[REIGN'S POINT OF VIEW]
Death becomes something you no longer fear when you have countered it several times; it becomes nothing new and even expect it every minute of the day when you are the type of man that I am. A man that has so many enemies more than allies.
As soon as the call ends, I flip the phone on the nearest table just as the door opens and the kinder friend enters with a paper bag. She looks hesitant as she approaches the bed. My behavior earlier must have planted a seed of doubt.
Compared to Daphne, this one is pretty. Heart-shaped face with a smooth and creamy complexion. Amber eyes shone with brightness as if the world hadn't done any damage. Her hair is black and straight, and it falls down her back and her build is slender. Unfortunately, I have felt it.
“You should eat.” She places the paper bag on the table. Despite the look of uncertainty in her eyes, there is a smile on her face that slowly morphs into a frown as her gaze lands on the phone. “This is Daphne’s phone. What is it doing here?” she picks it up.
“Your friend was here.” I test the waters. “She claims she was the one who patched me up; she wanted payment for her services.”
She looks at me sharply with a cute glare. “Daphne will never do that.” she finalizes.
“You trust her that much?”
“Of course I do. I grew up with Daphne, and we have always had each other’s backs. She will never go behind my back.” she defends with a naive look in her eyes. Such bright eyes are not suitable for the world we live in. “Besides, what could she ask for? Money? Daphne is not greedy.”
Ah. it appears she knows nothing about her friend. Those eyes earlier were filled with greed and selfishness. “I jest. Don't you want money? What if I can give you all the money you want as long as you ask for it? You saved my life; I should give you anything you want.”
“What are you, a Jiny?” She leans her body down and studies my face. I get a sniff of her sweet lavender scent. “Can you really grant my wish?” her amber eyes shone mischievously and oh, I might have misjudged her character.
“What do you want?” I play her game and move closer. I can feel her breathing fan against my face.
As if the spell broke, she blinks and immediately moves away and clears her throat. I don't miss the rosiness on her cheek. “I don't want anything from you; I don't care if you have all the money in the world. I will earn my money my way. You should eat and regain your strength.”
Without another word, I watch as she walks out of the tiny bedroom.

The next day comes, and it’s time to leave. I walk out of the bedroom dressed in my clothes. I enter the living room to find my assistant, Dean, and Daphne, innocent Rae is nowhere to be found. I sneer. “Where’s your friend?” I inquire as I extend my hand to Dean and he places a chequebook and a pen.
She rolls her eyes. “Do you like her? Rae is too pure to be dragged into your world of power and manipulation.”
I smirk. “You speak from experience, Miss Daphne. Perhaps you have encountered more elicit people or perhaps you have encountered a person from the Montgomery family?” I look at her and see the way her eyes twitch. Ah. I have hit a soft spot.
“Just sign the check and leave.” she snaps just as I hand her the piece of check that she snatches from me rudely.
“I believe that’s enough to compensate for my time here and your healing powers.”
“It’s enough. It was nice doing business with you, Mr. Reign Montgomery,” she says with a smirk and I nod in acknowledgment before leaving the apartment with Dean trailing behind me.
The fresh winds welcome me as I approach the Maybach Exelero parked at the side.
“Mr. Reign.” Dean catches up as he opens the back seat door of the car. “The check doesn't hold your seal; there’s no way she can cash it. You forgot to add that.”
I smirk and look down at the apartment building with peeling and faded sidings; it looks like it suffered the most cruelty in this city. “No, Dean, I didn't forget,” I say and slip in the car and he hurries to the driver’s seat and starts the car.
“Who knows what she is going to do once she discovers she can't cash the check? Perhaps, I should take care of them? They know too much, boss,” he looks at me through the rear glass with a deadly look I know too much.
I shake my head. “No. Keep them alive. I believe we are destined to meet again. They could be of use to me. What have I missed these past few days?” I ask and he passes me a binder that I immediately go through while he drives the car.
“The sales meeting with XYZ Corporation has been rescheduled until your return and Mr. Liam isn't too happy about it and has been going down my throat for your whereabouts. This is the first time you have gone missing for so long, boss. I almost thought I wouldn't see you again.”
