Emily's POV

I didn’t knock. I didn’t need to. The halls of Galahad were quiet, the moon casting a silver sheen on the stone floors as I made my way to the east wing—his wing.

Fayne’s door loomed before me, tall and dark like him. I placed my hand on the wood, felt the quiet thrum of power behind it, and then I pushed it open.

He was there, as I expected, standing shirtless by the open window, moonlight kissing the planes of his back. He turned when he heard the door creak, his sharp eyes narrowing as he took me in.

“Emily,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “Why are you in my room?”

I stepped inside slowly, letting the door shut behind me with a soft click. I didn’t answer right away. I let my eyes drift across the space—his space. Dark linens, weapons mounted on the walls, a subtle scent of cedar and steel. It was all so *him*.

“I don’t think you understand,” I said, my voice calm, confident. “This room doesn’t belong to you anymore.”

He blinked once, slow and unreadable. “Excuse me?

Emily's POVThe room still hummed with the remnants of our closeness—skin on skin, breath against breath, the weight of secrets momentarily stripped away by the warmth of his touch. I lay beside Fayne, the sheet barely covering me, my body still tingling from everything he’d given me… and everything he hadn’t said.He was quiet now, one hand tucked beneath his head, his other resting over my waist like a quiet claim. The rise and fall of his chest matched the rhythm of my thoughts—slow, cautious, a beat away from asking the one question that had been clawing its way up my throat.I tilted my head toward him, watching the soft lines of his face. He looked peaceful, even beautiful in that brutal kind of way only warriors are—scarred and carved by life but still standing. Still mine. For now.“Fayne,” I said softly. His eyes opened, deep and golden, flicking to mine. “Yeah?”I swallowed the hesitation. There was no space left for fear. Not between us.“If it ever came down to it… would y

Fayne’s POVI knew what was in that letter. The way her fingers lingered on the envelope. The cool steadiness in her voice when she told me not to get caught. The faint shadow in her eyes that said more than her lips ever would. It wasn’t just a message. It was a sentence. My sentence.I’d seen enough of war, betrayal, and broken promises to know when someone was tying off loose ends. Emily wasn’t the kind of woman who sent love notes wrapped in silk. She was sharper than steel and more dangerous than any Alpha I’d ever bowed to. She didn’t beg for loyalty—she tested it. And sometimes… she buried it.Still, I didn’t care.If this was the way she wanted me to prove my loyalty—walking into my death with a kiss on my lips and her name in my chest—I’d do it. No questions. No hesitation. That’s what loving her felt like.Like falling on your sword and smiling while the blade pushed deeper. When she left my room that night, I watched the door longer than I should have, memorizing the soft s

Emily's POV"Do you think he’ll survive?"I asked the question aloud, even though I already knew the answer. Maybe I just wanted to hear someone else say it—to confirm it, or deny it. Either way, the air in the room was too still. The silence made my skin crawl.Melissa, perched across from me in her usual way—elegant, smug, and mildly amused—raised an eyebrow. "You mean Fayne?"I didn’t bother answering. She knew."You sent him with a letter that would have any Alpha slit his throat on sight." She tilted her head. "So tell me, Emily… why are you suddenly hoping he survives?"I looked down at the wine glass in my hand. The red liquid swirled slowly, dark as blood. Everything was too quiet. Too calm. Too perfect."I don’t like attachments," I said finally. "They make me soft. Unfocused. Vulnerable."Melissa leaned forward. "You didn’t answer the question."I hated how sharp she was. She could slice through pretense in a single sentence. A weapon in silk."Maybe," I said slowly, "it’s t

Emily's POV “She tripped and fell.”Link stood at the edge of my chamber, hands behind his back, posture razor-straight as always. But there was a glint in his eye—calculated calm, the kind only he could wear like second skin.“She was walking back from the infirmary alone,” he continued. “Fell down the slope near the west barracks. Hit her side on a rock. The medics said the internal bleeding was too much. She died before she could be saved. So did the child.”My spine remained stiff, but I felt my hands twitch slightly where they rested on the arms of the chair. I kept my expression composed, but a strange tightness curled around my chest.Esther.And the child.I looked away, fixing my eyes on the fireplace. The flames danced innocently, unaware—or perhaps completely complicit. I didn’t speak for a long moment. My thoughts churned beneath a surface I refused to crack.“I see,” I finally said.“She didn’t suffer long,” Link added. He wasn’t offering comfort. He wasn’t the comfortin

Emily's POV Link trailed behind me silently as I made my way to the gate, his presence quiet and deadly. Before I could even question what her true motives were, there she stood—tall, commanding, with golden eyes that didn’t flinch in the face of blood.“Alpha Rosie,” I greeted, letting the title slip off my tongue with a pleasant sharpness. “Welcome to Galahad.”She gave a cool nod, her hands folded behind her back, but her gaze was sharp. “You’re Emily.”“I am,” I said, matching her posture. “Alpha of Galahad.”Her eyes flicked toward Link, then to the guards posted behind me, and finally back to me. “Alpha Jacob’s... departure was abrupt.”“A difficult transition for the entire pack,” I said smoothly. “But one we’ve weathered. Galahad stands.”Rosie didn’t blink. “I received a letter. It said he was unwell. It was hurried. Unfamiliar. I came because I don’t trust words written in a stranger’s hand.”I tilted my head slightly. “Stranger? You wound me. I was Jacob’s confidant long b

