At the start, there was only Alexis. Like all of us, she had dreams. But she was just a girl. Not a princess, not a model, she wasn’t special. Only she was special. She just didn’t know it yet. Her parents were nice and so were her siblings. The only thing that made this girl stand out was that she got along with almost everyone. She was never rude unless provoked and never disliked anyone without good reason. In a word, she was Sweet. But in her world sweet didn’t get you very far, so she often went unnoticed. The girl didn’t mind though. Being left to herself meant she could do things like read, draw, and write. She loved to write. Though sometimes writing was something she had to do. You see the girls’ imagination was bright, colorful, and active, that often meant she had a hard time falling asleep. And every once in a while, her dreams would wake her up and the only way she could go back to sleep was if she wrote down what she had dreamt about.
In her time alone, she had written many short stories and hundreds of poems. They came so easily to her. It was almost as if the words would just come floating in front of her eyes. All she had to do was put them on paper and then she hid them. She had a special place where she kept all of her writing; a place that no one else would ever find. Because in her world only royalty and very highly educated people were allowed to write; and that was the way it had always been. Not everyone agreed with this law but everyone followed it. The girl really had no reason to hide her writing. There was no penalty for writing only for publishing. And as we said before the girl was not a princess, or any royalty at all, and she was too young to have the education that was needed. No, she hid her writing because she was afraid someone might enjoy it so much that they would try to have it published; and that would be a disaster. So, she kept to herself and wrote when she was alone and no one knew of her gift; except for her English teachers. They of course had glimpses of what her imagination was capable of. They often looked forward to their poetry and essay assignments when it came to her. They knew this girl had talent and that one day, if she kept to her studies, she would be a very successful writer. But as much as she loved to read and write she hated school much more. She felt that education could only take you so far, and that life’s little experiences were what really mattered.
One day the girl was with her friend who loved to gaze at the stars. He loved it so much that he would often sneak onto his roof while everyone was asleep. Just so he could be alone and forget about everything but the stars. He loved the stars like she loved to write and because they each had something they loved so much they were best friends. She would often sneak up onto his roof with him so that they could just be with each other in the quiet beauty. He would lie on his back and gaze up while she would sit beside him and write. When they were on the roof they never spoke. They talked at school and when they went on little trips together but never on the roof. Most people thought she was his little sister, or some little girl he took pity on and let follow him around. No one seemed to understand their friendship, which didn’t bother them at all. But the others didn’t like it. He was royalty and of age to be married and she was just a common girl about 4 years younger than him. He was just as kind as the girl though, so their families understood the bond that they shared; and never tried to keep them apart.
“Alexis, Alexis? Yo! Havens to Alexis!” said Kar.
“Huh? Oh, sorry Kar, what were you saying?” replied Alexis.
“Never mind, it wasn’t that important. Where were you?” asked Kar.
“Right here, I never moved.” said Alexis.
“No, what were you thinking about?” Asked Kar.
“Oh. The usual, homework, the new book I’m reading, sleep.” said Alexis.
“Not sleeping again?” asked Kar.
“Do I ever?” asked Alexis.
“Actually, yes you do. You fall asleep on the roof all the time.” said Kar.
“Yeah well we haven’t been on the roof in a while!” Alexis said.
“I know. But the storms should clear out soon.” Kar said.
“Can’t wait to shut me up huh?” asked Alexis.
“Lex, you know better than that. I enjoy being around you because you talk.” said Kar.
“Kar, it was a joke. Don’t take things so seriously.” said Alexis.
“I knew it was a joke. It just wasn’t a funny one. And besides that, I don’t need to get you on my roof for you to be quiet, lately you don’t talk at all.” said Kar.
“I talk.” said Alexis.
“Yeah, only when I start crap with you. It’s like pulling teeth! What’s wrong?” asked Kar.
“Nothing is wrong. I’m tired! You know I don’t talk as much when I’m tired.” said Alexis.
“It’s more than that. I’ve known you since we were kids. And I know it’s not just you being tired.” said Kar.
“Yeah well, even if there was something else I’m not gonna tell you. You’re a boy.” said Alexis.
“Great we’re gonna start this again?” asked Kar.
“I guess so.” said Alexis.