I snort. I thought for a moment that dark alley would be the last thing I see in this lifetime till I met an angel. “Did you find out the identity of those men?” My eyes darkens as I thought of the bastard that nearly took my life this time. How close they were.
“Yes, Boss. I asked the men to keep one of them alive for your interrogation. Also, Mr. Montgomery collapsed; the doctor said he has to be bedridden.”
“Let’s get me a new suit, Dean.”
“Yes, Boss.”

The Montgomery family is known all over the city as the most powerful, richest, and largest family.
The Montgomery family is a playground, a chess where they are pawns. It’s a ground filled with the most twisted minds and they have earned their reputation as the most manipulative.
The Montgomery family is a place where everyone couldn't wait for the patriarch to lose his life so they could become the next heir—the Montgomery mansion is a place of power struggle, manipulation, greed, and personal interest. A place filled with hungry tigers that couldn't wait to rip the throat out of their prey, and I am the third son of the Montgomery family.
As I step into the grand entrance of the mansion, I am welcomed with the familiar sight of elegance. My gaze is fixed ahead and my steps echo with the steps I take.
With my hands shoved into my pocket, I ignore the soft greetings of the maids as I pass them, my expression remaining never changing. I stride up the stairs and head to grandfather’s room and getting there, I am not surprised to see the loyal protege already there, dutifully attending to our grandfather lying on the bed.
“Ah, Reign, you are finally here; I thought I wouldn't see you again till my funeral.”
“Grandfather,” I say in acknowledgment just as the loyal protege looks at me with those brown eyes of his that look so pure yet tainted. No member of the Montgomery family is pure. “Liam.” I acknowledge—we are all filled with power-hungry demons that are just waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.
“Reign.” He gives me a once-over. “You are alright?”
I raise an eyebrow. “Shouldn't I be, Liam? Perhaps you thought I wouldn't return alive?”
A glint flashes in his eyes and his lips curl into a smile. “Those are harsh words for your brother, who cares for your well-being. Your disappearance has been felt by everyone and as the acting CEO as Grandfather is sick, you should know your life is important to the company and the family,” he approaches me and places a hand over my shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. “I am glad to see that you are alright; you have made, especially Grandfather, so worried.” With a pat on my shoulder, he walks out of the room.
This is a playground and if you are not careful, you get dragged underneath the mud with no way out. A ground filled with caged and hungry tigers and we all play the same game.
“Of course, brother.”
[DAPHNE'S POINT OF VIEW]"I'm sorry, miss, but you can't cash this check. You should leave before I call security.”The words resound in my head. They are taunting and heckling; they prickle through my skin as I burst through the doors of the acrid apartment and bangs the door behind me, hoping it falls off its hinges. I amble into the living room and almost rip my hair off my skull as I throw the bland check on the table. I stare at it with animosity. That bastard! I should have known that he couldn't be trusted. How could I be so naive to think I could trust any word that plummets the mouths of any members of that cursed family? They are all the same. Lying, manipulative fucks!I can still remember the distrusting look the bitch at the bank gave me before she spat the heckling words at my face like I was some thief. She thinks I can't have that much money, legally! Huh! “I am going to make you pay for this humiliation, bastard!” I bark at the piece of paper, hoping it can feel my
[RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW]“You are fired.”Those are the words that greeted me when I entered my boss's office, Mr. Dante. I pause abruptly at the door, like a deer caught in the spotlight. “What?” I choke out. Maybe I misheard him? He can't fire me.He tsks and leans back on his twirling seat behind his desk. His brown eyes pin me. “You heard me. You are fired.”“But why? I haven't done anything to get fired.” I look at him with vast eyes.He shrugs. "I don't need a reason to fire you. Your services are no longer needed here. This place is getting crowded; paying you all is difficult. Make sure you are out of here in the next 30 minutes."I stare at him like a fish out of water, gaping with the words hanging in my throat, but I cannot force them out. My shoulder drops, I turn and walk out of his office. Knowing Mr. Dante, no amount of begging is going to make him change his mind. He is that cold-hearted. With a sigh and my shoulders slumping lower, I turn and leave his office.*~*I f
[RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW]My heart hammers as Daphne and I stand shoulder to shoulder at the gates of the Montgomery mansion, our bags clutched tightly in our hands. We are not alone; there are three other girls hovering near the entrance, all of them looking as overwhelmed as I feel. The mansion stretches above and around us, an endless expanse of stone, archways, and towering columns that display money and wealth.I can’t help but gape as I take it all in—the vast estate, the carved facade, the imposing double doors of polished wood and brass. Each detail is elegant, intimidating, nothing I’ve ever seen. Nothing I've ever stepped into. I've known nothing but poverty all my life.Daphne nudges me gently, her gaze just as captivated by the estate as I am. “Looks like a palace, doesn’t it?” she murmurs, eyes wide.“It does,” I whisper back, glancing around to see the same sense of awe reflected in the eyes of the other girls. We all stand there in stunned silence, barely able to believ
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)It's been a day since we arrived at the mansion, and I must confess it was the most peaceful I've ever slept in, without being woken up by the noisiness of the neighbors, but the peacefulness was soon cut short when Ms. Alice comes knocking on all our doors, and we found ourselves out in a straight line, dressed in our maids' outfits, which is a deep, inky black with a fitted bodice, tailored to flatter but not cling, reaching just below the knees. I like it.Ms Alice looks at us with a calculating gaze that looks almost judging before she finally voices, “Stand straighter.” It was like our bodies moved automatically to the sound of her voice as we straighten our poor posture. So this is what it's like working in the mansion?“I am guessing you all slept well last night,” she begins as she holds her hands behind her. “Yesterday I wasn’t able to inform you of the rules of the mansion. There are ten rules you must follow while working in this mansion: No Speakin
(DAPHNE'S POINT OF VIEW)It's been five days since Rae and I started working in the Montgomery mansion, and I have kept a low profile. My target for the past two days has proven to be a difficult fish to catch, but it isn't like I have seen any of the family members yet. It's like the mansion has been deserted, but I know they still live here.I have kept my eyes and ears open for the whereabouts of Reign Montgomery, but I have been told he rarely visits the mansion, and the day at the garden had been a stroke of luck, but not today. Turns out, my big fish decides to come out to the surface, and hell will I pass up such an opportunity.I stand in front of Reign's bedroom with the bland check in my hand, and without a second thought, I knock on the door, and it opens a few seconds later to reveal the familiar face of his assistant, who quickly scans his eyes over me before meeting my eyes.I shove the check at his face. He takes it from me. "I believe I am allowed to see Mr. Montgomery
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)On the fifth day of working at the mansion, I finally witnessed the Montgomery family together for the first time. The dinner table is filled with bickering; everyone is lashing out at each other. Twenty chairs are almost all filled, and silverware clinks sharply against plates. Their voices overlap in bursts of laughter, yet they hold no warmth. It's like being in a fortress of egos competing for attention. From where I stand with the other maids, I watch silently in shock, ready to step in at the drop of a fork. Across the table, Mrs Lila, the eldest daughter, who looks over 50, leans forward, her eyes pinned on her sister, Pam, and her husband. Her eyes are judging."Of course, some of us don’t have to worry about real work," she sneers. "Was it just one smart investment or was it a stroke of pure luck?"Pam's mouth twitches, but she smiles, too sharp to be friendly. "Oh, dear, real work doesn’t suit everyone," she replies with a chuckle. "I prefer smart w
(DAPHNE'S POINT OF VIEW )Liam’s bedroom is dark and cold. The thick curtains in the room block rays of sunlight from peeling through, leaving the place dim and depressing. My heart pounds underneath my chest when I slip into the room, every nerve inside me is on high alert but I know it's empty. I saw when he left . The bed sits perfectly made in the middle. On the nightstands, there’s almost nothing. Across the room, there's a dresser that holds a single glass and crystal decanter, nothing else, like it’s only there for show. The room feels empty, like there's no personal touches, just neat rows of suits in the open wardrobe and a faint smell of cologne. But that's not why I'm here. The information I got earlier keeps running through my mind—Liam knows what happened to my parents. And if he is involved, the best place to find proof is here.I silently shut the door softly behind me and start searching. I open drawers. I check under papers, even feeling behind the paintings on the w
