Chapter 4
Emma lay crumpled in the dirt, the cold ground pressing against her cheek. Everywhere was silent, only the sound of the bird and footsteps could be heard
Her body trembled as sharp pain spread through her ribs where someone had kicked her. She blinked slowly, trying to open up her eyes completely but the view she met made her shut her eyes down almost immediately.
“What do we do with her?” a rough voice said cutting through the silence of the environment. It came from one of the men standing over her, fear crept in and she wiggled praying inwardly for the ground to open up and swallow her.
“We should finish her off. She’s already half-dead,” Another voice answered, lighter but no less cruel.
Emma’s chest tightened. She wanted to speak, to plead, but her mouth felt dry, and every breath burned. She shifted slightly, and the pain shot through her like fire.
“No,” a third voice cut in sharp and desperate. “Why waste her? We could… you know, have a little fun first,” he titled his lips.
Emma’s stomach twisted as fear overtook her pain. Her lips moved, and she forced out a weak whisper. “Please… don’t.”
The chuckling stopped, and one of the men leaned closer. His breath was hot and foul against her ear. “What’s that? Are you begging already? Pathetic,” he slapped her across the cheeks.
Emma winced, trying to inch away, but her body refused to cooperate. She shut her eyes tightly, hoping it would all end soon.
The man moved to grab her arm, but before he could, a sharp command cut through the night. “Enough!”
The man who seemed like their leader stepped forward, his tall frame casting a shadow over Emma.
He looked down at her, his face unreadable. His voice was firm and left no room for argument. “Leave her alone. We don’t need this kind of trouble,” he shook his head in pity.
“But—” the younger man started, clearly unhappy.
“No!” The leader’s voice grew harsher. “If we do this, it’ll only bring heat on us. You want to get caught?” He asked and they all shook their head, stepping back one after the other.
They didn’t seem happy with the decision as they muttered in frustration.
The leader crouched down, his eyes scanning Emma’s battered face. For a moment, there was something almost like pity in his expression. He reached out, grabbed her arm roughly, and dragged her a few feet away.
“Go,” he said, his voice cold but final.
Emma’s body collapsed back onto the ground as he let go. She didn’t respond, couldn’t respond. The pain and exhaustion were too much. She heard their footsteps retreating and the faint sound of laughter as they disappeared.
When everywhere became quiet, Emma opened her eyes. Everywhere dim unlike before, every part of her body ached.
Her head throbbed, her vision blurred, but she knew she couldn’t stay there. If those men came back, or if someone else found her, she wouldn’t survive.
She pressed her palms against the dirt and tried to push herself up. Her arms wobbled under her weight, and she collapsed again. Tears stung her eyes, but she bit down on her lip and tried again. This time, she managed to crawl forward.
The ground was uneven, scraping against her knees and palms. Her breaths came in shallow gasps, and every movement felt like a battle. She didn’t know where she was going, only that she had to keep moving.
As she crawled, her mind raced. This place they had called it No Man’s Land. She’d heard of it before, whispered warnings about how dangerous it was. No rules, no safety, just chaos. She couldn’t stay here.
She moved forward, her focus narrowing to one thought; survival. She has to survive no matter what.
At some point, the dirt beneath her turned to gravel, and she realized she’d reached a road. It was wide and empty.
Emma stopped crawling and sat back on her heels, her body shaking with exhaustion. She wiped her face with a trembling hand, smearing dirt across her cheeks. The night was cold, and her thin clothes did little to protect her.
For a moment, she considered staying there, but the thought of those men, or others like them finding her pushed her to her feet.
Her legs wobbled, barely holding her weight, but she forced herself to take a step, then another.
The road felt endless and each step she took felt heavier than the last.
Her vision swam, and her breaths grew shallow. She stumbled, her knees buckling, but she caught herself before could she fall.
“No,” she whispered to herself. “I have to keep going.”
She tried to focus on the horizon, searching for any sign of safety. But then she heard it a low, guttural growl that sent chills down her spine.
She froze, and her body began to tremble. The growl came again, closer this time.
“Get her!” a voice shouted, sharp and angry.
Panic surged through her. Her body reacted before her mind could process what was happening. She turned and ran, her feet pounding against the gravel. Every step sent pain shooting through her body, but she didn’t stop.
The shouts behind her grew louder, joined by the sound of footsteps. She didn’t dare look back. The road ahead blurred, her vision narrowing to where she could dart so the people chasing her would miss her track.
She saw the lights before she saw the car. Blinded by panic, she didn’t slow down, didn’t think to look. She burst onto the road, her mind focused only on escape.
Before she could realize what was happening, a black car moved closer to her and she froze on a spot, her legs refused to raise nor move, it was as if she was under a spell.
Before she could think twice the car hit her and she stumbled on her body, her eyes shut down and everything became dark.
