Chapter 12

Luna smiled sweetly, convinced that Jimmy loved her too.

Still, she was not confident around him, and her usual lofty girlboss demeanor vaporized around him.

And seeing Luna just then, there was a flicker of jealousy in Josie's eyes, though she stayed indifferent and said, "If you need an excuse to go to Eastport, I actually have one. Adam White's family will be celebrating his birthday soon, and as Lunacorp has received plenty of help from the White family, isn't this the perfect opportunity?

"Moreover, considering the connection between the Cash family and the White family, Mr. Cash would definitely attend it. Then you have every reason to meet up, don't you?"

As Luna's assistant, Josie was better informed than Luna on occasion. Moreover, there were many things that Josie would sieve through before bringing to Luna's attention.

"Adam White is celebrating his birthday?!" Luna quickly exclaimed. "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Josie? This is serious—I would attend it even if Mr. Cash isn't coming."

After all, it went without saying how important the White family was in Easton. Even if Lunacorp appeared to be a behemoth, they were like an ant to an elephant compared to the White family.

Hearing that, Josie explained, "It's just a rumor, since the White family hasn't really decided on anything. And it looks like Adam White didn't want things to get rowdy, but his family insisted on it since he's going to be eighty and it's a big deal. We haven't received an invitation either, so I didn't tell you.

"That said, it's definitely happening, so you should pick a good present. The White family wouldn't want for anything, but we know that Adam White loves paintings. We can try to get one for a present, and he'd be delighted."

Luna nodded at first, but then frowned. "If we can come up with that, others definitely could as well. It's Adam White's birthday, so a lot of people would want to use the opportunity to curry his favor—even if we tried our luck at an auction, the price would end up being raised ridiculously…

"Well, whatever. Let's put that aside for now, since my mom and Dean's situation is more important right now."

Just mentioning it left Luna in a bad mood again.

No matter how much she despised her mother who played favorites and was cold toward her, Wendy was still her mother.

And no matter how much of a loser Dean was, he was still her brother.

She could be upset with them—even hate them—but no one else got to hurt them.

Josie stayed silent in turn, since saying anything now would seem wrong before they found out what had happened.

Soon, they arrived at the VIP room of the hospital, and Luna finally knew why her father was so anxious—the very sight left her heart racing.

After all, Dean's arm was bent at an unnatural angle!

It had been plastered, but it was still a horrific sight.

As for his face, there was hardly any semblance to how he looked before, and there was no telling if he would recover.

Either way, he would stay disfigured for a while.

As for Wendy, there was a clear palm print on her face!

She had been slapped, and very viciously at that, or it would not have knocked out her teeth.

And when Wendy and Dean saw Luna arrive, their haughty attitude was suddenly gone, as they cried and yelled.

Luna's face was ashen even as she strode up to Dean. He kept whimpering but was unintelligible because of his swollen cheeks.

Then, Luna turned toward her mother, her teeth gritting audibly as she stared at the palm print on Wendy's cheek.

"What's going on, Mom? Who did this to you?"

Luna did not bother to ask who was right or wrong, and that was exactly what Wendy wanted.

Shedding tears of grief right then, she bawled, "Who did you think?! You!"

"Me?!"

Luna was stunned, never expecting that answer.

She could tell herself with a clear conscience that she had never upset anyone.

Even if she did, they would not have gone this far.

Sighing, she pressed, "What happened? Just explain it to me—don't worry, I'll help you no matter who it is."

It was only then that Wendy sobbed. "It's that bastard Ted York!"

Both Luna and Josie were left stunned.

Plenty of possibilities had crossed their mind, but not one where Ted was involved.

They knew the man very well, after all—he would never ever raise his voice and was so down-to-earth anyone could walk all over him.

And Wendy was saying someone like that would get physical? Against his former mother-in-law and brother-in-law at that?

That was just crazy, so Luna and Josie were immediately skeptical.

"Ted?" Luna frowned right then. "Are you joking, Mom? Ted would never have the balls to hurt someone, let alone go that far."