“Fine! Call me when gender doesn’t matter anymore!” yelled Kar.
“U huh.”, shrugged Alexis.
Gosh, I wish Kar could understand. It’s because he’s a guy that I can’t tell him. Stupid boys, think they can fix everything. If he only knew the dreams I’d been having lately; then he might understand, but I can’t tell him. He’d freak out and take me to the doctor. He’d probably even say “Don’t worry Lex, we can fix this, you’ll be all better soon, I promise!” If he only knew, I’m pretty sure you can’t fix my problem. But one thing's for sure, I can’t fall asleep around him. If I have one of those dreams around Kar I’d die of embarrassment! And he’d probably think I was gross or sick or both.
So, Alexis went home to find herself alone once again. She did her homework and then she read until she couldn’t keep her eyes open any longer. She shut off her light and put on her night clothes and went to sleep. As Alexis lay in bed waiting for sleep to take her, she thought of Karsix and of how they would lie next to each other on the roof, and how Karsix would hold her as she drifted off to sleep. They had stopped trying to hide it from their parents when they snuck out to the roof and fell asleep. Now they only kept quiet so they wouldn’t wake anyone.
Alexis was always full of energy the next day. Her core would shine brighter and her eyes would glow the deep brown Karsix had grown to love. She was a rare Haven child. Deep brown eyes, fire red hair, alabaster skin with the faintest of freckled specks. Red hair usually went with tan skin and green or blue eyes were more prominent than brown. Yes, Alexis was rare indeed, right down to her petite frame. Her short stature was the reason everyone thought she was so much younger than Karsix. He was very tall, tan skin, black hair, and blue eyes. Whenever they were in a hurry Karsix would put Alexis on his back. It had always been this way for Alexis and Karsix. And they both had said they hoped they would never change. But change is exactly what Alexis felt was coming; for her anyway. Once a Haven child turned 21 they were done physically aging. And Karsix had just celebrated his 21st birthday a couple of months ago. Alexis was only 17 and knew that she still had 4 more years of change to come. She didn’t mind it though; as long as she got to spend it with Karsix. And it was thoughts like that, that she couldn’t tell Karsix. When it came to marriage the women chose the men. And Alexis knew that being a common girl meant she was to choose a common boy. Though it was not forbidden for a common girl to choose a royal boy, it was looked down upon. The woman that chose above her station and got the man of her choosing was said to be a witch and the man was under her spell. If the woman chose above her station and didn’t get the man then she was said to be greedy. Both things were very bad and Alexis knew this. Alexis’ grandmothers had both chosen above there stations and gotten the men of their choosing. Most had just dismissed them as being witches and left it at that until Alexis was created. Being so rare and having witches for grandmothers made people wonder. Of course, the royal family saw this as a sign of change. And so, they kept Alexis and her family very close. Commoners didn’t normally associate with royalty until they were married. The King and Queen oversaw every marriage in their territory and no one was ever denied. Divorce was a word they did not know. Once you were married it was for life and death. And no other could or would come between a married couple.
As Alexis slept she dreamed of Karsix. They were watching a meteor shower. Karsix had his arms around Alexis as she tried to keep her eyes open. But inevitably they shut and she was sound asleep in his arms. A dream within a dream was always how it happened. Not Alexis anymore but Aeden and Karsix was now Dean. They were no longer on the roof of the castle but in the bedroom; on their bed looking out the glass roof above. His arms were still around her but it was different. They were different. Their bodies were full of masses and the energies didn’t exist. And their eyes looked as if they had never slept. But the feel of his body against hers was still the same. As was the way he spoke. But it was more tender, less like a brother and more like a husband. They were still watching the meteor shower only Aeden had a thing called a “video camera” in her hands. Dean said that she should write a story to go with the video, like a documentary. Aeden had told Dean he was the Director/Producer/Actor not her. And they had both laughed. After the “show” they went into a large room called a “kitchen” and prepared food that they ingested.
