CHAPTER SIX
"Sip that slowly, because that will be your last glass for the night." Roman says, interrupting my line of thought.I glare at him and gulp down my drink at record speed, feeling lightheaded at my little act of defiance.I smile again at yet another faceless stranger I know I will never see again. After Roman had forcefully taken me for the primping required to attend an event of this magnitude, he took me back to his car and gave me a tablet which contained valid, strong and convincing reasons why I should attend his stupid ball without making any fuss.I had seen tons of pictures of both my dad, my stepmother, and my step-siblings. In those pictures, they were doing the most mundane things, like walking to the park, hanging out with friends, and even sleeping. There were also pictures of my friend Ashley, both in the dorm and at home. The message was very clear, and he didn't have to say anything more. It was clear that if he wanted to hurt them, he would've.While I wish for my stepmother and my dad to leave me alone, I would never wish them to die, and even if they were to die, I wouldn't want their blood on my hands."Let's dance." Roman says while leaning forward, taking up all my space in order to whisper in my ear.I look around at the people seated at our table and watch as they steal glances at us from below their lashes, too scared, I guess, to stare openly. Not waiting for a response, Roman gets up while holding out his hand, probably for me to take, but I choose to ignore it."Do I have to remind you why you should dance with me?" He leans down to whisper in my ear.I swallow down the bile in my throat and stand up stiffly while putting on the fakest smile in all of history."That's what I thought." Roman says with a smirk before placing a warm hand on my lower back.I barely hold back a shiver as his fingers move in a circular motion on my bare back due to the style of the dress. When we get to the centre of the ballroom, which had been carved out for those who choose to dance, he comes to an abrupt stop.He turns me around carefully before pressing me into him with the hand at the small of my back.As if in a trance, my hands move on their own accord until they are wound almost too tightly around his neck."It's nice having you by my side." Roman says while settling both hands on the low of my back.I don't bother responding as I look at all the people dancing around us."Pay attention to only me." Roman says while pinching my chin with his thumb and forefinger. He leans down towards me, breathing softly on the curve of my neck. He laughs lightly when I shiver a little from the sensation."Are you cold?" Roman asks in an amused tone."No." I bite out, not wanting him to know the kind of effect he has on me, but at the sight of his smirk and the tightening of his arms around my waist, I knew that it was all just wishful thinking on my partWe move carefully together in tandem. I allow him to lead me gently following the sway of the soft music.I never wanted to be here, but it would be a cold day in hell before I refused to enjoy myself thoroughly. I close my eyes, imagining myself in an alternate universe with my very own horse-riding and sword-wielding Knight.I imagine him whispering dirty nothings in my ear while peppering kisses down the trail of my jaw.I open my eyes and jerk back as far as I can in Roman's embrace. He had leaned down very closely like he had been about to kiss me. Apparently, what seemed like a dream was happening to me in real life. Our stare-off is broken, and our moment is disrupted by the boisterous sound of a man I presume is Roman's father, due to the uncanny resemblance. "Son, why didn't you tell me you were bringing a girl home?""I didn't realize I owed you an explanation or a warning," Roman says with a raised brow."What a charming partner you have here." Mr Montgomery says to me with a tight smile, and to Roman, he says, "Would you mind if I borrowed her for a dance?""Find your own partner." Roman says with a clenched jaw."Careful son, remember duty calls." Mr Montgomery says while nodding in the direction of a pale beefy-looking man.Roman curses under his breath before letting go of my waist, giving into his father's wishes, "Be good, princess, this will only take a minute."I stare at him numbly as he makes his way towards the pale man I had spotted earlier, not knowing how to feel about his easy acquiescence.A soft hand on my back breaks my line of thought, not willing to cause a scene, I allow Roman's father to lead me gently on the dance floor, and I hold my hand loosely on his shoulder not caring about the undoubtedly ridiculous space between