I storm outside, fury fueling every step. Carter is such a fucking asshole. Four years of cheating on Charlotte, and now he dares to call her a whore?

"Nora!" Connor shouts behind me, but I don't even glance back. The cold air hits my face as I push through the club doors, but it barely registers. My eyes lock on Carter instantly. He must sense my rage because he turns and smirks at me across the street.

"Here comes the other whore!" he yells, voice cutting through the night air like a knife.

I storm toward him, my anger boiling over. "You're such a fucking pussy!" I shout. Carter, still smirking, downs his drink and carelessly chucks the glass against a car. The glass shatters, leaving scratches in its wake. "Hey, man!" someone yells, but Carter doesn’t even acknowledge them.

“You are such a weak, weak person, Carter. So pathetic.” I hiss at him. He gets right in my face with a burning cigarette between his fingers. “Am I, whore?” he hisses back. "You cheating piece of shit." I

I turn to Mason, who’s staring at my torn dress and my bruised cheek. "What happened to you?" he asks, concern written all over his face. "Well, I just tripped over SOMEONE'S shoes and nearly cracked my skull," I say, still lying on my back. I’m too exhausted to get up. "Someone hit her," Esme blurts out. Mason's head snaps toward her. "Wait, someone hit you?" "Ah, yeah, someone did hit me," I slur, pointing at Esme to back her up. "Who hit you?" Mason's eyes narrow, his voice laced with anger. "Carter," I huff, the mere thought of him fueling my frustration. "Carter who?" Jace's voice comes from closer now. I look up and see him hovering over me too, his gaze locked on my cheek and arm. "Carter Smith?" Mason says, piecing it together. "Charlotte’s ex? The senior?" "That’s the one," I say with a click of my tongue. The bright light above me has my head throbbing. "Why did he hit you?" Mason asks, his tone still angry. I sigh out. "Well... I called him a pussy. And weak. And

My head is pounding when I wake up. "God," I whisper, dragging a hand over my face. I need coffee—and I need it fast. As part of our morning ritual, I grab my phone and connect it to the speaker downstairs. Knowing Mason, he’s already up. Esme will be in bed for a few more hours. I play Kiss me bij Lola Jane and then lay back down for a few minutes. Every morning, I play a song on the speaker to let Mason know I’m awake. He then turns on the coffee machine so I can have a steaming cup of caffeine right away. Too tired to put in my contact lenses, I grab my glasses and run downstairs, running my fingers through my hair to detangle it a bit. It’s still straight from last night, so luckily it isn’t too bad. My cheek is almost back to normal, just a slight red mark remaining. When I open the door and slam it shut again, I see Mason sitting at the dining table, working. He eyes me up and down, frowning. "Put on some clothes, Li." I huff and practically sprint to the kitchen. "These ar

“The swimming cave,” Mason answers. My face instantly lights up; it’s probably my favorite place in the world. Nestled in the forest, about an hour away, is a pond half inside a cave. You can climb into the cave from the outside, and jumping into the water is an exhilarating thrill. “We’re all going?” Jace suddenly asks. No. Please, not him. My phone vibrates, and Mason glances at it quickly. I grab it before he can and put it on my lap. Mason narrows his eyes. My phone vibrates again. “Who is that?” he asks, nodding toward my lap. “Well, I don’t know, do I? I haven’t checked,” I reply with a shrug. Esme sets two coffees in front of us, and I take that moment to look down and peek. -Char: Hey, girl. Thank you for defending me last night. -Mr. Grumpy: You have no homework? “Can you please eat today?” Mason asks. I skillfully flip a pancake and put another pan on for more. “Can I make my own decisions?” I respond with a sigh, irritation creeping in at everybody around me. “Not when those decisions involve drinking too much, hanging out with people who sniff coke, and not eating,” Mason replies calmly. “You're not Dad, you know,” I mutter, flipping the other pancake. As soon as I say it, I turn to him with a sigh. “Don’t compare me to Dad,” Mason warns. “Yeah, I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I’ll eat,” I quickly apologize. My eyes flick to my phone, and I bite my lip, guilt creeping in. Mason doesn’t notice and instead ruffles my hair in his annoying way just as my phone rings with an incoming call. “Love you, sis,” Mason says with a smile before walking away to the living room. I grab my phone and hesitate for a moment before answering. “Hey,” I say to Ryker. “Nooooooraaaaaaaaallliiiii!!” he responds cheerfully. “We’re picking you

