Chapter 146

Author: Jean Song
For some reason, Hendrix found himself at Serene Street. Gripping his steering wheel, he glanced at the winding alleys ahead a few times but ultimately didn't get out of the car. Instead, he turned the car around.

Soon, he saw Noelle. She was walking out of a pharmacy with her hands in her pockets, eyes lowered, and head bowed.

The temperature in the city was very low today, so she was dressed in a black down jacket. She looked very soft and serene with her hair falling over her shoulders and the tip of her nose slightly red.

As Hendrix watched her, he suddenly recalled what Beatrice had said to him earlier tonight. Indeed, he had no intention of using his marriage to gain anything, but back when the two families met to discuss his and Noelle's marriage, Hendrix didn't feel much resistance to the idea.

He had always thought it was Beatrice's words that had stirred something in him. So he figured, why not fulfill Gerald's dying wish if marrying anyone was the same to him? But now,

As soon as Maxwell spoke, Noelle noticed the smell of alcohol on him. His eyes were slightly red, and he certainly didn't look sober."If you have something to say, just say it," Noelle said.Maxwell stood by the door, staring at her for a while before finally asking, "Why didn't you come to my engagement party?"The two of them hadn't had any contact with each other since the last incident, so Maxwell's question actually caught Noelle off guard. But she quickly regained her composure. "There was no need for me to attend.""What do you mean, 'No need for you to attend'? Aren't we friends?"The word "friends" sounded incredibly awkward when Maxwell said it.Noelle looked at him for a moment, then smiled. "No. We haven't been friends since you and Sandra teamed up to hurt me.""So you chose Brandon as your way of getting back at me?" All the expressions on Maxwell's face suddenly vanished as he locked his eyes on her. "Is getting married to him another way of getting back at me?"

As Maxwell spoke, his breath brushed against Noelle's cheek. That sensation suddenly reminded her of the times she had faced William, causing the same nauseating feeling to surge up within her in an instant.Clenching her teeth, she fixed her eyes on Maxwell in front of her. "Maxwell, if you so much as lay a finger on me, I'll call the police immediately.""Go ahead. Call them," Maxwell replied with a chuckle, then added, "Do you really think that with your current reputation, anyone will believe a word you say? Believe me when I say that everyone will just assume it was you who seduced me."Maxwell's face was lit with a subtle smile. It was the same smile Noelle was so familiar with. But now, that familiar face felt more like the devil's. She suddenly found herself at a loss for words. She parted her lips to speak, but in the end, no words came out.Maxwell's smile deepened further when he saw her like that. He tightened his grip on her shoulder while his other hand slid around

It was precisely because of Hendrix's calm demeanor that Noelle felt an even deeper sense of fear. This was the first time she had ever seen him like this.Normally, someone fought when they were driven by anger. But it was the complete opposite with Hendrix just now. Noelle could sense that he was unnervingly calm.In that brief moment, she couldn't shake the feeling that Maxwell was nothing more than an insignificant object in Hendrix's eyes—something he could control at will. Whether Maxwell lived or died seemed of no concern to him. When Hendrix spoke again, Noelle was still frozen in shock. Without sparing her another word, he glanced at her once more before pulling out his phone. Just as he was about to call the police, Noelle rushed forward and grabbed his hand to stop him."Don't…"Hendrix lowered his gaze to her, his eyes still devoid of any emotion."Let's get him to the hospital first." At last, Noelle found her voice.Hendrix didn't respond, nor did he move. After w

Hendrix's voice remained cold, but his grip on Noelle's wrist tightened. His actions gave Noelle an unsettling feeling, as if one wrong answer from her was enough reason for him to crush her bones."It's not that I don't want to see you," replied Noelle.Hendrix didn't respond immediately. Instead, he lifted his gaze to meet hers."It's just… I don't see the need to." Noelle pressed her lips together. "We—""Why did you marry me in the first place?" interrupted Hendrix.Noelle hadn't expected the question. The suddenness of it caused her expression to change, but she quickly regained her composure. "It was something our families decided.""Was that really the only reason?""What other reason could there be?"Hendrix fell silent, but his grip on her wrist loosened every so slightly.Noelle initially thought the conversation had come to an end, but the next moment, Hendrix spoke again, his voice calm but deliberate, "Noelle, based on your ability to sever ties with the Swanson f

Noelle swallowed back her words and glared at Hendrix with gritted teeth.Hendrix smiled out of the blue. "I just realized something. I can't seem to marry anyone else. But the strange thing was, when I was about to marry you, I didn't feel much resistance. Can you tell me why that is?"Noelle felt as though everything before her was unreal. It was as if she were standing on the edge of a cliff, one foot already slipping, her whole body about to plummet. But instead of the expected shattering impact, nothing came.On the contrary, it felt like she had fallen onto a vast, soft cloud. A cloud that was warm and sweet, a sensation she had never even dared to imagine before. Slowly, Noelle opened her eyes. The warmth of the sunlight greeted her. There was no cliff, no cloud, but the familiar bedroom in Percy Gardens. So that meant everything that had happened last night was not just a dream. As Noelle sat there, lost in thoughts, the phone next to her suddenly dinged. It was a messa

