat Daniel, looking effortlessly handsome in a crisp white shirt with the top button undone. His eyes briefly met Alice’s as she entered, but he looked away just as quickly. Standing behind Grandma Janet was Simi, her ever-efficient personal assistant. Simi was a tall, slender woman in her forties with a composed demeanor, always dressed impeccably in professional yet stylish outfits. She was rarely seen without her tablet, always ready to take notes or handle whatever task was required of her. "Alice, my d
Alice sat by the poolside, her thoughts tangled in a whirlwind of emotions. The kiss with Kelvin had left her restless, confused, and questioning everything she thought she knew about him—and herself. She felt a surge of romantic emotions flowing through her. He was her husband and it was right before men and heaven that she would weave fantasies about him. She thought to herself, maybe Kelvin was sincere about making the three years of their marriage worth it. Maybe he was being sorry for deceiving her into the marriage and making her to suffer. She remembered how he had apologized to her by the pool, showing regret and remorse. The only thing she prayed earnestly in her heart was for love to bloom in his heart for her, so strong that he would never want to divorce her after getting his inheritance. And she would be able to forget Daniel and his love. “A penny for your thoughts?” she heard and glanced up to see Daniel standing beside her, his usual easy smile in place. His presen
A heavy silence hung between them as Alice stared at the bouquet in front of her. Alice inhaled slowly, then exhaled, forcing herself to remain composed. She could feel Kelvin’s eyes on her, silently pleading, silently challenging. Then, with a measured calm, she reached for the bouquet. She didn’t hold it close or smell the flowers, but the mere act of picking them up was enough of an answer. “Alright,” she said, her voice even, betraying nothing. “Let’s have breakfast.” Kelvin, however, looked relieved. Without another word, he pulled out her chair as she stood, an uncharacteristically chivalrous move that did not go unnoticed. As they sat, the waiter immediately brought over another tray of breakfast for Kelvin, as if he had already placed the order in anticipation of her agreement. Alice arched a brow at him, but he only smirked. “You were that sure I’d say yes?” she asked. Kelvin leaned back in his chair, his smirk turning into something softer. “No. But I wanted to b
Dim lighting, soft music, and a half-empty bottle of wine and a glass of wine in each person's hand set the mood as Alice, Daniel, and Kimberly settled onto the couch. Alice had made up her mind to have fun and forget about Kelvin or the rules of her being married, after all her husband was not worth it. Kimberly spoke, "We're starting with the game, Never have I ever...." "Nice" Daniel smiled. Kimberly turned to Alice, "You do know how to play, right?" "Of course, I do" Alice smiled "Perfect" Kimberly leaned forward with a mischievous grin. “Alright, let’s get this game started. I’ll go first.” She picked up her glass, eyes gleaming with amusement. “Never have I ever… kissed someone and regretted it.” Alice’s fingers tensed around her glass. The memory of that night on the deck with Daniel resurfaced. The way she had allowed herself to be drawn in, the warmth of his body so close, the whisper of his lips against hers before she had pulled away—before reality had come cras