(REIGN'S POINT OF VIEW)My office being located at the twentieth floor of the company's being, I stand in front of the tall glass windows and look down at the glimmering city in front of me. Everything looks like tiny from here, everything looks like they are on the palm of my hand, mine to control and mine to crush. My shoulders rise when I get a sniff of power and control in the air. The Manhattan skyline looks splendid today. It stretches endlessly beyond the glass walls. The thought brings a smirk to my face. I shove my hand into my pocket and take out a packet of cigar, popping a stick into my mouth.“Sir, you shouldn’t”Dean's voice reaches my ears in a warning as I bring up the lighter but proceeds to light it up and releases a puff of smoke into the air and there comes that tightness in my chest that has been persistent and so familiar that I have entertained and gotten used to it. “Did you do everything as planned Dean?” I inquire, not taking my eyes from the blusting city un
(LIAM'S POINT OF VIEW)I stand in my room. The air feels thick, like the house itself is suffocating under the weight of our shared malice and greed. My hands rest in my pockets, fingers curling into fists, and I stare at the floor as if the answers I’ve been chasing are hidden in there. This place—this family—it’s nothing more than a cage filled with predators, all circling the same prey. The old man.He sits at the center of it all, clutching his wealth, his power, his legacy as if he can take it to the grave with him. Maybe he knows. Obviously he senses the knives at his back, the poison in the wine, the traps laid in every corner of his empire. Grandfather barely looks at me unless it’s to criticize. His approval, his respect—both always feel just out of reach, like a cruel game I’ll never win. But for him? For him, it’s different. They’re all so eager, so desperate. They think they can scare him into an early grave with their scheming and backdoor deals, but the old man’s toughe
(REIGN'S POINT OF VIEW)“What plans do you have for Miss Raelynn, sir?”The question causes me to raise my head from the file I'm reading. I look at Dean who sits at the driver's seat, hands on the wheels and eyes focused on the road ahead of him.“It's only a matter of time she's paid to work for them. It's obvious she's attracted to you, why don't you use the opportunity to get her to work for you.” he continues.I tilt my head. “Do you believe she could easily be bribed?”He shrugs. “With the amount they offer and persuasive they are, anyone will easily be tempted. Besides, she's just a maid and she just needs money. You can offer her something better,”I smirk at the ambiguity in his words. “Do you think I will live that long, Dean? Perhaps, my end is nearer than the old man's,” “Sir! You shouldn't say something like that!” He clamors.“My health is deteriorating, it's best if we don't keep our hopes up.” I dismiss the idea.“Only if you consider the surgery. There's a fifty chan
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW) I guess I spoke too soon when I said it's peaceful now. I thought they'd forgotten about me.I sit in front of Mrs. Pam and Ethan on the opposite sofa in Ethan's bedroom. Their eyes scan me over, judging yet calculative.“What do you want?“The question from Mrs Pam catches me off guard, my brows wrinkle in confusion. “I don't understand.““Don't try to act innocent. How much did Llia offer you, I will give you double of it.“ she narrows her eyes.“I don't know what you are talking about, Mrs Pam, I have been offered nothing.“ Where the hell is she going with this?“Fine then, how much do you need to be my pawn.“ My eyes immediately widen in realization. “I-I-I…”“I will stop beating around the bush. My father has taken a liking to you and it still puzzles me to no end but if that's his choice, I won't go against it but that doesn't mean I won't turn it to my favor.“ She pins me with a stare. “What do you know about the content of his will?““H-his will?“ I
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)“Daphne.“ Her eyes are harsh and her jaw is clenched, matching the tight grip she has on my grip that makes me yanks it free from her forcefully.“That hurts.“ I pout as I rub my wrist, looking at her in sheer confusion on what I have done this time.“I saw what you did with Reign. How can you allow yourself to be fooled and used, Rae!“ She begins, shocking once more with her tone of voice. “I keep telling you; no one in this household can be trusted. All of them have motives behind their actions. And I can't believe you can't see that.“ She immediately exhales a breath, seeming to calm herself down. She starts again, calmly this time but the look in her does not change. “Look Rae, I know you have a crush on Reign, it's written all over you but don't you find it weird that Reign is suddenly all over you?“ Her words strike me harder than I expected. I blink“Think about it, he's suddenly so attached to you like a moth to a flame. He's trying to make you beli
