Chapter 48

Author: Jean Song
Noelle was wearing a long black dress. Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders, the ends slightly curled. There was a gentle smile at the corners of her lips, and she looked incredibly serene.

Liam must have said something to her because her smile deepened, and then she lifted her eyes to look at him. Her gaze shimmered, like a glimmering lake under the sun.

Hendrix realized he had never seen her smile like that before. In his memories, Noelle had always been quiet and dull.

But as soon as the thought crossed his mind, another memory surfaced.

It was from the last time in the car, when she had kissed him suddenly—an impulsive kiss that landed on his lips while they fought over the sketchbook.

That had been Noelle's first kiss to him. And it seemed it would also be the last.

As Hendrix lingered on that thought, ahead of him, Liam had taken a few steps forward. He turned and said something else to Noelle, who smiled and shook her head.

Liam didn't say anything more. He just opene

Noelle knew it all, but she still found herself instinctively saying what she said out loud. Then, in his response, she heard the answer she had already known, and it felt almost like self-inflicted torture."I understand," Noelle said. "Have you said everything you wanted to say, Mr. Freeman? Can I get out now?"Hendrix didn't say another word, but the car slowed down slightly. Finally, he pulled over to the side of the road.Noelle didn't hesitate. She turned and reached for the door."Noelle," he called out suddenly from behind her.She paused while opening the door, but she didn't turn around.Hendrix gripped the steering wheel, carefully considering his words. "For the sake of our time as a married couple, you… can come to me if the Swansons are facing any difficulties."Don't try to disgust me like this."Noelle slowly tightened her grip on the door handle. After a long pause, she said, "Well, thank you, Mr. Freeman."With that, she opened the door. Noelle didn't sleep a wink that night. Every time she closed her eyes, the nightmares crept in.A damp, dark room, a door that never quite closed, clothes inexplicably soiled and drawers rifled through, and finally, the man's disgusting, lecherous face.Eight years had passed, yet Noelle still couldn't escape the haunting memories. And now, her adoptive father, William Kaplan, was out of prison. He was free!Noelle didn't know how William had gotten her number, but the feeling it brought—the suffocating sense that she could never outrun him—was all too familiar.Even this apartment, the one she had only recently rented, no longer felt safe. She couldn't shake the sensation of unseen eyes watching her, waiting to pounce.Noelle couldn't stay here anymore. But where could she go?In the end, she went to the hospital.Noelle knew there wasn't much Cynthia could do for her, nor could she tell the latter anything. But just being there and seeing her gave Noelle a small measure of c

Finally, Noelle sank onto the couch, wrapping her arms tightly around herself.Just then, the same unknown number flashed on her phone again. She hadn't saved the number, but after seeing it just once the previous night, it was already seared into her memory. Without hesitation, she grabbed the phone and hurled it to the floor.…At Nivis Villa, Mabel stood on the other side of the ornate iron gate, her sharp gaze fixed on the scruffy man in front of her. "And who are you supposed to be?""I'm William Kaplan. I'm Luna's… I mean, Noelle's father," William said, baring a grin that revealed yellowed teeth. "I know she's staying here. Tell her to come out and see me."It was common knowledge in Coppersville that Noelle had been missing as a child and had spent over a decade in the countryside. One glance at the man, and Mabel instantly recognized who he was. Her lips curled in disdain as her gaze swept over him."Ms. Noelle has moved out.""She moved out? How is that possible? Isn'

Thanks to Mabel's reminder, Hendrix remembered that his birthday was approaching.Once he got into the car, he instinctively pulled out the lighter he always carried. It was black and gold, unadorned except for his initials engraved in the lower corner. It was a simple, unremarkable gift. However, it was the only gift Noelle had ever given him.The second year…Because he hadn't bothered to show up at their anniversary party, Noelle hadn't even sent him a perfunctory gift for his birthday last year. And this year…Hendrix cut the thought short, slipping the lighter back into his pocket before opening the tablet in front of him.But before he could focus, the car lurched to a sudden stop. The jarring motion made his brows furrow sharply, and his eyes were stern. Levi hurriedly explained, "Apologies, Mr. Freeman, but up ahead…"Before the man could finish, someone who had been blocking the car moved to Hendrix's window and began banging on it. The man appeared to be in his 50s

At the entrance of the restaurant, it was Levi's reminder that finally drew Hendrix's attention to the man speaking with Craig. Looking visibly annoyed, Craig stepped around the man and walked away. However, the persistent man wasn't ready to let him go and followed closely behind. Seeing that Craig was about to get into his car, he raised his voice. "Mr. Swanson, if you don't agree, I'll have no choice but to go back to Mr. Freeman and tell him everything about Luna."Hendrix had been ready to leave. After all, neither Noelle nor the Swanson family had anything to do with him anymore. But upon hearing William's words, he suddenly froze mid-step."Mr. Freeman?" Dan called out, but Hendrix ignored him, turning his head to the side to see that the previously indifferent Craig had already let William into his car.Hendrix narrowed his eyes slightly."Mr. Freeman, the 'Luna' that he mentioned…" Dan spoke with confusion. But before he could ask, Hendrix had already climbed into his

