/-Claire-/

I should have taken his threats seriously. Over the next three weeks, things have slowly begun to change.

It started with individuals who had no dealings with our company posting bad reviews about our skin therapy products.

I didn't know what to do because the lies were very creative and believable.

We thought that was all until investors started pulling out, and we received a lawsuit for Intellectual property theft.

Panicking could not even begin to explain my state of mind.

The remaining days were filled with sleepless nights. I had a lawsuit on my hands and if I followed up this legal fight, it would drain a lot of money from me.

Especially if I lost.

Which was very likely considering how stable and trusted Agingwell Corporation was. The craziest thing was that I didn't even know about this company until now.

Sure, we had the same goals and very similar products but I didn't think they would pick me out of a hundred others in the same business line.

And these attacks didn't even seem in any way related to L&V investments, but I could feel it in my bones that Regal had pulled a few strings to sabotage me.

Because how do you lay a threat and suddenly everything starts going downhill?

Even the companies that we partnered with were requesting to revoke the partnership. The only one who remained was rapidly running out of stock. I was breaking down and I didn't know what to do.

The company I was so happy to open a few weeks ago was on the verge of crashing if I didn't do something to stop it.

My staff were already getting worried and I could see it in their eyes and mannerisms that they were fast approaching their limits.

They had bills to pay and families to cater for and a crumbling business couldn't solve that.

I needed money and affluence and at that moment, there was only one person I could think of.

I could only hope I didn't end up in jail before I could lay my proposal.

/-Asher-/

I must amused and at the same time stunned.

I needed to know where this woman got her audacity from.

Here I was, overworking myself as usual to get my mind off my overbearing family when my secretary informed me that there was a woman waiting to see me.

I didn't think much of it as I granted her permission to usher her in, only to see the crazy female who robbed me in broad daylight.

Over the last few months, I have been intrigued by her growth and rising fame in the business world.

Her productivity was amazing and sometimes, I endorsed anonymous donations to her charity projects.

Most people would use that money to buy yachts and throw crazy parties, buy houses and cars and flaunt themselves all over social media.

Claire Peters was different and it was refreshing to watch.

But never in my wildest dreams did I imagine she would come back here, demanding more money.

“Mr Gray, I know what this looks like and I can only imagine the thoughts running through your mind right now, but I'm begging you to listen to me,” she pleaded.

I loved the fire of determination I saw in those pretty eyes of hers.

“Oh, I am,” I leaned back against my seat. “Go ahead and convince me not to have you arrested this instant.”

I had no intention of doing that, but I wanted to shake her up a bit, and I liked the glint of fear that graced those eyes.

“I know it looks bad. I did a terrible thing, yes but I want to assure you that I never intended to run forever. I was going to pay you back when I was financially buoyant,” she said.

“I don't believe you,” I stated. “Maybe you can explain better to the cops.”

“No, please,” she said quickly. “If you arrest me now, you are going to completely ruin me and your money will go to waste.”

“I see…”

“All I'm asking for is a little time and money,” she clasped her hands in desperation. “Lend me fifty million and I will pay back double of every dime I owe you.”

I kept all emotions off my face, offering her a blank expression.

“You want me to lend you money after you stole from me?” I arched a brow.

“I mean, I could have broken into one of your cars to take another suitcase, but I didn't,” she shrugged, and my lips twitched in amusement.

“No, Miss Peters. I will not lend you any more money, and you are going to pay back every dime you owe me,” I stated.

“Look, I can give an account of everything I spent your money on. I run charity organisations, foundations for women and abused children, and restaurants and recently, I started a company, PrimeCsre Innovations. It deals with ageing population services and eco-friendly baby products. I managed to pull in a few investors and partnerships on the night I commissioned it,” she explained and I listened with rapt attention.

“But recently, someone has been trying to sabotage me, and I am on the verge of losing everything. I know I have no right to cry over stolen money but I put in a lot of time and effort into these establishments. Now I have a lawsuit in my hands for something I know absolutely nothing about. Please help me, Asher. You're my only hope,” she pleaded.

Something in me tugged.

“Let's say I decide to buy your story, what's in it for me?” I asked.

“Up to seventy percent profit on all your investments. The company has potential, believe me, and if we save it, we are going to have a long-term turnover of amazing profits, plus twice the money I owe you,” she answered.

“Sounds like a good deal. But that’s not enough.” I paused.

“What else do you want?” She asked.

“I’ll satisfy you with my best effort.” She added desperation written all over her face.

“You.” I informed her.

I watched her eyes widen in shock.

“I want you to be my wife and the limitation will be one year. I’ll be your backhold during this time. Let’s see how high a position you can reach.”I stopped, “And the game begins… now!”