"I—" Noelle had just uttered the first word when Hendrix interrupted her, "You're still inside the apartment, right? I'm downstairs."Noelle's expression instantly changed when she heard that. She instinctively wanted to sneak a glance at the couple behind her, but as soon as she lifted her gaze, she saw their reflections in the mirror across from her.Coincidentally, Beatrice happened to lift her gaze as well. When their eyes met in the mirror, Noelle immediately calmed down."What are you doing here?" she finally asked Hendrix."To bring you out to eat," answered Hendrix matter-of-factly."I'm already in the elevator. Wait for me in the parking lot," Noelle replied quickly, pressing the button for the first floor.Beatrice stood silently behind her. She was the first to step out when the elevator arrived at the first floor. Her companion, seeming a bit slow to react, didn't say anything but gave Noelle a brief glance before following Beatrice out.Noelle quickly pressed the

Even until now, Hendrix hadn't admitted to liking her—not even once. But then again, even if he did, Noelle wasn't sure she'd believe him, and that made her desire an answer even more.Hendrix glanced at her briefly before asking, "What do you think?"Noelle pressed her lips together. "If you don't want to say it, forget it." She tried to pull her hand away again, prompting Hendrix to tighten his grip even more."It seems your temper has grown sharper these days," he said with a soft chuckle."My temper has always been like this, Mr. Freeman," Noelle retorted with a thin, sarcastic smile. "But of course, it's nothing compared to Sandra's and Ms. Wright's delicate charms."Her words caused Hendrix to pause for a moment. Then, he unexpectedly laughed. Without warning, he turned the steering wheel sharply and pulled the car over to the side of the road. Before Noelle could process what was happening, Hendrix leaned over her. "'Mr. Freeman'? Sounds like a certain Ms. Swanson is stil

Noelle had just returned to her flat on Serene Street when she received a call from Beatrice."Are you free?" Beatrice's tone was as clear and decisive as ever. "Let's meet."Noelle knew she couldn't avoid this meeting. And, truth be told, there were things she wanted to ask as well. So, she didn't hesitate to agree.Beatrice suggested meeting at an exclusive café, and by the time Noelle arrived, she was already settled in a private room. Beatrice was wearing a white dress as usual with her hair elegantly styled up. The passing of time seemed to have left no mark on her face—it was still as smooth and flawless as ever.As Noelle entered the private room, Beatrice smiled and gently set a cup of coffee in front of her. "Try this. It's a new batch of Blue Mountain for this year. I remember you've always liked it."Noelle thanked Beatrice. She picked up the cup and took a sip of the hot coffee."So, when did you and Hendrix get back together?" Beatrice's question came out of the bl

Dylan was like deadly poison to the Swifts. He had deliberately lured Marla away at that time. Otherwise, she wouldn't have let him go so easily. After all, Marshall was already in a coma. So, all she could do was cling tightly to Dylan and refuse to let go.But…Marla opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, yet words failed her completely at this moment. Then, a sharp alarm blared from the machine beside the bed.She immediately whipped around. She wasn't the only one who heard it. The doctors outside did, too. They rushed in instantly and pushed her aside as they began emergency resuscitation.Marla stood frozen, phone still in hand, staring blankly at Marshall on the bed. He had an oxygen mask over his face.Just days ago, he had smiled and told her that once he was free of his responsibilities, he would take her traveling around the world. He knew she had never truly moved on, so he wanted to help her in this way.All these years, no matter how willful she had

Marla returned to the hospital. She had intended to tell Dylan what happened at Roselle Court, but when she arrived at the ward, he was gone. She asked the nurse, but even the nurse didn't know. Thus, she called Dylan. The phone rang, but no one answered.Marla couldn't help but frown. She glanced at Marshall lying in the hospital bed. The emotions she had kept under control until now surged as she took in his sleeping face and graying temples. Tears began to fall uncontrollably."Honey, what should we do now?" she asked.Of course, Marshall couldn't answer.Marla's eyes reddened further. She covered her face with her hands as tears dripped down one by one.Just then, her phone rang. Seeing the number, she quickly wiped her face and composed herself before answering."Hello?""Bad news, Mrs. Swift." The voice on the other end was frantic. "Mr. Stein has run off with the company's funds."Marla listened, but she gave no reaction or reply. The caller waited anxiously for her re

Noelle quickly added, "But don't worry. I'm not hurt or anything. It was just a slap."By the end of the sentence, she started to lose confidence, so her voice unconsciously dropped a few notches.Hendrix let out a cold laugh. "Just a slap? And you think that's not serious? What would qualify as serious to you? Beating you until you're paralyzed? This is our home. You expect me to just let it slide when someone barges in and hits you?"With each word, his anger seemed to escalate. He pressed his lips into a tight line before he abruptly turned to leave.Noelle quickly grabbed him. "What are you going to do?""Let go.""Don't act impulsively. You're scaring me like this."Her words made Hendrix freeze mid-step. As if afraid he'd still leave, Noelle clung tightly to his waist and looked up at him.Even though Hendrix didn't say anything, he did seem to be much calmer. After a pause, Noelle added, "Besides, I didn't take it lying down.""You hit her back?""Well, no. But I argu