Alexis knew all the names of things because she was Aeden in this life. So, in this life – like dream she never questioned Dean about these abnormal practices. And each dream always ended with Aeden in Dean’s arms under covers in a very soft bed. When Lex would wake she would immediately look in the mirror to check her eyes and at her chest to make sure her energy still shone brightly. You see where Aeden had a solid form that was full Lex had a hollow form with only the bright ball of energy in the middle of her chest. Her bones were metal cushioned by several layers of living silicon, that formed the necessary parts to either be male or female, with skin stretched over top. “Birth” was a word Lex only knew because of Aeden. In Haven a person was created. But their energy was formed in a similar way to Aeden’s blood. Lex’s parents took a bit of their energies and fused them together to form Lex’s energy. Once it was placed inside Lex’s chest she was then zapped with another kind of energy, and the 3 energies together formed her life force. Like Aeden’s DNA, Lex’s Energy was completely unique to her.
Every time Lex had one of these dreams she would write it in her journal and store it away. And in each dream, she would learn something new and different about Aeden and Dean. This time she learned their professions and how they re-energized their unique bodies. They were so different from Lex and Kar and yet so similar. Kar was royalty but also an entertainer that loved the stars. Lex was a writer and so was Aeden, only Aeden could share her writing freely and profit from it. Something Lex longed for and yet knew would never happen. That was the one thing she enjoyed about the dreams most. Well that and Dean, to be so close with him and have no worry or reservation about it. The love they shared she longed for as well.
Kar was watching TV and waiting for the weather report. But his mind was on Lex. More than usual he wished she would just tell him what was wrong. He really hated it when she kept things from him, but he understood. After all their years of friendship, how could he not understand her? She always had a purpose for what she did. Even when she didn’t even know what that purpose was. But that had always been her way. It still aggravated him though. Kar understood Lex better than anyone and she still wouldn’t talk to him. He knew all he would have to do was hint to her parents that something might be wrong and she would agree to talk to him to get them to leave her alone. But this time seemed different. This time Lex was deliberately keeping something from him. Why? She’s never kept something from everyone, least of all him
So, what now? Do I just let this keep going and wait for Kar to marry someone else or do I tell him how I feel and wait to see what he says? Lex was now more confused than ever and Kar was the last person she could go to about it. So, Lex did what she always does and put her journal down, shut off the light, and tried to go back to sleep. But this time it was different. She woke up as Aeden. “Can’t sleep again. God, I hate this. And I’m freaking sweating again, Dammit! What is going on?” So Aeden got up to check the thermostat. It was at 65, there was no reason for her to be this hot. And of course, Dean was bundled up. So, she knew for sur
“Well it’s about damn time.” She told her reflection. That was odd but at the same time very helpful. I think it’s time I talked to Kar. I miss him and well, Aeden said if he’s anything like Dean he’ll love me no matter what. Now to find something to wear. As Lex went through her clothes she didn’t hear the voices downstairs. Or the footsteps coming towards her room. Just as she was done washing she heard the light knock on her door. She called, to who she thought was her mother, to let her know she was dressing and would be out in a minute. The voice that responded startled Lex so much that she tripped and fell onto her bed with a very lou
Shex and Mera were outside and around the corner so they saw Lex and Kar leave together. They turned and smiled at each other, knowing that they would be alright. But they still needed to get to the Hall of Records so that they could research Lex’s dreams to find a connection between them and her energy drain. They talked amongst themselves and decided that they also needed to figure out if Kar was having dreams as well and if he was, why they weren’t draining his energy. At the Hall of Records, they searched for hours to find the right scrolls. Once they had it took another couple of hours to find the scroll that talked about the dreams. There were at least 6 different scrolls that mentioned the dreams and 12 more that went more into depth about the dreams and the dreamers. They decided to divide the scrolls that had the most information about the dreamers. Shex had the two that talked about the “Male Descendant” and Mera had the two that talked about the “Female Descendant
Lex and Kar didn’t notice their mothers or much of anything as they walked in silence. Lex was trying to figure out what to say to Kar and Kar was letting her figure it out. He owed her that much. He had been horrible to her and he needed to make it up to her. As he was thinking of ways to make her happy with him again an idea started to form. Maybe now was the time to tell her about his dreams and then she would share hers. It might make things better and show her that he does care for her. So instead of heading to the castle and the roof Kar changed directions and headed for the stables. Riding always made Lex relaxed and happy. Lex noticed Kar’s new direction and smiled to herself. He was taking her riding; he only did this when he wanted to talk without anyone else around. He would hopefully take her to her favorite spot. She missed being there with him. She had been there a few times without Kar and it just wasn’t the same. She could almost smell the grass, feel the wat
Well, this is it. You’ll finally get to learn how to fix a car. And not just any car, a 1964 ½ Ford Mustang, swoon. As she approached the garage door her hand shook a little. She had been dreaming of taking this class since she first saw a mustang. Having her dad fill her head with stories of fixing and racing sports cars himself only added to her longing to learn. It was a way to feel closer to him again. Upon walking through the door way, she noticed the Professor/Mechanic sitting at a desk full of parts. There were guys at different ends of the garage, all working on different projects. She looked at her course paperwork again to find the Professors name and then walked over to him.