Emma opened her eyes with a start, feeling a sharp headache hitting her. Her eyes caught the environment she was in. Everything seemed blurred, but one thing didn’t fail her ears; the constant beeping of a machine. She tried to open her eyes fully, but they felt heavy. With a deep breath, she finally opened them. The white ceiling and the white walls were the first things that caught her sight. She breathed repeatedly, unable to comprehend what was happening or where she was.She tried to remember how she got there, but everything seemed blank. Whenever she tried to recall, everything seemed to collapse, and she suddenly felt a huge headache. She relaxed her body, closing her eyes in an attempt to calm herself. She could smell the scent of the room, it smelled of antiseptic.Confusion clouded her mind. How had she gotten here? She groaned softly, attempting to push herself upright, but the dull ache in her head made her falter. The door suddenly creaked open and a nurse walked inside,
The moment the man mentioned his name, Emma’s body shook. She didn’t know why a stranger would go out of their way to save her. She didn’t understand exactly why. The man looked genuinely helpful and genuinely happy for her.“Can you tell me the reason why you saved me, if I may ask?” she questioned, maintaining eye contact with the man.“Of course, I have no reason,” he replied. “I saw you stranded on the road, and that is why I decided to save you. I don’t have bad intentions toward you. You don’t have to stress yourself. All you have to do is keep your mind at peace. Recover quickly so we can leave the hospital. Or do you like staying at the hospital, sleeping like this?”The man asked, and Emma wiggled her head in response. Even though the man was a stranger, the way he communicated with her, the way he conversed with her, made her feel at ease. The doctor opened the door and stepped inside, his eyes smiling at Emma.“Are you two having a private conversation, or should I excuse m
Immediately after she set foot in the man’s house, Emma marveled at it. The house was beautiful, a big mansion with various types of decorations. Everything in the house seemed special and specific. The walls were painted white and decorated with gold accents. She stared at it as if she were in heaven. The man noticed her reaction and cleared his throat, gaining her attention. Emma quickly wiggled her head and shifted her focus to him.“You are welcome to my home. I hope you recover quickly,” the man said.“Yes, I hope so,” she replied. The man led her to an empty room and told her to rest properly while he went to the kitchen to prepare food for her.Emma was shocked and asked, “Can you cook?”The man smiled. “I’m not going to brag. I’ll prepare the food, and you can judge for yourself if I can cook or not.”Emma smiled back and said, “Okay, no problem.”The man gestured toward the bed before stepping out and closing the door. Emma stared at the door and muttered, “I hope this isn’t
A grand bouquet has been arranged in the pack. In order to maintain and talk about the pack territory, they invite different alphas from nearby packs to discuss the critical issues going on. Particularly, the rising threat of outside impacts from crossing the alphas’ bother. They arrange the hall greatly, everywhere boozed with energy, as packs leaders dressed in their finest attire. They fill the long wooden table that was set across the room. Their conversation was obvious in the air. Their laughter evident in the eyes. Some conversations were friendly. They talked and joked about parties that they attended, while some were tense with teasing. At the top of the table, Jayden and Kale stood at the head of the room. Their presence was commanding, and it was impossible to ignore. Jayden leaned against the table. His sharp eyes were scanning the crowd as if looking for any signs of trouble. Kale was beside him. His arms were crossed on his chest. His eyes sat in a straight, focused
Two nights later, Emily woke up with a start, sweat foaming out of her body. Her breath was Hitching as the remnant of the nightmare gripped her tightly. Her body trembled, her chest was heavy with the weight of fear. She wiped her damp forehead with shaky hands with a trembling voice, she tried to steady her racing heart, for the image replayed in her mind like a broken record. The dream had been unlike any other she would ever experience. She saw her former pack, the home she had once cherished, crumbling to the ground. The world’s majestic structure, the people’s echoes haunt her even now. Amidst the crowd, two wolves chased her relentlessly. Toward the end of the vision, she stood over the lifeless body of the pack-mates. Blood was staining her hands, and the faces she once cared for were frozen in pain and betrayal. She had done it herself, She killed them all.Her moist palm rubbed her hair as she screamed out loud, not even knowing what the sound echoed from her lips until sh
Emma is set on the long journey back to her parent’s house and her pack. The weight of her decision was pressing on her chest. The thought of finally returning home brought a rush of emotion through her body, a conflict that she could not quite place. She had been away for so long, and her mind was a storm of uncertainty. Would they welcome her back, or would they see her as a stranger? A lot of thoughts were roaming around her mind, but she kept her shoulders high, determined to go home. Even though she had told Damien not to worry about following her, he insisted saying he had made a promise and he must fulfill it. She has no choice but to accept. As they approached the outskirts of Emma's former home, the familiar scent of the woods and the remnants of old memories clung to her. It was comforting, but something about it felt so different. As though she no longer truly belonged here, she took a steady breath, pushed the unease that lingered and continued to move forward.Immediat
