Alone in the Pack
My mother reached for my hands to calm me. "Honey, remember what your father said about behaving."
But it was too late. The anger in my eyes was already showing. I snatched my hands from hers and stood above both of my parents. “You are leaving, and you weren’t going to say anything.”
My father didn’t look at me. Instead, he looked to Alpha Ken. “Alpha, I am so sorry. Forgive her. Please continue.”
When he didn’t acknowledge me, I hit the table shaking the plates and cups around me. That finally got his attention. My father looked at me and spoke. “Zaya, please calm down.” I was hurt by him. And now everyone in the room was staring at me. I stormed out of the dining hall. Leaving everyone behind. Before I exited the dining hall, I heard the Alpha tell my father that it was ok and not to worry.
I found myself pacing back in forth in my room. I could not believe this was happening to me. My parents had never treated me like this. We were only in the pack 24 hours, and they were already new people to me. With that thought, my mind quickly shifted to the pack. They probably thought I was some kind of brat reacting like that in front of everyone. I never lost my temper before. Especially with my parents. But I couldn’t control the feeling inside my core. My entire face felt red with heat.
After arguing with myself for at least an hour, I started to grab my belongings. 'There is no way I’m staying here without my parents. This was their dream to join a pack, not mines.' I said to myself as I grabbed my bag and phone. How dare they think they could just dump me here while they travel for only the moon goddess knows how long.
Just as I snatched the door to my room open, my mother and father were standing there with their hands in the air as if they were about to knock. With a shameful look on their face, they asked, "Can we come in Zaya?" Their calmness was infuriating to me.
"No need, I was just leaving." I tried to brush past them, but my father grabbed my arms, dragging me back into the room.
"Listen Zaya. We are sorry we could not tell you sooner. But if we would have said anything before, we came, you would have tried to stay back home. And the world isn't safe for a wolf to be alone. You need the pack."
I pointed to my mother. "But you said I would be safe in the human world. So long as I did not exhibit any of my strengths. And we have been in without a pack for this long. Why now?"
"Yes, I did say that, and I meant that. But soon, you will come of age and get your wolf. You will need the help of the pack to control yourself. They can help you in ways our parents couldn't. We both know what it was like to grow up without a pack. Friends who understood what you were going through. And family you could always lean on. You need a pack." She cupped my face, trying to calm me.
"But you are my family, and I do not know these people. Why can't you see? I will be alone. here?" I contested, not wanting to hear anything else they had to say.
My father caressed my back, while my mother held me close. "That’s the point of a pack. You will never be alone Zaya. Someone will always be here. And the Alpha will always protect his pack."
Tears climbed down my face as I sobbed a little more. "How long will you guys be gone."
"It might be a year. Maybe two." My father said so calmly. As if they were only leaving for a few hours or a few days.
"We will be back before you know it. And we can always let you know where we will be and you can come to visit. And of course, you can call us anytime." My mother pleaded with me.
"When…do…you…leave?" I asked sobbing between my words.
"We leave at first dawn."
I cried a little more, not wanting my parents to go away. They both held me until I fell asleep. When I awoke, my room was empty. Nothing but a note on my nightstand.
'My Dearest Zaya,
We hate to leave you, but we must leave early; if we are to make our first destination by the first moon. We know this is hard but in time we hope you will bless us with your forgiveness. In the meantime, remember to be mindful of the pack rules. As you already see it is very different from our life. But we know in our heart, it will be very good for you to learn the ways of the wolf. We love you very much.
Love, Papa'
I held the letter close to my heart and closed my eyes. The tears began swelling in my eyes again. I was truly alone in the world now. No matter how hard my parents tried to convince me the pack was my new family, I could never understand how a forced bond made someone my family. So, what if we were all werewolves. The only family I will ever know has completely abandoned me and is heading halfway across the world. If something was to happen to me, how would they reach me in time? I wasn’t sure why, but my feelings were magnified at that moment, making my chest feel heavier than normal.
I pulled the covers over my head and tried to hold the letter as close to me as possible. Keeping it safe from anything else. Like it was the last time I would ever hold my parents again.
It was not until I heard the pounding on my door that I realized I had fallen back to sleep. I rolled over and ignored the knocking. I was determined to stay in my bed and forget where I was.
A few hours later, the knocking came again, only this time it was much stronger. I could see outside my window; the sun was already setting. My entire day had been spent inside this room, locked away from the world. The banging on my door persisted. The loud noise bounced off the walls. I sat up and grabbed my cover, frightened by the noise. I heard the door unlock, then in walked Alpha Ken.
"Alpha?"