Emily's POV Rosie didn’t blink. “Not the way you mean. But yes. He was family. He would’ve bled for me. I would’ve bled for him. That’s the kind of bond we had.”That was dangerous. That kind of bond meant she wouldn’t give up until she found answers—and if she ever sensed the truth, she’d become a problem I couldn’t ignore.“I miss him too,” I said softly, folding my hands. “But the pack needs strength now. Not ghosts.”“And yet,” she murmured, “I don’t see his strength in you. I see ambition. Cold hands, warm smile. Like someone who’s already buried too many secrets.”I tilted my head, keeping the mask of calm in place.“Secrets are necessary. Especially when enemies linger at the gate.”“And what do you consider *me*, Emily? An enemy?”“No,” I said. “But I’ve been surrounded by wolves who smiled while sharpening their teeth. You learn not to trust too easily.”“I’d say the same of you.”We were silent for a beat. She was testing me. Measuring. And I needed to guide her toward the

Emily's POV Gasps rippled through the crowd, disbelief flashing across their faces. “He fought bravely,” I continued, my voice unwavering. “But even the strongest among us cannot escape fate. His spirit now runs with the ancestors.” Whispers surged like a rising tide. Doubt. Uncertainty. Then— “Where is his body?” The challenge came from a warrior near the front, his arms crossed, his expression wary. Others murmured in agreement. I met his gaze head-on. “His body has been laid to rest, in accordance with our sacred customs. His burial is private, as per tradition.” It was a carefully chosen response. A body buried was a body that could not be questioned. The tension in the room did not ease. I could feel the doubt thickening, wrapping around me like a slow, creeping vine. Then came the voice that cut through the murmurs like a blade. “I don’t believe it.” The words were sharp. Defiant. Alpha Rosie. She stepped forward, her presence as commanding as ever. Dr

Then he kissed me—tender and slow, reverent like he was kissing the future itself. When we pulled apart, I took his hand and placed it over my belly. “We’re going to raise her in a world better than the one we inherited.”He nodded, jaw set with purpose. “We’ll protect her, always.”“No,” I said, smiling faintly. “We’ll *prepare* her. Emily's POV I had started walking more, slower than I was used to, often with Melissa at my side. She kept teasing me about how I still looked like a warrior even in a maternity cloak. I told her it was because I was one — just one with a new battlefield to navigate.Fayne had become… quieter, but not distant. Protective, without being overbearing. He spoke to the pack more now, taking some weight from my shoulders. He was patient with me — patient when I snapped for no reason, patient when I cried without warning, and patient when I needed silence instead of comfort. In the mornings, he would leave flowers by my bedside — wild ones, not arranged, just gathered. I never asked where he found them, but I always knew they were from him.One evening, as I sat on the balcony that overlooked the training grounds, I felt a soft movement beneath my ribs. Emily's POV The council hall was filled with tension as sharp as steel.Allies, former rivals, uncertain observers — they were all gathered here in Galahad’s chamber of unity, carved from ancient stone and lit with braziers that crackled like beating hearts. My pack members stood tall behind me, their loyalty etched into the ground beneath them. My brothers were given space at the central table, not as intruders but as guests with something to prove.I stood at the head, the stone beneath my feet warmed by the morning sun spilling through the high windows.“This council,” I began, voice strong and unwavering, “is not merely a conversation. It is history in the making.”Fayne was at my side, silent but fierce. I could feel the weight of his gaze steadying mine. And if my brother’s been using it… it means someone in Galahad helped him.”Fayne’s face darkened. “Joren mentioned someone—someone higher up. They called him ‘The Watcher.’ Said they were orchestrating something from within.”My knees nearly buckled. The Watcher..My blood whispered with dread. Emily's POV Dawn broke over Galahad like a sigh of relief—gold light bleeding through the shattered remnants of war. The air still smelled of smoke and blood, and the ground outside the pack house was carved with claw marks, ash, and sorrow. We had survived. But we had not emerged unscathed.I stood before the remaining pack members in the central courtyard. Healers moved quietly among the injured. Warriors, some still bleeding, knelt beside the bodies of their fallen. I felt their eyes on me as I stepped forward—not as their Alpha, but as someone who bled alongside them.“We lost too many,” I began, my voice steady, though my heart throbbed behind each word. “But we are not broken. We are not done. Galahad still stands.”A low ripple of voices answered me, like the beginning of thunder.“Our enemies came into our walls,” I continued. “Not through strength. Not through skill. But through betrayal.”That silenced them.I looked at Fayne, who stood at the edge of the gathering with his

You’ve always been,” He spat, raising a blackened blade—ancient and cursed.“No,” I growled, blood in my mouth. “You just never expected me to survive.”I launched my power again, this time from the core of me—fueled by rage, by memory, by the child I hadn’t even held yet.