Wendy was absolutely aggrieved. Forget Luna—even she could hardly believe it, but it was Ted who attacked them.

"It really was Ted!" She sobbed. "You never really know a person… You're so right to divorce him! Who knows what he would've done to you if you hadn't! You'd better watch out—if he dares to hurt me and Dean, he'd definitely hurt you too."

"That bastard… he's an animal!"

Luna knew her mother too well to know that she would not frame Ted at a time like this.

Even if Luna did not want to believe it, this was reality and there was nothing much else to be said.

Josie was gritting her teeth as she turned toward Luna as well. "Mrs. Lambert is right, Luna. You never really know a person—Ted York usually pretends to be harmless, but who knows what he really is like.

"I mean, you saw how he snapped back at the office. That look was just scary—now that you've divorced him, he wants revenge. That's definitely it!"

Wendy's eyes lit up at Josie's words, and she snarled viciously right then, "Josie's right, Luna. Ted wants revenge because you divorced him! He's scared to hurt you, so he hurt me and Dean instead. That piece of shit! How dare he! And I was his mother-in-law for years!"

Rage flared over Luna's chest, and any guilt she felt toward Ted vaporized. Now all she felt was rage and spite as she could gut Ted right then.

"That piece of shit… I'll get him for this. Don't worry, Mom—I'll definitely make him pay!" she growled, but she soon frowned as she remembered something. "Wait, why did he attack you? Did he come looking for you?"

Wendy's eyes twitched, but fortunately for her, she had already thought of an excuse.

"N-No!" she promptly cried. "We were at your mansion, and I just heard you got a divorce. I wanted to ask him what happened—whether he did anything to hurt you—but he snapped at us before I could finish, saying there's nothing between us since you've divorced him. He told us to fuck off, and, and… Anyway, he said terrible things!

"Dean got upset and snapped at him a little, and he threw boiling water at Dean's face! Boiling water! Can you imagine?! I was going to snap at him too, but he slapped me! This is the first time in my life that I've been slapped!

"Dean saw me get slapped, so he fought back despite the pain… But Ted broke his arm! Luna, that prick is a demon in human skin! He's really not what he seems!"

The more Wendy spoke, the more agitated and furious she was.

On the other hand, Luna stared at her for a while, rage blazing in her eyes.

She knew her mother, but did it matter even if it was not the absolute truth?

Whatever the case might be, it was a fact that Ted had attacked them, and very viciously at that.

They had just divorced, and he had immediately hospitalized her mother and brother.

He deserved what was coming for him!

Luna said coolly, "Don't worry, Mom. I'll definitely help you on this and make Ted pay."Wendy nodded but soon gritted her teeth. "Luna, I heard that you gave him a lot of money when you divorced him? You shouldn't have—he's an ingrate, so take back everything from him. Don't give him a single cent, so that he'd have to beg for alms on the streets."As Wendy finished, she turned, her eyes fixed on Luna.To be honest, she was actually worried that Luna would say yes.If she did, the plot she and Dean hatched together would be exposed, and she was not about to say that out loud.Nonetheless, Luna frowned. "The money's nothing, Mom—it at least ensures that I can have peace after the divorce, and it's the best thing to do. Don't worry… I know what I'm going to do about him, but he can keep the money. Otherwise, we'd get more than what we bargained for if we mess up my plans."Though Wendy was inwardly relieved, she made an angry face and snapped, "Easy for you to say! That's not a sm

As Ted left to visit the Grahams, Luna had Josie contact Panther, personally inviting him to dinner.Panther was a crime lord with hundreds of henchmen and his fingers in every pie. Still, one could already imagine what he was since he was from the underbelly of Melville.Josie was surprised that Luna was still sending Panther despite knowing it was Ted—in fact, she was ready to cripple or kill him.Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, as they say.-Meanwhile, Ted was still unaware that Luna was sending a crime lord after him, or he would be laughing at himself otherwise. However, he was not going to be afraid. Forget a Melville crime lord—he had dealt with Easton's Three Giants too, and there was no telling who feared who in a confrontation.Still, just before Ted arrived at the Grahams' place, they were having a tense moment.Ever since John retrieved Lucas from Ted's, he was fidgeting endlessly with insecurity. He thought that personally visiting Ted with Lucas bound a