Dinner with The Alpha Alpha Ken was standing in my doorway. His head almost reached the top of the door frame. "Is it ok if I come in Zaya?" "It's your house." I sat up on the bed and he took a seat on my couch. "We missed you at breakfast Zaya." "I wasn’t hungry." "I understand you may not be feeling well, but we have rules here and it's important to abide by them." When I didn't respond he continued talking. "Listen, it may not seem to be that big of a deal but when we come together for breakfast in the morning, it's more than just a rule. It's our way of showing up for each other. It's our way of communicating and showing everyone that no matter what happens, we are still here. I can't imagine what is like to just be thrown in this life but I promise you will learn to love it." I was shocked. I thought Alpha’s were supposed to be hard asses. Rude and unkind to show strength. But Alpha Ken was kind. "O
A Morning Run The next morning I was awakened by my phone ringing. I reached around the nightstand until I found it. "Hello," I said with a raspy voice. "Zaya? Are you okay? I called you all day yesterday." I could sense the irritation in his voice. "Luke, I’m sorry. I wasn’t feeling well. I literally slept all day. What time is it?" I asked seeing the dark sky through my window. "It’s almost 5:30 in the morning. I was getting ready for school. Did I wake you?" "Yes, you did. But it is ok I was about to get up anyway. I figured I might run before the day starts. I saw a path that leads into the forest." "I’m glad there is a place for you to run. I know how important that is to you. But I’m more excited to hear your voice. How are you?" I blushed at his words. "I miss you too Luke. And I’m fine." "I wish I had more time to talk but I’m going to be late for practice. I just wanted to get yo
Training Day Did the Alpha just say what I think he said? A rogue attack was coming. I could hear some of the pack members gasping in surprise. Some even growled out of anger. "Do not worry. You warriors will get your chances to protect what is ours. I am taking some of our most skilled warriors to help diffuse the fighting. We leave in a few days. For now, everything will continue as normal." I looked to Godric and Alex. They both looked unfazed by anything the Alpha just said. Maybe that was the role of an Alpha’s son. To seem strong when everyone else is panicking. Alpha Ken left breakfast along with the Luna and Beta. A few other people followed them out. No doubt to discuss the matter further. "You should eat little wolf," Godric said feeling my eyes on him. "Training won’t be as easy. Especially for someone who hasn't trained in years." I listened to him and ate my food in silence. All the while, watching everyone
New Friends I embraced myself. Expecting her claws to dig into me. After a few seconds and no contact, I opened my eyes to see a large hand around her wrist. "Sophie!" I heard Godric’s voice. "You know better. This training is to strengthen your human side, not your wolf. Wolves are not to be released on the field." He spoke to her in a tone I haven’t heard from him before. It was cold. I could hear her wolf whimpering as her eyes returned to their brown color. He let her arm go. "You could have hurt them. Neither have their wolf yet. How would they have defended themselves?" When she didn’t answer, he said, “You are dismissed for the day." "Why? I didn’t touch either of them!" She protested. He shot her a look, and she quickly closed her mouth. She left the field without saying another word. Then he looked at the rest of us girls and simply said, "You girls can move onto the crossbow training." We made
No One To Call Now I realized where the panic, fear, and anger had come from. There was only one way Godric could become Alpha. According to Anna, either Alpha Ken would have to give up his title or he would have to die. And since Alpha Ken was nowhere to be found I assumed the latter. I swallowed hard realizing the worst had come. "Are you guys saying what I think you're saying? Is Alpha Ken dead?" The pit of my stomach began to knot over. I was sick just thinking of the thought. Alpha Ken had been nothing but kind to me since I got here. He made sure everyone made me feel welcome while my parents were away. And then it hit me. These two had just lost their father. "I'm…I'm so sorry to hear that. Are you guys OK?" Alex could hardly make eye contact with me. And Godric wouldn't stop looking at me. Finally, he said, "There's something else you should know." "Godric. Gently." Alex said. "Gently." Godric nodded to
Changes I finished my food as I wallowed in deep thought. I was grateful for Anna bringing me the food. In a way, it made me a little better. I gathered the empty plates and carried my tray downstairs. I was almost knocked over by some pack members. They were all walking towards the same area. I stop one of the girls. "Where's everybody going?" "Pack meeting in 10 minutes." She said and kept it moving. I dropped my tray in the kitchen and followed everybody to the meeting. I didn't have to go far. The pack members were starting to crowd the area in front of the Alphas house. Alex and Godric were front and center along with the three men I saw in the office earlier. I searched for Anna but couldn't find her, so I just took my place standing next to people I didn't know. "Listen up!" Alex said in a voice I had never heard him use before. Instead of his kind, sweet, carefree voice; all I heard was authority. Everyone else must hav