Mason stays silent for a while, and I bite my bottom lip in anticipation. "Fine, yes. I'm sorry for being so controlling. Just let me know if you need a ride. Please don’t do anything stupid, baby sis. And if Ryker offers you cocaine, don’t accept it," Mason says, his voice tinged with sadness. "Okay, brother. Got it. I’ll see you tonight. Love you!" I hang up and let out a deep sigh, my heart still pounding. "We're here!" Ryker shouts, jumping out of the car and stretching his arms. "God, almost dying makes you thirsty," he adds, eyeing the bottle of gin. Rolling my eyes, I exit the car and take in the lush greenery around us. Perfect. Connor wraps his arm around me and leads me toward the park where the lake is. He’s carrying a big bag filled with food, drinks, and badminton gear in one hand. Ryker runs ahead, unfurling a picnic blanket and testing various spots until he finds the perfect one beneath a tree. He then drops to one knee and offers to take off Hannah’s shoes. She gr

“Yeah… I’ll call him back later,” I say, hitting decline and tossing my phone into the grass. The last thing I need is more anger from Mason if I pick up that call. “Anyway, what are you doing here?” Ryker asks, completely unbothered by Lina’s antics. To be fair, most people know he deals in cocaine. There's even a teacher who occasionally gets it from him. “Just going for a walk. Taking in the views,” Jace replies, his voice relaxed and calm. Hannah frowns and signals something to me. I grab her hands and lean forward, stretching our arms above our heads in the grass. Hannah giggles, forced to arch her back, making us lie chest to chest. We intertwine our fingers, our noses nearly touching, my hair framing our faces. “I don’t think you should come to class on Monday,” she whispers softly, careful not to let Connor hear. “Why?” I whisper back. “I don’t know what you did, but I think a certain teacher might kill you,” she warns. I grin. “What’s new?” “Okay, see you at school! Do

"I'm home!" Connor shouts as soon as we step inside his house. Before anyone can respond, he grabs my hand, pulling me up the stairs. His house is large, bright, and immaculately clean—not a thing out of place. The upstairs is just as pristine, with a wide hallway lined by closed doors. Connor leads me to the last door, pulling me inside and slamming it shut behind us. His room is just as spotless as the rest of the house. "Your room is neater than mine," I remark, my eyes landing on his perfectly made bed. My blanket is probably still half on the floor back home, and Humphrey is likely curled up on it. "Yeah, my mom’s a clean freak. She gets nervous when things are messy," Connor explains. I take in the details of his room—big bed by the window, a desk with a gaming computer, a TV facing a couch, a PlayStation, a big stereo, and several dressers. "Thanks for saving my ass earlier," Connor says, grabbing two beers from a mini fridge. He offers me one, but I shake my head. Drinkin

"Mason, you need to stay out of my business a little bit. Connor drank too much and couldn’t drive. I was the only sober one, so I took everyone home. I was at his house for just a few minutes before I called you," I explain with a sigh. Mason turns to me, surprised. "Are you serious?" His tone softens immediately. I nod, closing my eyes. Then I feel his hand on my shoulder. "Well, look at that—responsible Norali Raven," he says with a smirk. I can’t help but smile. "I have my moments." "Alright, I just don’t want you to end up as one of the many notches on his bedpost. The stuff I hear about him in class makes me want to vomit. Listening to girls talk about his kissing for hours… blech." He fake gags, making my smile widen. "His kisses are mediocre," I tease. Mason’s head whips toward me. "Li!" he shouts, sounding both panicked and shocked. I laugh. "Relax, it was just a kiss. Nothing else happened." Mason nods, thoughtful, obviously still not happy with my comment. "How abo