us.I curse myself for choosing to remain here with his father just because he said, 'Be good' like I was a dog.We turn in a way that gives me a direct view of Roman standing beside the man and a girl who is a replica of him and who, if I'm to bet, is probably his daughter.I watch as Roman takes her hand, and soon they're dancing. I spot the cold look on Roman's face despite the chattering of the girl he was dancing with. I tell myself that maybe he's just doing it cause of work as his father had said, but I stop my line of thoughts and ask myself why I even care."They make a perfect couple, don't they?" Mr Montgomery asks me in a lilt tone."Huh?" I ask dumbly, not quite sure who he was referring to."Them." He says, nodding at Roman and his dance partner.I mean to give an affirmative answer, but words refuse to come out of my mouth, they remain stuck in my throat. I avert my eyes, not willing to see the truth of my mistake in Mr Montgomery's eyes."That's what I thought." Mr Montgomery says in a sad tone. "Be careful, I wouldn't want to see you hurt.""Is that a threat?" I ask defensively."Trust me, it's coming from a place of care." He says with a small smile.I'm about to ask him why he would care, but we are interrupted by Roman and his dance partner."Mind if we switch?" Roman says to his father, but without waiting for a response, pulls me towards him, and we walk back to our seats."What did my dad say to you?" Roman asks me when we are seated."Who was the girl you were dancing with?" I ask instead of answering, not willing to tell him that his dad threatened me, no matter what he said about caring. He looks at me, totally unimpressed by my antics. We are interrupted by a squeal from our back."Roman!" A female voice says while throwing her arms around his neck.I scoff inwardly, already counting down to the moment when Roman will undoubtedly explode at the unwelcome attention, but I'm shocked when he actually gets up and actually returns her hug."How are you doing, Georgia?" Roman asks warmly."I'm good, how about you?" Georgia says before turning to me, probably noticing me for the first time, "Hello.""Hello." I respond with a small wave while taking a large sip of my water, not in the mood to hold any sort of conversation with anyone."This is Aella, my girlfriend, and she gets jealous easily. Don't take her cold nature to heart." Roman says with a smirk, which has me sputtering, the water having gone down the wrong pipe. I glare at him while trying to subtly wipe the water off my chin so as not to ruin my makeup."If I was your girlfriend, I would also be very territorial." Georgia says with a little laugh."How about you go on with your business for the night, and I will take care of your girlfriend here?" Georgia offers.I fully expect Roman to refuse, seeing that he had isolated me from more than half of the people present at the ball, but I'm extremely shocked by his response. He gets up from his seat, "That's a great idea, Georgie." Then to me, he merely says, "Behave."I don't bother dignifying his command with a response. I rather keep my eyes glued to Georgia, who has a heated look in her eyes as she stares at Roman's retreating back."How about we head to the ladies' restroom for a quick stop?" Georgia asks brightly.Grateful to just be out of the atmosphere of this room, I nod my head readily and allow her to lead me to the bathroom.Just like the rest of the mansion, the bathroom is nothing less than elegant, with pristine white toilets and faux toilets, the wash sinks were nothing less than spotless.I stop in front of the mirror, and I dab at my makeup a little, not knowing what to do while Georgia makes use of the facilities."You know….. he's never brought a girl with him to any of these events." Georgia's statement announces her arrival from one of the stalls in the room."That's very believable." I say sarcastically while wiping an imaginary stain off my cheek.Georgia laughs softly while dabbing softly on her lips. "I know, right?""But that's the truth. He sure has his flings, but he never brings them home." She continues."I'm not his girlfriend, no need to lie to me." I say to Georgia peeved that she's trying to sell me the idea of me being special to Roman."Why would I lie to you? If Roman wants you, he will definitely treat you differently from his previous sexual companions, and Roman is more than capable of handling himself without my help." She says."Of course you would know." I say, a little upset at the way she sounded so experienced 'in the ways of Roman'.She throws her head back and laughs so loudly, that I half expect the stall doors to start shaking from the impact. "I'm