Right now, there was no question that Lucas was the one man who wanted to see Ted the most but also wanted to see him leave. The former was because Lucas did not have to continue kneeling if he saw Ted now, while the latter was because he was absolutely embarrassed to be seen kneeling.Even now, he did not believe that he was at fault—it was all his father's fault for making a mountain out of a molehill. But there was no helping it now. Even if he could threaten Ted, could he threaten his own father? That would be suicide! That was when John glared viciously at Lucas. "You wretch! Kneel and apologize to Mr. York this instant!"Then, he was smiling as he turned back toward Ted. "He really doesn't know what's good for him, having the balls to mess with you. I'll definitely punish him severely for this."Ted glanced coldly at John, however. "Oh, is that so? Most people shouldn't be aware who I really am—is it not with your instructions that he managed to find me?"His words left

It was not as if feelings could not be faked. That was especially true with a man like John Graham. One could already imagine his methods, considering his present standing in the world—putting on a show was basically second nature for him.But Ted knew that these were John's true feelings—on this matter, at least. He really loved his wife and was genuinely in pain for her.And that was really rare for a man. While Ted did not have the full picture of John's circumstances, he had done some homework and knew certain things. In Melville, there were all sorts of rumors about John. Some said that he was cold and callous, while others called him vicious, and then there were those who claimed that he was charitable. But amid all those rumors, there were none that had ever accused John of being a philanderer, let alone being disloyal to his marriage.Still, it was not because they were reluctant—they simply had no opening to do so, as everyone could see how much John and his wife loved

John was not really doubting Ted, thinking that he was just coming up with some excuse to deny his wife treatment. He was simply anxious, and just waiting another day was grilling for him.Still, Ted frowned slightly as he glanced at John. "I know how you feel, but this can't be rushed."Also, I've said I'll save your wife, and I will. Here's a prescription—have your people obtain every herb and ingredient as listed, while every procedure and heat level must be followed to the letter. In three days, your wife's condition will be stable, so you could send her to Eastport."It's the ideal option as it would increase our chance of success. A week of conditioning would heal her enough to endure the toll of travel, allowing her body to slowly recover."John's tears were overflowing once more when he heard Ted. He had no idea if the golden needles would work, but he knew that Ted's promise to stabilize her was something that everyone else could not do.There was certainly nothing mo

As a bigwig in Melville, even if he was free from scandals himself, John just needed to say the word to gather some ladies with clean backgrounds and a good head on their shoulders. In less than thirty minutes, John was personally reviewing several pretty faces in his own house—from scholars to socialites and relatives, there was quite the wide variety. However, none of them had anything to do with anything messy, as even their families were clean. As John would be asking them to curry Ted's favor, he would not do anything dumb to get anyone unruly. While the ladies had no idea why John had asked for them, it was clearly nothing bad, since John's virtuous reputation vouched for him.If it were Lucas, however, they would be turning pale by now.Still, John soon said. "The rest of you can go. Winter, you're staying."The lady named Winter was around five feet seven, with fair skin and a voluptuous figure, and she sported a pair of glasses. She had the looks, was diligent, and had

Ted sat in his hotel room, feeling at a loss.Too many things were happening all at once, coming so abruptly that he did not even have the time to process anything. However, what had happened had happened—all he could do was accept that, though he did not want to change anything either. What could he do when they had decided to do what they had done? Surely he could not just tell them who he really was, and that he was not just some loser? Even if it might save his relationship, would it stay as pure as he had hoped for it to?Ted sighed, shaking his head to stop himself from thinking about that nonsense.Still, just as he was about to go to bed, the doorbell suddenly rang. Presuming that it was hotel staff, Ted opened the door to find a woman, who looked at once maidenly yet mature, standing there.Naturally, it was none other than Winter. And just as John expected, once she had done her best to look pretty, even Ted could not resist looking twice."And you are?" he asked no