Noelle returned to Coppersville. She wasn't sure if Craig still had people watching her, but she made no effort to avoid meeting William. They met at Quivo—a famous restaurant in Coppersville. When Noelle arrived, William was already there, sitting in a chair with one leg crossed over the other and flirting with a waitress. His gaze was invasive, and his words were vulgar. The young waitress, visibly distressed, kept her head down while tightly gripping the menu.Even though Noelle had prepared herself for this meeting, the sight of William still made her feel uneasy. At that moment, William noticed her. He immediately got up and waved eagerly. "Luna!"With clenched fists, Noelle approached the table. The waitress, seeing her arrive, quickly set down the menu and fled as if she'd been granted amnesty.William's gaze lingered on the waitress' retreating figure for a moment before turning his attention back to Noelle. "Long time no see, Luna! You're even more beautiful now!"As

After a brief pause, Noelle turned back and said, "Go ahead and tell them."Her response left William stunned. Before he could react, Noelle had already walked away.Furious, William slammed his hand on the table and got up to follow her, only to be stopped by a waiter. "Sir, you haven't settled your bill yet.""What bill? I didn't even order anything!""Sir, even without ordering, we still charge a seating fee," said the waiter, his eyes scanning William with unconcealed disdain.William trembled with anger. He was about to slap his bank card—which held his last 50 thousand dollars—onto the waiter's face when another voice interjected, "I'll take care of it."Hearing the voice, William's expression shifted abruptly. He turned around to see Sandra handing her card to the waiter. She then turned and smiled at him. "You must be Mr. Kaplan, right?""And you are?""I'm Noelle's sister, Sandra.""Ah, the little orphan the Swansons picked up." William sneered, his gaze roaming ove

Noelle and Liam met at a private restaurant.Despite having lived in Coppersville for a few years, Noelle never would've known that such a place existed if Liam hadn't brought her there that day.The restaurant was tucked away on the border between the urban and rural areas of Coppersville. It featured white walls, black tiles, lotus ponds, and bamboo groves. At first glance, Noelle mistook this place for a scenic garden rather than a restaurant. The owner of the restaurant was a young woman whose appearance was unremarkable, but she exuded grace and spoke with elegance. It seemed that Liam had made all the arrangements beforehand. Without even taking their order, the woman simply served them coffee and left the room."Their ingredients are all prepared fresh daily. So, I had to pre-order the dishes yesterday. I hope that's okay," Liam explained with a gentle smile. One wouldn't be able to tell from his face that he was annoyed with Noelle for losing contact with him two days ea

Hendrix didn't reply. Instead, he simply tossed the folder in his hand to Dylan.Dylan glanced down at the folder. Something flickered across his eyes, but in the end, he reached out and took it.The moment he skimmed the first few pages, his face turned as pale as a sheet, and his grip on the documents tightened instinctively. After a moment, Dylan finally looked at Hendrix. "What's the meaning of this?"Hendrix let out a soft laugh. "What do you think it means?"Dylan quickly regained his composure and asked, "Where did you get these?""That's not something you need to concern yourself with.""So? What do you want?"Sitting on the couch, Hendrix leisurely poured him a glass of wine and took a sip. Throughout the entire process, he maintained his usual elegance and composure, whereas Dylan's expression grew darker and darker. Finally, Hendrix said, "What do I want? I thought I'd already made it very clear.""Mr. Freeman, we're both men. Don't you think using tactics like thi

Hendrix grew exasperated. When he heard the sound of the door lock turning, he lifted his head and barked, "Get lost!"The single, decisive shout silenced everything outside instantly. Even the woman in his arms went completely still.Noelle seemed to realize that her resistance was futile. The hands she had been pressing against his chest slowly dropped away, and even the tears in her eyes vanished in that moment. She slowly sank back and tilted her head upward. Then, she simply stared at the glaring incandescent light with eyes filled with emptiness.Hendrix stared at her for a while before suddenly laughing. "Are you really that upset? Or do you feel wronged? Does it really hurt you so much to leave him?"He was smiling, even forcing a mocking tone into his words, but his hands were trembling uncontrollably. It was a pain that started deep in his chest, spreading through his bloodstream until it reached his fingertips.Noelle didn't answer him, but her expression was as good a