Aeden, Brenda, Jake, and Tess were standing in front of the Astronomy class waiting for the door to be opened. Aeden was leaning against the rail with her back turned to the corridor, Jake was standing directly in front of her, Tess had her back against the railing facing Brenda. This is how they would usually huddle in their little group. As they were talking Jake got very distracted by something behind Aeden. Aeden elbowed Brenda and Tess, they all looked at Jake and then Brenda and Tess looked behind them. They all just stood there gawking. So Aeden finally turned around to see what had their attention. And there he was, Dean Ibario, walking up to their group. Aeden rolled her eyes and turned back around. Brenda, Jake, and Tess all noticed how Aeden seemed to have no interest, which of course piqued their interest. “Not cute enough?” Jake asked. “Too cute?” Tess asked. “Do you know him?” Brenda asked. “That’s Dean Ibario from my mechanics class. Th
“Hey Aeden, Dean’s watching you.” Jake said. “He is not. He’s probably just trying to remember where he parked his car.” Aeden said. “You’re kidding right? He stayed right next to you the whole time he was with our group. He looked like leaving your side was painful when he had to go talk to Chase’s group.” Tess said. “And even then, he kept looking up every once in a while, to see where our group was.” Brenda said. “I think you guys are reading way too much into this. He may have been near me all night but all he talked about was the lecture and the assignments that would be based on tonight.” Aeden said. “Then why is he walking this way like he’s got something on his mind and he only wants to talk to you about it?” Brenda said. “U huh sure.” Aeden said as she rolled her eyes. “Hey, Aeden, can I talk to you for a minute?” Dean asked as he walked up to the group. “Sure.” Aeden said as she turned to see her friends givin
Lex sighed and ate another apple before explaining. “The first time I was able to communicate with Aeden was when she looked into a mirror and saw my reflection. It scared her and she asked who the hell was I. At that point I realized I couldn't hear her thinking like I usually did and that she was actually talking to and seeing me. Since that time, we have talked to each other through a mirror. The first time Kar talked to Dean was also through a mirror, earlier today.” “Oh.” Shex and Mera said. They looked as if they were fascinated and scared all at the same time. “What's wrong?” Lex asked. “Nothing.” They both said. “Really? You know we can tell when you two are hiding something from us right?” Kar said. “And that it upsets me when you do.” Lex added. With a long look and a sigh Mera finally said, “There has been nothing in the Histories about being able to See your Other. We aren't even sure how they communicated with
“I think Karsix was trying to contact me again before you went into the bedroom.” Dean said. “Oh really? Maybe I should try to contact Lex and see what was up?” Lex asked. “Yea. You see if she knows what he wanted, if not I'll try to get a hold of Kar.” Dean said. So Aeden went into the bathroom to see if she could talk with Lex. “Lex, I need to talk to you.” Aeden said to her reflection. Lex felt the familiar nudge and quickly went up to her bedroom to find a mirror. “I Aeden.” Lex said holding the hand mirror up and looking at Aeden. “HI. How are you feeling?” Aeden asked. “Good, you?” Lex asked. “I'm good, tired but you know, Dean said he talked to Kar today.” Aeden said. “Yea, Kar told me. Is Dean ok? I know it was hard for both of us when this started.” Lex said. “He's good. He was wondering why Kar wanted to talk to him earlier? We needed some alone time.” Aeden said smiling. “Oh, Kar just wanted t
“So, what do I say next time he, Kar, talks to me? And do you know when Lex is there?” Dean asked Aeden. “I’m not really sure. He should definitely apologize first and it needs to be sincere. It can’t just be an ‘I’m sorry I fucked up but I don’t really know why.’ And yes, I know when Lex is there.” Aeden said. “How? How do you know when she is there?” Dean asked. “It’s like a weird nudge in my brain. Not a headache or pressure or anything. It’s really hard to explain…………. It’s kind of like when you touch my temple, its light but it’s on the inside.” Aeden explained. “Huh, I don’t think I’ve ever felt anything like that before. I also wasn’t trying to feel it though.” Dean said. “Well, maybe you should pay more attention.” Aeden said. She could feel the anger rising again. This was the one part of the pregnancy that had been hardest. She didn’t mean to get mad or cry or fall asleep at random times. It just kept happening; the doctor said it wa