Roman's cousin or sister. However, you want to put it." She says after she gets herself under control."Oh," I say quietly as I flush red in embarrassment. Once again, I had jumped to the wrong conclusion. I had mistaken the look of adoration to be that of lust."No need to be embarrassed, it's kind of my fault for not saying anything." She says while packing up all her stuff from the counter."Even if you were his wife-to-be or something, it wouldn't concern me." I say, feeling the irresistible need to make it clear that I wasn't interested in Roman."You know what?" Georgia asks while linking her arms with mine, "We are going to be best friends."On our way back, she chatters excitedly, telling me all about the effort she had put into making this event a success. Apparently, she was head of the planning committee for the ball.At the last minute, she makes a U-turn and heads directly to the stairs, leading to the upper floor of the mansion, "How about we have our own little party in my room?""Won't they look for us?" I ask, already slowing down my steps. While I was not a coward, I never ever wanted to end up on the wrong side of Roman's temper, and he had clearly told me to behave."Don't worry about Roman, he is really just a big Teddy, he wouldn't be mad about this." She says while waving her hand nonchalantly in a dismissive manner.I scoff, already running through all the times Roman had proved to me that he was more than just a 'Teddy'."I feel like there is a very interesting story there, and you, my dear, will tell me all about it but don't worry, I will tell Roman I took you with me." She says, and I eventually give in, allowing her to lead me up the stairs and into her room. She pulls out a bottle of wine from her mini bar and grabs both glasses when we get to her room. She hands one to me and settles down on the floor in what looks like a very comfortable position."Sit, and tell me all about how you met my cousin." She says, patting the floor beside her.I sit down beside her while she fills my glass to the brim and does the same with hers before settling back down."I need to get drunk for this conversation." I say while taking a large gulp of my drink."I should warn you though, Roman made it very clear I was not to get drunk." I say to her while hitching up my dress almost to my thigh level."Is he always this highhanded with you?" Georgia asks with a little frown, probably trying to reconcile the Roman she knows with the image he has shown and portrayed to me."You should know, I mean he's your brother, is he always like this with other girls?" I ask her not bothering myself with how that sounds."And I told you, he doesn't bring any girls home." Georgia responds while taking a steady sip of her drink."You know what, enough about Roman, tell me all about yourself and then if you feel like it, you can still tell me how you met him." Georgia says with a reassuring nod.I smile genuinely at her already feeling the alcohol doing its job in getting me high, I know that sooner or later I won't even be able to talk without slurring."Just one instruction, Aella, just one. Don't get drunk, just that, but you still couldn't keep to it." Roman says with a clenched jaw. I look at him. Like really looked at him. I observe his features, tightened by anger, and can't help comparing him to a fallen angel. I lean all my weight on him, not particularly concerned about how crazy I might look. "It's not her fault, I got the drink and forced it down her throat." Georgia says, slurring on the words. "Noooo, that's not true, I was a willing participant." I manage to squeeze out in my drunken state. "And trust me, princess, you will pay for it." Roman interrupts."Why do you always have to be a killjoy? Who gave you the right to tell me whether or not to drink?" I ask angrily, probably jumbling all the words due to alcohol influence. "No one." "Absolutely no one gave me any right, I took it for myself." Roman says, "And the sooner you understand that, the better it will be for you." "Why can't you just be like every other
After we had successfully gotten rid of most of the flowers, keeping just a few, Ashley refused to let me go to my classes without telling her all the details of the ball. I told her everything that happened but kept some details to myself, mostly my conversations with Roman. I didn't know whether she would appreciate his arrogant and highhanded nature. "So what? Are you guys like dating now?" Ashley asks me. "No, we are not." I say strongly. Ashley packs her stuff into her drawer before turning back to me, "But he's called you his girlfriend on countless occasions." "And yet, he still hasn't asked me out. Heck, we've barely even gone on a date, excluding the ball." I say to Ashley. "Would it be so bad to date him?" Ashley asks me. I'm quiet for a few minutes, pondering my answer. No. It wouldn't be so bad to date him. Beneath the bad boy exterior lies a very caring young man, which I won't stick around long enough to acclimatize myself with. I flop back on the bed, not concern