Hendrix reached out and gripped Noelle's chin. In a deep voice laced with a clear trace of anger, he asked, "You've fallen for Dylan, haven't you?"Noelle didn't answer, but she pressed her lips tighter and tighter. Her eyes still brimmed with tears, but the moisture only made them shine more brightly, more vividly. In their reflection, Hendrix could see himself clearly, and he could also see the unmistakable hatred within them. She hated him. Hendrix knew that, of course. From the moment he decided to take this path, he had already anticipated how she would react. But so what? Was he supposed to stand by and watch as they became nothing more than strangers who had nothing to do with each other? If that were the case, Hendrix would rather she hated him.He could live with that outcome—it wasn't something he couldn't accept. But the one thing he absolutely couldn't tolerate was her heart belonging to someone else. She could hate him because of the incident with Elm Group, beca

As soon as Hendrix finished speaking, Noelle suddenly stepped forward and raised her hand. But her slap never landed. Hendrix had caught her wrist, his face completely expressionless."You're crazy!" Noelle said.Hendrix smiled faintly. "Yeah, I know."Noelle didn't say another word, but she trembled even more violently as tears began to fall. Still, it seemed she refused to show any weakness in front of Hendrix. So, she quickly wiped away her tears."Dylan's grandfather is sick," she finally told Hendrix. "Alzheimer's. His condition is deteriorating quickly, and he might not remember anything soon. That's why Dylan proposed to me."But when she finished speaking, the answer she wanted never came.Hendrix's gaze remained cold as he looked at her. When he noticed Noelle was still staring at him, he even asked, "So? What does that have to do with me?"Noelle took a deep breath. Noelle's expression changed as she heard Hendrix's words, and she turned to look at him.Her expression made Hendrix feel like something was stabbing into his heart. It seemed like he was right. That contractual relationship seemed more than that now. Noelle had fallen for Dylan. If not, what could explain the look in her eyes now?Noelle didn't even react this way when he brought up her and Elm Group. The dull pain quickly spread across Hendrix's chest, accompanied by a familiar metallic taste. His Adam's apple bobbed a few times, and after taking several deep breaths, he finally managed to suppress the feeling and said, "It seems like you really care about him.""Hendrix, this is between us. Can you stop being so despicable and dragging innocent people into this mess?""Innocent?" Hendrix chuckled. "It seems like you really don't know much about your fiancé. Do you know what he's been doing behind your back?"Before Noelle could respond, Hendrix handed her a file. "Take a look

"That's right." Hendrix nodded satisfactorily. "We already had bad blood, so why bother with fake pleasantries now?"He continued as he picked up the coffee cup in front of him. "You must really wish for my death right now, don't you?"Hendrix's voice was calm, with a faint smile on his lips, but the words he spoke were enough to leave Noelle speechless. She paused for a moment, but she quickly responded with a smile, "Yes, so you know.""Mm, but unfortunately, I'm still sitting here just fine," Hendrix said, showing no concern. He met her gaze with a cold stare. "And based on the current situation, I doubt I'm the one who's going to be ending things first."Noelle couldn't reply. Although Hendrix had treated her with this kind of attitude before, she still remembered clearly the taste of the drinks he forced upon her that night in Vinton City. At this moment, all she could see in his eyes was an endless coldness.Noelle's voice grew hoarser. "If that's the case, Mr. Freeman, w

Noelle subconsciously glanced at the person in the hospital room after hearing the secretary's words.Dylan was sitting quietly there.Looking at him, Noelle suddenly remembered the hug he gave her that morning. She knew that her relationship with him was purely contractual, including their marriage, but all she wanted at that moment was a hug.She knew this went beyond the scope of their agreement, but Dylan didn't bring it up, and neither did she.Perhaps Noelle had been looking at him for too long. Dylan sensed something unusual and immediately looked over at her.Noelle took a deep breath. "I need to go back to the company for a while. I'll arrange for a nurse to come over. As for here…""It's fine. Go ahead," Dylan quickly replied. "I don't have much to do today anyway.""But…""Have you forgotten? We're getting married soon, so your father is my father-in-law. She grabbed Sandra's hand and pulled her out of the room."What's this about, Noelle? You're hurting me!" Sandra still spoke in a sweet tone, but as soon as Noelle dragged her to an isolated spot, she immediately yanked Noelle's hand away, her voice turning cold as she asked, "What do you want?""I should be asking you that," Noelle replied. Noelle looked at Dylan for a long while, then smiled. "No need. Just stay with me like this." Dylan reached out and pulled her into his arms. His hug wasn't tight, and the faint fragrance on his body instantly filled Noelle's nose. Noelle made no effort to resist but slowly reached out and wrapped her arms around his waist. "How's your father?" Dylan asked her. "Acute stroke," she said softly. "But we got to the hospital on time, and the doctor said that as long as he wakes up, everything will be fine." "Mm, how about you go back and rest? I'll keep an eye on things here." "No. I won't be able to sleep even if I go back. Haven't you noticed my phone hasn't stopped ringing?" Dylan didn't reply.