Ever wiped the tears that streamed down her cheeks after her father sent her back to her room. His father’s words echoed in her head. “Get the fuck out of here!” He had huffed and puffed. She had not expected to be scolded and dismissed so harshly, especially in front of Emma, who sat watching the scene unfold. Emma did not even bother to hide her amusement. This twist of fate was too perfect for her to handle. After all the sessions, she had endured Ever’s condescending behavior. Seeing her sister sent to her room in such a disgraceful way felt almost poetic. A chuckle escaped her lips, though she quickly composed herself when her father turned to face her.“Emma,” her father began, his tone softened as he regarded her. “Would you like to stay the night? Your mother will be pleased to see you tomorrow.”Emma hesitated for a second, glancing at Damien, who was sitting silently beside her. His expression was unreadable, but when their eyes met, Damien gave her a subtle nod of appro
The next morning, the sun streamed through the window curtain, casting a warm glow over the room as Emma stretched lazily on her bed. She was startled out of her sleep by the sound of a knock on her door. Before she could answer, her mother stopped stepping. Her face was beaming with joy. “Emma, you are finally home!” Her mother exclaimed, rushing forward to wrap her hand in a warm hug. Emma sat up, smiling lightly as she returned the embrace. “It is good to see you too, mom. I missed you so much!” she exaggerated. Her mom pulled back slightly, her eyes scanning Emma’s face. “You look exhausted. Did you rest well?” she questioned.Emma nodded, forcing her tone to remain as casual as she could. “As well as I could,” she replied. Her mother seemed satisfied with the answer and began talking about how much she had missed having her around. Emma, feeling the weight of the previous day’s events, gave that response with hope for life, carefully not letting any bitterness seep through her
“Damien?” Emma gasped in shock. “How did you get here?” she whisper-yelled. Her eyes turned wide with excitement and fear as she tried to move closer to Damien but one look from Tyler had her halting in her tracks.Damien didn’t share the same feeling of shock with Emma as his features remained stoic. Tyler watched him warily unable to determine if this werewolf was a threat to them or not.“I’ll explain everything, I promise” Damien revealed. “But first we have to get you out of here. Guards” Tyler called out. “Release them” he ordered just as two guards rushed in and did as instructed.Emma felt a rush of relief at being freed but Tyler still looked guarded. Damien must have ignored his expression because he was smiling the next second as he waved his hand in the air.“Come, you must follow me for we have a lot to discuss” Emma and Tyler exchanged looks before slowly trailing after Damien. The moment they stepped into the bright light Emma closed her eyes briefly. When she was fit t
Emma sat on the hard, frozen ground. Her arms wrapped around her knees, and her trembling fingers held them with a desperate fervor. Her eyes were red and puffed from all the hours of weeping watered in the darkness. The dungeon's oppressive silence was choking her like an unwanted blanket."Why are you crying again?" Tyler asked from across the room. His voice was casual, as if they weren’t locked in a dark cell beneath the earth. He was leaning against the wall, his legs stretched out in front of him.Emma exhaled slowly, using the back of her hand to wipe her nose. "Because we're in a dungeon, Tyler. We're trapped and this isn't funny. “Remind me again what it is?" Tyler asked, arching an eyebrow at her.Emma became red instantly and she glared at him so hard that Tyler burst out laughing. “This is awful, Tyler. This is very awful."Tyler let out a soft laugh this time around. "I know it is awful but It's not that bad. I've seen worse and this is still manageable."Emma glared at
Emma looked at Tyler. This was the second time he would be saying this to her but now he had mentioned, she didn't want to let go of it. Her eyes were serious now as she stepped closer to him."You said it again," she said."Said what?" Tyler answered. His voice was low and he made it obvious he knew what she was saying by not glancing at her.."Don't pretend as if you did not hear me," Emma said, giving him this look on her face. “You said it's your job to protect me. Do you know it is the second time you are saying this to me? Why do you keep saying that? Is there something I don't know?"Tyler rubbed the back of his neck nervously and turned away from her."It's nothing," he said. "Don't mind the words. It is just a normal word I think you understand."Emma shook her head. "I can't drop it. I want to know what you mean. It is not normal and I don't understand what it means. That is why I am asking you." She practically drawled the last words whilst glaring at him "It's not importa