Roman rushes towards us, and with his hands on the professor's collar, he violently pulls him off me and starts pummelling his face. He throws well-landed punch after well-landed punch and ignores my pleas for him to stop."How dare you?" "How dare you touch what's mine?" Roman asks the professor in between choking and squeezing the life out of him. "I'm sorry, I didn't know she was with you!" The professor says while clawing at Roman's hands around his neck. One look at him and I knew for sure that if Roman didn't stop now, he was hoping to have a murder on his hands. The professor's face was a mixture of blood, snot and tears. His screams resounded in the hall, and soon students rushed in, watching from the sidelines. "Roman please I'm begging you, I'm begging you to stop." I say desperately while carefully tugging at his shirt. Rather than respond, he shrugs me off and continues punching the professor, only with reduced intensity. After what seemed like years but could only be
"Don't answer that." Roman says to me as he gets off the bed and heads towards his mother. "There is a lock on my door for a reason mom." "What do you mean by that? There's a strange girl in your room, and no one is saying anything." His mom says in a stern tone. "Come on, mom. Let's talk outside." Roman says before pulling his mom out of the room and locking the door behind him. Left to my own devices, I have a lot if time on my hands and I decide to use it to explore Roman's room cum lair. I limp off the bed and search the drawers, finding absolutely nothing in there. Now that I pay good attention, I notice that most of the room is just plain bare without any trace of personal possessions. Further exploring proves this theory to be right, apart from basic items like clothing and shoes as well as a first aid kit, the room seemed very bare. However what it lacked in personal items, it made up for with its sheer grandiose. A floor to ceiling window took up one entire side of the
'On your knees princess.' The order keeps replaying in my head as I scramble to kneel up in the bed. "Hands up." He orders. When I obey, he slowly pulls his shirt off me leaving me bare to his hungry eyes. "Fuck." He says while running his hands through his hair in almost frustration. I fight the urge to shield my less-than-adequate breast with my arms. I move to cover up while blushing furiously but Roman stops me with a hand on my wrist. "Don't ever cover yourself from me, because you're fuckung perfect." Roman says forcefully as if he truly believes that if he says it forcefully enough, maybe I will believe it. Roman leans down to my face level and places kisses just on the side of my lips, teasing me till I'm hungry and willing to beg just to experience the feeling of having his lips on mine. After a moan of frustration, he finally gives me what I want, only it's too much for me to handle. With a firm hand on my jaw, he forces his tongue through the meagre barrier that is my
I wake up with a pounding headache and a fresh bruise in the shape of a fist on my left cheek. I look around the dimly lit basement and feel a sense of deja vu wash all over me. I haven't been here since I was sixteen, too many traumatising events keeping me away from this room. I would rather risk the wrath of my stepmother than step into this moment, but look at me right now, lying on the same floor with no way to leave. I get up from the floor and almost fall back down from the bout of dizziness that hits me. I lean on the wall until I'm strong enough to move towards the door. "Please open the door!" I scream while banging on the door, almost bursting into tears when, after a few minutes, nobody responds. I feel around my back pocket for my phone, and when I find it, I almost die from relief. When I take it out, however, my mood turns sour at the total lack of network, almost as if my dad had installed a cellphone jammer in this room. I turn on my phone light and look around th