Claire.“I want you to be my wife.”His words hit my ears like a missile, making my perceived self-confidence falter. I felt blood drain from my cheeks and I blinked rapidly, still trying so hard, but failing to process his words. Be his wife? I swallowed the huge discomforting lump lodged in my throat.“Miss Peters, are you okay? You suddenly look like you've seen a ghost. No, I feel like I'm the one looking at a ghost.”I didn't need a mirror to know my skin had gone pale. I literally felt the blood seeping out with every labored breath. I watched his lips tilt into a small smile as he interlocked his fingers. His hands formed a steeple on his table, and he laid his jaw on it. His eyes twinkled, more like he was amused or proud of the game he was playing. It was all a game to him, wasn't it? He knew how desperate I was for his help, and he'd stoop as low as asking for my hand in marriage in addition to a whopping 70% profit on all investments.“Have you suddenly lost your ability to

AsherI looked at my watch. It has been hours since she left but I couldn't get my mind off our little encounter. As much as I had pretended to be in control, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or even saying. It felt as if my words and actions were guarded by a primal need to own her. I scoffed. I had tracked her all these while and immediately I had the opportunity, I had pounced on it like a hungry wolf.I swiveled my chair, wondering what she must have thought of me to throw a marriage proposal at her. What was more shocking was her reaction. She went pale, almost as if she had received bad news. Most ladies would have jumped on the opportunity to marry me—most would jump into my bed if they had the chance. But she was different. I didn't know there was a woman who didn't care about my status or money. I had to change that somehow. I stood up from my chair and headed home.It was a short thirty minute dr

ClaireI stepped out of the car, slightly pulling my jacket closer and wishing it could generate more warmth than it already did. I let out a deep, calming breath through my lips. Things weren't going exactly the way I planned, so the least I could hope for was to be in charge of the outcome. Two days earlier I didn't even have a boyfriend, but here I was about to sign away my life to a man for one year. The end determines the means, I told myself. I just needed to ensure that he broke up with me before one year and I'd be free and would have also made tons of profits.I reached his waiting room and was greeted by his secretary. She was a petite woman who looked like she was in her mid thirties. Blonde, hazel eyes and a voice that was so high-pitched, I checked if there were any broken glasses. After a little while, her telephone rang and she smiled and gestured to me to enter. With a broad smile, I entered Asher's office. A man sat on a chair across from him. Their gazes both glued o

Asher “Damn paperwork,” I cursed as I signed yet another document. It had been a tiring day with little to look forward to. I eyed the bottle that sat in the bar just opposite my work table. It was tempting, but my damned heart could only take so much. “Fuck the doctors,” I muttered as I stood and walked over to the bar. I picked up the bottle and looked at its label, Domaine De La Romanee Conti. I sighed and dropped the bottle back in the bar. It should be a crime to have this at home when I couldn't even drink to my satisfaction. My phone buzzed, and I walked back to my table. The caller ID read: Jenny. It was the red hair I was with a couple of months ago. For some reason, she wouldn't stop calling. Something about not being able to get me out of her mind. I scoffed. It was always about the money—I gave up on love when I made my first billion. It had become clear that I was never going to find anyone who really loved me. Not that I was interested in love or any woman; at least, un

ASHER I was certain that my gaze lingered on her for a minute longer than necessary. I didn't bother being conscious about it. I didn't care that it was obvious I had been staring. How could I not? The red dress that I had licked up for her looked absolutely amazing. I couldn't help but notice that the color of her lips matched her dress, and it brought out the edge in her eyes. My gaze lingered on her lips for a little bit longer. What the hell are you even doing? I blinked in surprise. The plan was to entertain myself by getting under her nerves, not to imagine devouring her on this very table. My heart instantly picked up pace at the thought. I was more surprised than disgusted that I was even considering the idea in the first place.I observed as she tipped her head back, taking a big gulp of wine from her glass. Even though her hand was sloppy, there was some sort of elegance and grace in her movement. “Really? You'd rather be drunk than have a conversation with me?” I raised

AsherI looked at the beauty seated opposite me. The ambience in the restaurant accentuated the look in her eyes. It appeared like her eyes might snap shut at any moment. If it did... I didn't want to think of what would happen then. I cleared my throat and clapped, signaling to the waiter who stood at the entrance to the kitchen. The fine lines etched in his face were now a little rough. His eyes had turned red—probably because of the sleep I had deprived him of. He fought the urge to let out a yawn as he walked over to me.He leaned in and asked, “How can I help you, Mr. Asher?" Although his words suggested that he wanted to be of service to me, his demeanor and the slight lilt in his voice suggested a repressed annoyance. But he knew better than to voice his discontent; it could as well cost him his richest customer. “The bills,” I said in a snarky manner. “Just a moment, sir.”I turned away from him and looked at the only person who had ever managed to capture my attention for m