When Hendrix returned, Noelle was still engrossed in the files on her computer—so much so she didn't even notice he had come back."What are you looking at?" Hendrix whispered into her ear.Startled, she instinctively moved to block the screen before turning to ask, "How do you walk without making any sound?"Hendrix glanced at her computer screen. There was nothing scandalous—just some of her past work, things he had already seen.He had even bought all of her published works. For a while, anyone entering his office would spot, amid stacks of documents, a few brightly colored comic books on his desk. The covers featured intimate poses between a man and a woman. Normally, this wouldn't be noteworthy, but paired with Hendrix's image, the contrast was jarring. He knew what people whispered behind his back, but he simply ignored them. Now, with just one look at her screen, he could pinpoint exactly where the story had progressed. Oh, the male lead was about to kneel in the rain to

"At the time, Hendrix actually had no reason to target you and Mr. Swift," Noelle said.Marla froze for a moment. "W-what?""Isn't that true?" Noelle looked at her with genuine confusion in her eyes. "The only reason Hendrix dragged you and Mr. Swift into this was because you helped Dylan.""If you truly wanted me to live well, as you claim, you would never have let him take me away like that. That's why Hendrix came after you. And when you realized I was still alive, this was the outcome."Marla had no rebuttal."I already found out about what happened to Seline, and I'm grateful she saved Rosie. If possible, I'd gladly take her place in caring for you both. But ultimately, Rosie and I owe Seline, not you or Mr. Swift. In fact, the connection is faint at best."The moment you became Dylan's accomplice, whatever shred of obligation I owed toward you and Mr. Swift was paid in full. As for your current situation, I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do."Marla had arrived brimming

Marla hadn't held back, and Noelle's cheek immediately flushed red.The household staff standing nearby paled at the sight and rushed forward to block Marla."Get out of my way!" Marla snarled through clenched teeth. "Noelle, you're nothing but an ungrateful bitch! After everything Seline did for you—if it weren't for her, you'd be long dead!"Back then, you lived worse than a stray dog left out in the cold. Seline helped you so much—she even died saving Rosie! And this is how you repay us, her parents?"Marla was hysterical. The household staff tried to shield Noelle while calling Hendrix. But Noelle stopped them. Then, she stepped forward to face Marla directly."Mrs. Freeman." The household staff looked worried, but Noelle ignored them. She stood before Marla and asked, "I have a question for you.""What is it? "But didn't Noelle lose her memories?" Marla asked."Who knows if she's truly forgotten or just pretending? But that doesn't matter because even if she has, the fact remains that Seline died saving Rosie, no?""That's true.""Yet, she's now working with Hendrix to take you and Mr. Swift down. Don't you think it's wrong of her to do that?"Marla didn't respond."So, will you talk to her?" Dylan pressed.Marla frowned at him."It's chaotic outside now. The shareholders are screaming for Mr. Swift to take responsibility, but how could you bear to drag him into this mess when he's still lying unconscious?"His words snapped Marla out of her daze. "You're right.""Don't worry. I'll take care of Mr. Swift. Right now, the priority is stopping Hendrix as soon as possible."Marla glanced at Dylan, then at the man lying in bed—Marshall still hadn't woken up.The doctor said Marshall was out of danger, but no one could say when he would regain consciousness. Hendrix's prediction was correct. That very night, Marshall was indeed rushed to the hospital. In all honesty, he should have anticipated their plan's failure. But what truly shattered him was Dylan's betrayal.Everyone close to him knew just how much trust he had placed in Dylan. He had even secretly discussed with Marla that it might not be a bad idea to leave their fortune to Dylan after their passing. After all, if not for Dylan, the two of them might not have survived the grief that followed Seline's death. In their eyes, he was no different from a son.Yet, Marshall never imagined that the person he trusted so deeply would ultimately stab him in the back.As he lay unconscious in the hospital bed, Marla unleashed all her fury and resentment toward Dylan."How could you do this? After all the trust we placed in you! Do you even have any humanity left?" She was practically screaming at the top of her lungs. At this point, there was nothing she could do. The situation of the

"You barely ate anything back there, so I'm taking you for buffalo wings," Hendrix said."Buffalo wings?" Noelle turned to him in surprise.Hendrix caught her hand. "Yeah. You used to love it. Do you want to go?"A soft smile played on his lips now—a stark contrast to the cold expression he had worn earlier when discussing Dylan and the Swifts.Yet, this version of him felt strangely familiar to Noelle. Just as she studied him, Hendrix turned to look at her. "Well?"Only then did she realize he had asked her a question. After a brief hesitation, she finally nodded. "Okay."The car smoothly changed lanes, eventually pulling up in front of a shopping mall.It was a weekend, so the place was crowded. When Hendrix led her to the buffalo wings restaurant, they were even told that there was a waitlist.Hendrix instantly frowned. He turned to ask if Noelle wanted to go somewhere else, only to find her staring fixed ahead at a warmly lit bakery, its entrance adorned with a row of cotto