"I seduced the professor." I say the moment I'm back in the dining room. My dad looks at me in shock while both Kate and her daughter Mia are looking at me with poorly hidden smirks. "Are you sure of what you're saying, honey? There's no need for you to cover up for that vile evil professor." Kate says in a very caring tone, successfully hiding her evil plans and intentions. "I watched the security tapes, and I saw that man put his hands on you over and over again even after you told him to stop. There is no way you seduced him." Kate says in a tone that leaves me stunned. She buries her face in her hands, sobbing softly, like just the thought of what I went through was traumatising her. I finally understand her plan when I take a look at my father's face. She was literally setting me up for a fall. She was trying to act like she had too much faith in me to believe that I would do something as cheap as seducing a professor. She was doing it to stoke the flames of hatred my father
"Roman?" I ask beneath the gag."Yes, baby?" Roman asks in response while pulling the strong duvet off my body. "Get this off me!" I scream beneath the gag in words that I'm sure come out in incoherent mumbles. "I will remove the gag if you promise not to make a sound." Roman says in a patronizing tone. "Nod if you understand." I nod my head angrily, willing to do anything to get him to take the gag out of my mouth and off my face. He takes off the gag slowly, watching my face for any signs of defiance. Satisfied with what he sees, he takes it off fully, giving me a lopsided grin that almost melts my resolve. Almost. "What are you doing here?" I whisper yell at him while trying to get my hand out of the loose rope he has around my wrists. "To see you of course. What do you think?" Roman says giving me a dumb look while sitting up in the bed. I wiggle once more, trying to get my hands out of the ropes binding them together. "Why would you want to see me? You made it painfully
A hard choice has to be made. My past or my present. After my mother died, it was almost as if all the friends she had and her family as well vanished into thin air. It became clear to me when I grew up, that my father purposefully cut them out of our lives. I had sworn to myself that I would come back and look for them but life happened and I haven't had the chance to. If I stay back for even an hour longer, I will surely be caught which is why I refuse to turn back. With tears dripping down my cheeks, I forge forward as I run towards the motel. I barely see the road in front of me as the tears refuse to stop. I rush into my room and hurriedly change out of my dress and into some pants and a tee. “Is there any particular reason why I'm standing here?” I ask the security guard with a carefully practiced bored expression on my face. “I'm just waiting for confirmation, and then I will let you pass. I'm sorry. Instructions from the higher ups.” The man says once more before he continues his work. My heartbeat increases as I look around me. Most people were starting to look at me suspiciously and sooner than later, Roman is going to get me. “Fine. Where's the bathroom?” I ask the man after some time of thinking. “It's just down that way.” The man says with a polite smile on his face as he points me to a door at his far right. I don't say anything as I haul my bag with me towards the stalls. ‘Fuck!’ This is not supposed to be happening. I had to get on that train. And I have to do it fast. I weigh my options and come up with a hasty plan I hope is enough to get me boarded. I open my duffel bag and say a little prayer of thanks for having a bestfriend like Ashley. I take out t
I pull the car I had driven to a stop in front of Ashley's house. I barely have the time to turn off the car and step out of it when Ashley comes running out of the house with a bag in her hands. I had called her on the ride down here and had given her the watered down details of what went down explaining in very clear terms that I was leaving. “Drive! Drive! Drive!” Ashley exclaims as she slips hurriedly into the front seat of the car. I do as she says and zoom off, watching as the bodyguards who are supposed to be watching her attempt to pursue our car on foot but have no such luck. “What the hell, Ashley? What was that all about?” I ask once we've gone a considerable distance away from her house. “I had to lose the guards. It's not like you would have appreciated it if I had brought them along with us now, would you?” Ashley asks while settling down further into the seat, putting on her seat belt. “What do you mean ‘us’? You aren't coming with me.” I say to Ashley with a slig