Claire.I drifted in and out of consciousness, as I found it difficult to keep my eyes open. I let out a slight moan as I shifted in the lush leather of the car seat. For some reason, I cling onto Asher's hand like my life depended on it. His scent wafted into my nose and rivaled the intoxicating alcohol coursing through my blood. I snuggled closer to him—his warmth and tender touches were something I hadn't experienced in a long while—I didn't even experience it with my ex-husband. I tried to think about a time when Grant ever loved me or showed me affection. Did he ever love me? It always seemed like he wanted me for other reasons, none of which was love. I remember the dead look in his eyes while I labored and fought for my life. “He just stood there.” I whispered as tears poured down my face and dripped onto Asher's shirt. He stiffened at first, then wrapped his hand around me. “He watched me while I drew closer to death,” I sobbed.“Who's he?” Asher whispered, tightening his gri

Claire I looked around the room in a state of frenzy. There was no one, nothing but the vast expanse of space across the luxurious bedroom. My heart pounded frantically within the confines of my chest. I looked down at the shirt that I had on my body. It smelled..like him. My face paled instantly at the sight. I could almost hear the blood rushing in my ears. Without thinking, I shifted the duvet away from my bare thighs. The moment I heard the door opening, I swung around almost immediately. Asher stood by the door, shirtless, with a tray in his hand.I tried not to let my gaze travel down the length of his magnificent body in awe. What the hell are you even doing? You were upset just a few seconds ago. Our eyes lingered on each other for a moment, and all I could do was stare blankly.I could feel the words gathering on the tip of my tongue, but for some reason I was unable to utter them. CLAIREAsher had this way of making me feel like the only person in the world. It was the little things—the way his hand hovered near mine like he was ready to catch me at any second or the way he smiled like he knew a secret no one else did. It was comforting, almost addictive, and I found myself wanting it more and more. When we left the coffee shop, the city seemed alive in a way I hadn’t noticed before. Maybe it was the buzz of morning activities—people moving around, talking, going about their days. Or maybe it was Asher walking next to me, his hand brushing against mine every so often, sending little sparks of electricity through my skin.“Where to first?” I asked, glancing up at him.“You’ll see,” he said with a sly grin.Of course, he didn’t tell me. Asher loved a good surprise, and while it usually annoyed me, today I decided to let him take the lead.We ended up at a small flower market tucked into a corner of the city that I had never explored. CLAIRERegal was becoming a thorn in the flesh. I couldn't think of any way to get him to stop bothering Asher and I. The more that I tried to get him to stay away. The more he would keep coming back to prove a point and I was getting extremely tired of entertaining his antics. How could I not see that he has been such a pain when I married him. I closed my eyes and sighed.I shivered when Asher ran a finger over my bare arm tenderly. My gaze met his. Somehow, he had been awake and I didn't even know it. He had a way of taking his time to observe me before I became aware.“Whatever is bothering you. It's best you tell me so that I can take care of it,” he said softly. But then I still couldn't find the courage to bring up Asher. Bringing him up is going to ruin the mood completely and I wasn't so sure that I could have that. Regal had already caused so much tension between us. I wasn't going to let him ruin the morning too. “Nothing. Just thinking about the pile of work that I had

CLAIREI toweled off quickly, feeling the residual heat from the bath clinging to my skin. Asher's gaze lingered on me with a mixture of affection and intensity, which had me fighting a blush that I knew was already creeping up my neck. He wrapped his towel around his waist, his eyes never leaving mine. Back in the bedroom, I watched as Asher moved with ease, the muscles in his back flexing as he reached for clothes. For a moment, I just stood there, taking him in—the effortless confidence in his movements, the way the faint light caught on his skin. I found myself unable to look away."You're staring," he said without turning, but there was a hint of a smile in his voice, as if he had been watching me and not the other way around."You're too smug for your own good," I shot back, rolling my eyes to hide the flush creeping up my neck. "Maybe put on a shirt before your ego inflates."He turned around, one eyebrow raised. "So you admit you were enjoying the view?""Maybe I was just adm