Hannah quickly sidles up to me, turning us both toward the bartender. “Two glasses of your finest red, please,” she says in a sugary tone. The bartender nods as the boys reach us, still laughing. My nerves are on edge. My brother is watching us. And Mitch is- His hand suddenly lands on my waist. “Are you drinking?” His voice has an odd tone. I glance over my shoulder at him, brow raised. “Yes? We’re out,” I reply, puzzled. “One glass. It’s not classy to drink too much,” Mitch declares, chin raised in some fake superiority. I don’t respond. The glass is placed in front of me, and I drink half in one go. Mitch leans against the bar, close enough for me to feel the heat from his body. He glances past me. “Did you know they’d be here?” he hisses, his fingers brushing over my bare arm, se

"You know, you should really thank me," Mitch says as we merge onto the highway. I pause for a moment, trying to make sense of his words. "Thank you?" I ask, confusion settling in. "For taking you away from him. He hurt you," Mitch replies, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. "I saved you." I stare at him, my mind spinning. He can’t be serious, right? "He's never hurt me," I reply back, my voice strong. Mitch’s face twists with anger. He pulls out his phone and throws it onto my lap. A video plays on the screen—it's me, bent over Jace's desk, Jace behind me, hitting me with a ruler. "Watch," Mitch snarls. "I don’t want to watch," I snap, quickly turning the phone off. "He was clearly abusing you! I'd never do that!" Mitch hisses, his voice rising. "I would never hurt you like that!" "You hurt me, Mitch. You threw me against the lockers earlier," I counter, anger rising in my chest. Mitch turns his gaze towards me, even though he's still speeding down the highway.

Jace. He gave me this. I stare at the beautiful necklace in my hand, my mind racing. There's a second package on the seat next to me, and I tear it open with trembling fingers. Cat treats. He got treats for Humphrey. Warmth floods my chest, and I can’t stop the tears from welling up. Why does he have to be my teacher? Why couldn’t we have met in a coffee shop like normal people, instead of this twisted situation? I quickly start the car, eager to get home. But as I pull my seatbelt on, my foot hits something hard under the seat. Frowning, I reach down—and my fingers brush cold metal. I lift the gun slowly and turn it around in my lap. A gun. I have a gun in my car. Is he expecting me to shoot Mitch? Is this just for my safety? The weight of the gun in my hand is nothing compared to the heaviness settling in my chest. I shove it back under the seat, almost frantic, and drive home with a thousand thoughts running through my head. When I finally step inside, the comforting sme

A loud slap from Jace’s desk cuts through the quiet, startling everyone, including Mitch. His hand jerks away from my leg, as if burned. I bite my lip to stifle the grin threatening to spread across my face. "Get to studying," Jace orders, his voice low and dangerous. "I don’t want to hear another word from anyone." The tension in the room shifts. A few moments of silence follow as students begin to focus on their work, scribbling notes, flipping through textbooks. Even Mitch is reading. I have no clue what his grades are like, but something tells me he wants to perform. "Hey," Hannah whispers from beside me, her tone light. "We’re still going out tonight, right?" She glances at me, then shifts her gaze to Mitch, her expression casual. "You’re coming too, Mitch? You should join. It’d be good for you to hang with Nora's friends, get in our good graces." "Where?" Mitch asks. His voice is tense. "Amsterdam," Hannah says with a cheery tone, "the quiet part. We always have a few drin