OK, what did Lex say again? When Aeden looked in the mirror while she was “there” she could talk to her. Alright dude, go look in the mirror. I really, really need to talk to you. Come on!! Drink another, what is that? Beer, huh, I like it. Drink another one and then go to the bathroom. It’s on commercial now go take a piss. Now lookup!!! “Dean, dude you gotta help me.” Kar said. “What the Fuck!!” Dean said. “OK, I’ll give you the short version. We are connected, I’m not sure how but basically, I’m you in a different world. Like a parallel universe. Are wives are also. Lex told me that she and Aeden talk this way so I figured it would work the same with us. Sorry to spring this on you man but I need your help.” Kar explained. “I think I’ve had too many.” Dean said and splashed some water on his face. “No, you haven’t, trust me, I know how this sounds but if you ask your wife after we talk then you’ll understand.” Kar said. “OK, I’ll bi
When Aeden woke up the morning of her class with Dean she was calm. She had made her peace with what had happened and had decided to just let him go. She knew it might hurt for a while but like everything else she had lost in her life it would be forgotten. She kept telling herself that she needed to relax and act like nothing had happened, it was the only way she would get through the class. She also kept saying that the first day is always the hardest. So, she got up, got dressed, had her breakfast and grabbed her books. When she got to the garage she stopped and looked at her cars. Aeden owned every Ford Mustang body style there was. Each one was in the original color for its year and all were running. Her favorite was the 1964 ½ Cherry Red Original Mustang. It was the first of the line and she had found it in a junk yard and had it restored. Taking the restoration class at the college was how she first saw Dean. He had been in the class as a student so she didn't get to talk to
Dean didn’t know what to do. He sort of understood why talking about her ‘finances’, as Aeden had put it, would upset her. But he didn’t think it was really as big of a deal as she was making it out to be. He knew he had to get her to talk to him again. When he saw her last night, something had changed for him. He had always noticed her but watching her looking at the stars had been different, it was like he was finally really seeing her and he never wanted to see anyone else. He knew in that moment that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and then he had blown it. She was so mad at him she had left him by himself at dinner and then wouldn’t talk to him on the way back to her house. Normally he would talk to a couple of his friends and then make a decision but this time he needed to talk to just his best f
“Did you stay living with your parents after the lawyers?” Grant asked. “Yes, I didn't move out until I was 20. Things calmed down after about 6 months. And when I turned 18 and had enough money I started getting estimates from contractors to build this place. Once it was finished I moved out.” Aeden said. “And about a year later Aeden had her first stalker and had the wall and guard station built.” Jordan said.
So, for the next two days she dedicated herself to cleaning the house. Aeden had a maid of course but sometimes you just have to do things for yourself. And Sherry, her maid, followed her from room to room working with Aeden instead of re-cleaning after her. When it came to her office Sherry took a lunch break and allowed Aeden time to herself. Sherry usually only dusted the desk, changed the bed linens, and cleaned the adjoining bathroom. But she knew, after talking with Jordan, that Aeden might need to do a little on her own. So Aeden sat at her computer and scanned items inputting them into different files and backing everything up on a few different systems. She then took all the papers put them in files and then put them in a safe within a safe, just to make sure. Being a writer, she knew what could happen if certain papers got into the public. How damaging things could be and how things could be misused against you. It had happened once; it was a small letter she had w