CLAIRE“So what's in it for her?” Asher asked after a few seconds of silence.“That's the thing,” I told him, “I have no idea, and I can't seem to figure it out.” “That's very strange...and suspicious. Liah wanting to help someone for no reason? That's practically impossible, to be honest. The Liah I know wouldn't be caught dead doing someone a favor without getting a single thing in return.” He went back to massaging my scalp. It was more of him running his fingers absentmindedly through my hair while he spoke than it was a massage. "Well, I don't think it's for no reason. She kind of said she might be doing this for you when I asked what she would get out of it.” “Oh, that definitely sounds more believable. So what exactly did she ask for?”My body tensed up a little bit as I thought of answering his question, and he seemed to notice. “Anything wrong? You seen tense. What did Liah tell you?” He placed a hand on my shoulder gently, and I started to feel slightly relaxed. Then I r

CLAIREThe proximity between us evaporated as he clutched my face tenderly in his hands. My breathing heightened. I was still trying to recover from the heat of his kiss. I was drowning in the heat that threatened to consume me. My hands were on fire as soon as I realized they were still placed across his torso. It was impossible to concentrate. “I've been waiting for you all day. I thought you were going to take forever to get back home. Get back home to me,” his voice drifted into a whisper as he placed his head against mine.I closed my eyes. My heart was threatening to give way from my body. I couldn't breathe, but it was a good kind of discomfort. “I've been thinking about you all day too. I-” I paused as my eyes watered with tears. I was terrified that Asher was going to see me in a more vulnerable state than he has ever seen me in his life. I wondered if it was the right time to be vulnerable with him. I closed my eyes. I needed to breathe. I need to pause every negative thou

CLAIREIt was a good thing that I had a very firm practice of keeping my temper on a leash. The sight of Liah seated comfortably on the chair from across made me want to lung out in frustration. I was exhausted from feeling so many intense emotions in a day. Everything about her irritated me, right from the sight of her perfect legs to the cold, sassy smile on her face. My headache intensified and I inhaled deeply to at least regain composure because my anger was already beginning to rise to the surface. “I'm not sure I'm going to need your forgiveness for anything. I'm also certain that you're imposing on my private time. So if you're done spewing your BS. You can as well leave my office,” I said. I gave myself a mental pat on the back for sounding unbothered.I could have almost sworn that I saw irritation flash through her eyes, and when I looked again, the same smug smile still remained on her face. When she remained on the chair, making no attempt to move, I raised an eyebrow a

CLAIREI couldn't stop thinking about the look in Asher's eyes. Every inch of my body awakened each time my mind went to it. It was impossible to do anything else. Every inch of my body awakened each time I thought about how he confessed that he couldn't keep his hands off me. I knew that the both of us were on a tough path, but at least it was another sign to stay hopeful.I closed my eye and got out of the car almost immediately. I needed to stop thinking about Asher for the time being. I wasn't going to be able to attend to all that I had to today if I kept on thinking about his bare torso. As I headed closer to my office, dread engulfed me. This was certainly not the day where I had the mental capacity to tolerate Asher. I closed my eyes and sighed, and I breathed with relief when I spotted no one waiting for me by the door. I closed my eyes and sighed. It was indeed a great relief. “Good morning, miss. I've been expecting you,” Ella smiled at me. I wasn't really in the best of

CLAIREMy eyes fluttered open as I sensed Asher's warmth. I wanted to believe that JH was a figment of imagination, and it could easily be my mind conjuring up things since I craved his presence so much. I closed my eyes, sighed, and turned to face Asher’s empty bedside. His scent became stronger. My eyes flew open, and my lips parted open in surprise as my eyes caught his. I don't know how long he's been awake. My cheeks flushed with color as I thought about how long he might have been watching me. He was here, and somehow I wanted to believe that it was a figment of my imagination. After what happened yesterday, I was convinced that it would only be a matter of time before he let me know that he wanted nothing to do with me. “Hi,” he said quietly.I closed my eyes. Somehow the words were stuck on the tip of my tongue. Somehow I couldn't even come up with the right thing to say. My heart was soaring wildly within the confines of my chest. Hope. I felt it a lot of times to recogni

CLAIRERegal’s words haunted me. The taunting look in his eyes was something that I wasn't sure that I would be able to forget. I was certain that the universe had sent him to haunt me. I was more than certain that was the case.I closed my head and sighed. I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was right. I couldn't keep running from the truth forever. I closed my eyes and sighed. It was becoming more and more difficult to ignore the lump that was beginning to form at the back of my throat. The more I tried to focus, The more the anxiety swept up the remaining thread of composure that I had left. Wasn't he supposed to be in prison? Wasn't he supposed to be facing law charges. Regardless of whether he was supposed to be in prison or not, it didn't divulge from the fact that I was supposed to tell Asher the truth.I wanted to go to bed and preferably not wake up the next morning, but I couldn't keep running away forever. “Hey,” my attention reverted back to the present moment as As