Cinder? Tyler stood rigid as his muscles tensed visibly. ‘Why would Emma suddenly want to know about that now?’ He watched her curiously from beneath his lashes as different thoughts went through his head.“Did you hear what I just said?” Emma huffed impatiently. “Why are you so silent all of a sudden? Do you know what Cinder is? Why did those Faes call me Cinder?” she mumbled to herself.“It's nothing you should be concerned about. Let's go” Tyler said gruffly but Emma was as curious as ever and wouldn't take no for an answer. Her eyes flared with determination as she made her way in front of Tyler, blocking his path.“That means you do know something about this Cinder that you're not telling me. Just tell me already” she said as she let out a breath of exasperation.Tyler, sensing that Emma wasn't going to let the matter slide, released a heavy sigh and crossed his arms over his chest. He stared at her seriously. “Trust me, you don't want to know what Cinder is,” he assured. “But w
Emma woke up with a start as she glanced around quickly, scanning the environment for any threats. Seeing there was none, she inched closer to Tyler, her eyes filled with concentration as she checked on his wound.Blood had stopped rushing out and she heaved a sigh of relief. He had given her quite a fright last night after getting stabbed by one of their attackers. In her panic, she had smashed a stone over one of them but Tyler had already fallen unconscious. She glanced at the wound again. She had torn a piece of her cloth and used Tyler's shirt to cover the wound while she used her cloth to secure the cloth firmly to the wound. It wasn't the best first aid method but it'll have to do for now. She could only pray to the moon goddess to make Tyler regain consciousness soon so they could leave the forest.Though it was bright as day already and the morning sun seeping through the trees made it look less intimidating but the event of last night was still fresh in her mind and she sh
Emma was still contemplating what they meant by she was a cinder when they lounged at her. She screamed.“Please stop! Don’t hurt me!” she shouted again and again. But the figures didn’t stop. They laughed louder. One grabbed her arm and another pushed her to the ground.“Let go of me!” she cried. “Please, I didn’t do anything to you guys! Just let me go my way in peace!”One of them raised his hand and another pulled her hair.“She’s just a weak girl,” one said. "See, she can't even fight us,"“She smells strange. Maybe her blood tastes better,” another laughed.Emma shook her head. “No! Please! Please stop! Don’t hurt me! Please don't hurt me!” she tried bailing herself from whatever it is they think she was but it was all to no availThey didn’t care or listen to her pleas. They moved closer and they showed their teeth. Their eyes glowed. She closed her eyes, finally accepting fate. She covered her face with her hands and murmured her last prayerThen they came footsteps. It was v
Emma crossed the line and fell into the forest. The guards pushed her and she hit the ground. Her hands scraped the hard floor of the forest and her knees burned. Her hair covered her face.as tears rolled down her face, she sat there crying silently for a while. She looked back but there was no one, the guards were gone. The border was far away now. And the fire from the pack was no longer in sight. It was dark, very dark that it was hard to see herself in it.She stood up slowly but her legs shook, her arms trembled. She wiped her tears, but they came back again. She didn't know how she felt but she was so sad and weak. She was banished from her pack for something she didn't do, for a crime she didn't commit and the twins believed it, they had support in banishing her.Her parent's must have been ashamed of her not to show up. Damien must have felt disappointed or didn't want to interfere with the Alpha's decision to be left alone.“I’m alone,” she whispered. “Completely alone now, t
The night came finally when she was to be banished and the sky was dark. The air was cold and the whole pack stood near the big fire. Music was playing and the people clapped and smiled. They danced and laughed. They were not sad. It was a party. The party Luna was holding and had invited the whole pack to come celebrate with her.Luna stood at the front dressed in a shiny gown, she raised a glass and smiled at the people gathered around her.“This is for my son,” she said loudly. “Both of them are free now. No more pain and no more Emma.”The people cheered and they clapped again. Some howled and this made Luna smile more.“Tonight,” Luna said, “we end that chapter. We remove the curse from our lives and the lives of my son. We move on and forget she ever existed or meant anything to this pack and my sons.”At the same time, two guards pulled Emma out from the dark room she had been kept in.She was in chains and her hair was messy. Her feet dragged on the ground and her clothes were
“Please you have to help us, Alpha. Emma is innocent” the Sinclairs begged on their knees in the Alpha's office but he refused to budge.“Emma hasn't committed a crime. She didn't cheat on her mates. She is being framed,” Mrs Sinclair explained.“Mrs Sinclair, you seem to have a problem with my judgement," the Alpha observed as he watched her with a hardened expression on his face.“Too think we were almost in laws” he spat. He shook his head quickly, relieving himself of the memory. “Emma would be banished tonight and the kind guards behind you will escort you to her cell to say your final goodbyes”“Jayden, Kale please do something. Emma is innocent her father” begged but the twins suddenly released their aura, the intensity of it almost sucking the air of the Sinclairs.“Don't mention her name,” they growled. “Get out!” They glared at the guards who moved quickly and dragged Mr and Mrs Sinclair out of the office.Emma laid weakly in her cell, too exhausted to move. Since the guard