“She's working hand in hand with someone in your house.” I say to Roman the moment he steps back into his office. His shirt sleeves are folded and his tie is a bit loose, his hair also looks like he had run his hand in it countless number of times in the last few hours. “You don't believe me.” I say in a quiet tone when I'm met with his silence. “It's not a matter of believing you or not, it's about who led you down this part, princess.” Roman responds in a quiet tone. “I don't know. There were a couple of people involved. Oh, wait. There's one. The man that tried to kill me in the massage parlour. The person who lured me outside and pushed me into the pool in the hotel in Seattle. The person that has been sabotaging all my work right in this office.” I say angrily until I'm panting heavily.“You told me you fell into the pool.” Roman says in a deadly cool tone. “Do you need me to continue?” I ask Roman, ignoring his questions. “Ever since I woke up from this godforsaken coma, my
“Where are you going, Roman?” I ask in a confused tone as I step into the office and find Roman packing up his stuff. “I have an urgent meeting to attend. I will have the driver take you home, princess.” Roman says in a response as his intense gaze roves over my face. “I have something to show you, Roman.” I say in an urgent tone as I take a step closer to him. He starts to say something in response when his phone goes off ringing. “Fuck!” He curses as he sees the caller Id. “Go home straight, princess. We will talk when we get back. Don't give me a reason not to let you off on your own again.” Roman says while giving me a pointed look. I nod my head and give him a tight smile as I pack up my things. Files and documents I want to work on when I get home. There was no exposing Lily now. I have to wait till he gets back home as promised. This was all even better. At least she won't be present to try and sway him or lie to him about everything. Just as I'm finishing up, a knock s
“Ashley?” I call out in urgency, the need to see her safe overriding my need for self-preservation as I step out of the car and hurry into the house. “Aella?” Ashley calls from inside the room where I hear voices. I rush into the room and find Ashley sitting on the bed where she looks pretty comfortable. “Thank God you are here. Please help me these people that I'm indestructible and there's no need for the fuss.” Ashley says with an exasperated sigh as I hurry to her bedside. I spot a cold-looking Ethan standing by the window, staring sharply at the doctors surrounding Ashley and totally ignoring the nurse who made it her life's mission to attract his attention. “Tell me you are okay, Ashley.” I say in a wobbly voice as I pull her into my arms. “Of course, I'm okay, Aella. I told you, they can't hurt me.” Ashley says in a strong tone, but she still tightens her arms around my midriff. I get on the bed with her as I try to quiet my sobs, and I don't say anything when I feel my
“Where did you take her to, Roman?” I ask in an extremely calm tone that I have a hard time recognising as mine. “Calm down, Aella, he had nothing to do with this.” Ethan says as he steps into the house, immediately reading the situation. “Where the fuck did you take her to?” Roman barks at Ethan, barely sparing me a glance. “That's not important right now. I need you to let go of Ashley, right this minute!” I say to him in a trembling voice, wondering why I'm afraid of him finding out I was out with Ethan when he could possibly be holding Ashley hostage. “Why would you think I'm the one responsible for all this?” Roman asks me in a confused tone as he takes a step towards me. “If you aren't involved, then what are you doing with those pictures? I saw you take them out when I came in.” I respond with tears rolling down my cheeks. “I saw them lying outside when I came into the house. To look for you, but apparently you weren't here.” Roman explains in a hard, sinister tone as he
“Tell your boy toy to let your father go, Aella! How could you be this wicked!?” Kate asks me in a tone laced with anger. “Mother, I'm not holding his hands now, am I?” I asked in an innocent tone as I give Ethan a subtle sign to let my father go. “We should have indeed sent you down to a nondescript orphanage deep in the woods all that time ago. All you've done since you grew up is insult us and punish us for all the good we've done for you!” Kate says with teeth bared as Ethan finally lets my father go. “Why didn't you?” I ask in an angry emotion-filled tone. At this point, anything would have been better than growing up under their care. “You ungrateful bitch!” Kate says as she takes a threatening step towards me, stopping short when I don't cower back in fear. I see the uncertainty in her eyes and I can't help but feel smug about it. Ethan finally lets go of my father and he drops to the ground, coughing violently while clutching his chest. “When you sleep at night, let Aell