"We need to get to class," Mitch says, breaking the tension. Everybody turns to him. Charlotte narrows her eyes at him. She dislikes him. Severely. But she doesn't speak, and doesn't even comment about his hand on my lower back. "Come," Mitch orders me next. I follow, much to the shock of the rest of the group, and we walk in without speaking. Some students stare at me, but I remain unresponsive. I’ve felt detached from myself ever since Mitch entered the classroom yesterday. He sticks by me all day, like a newborn baby unable to stray from his mother. Even during lunch, he doesn’t allow Hannah to come near me. We sit together, but he won’t let me be alone with her. He makes small talk with everyone and keeps his hand somewhere on me at all times. "I need to pee," I say when lunch is over. "Hold it, love. Classes are almost over," Mitch replies. The sudden urge to throw something hard at his face is almost too big of a temptation to ignore, and I grab my bag tight. "I can't hold

Mitch's hand tightens on my leg, his fingers pinching my skin painfully. A warning. What can I do, anyway? She might not even believe me. What can I say? "He’s got a video of me fucking my teacher, and now he’s blackmailing me"? I nod. "You kids need to get out. Before I arrest you," the officer orders, turning her attention back to Mitch. He nods and starts the car immediately. As we drive back to the main road, I stare out the window, my body shaking. "My brother will come looking for me if I’m not home soon," I say. "Of course," Mitch replies smoothly. "I’ll drive you home. I’m good like that. I’ll pick you up tomorrow for class," he adds with a smile. "Okay," I respond in defeat. Until that video is removed forever, it’s best to keep Mitch happy. My mind is a whirlwind when we reach my house. The green Aston Martin parked in front reminds me of Jace. Where is he? "Your phone," Mitch says, extending his hand. "What?" I frown. "Your phone. Give it to me," he demands, his to

He looks at my shocked face, a smirk playing on his lips. "Yes, I know he’s your brother. It’s not hard to pick up on those things." “Come on. This is the last time I’m saying it. I have to go with him. Slowly, I walk toward him, but Jace steps in front of me, blocking my path. “Li,” he whispers, reaching for my arm. “No!” Mitch snaps, stopping Jace in his tracks. “No. You’re never touching her again. That was the last time. I hope you enjoyed it.” His teeth are bared, his expression wild and threatening. He looks like a rabid animal. Jace’s gaze locks onto mine, an intense fury radiating from him. I feel tears well up in my eyes, my body aching to go to him, to feel his arms around me, to hear him tell me everything will be alright. I crave the safety that only he can give. Crossing a big, fat line. "What’s yours is mine, sugar," Jace says, his arrogance palpable in the air. "I don't fucking think so," I retort, my voice firm as I press the knife against his skin. A line of crimson appears, and for a moment, I’m entranced by the sight, my hold slackening in shock. Jace seizes the opportunity with both hands. He grabs my wrists and yanks me from his lap, twisting me around. My chest collides with the hard surface of his desk, the unforgiving wood forcing the breath from my lungs. He pushes his hips against my ass, my skirt riding up. "Jace, stop!" I gasp, trying to rise, but he pushes me down with a firm hand, pinning my wrists behind my back. "But it is, my sweet Norali," he whispers in my ear, his voice low and dangerous. "Everything you own, everything that you are... it's all mine. All of it." "In your dreams," I reply defiantly, the fire in my chest flaring. But then—whap! A ruler strikes my ass hard. "No, Jace, I don't like you right now!"

"You have a date today?!" Hannah asks in a whisper shout. "Apparently," I whisper back, "he texted me this morning about escaping for a while." "This thing is getting quite serious," Hannah remarks. I bite my lip. I look over her shoulder outside, to the car park. I forget what we're speaking about. "Is Connor cleaning your car?!" I yell out loudly. The lesson comes to an abrupt halt as everyone turns to the window. Connor is indeed washing the back of the Porsche with a wet cloth, and disbelief washes over me. My eyes must be betraying me. "Yes. He's my personal assistant. I won the race, remember?" Jace replies casually. "That's fucking brutal," Hannah states, her voice kind of impressed. "That's what you get for provoking me," Jace answers to that. The respect for him in the classroom rises. Another side of Jace has been revealed, one that demands respect. Jace is someone who will always gets his way. Whether with force or not, he will get it. That thought scares me a little,