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)I try to concentrate on the task at hand, which includes ironing washed clothes in the laundry room with two of the staff members, but no matter what I do, my mind drifts back to Reign. He's like a doom fruit—sweet-looking but forbidden, if that makes any sense. He's stuck in my mind like a parasite. The way he looks at me makes my heart skip more beats than one, and the way his lips curve into a smirk whenever he talks dirty makes the butterflies in my stomach dance and heat run south.“Careful, you might burn yourself.”The unexpected voice beside my ear shakes a yelp out of me. I press hard on the iron, and it burns through the shirt. My eyes widen in terror, more at the ruined cloth than the cause of it.“Oh my God! What have you done?”Reign tsks, unimpressed. “It's just a shirt.”I throw him a glower, which he smirks at. “It's not just a shirt; this is worth my salary. You can't just sneak up on people working. What are you even doing here?”He used to
(REIGN'S POINT OF VIEW)“What brings you here, Liam?”I tap my way off the bed just as Liam walks into the room. I stroll over to where my coat was discarded and take out a packet of cigars, popping one into my mouth and lighting it up. I study the look directed at me. He looks like I've murdered his favorite pet.His jaw is clenched, and his eyes are venomous. It's a rare sight to see him this irked. I smirk.“I see that Mother was right. You sent that maid to seduce Grandfather just to gain his favor. I'd always believed you were better than that, Reign.”Raelynn. I test the name on my tongue just as an image of her pretty face and innocent eyes shining back at me, pressed against the bed, pops into my head. A tiny smile emerges on my face as I release a huff of smoke into the air. “I'd always thought you knew better than to listen to anything that comes out of your mother's mouth; she says one thing and does the other.”Liam's eyes narrowed. “Don't talk about Mother like that.”I s
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)"You might get burnt."I shudder at the sound of Reign's voice in my ear. These lines have been resonating in my thoughts for the past day. They make me shudder and want to run away in terror, yet they also draw me in like a magnet and entice me in ways I have never been tempted before. They're foreign; they've caused me a sleepless night because I've been tossing and turning in bed. The way he said it, how he said it, just gets me stuck. I understand the intent behind his words. I am playing with fire by becoming entangled in the chaos that is this family, yet I can not help but think of those words in a different light—a sexy one. As I stroll down the hall with a basket of laundry, a blush spreads across my face. But my journey is cut short when a shadow falls on me, and a figure blocks my path. When I raise my head, Mrs. Rachel is glowing in front of me. I pause. "Mrs. Rachel." I greet. She looks at me with soulless eyes, much like Mrs. Llia does. I re
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)There's another party going on at the mansion—the third one in a week. The estate is busy and bustling. Luckily, I'm not serving the guests because I'm taking care of Mr. Montgomery. The night is young, and I have already finished two books. “The end,” I read out loud and looked at him. I anticipated him to be sleepy and depleted, but his eyes only shone at me like a curious child. I beam. “Should we read another one, Mr. Montgomery?” He shakes his head. “I'm getting bored and tired. Tell me about yourself, Raelynn.” “There's nothing to tell, really,” I answer. My life is as dull and empty as a blank sheet. He doesn't respond, only looks at me to continue. I sigh. “I don't know who my parents are. I lived in the orphanage until I was old enough to leave and start a life of my own, and since then, I've been living every day hoping for a better day.” I shrug. My life is so dull.“Have you found a better day yet, Raelynn?” Again, I shrug. “Not yet, but I
(RAELYNN'S POINT OF VIEW)A day after the ordeal, I get cornered by Daphne. Her eyes are judging as she looks at me. “Tell me the truth, Rae, did you really sleep with the old man to get promoted?” My eyes boarden at the accusation, and my hands itch to slap her across the face. “What?” My hand clench into a fist by my side. She throws her hands in the air. “What do you want me to believe? That's what everyone is saying. The rumors have spread far and wide. If your parents were alive, do you think they would be happy to see their daughter shamelessly opening her legs for a man old enough to be her great-grandfather?”This time, I did not resist the urge and smacked her across the face. “I can expect everyone to judge and insult me, but not you, Daphne,” tears sting my eyes. She stares back flabbergasted, her hand on her face. “Did you just hit me?” she polls as if she can't believe it. “Did you just freaking hit me because I'm trying to talk sense into you for being a whore?” “I