However, Dean and Lucas faced one major problem now—where would they get that painting? There was not much time, and it would not be easy to get a painting that suited their needs. As Dean explained his problem, Lucas chuckled. "Don't worry, my friend. It's only natural that I have a solution since I came up with this plan… Have you heard of the name Seamount?"Dean shook his head, and Lucas smirked—a complete idiot, just as he thought.Still, to keep up appearances, he explained patiently, "It makes sense if you've never heard of him, but your sister would definitely have."He was a monk who was also an artist who lived over three hundred years ago—most importantly, there are only a handful of his surviving works. Each is worth dozens of millions, and it's not even a matter of money… It's so rare that one could imagine how much it means to a collector."By sheer coincidence, my friend has one of his works, and said friend is also in urgent need of money. And Wolfie's men had certainly never suffered such humiliation before!"Wolfie, this is too much! I almost snapped right then, even if he's got a good head on his shoulders. We didn't say shit, and he knew.""Yeah, but ignoring you? That's way over the line! And he's even treating us like servants, telling us to prepare his breakfast! That's way over the line!""Come on, let's do it, Wolfie! Gotta teach him a lesson even if we can't kill them, or we're never going to live this down!"Even before Wolfie could speak, his men were all ashen-faced in rage, ready to beat up Ted right then and there.Wolfie, however, took a deep breath and gritted his teeth. Ted chuckled. Was he being threatened again? It had certainly happened way too many times over the past two days!Still, it was not the time to show his chops.Looking Wolfie straight in the eye despite his murderous glare, Ted smiled and shrugged. "Fine. Just try stopping me."His reaction left Wolfie stumped. He had already anticipated every kind of reaction from Ted, with Ted threatening him in return, fighting back, or warning him in some way.But shrugging and letting Wolfie a free kill was absolutely not what Wolfie expected. It was such a fearless expression that absolutely belittled him!Even as Wolfie felt that Ted was trampling all over his pride, his eyes flared with rage while he snarled through his teeth. "You'd better recognize your situation—I've tolerated you as much as possible, but you're asking for it!"Ted merely smiled faintly and retorted in disdain, "You're the one who threatened me, telling me I won't be able to leave the room. "Well, your hospitality doesn't matter much. What does is that your cooperation will be ideal for everyone all around. I'm actually here to bring you to Eastport, so please work with me and not put me on the spot."Hehe… Judging from your expression, you must have seen action before. The average person would be shaking in their boots if they saw a group like mine—the heir of the Quill family is really truly above the rest."It just so happened that Mr. Zarkonnen had already told Wolfie that Ted was really Theodore Quill, but Ted was frowning at the mere mention of his real name."My name is Ted York, understand?" he growled, looking

If he were around, would he have willingly allowed his throne to teeter on the brink of schism?"Then, sighing emotionally, Mr. Zarkonnen continued, "To be honest, the Celestial Throne isn't what it once was. Moreover, if Wendy really had such a friend, why not tell Luna directly? She would certainly mend their relationship and get another excuse to choke Luna for more money. In Josie's mind, that begged the question—why her? And why stop her from telling Luna? The more Josie thought about it, the more she sensed a catch. At the very least, it was not as simple as Wendy put it."Mrs. Lambert, why didn't you tell Luna directly?" Josie asked then. "She'd be delighted to hear it—so why me? And why did you tell me not to tell her? Why don't you be frank with me?"She did not ask about the authenticity of the painting, since she would definitely consult experts who could see through it right away.Wendy looked at Josie calmly in turn, even smiling. "I have my reasons, of course… for example, I'd get a cut if this deal is a success. See, I'm going to introduce my friend to you, and you can get any appraiser to verify it. "Y'know, Josie… I've always treated you like family. You know that, don't you?"Josie smiled and nodded. "Yes, you do… By the way, why did you ask for me?