Signs of Something New The stinging in my hand subsided soon after I stopped touching Alex. "Are you ok?" He looked at me with concern. I fanned my hand back and forward. "I'll see you later. Thanks for the walk by the way." Alex watched with confusion on his face. I tried not to be rude, dismissing him in such a manner. But I really needed to talk to my friend. I grabbed Anna by the hand and dragged her into her house. I paced around her living room several times before she finally stopped me. "Okay. Are you going to tell me what's wrong with you?" Anna had been like a teacher to me these past few weeks. She was like an endless pit of information. Showing me the ins and outs of pack life. Showing me the land. And provided me basic information of hierarchy, so I knew who not to piss off. I knew she would be able to answer my questions. I blurted out. "I need you to tell me about getti
I Want To Help The next day, I was awakened by the sound of trees falling. Anna was nowhere to be found. She must have let me sleep in while she tended to her duties. I grabbed my things and headed home. As I walked back to the Alphas house, I could see the trees were being cleared. And makeshift homes were being put up in their place. They must be getting ready for the people coming from the other pack. I watched as everyone pitched in. They each had their jobs here. Everyone had a place in the pack. There were trainers, cooks, cleaners, builders, and guards. I seemed to be the only one without something to do. Even Anna was off handling the Luna’s affairs while she was out. When I reached the gate to the Alpha’s house, Sophie was coming down the driveway. She seemed to be in a better mood than everyone else, who were all still sad by the news of Alpha Ken. I tried to pass her with my head down. I wasn't in the mood for our ri
Zaya POV“I won't go!!!” I shouted as I packed my bags. It was six in the morning and we were supposed to be in the car within twenty minutes ago.I was stalling, trying to get my point across.“We don’t need to visit the Black Woods pack.” “Yes, we do, Zaya.”“No…we don’t!” My voice was raised and I had no doubt we were waking the neighbors with our disagreement. He sighed loudly. “We cannot skip the Black Woods. Especially for the reason of simply not liking them.” He retorted.“Simple?” I questioned and then whisper shouted. “You think my reason is simple? He made my friend a rogue for being a victim. For defending herself.”He sighed again as if I was frustrating him. “I never said your reason was simple. It's no reason to cancel a visit.”“It is in my eyes.” I said while slowing my packing. In a more quieted voice, I said, “That man hurt our Audrey. What makes you think she wants to go back.”I was sure if she didn’t know now, she was going to know as soon as we hit the road.“I
Godric POVWe reassembled and began making our way to the next destination as if nothing had happened. But in this car, time had stopped. I could feel the surge of emotions coming from Zaya. She sat close to me, but her arms were wrapped tightly around her body as she continued to look out the window.“Are you okay?” I asked her.I could feel her vulnerability and anger. The mate bond was tearing at my heart.“Talk to me Zaya.”She shook her head as the tears filled the corner of her eyes. “I shouldn’t be mad or sad. I could only imagine how the rogue pack felt about when they….when he….I know they hate me.”“They don’t hate you. They hate us.”She turned to me just as a tear tumbled down her cheek. “They hate me. He didn’t call you names. He didn’t speak your name as if it tasted bitter on his tongue. Not like when he said my name.”She faced the window again.I had no words for her so I wrapped my arm around her back and drew her closer to me. She was exposed in ways she hadn’t b
Godric POVMy brother mind linked me to stay inside our vehicle. He was taking charge and keeping to the protocol we had gone over multiple times. I didn’t mind. There were only ten wolves I could see, and they seemed to be in a weakened state.I lowered my window to hear the conversation between him and their supposed leader. The one who stood closer to Alex. The one who crossed his arms to seem at ease as the others stood rigid.“State your business!” Alex shouted from a distance. One of his main rules was for everyone to stay at least twenty feet from any rogue we would come in contact with.Their leader huffed. “This is a public road. You state your business here.” He retorted. The male was a scrawny guy who stood with so much confidence. The others around him laughed as if he had told the joke of the year. But I didn’t see anything funny. All I could see were ten wolves looking to die.Sensing trouble in the air, I placed my hand on the handle of the door to exit the car. Then a
POV ZayaVisiting so many packs in such a short time had my mind overflowing. It was stuffed with the knowledge of the different cultures. And the many faces that came with that knowledge clouded my memories.I met five Alpha’s and four Luna’s. Alpha Christian was unmated, which is why he greeted us alone. I asked why he never took a chosen mate and he said he didn’t believe in anything the Moon Goddess did not gift him. I wasn’t sure how he remained Alpha without a Luna by his side. Many wolves believed that an Alpha needed a mate for the pack to survive. Strength through Unity is what they often require of an Alpha. Knowing that had me looking at Godric and wondering what would have happened if he had never come to get me. If he had never fought to be with me.Would I have heard of him taking a chosen mate? Maybe a political match? Maybe even making Sophia his Luna despite her attitude. She loved him and would have done anything to be his Luna. Not to mention her strength that was a
POV ZayaThe Tour to visit every pack under Godric’s reign began a few weeks after my third trimester. Evidence of my rounding belly was now noticeable beneath my clothing. We packed up a few SUVs and headed out first thing after breakfast. I would miss all of the smiling faces that lined up along the main roads leading to our borders to bid us farewell.Alex and Audrey traveled in the SUV behind us. The other vehicles carried nothing but guards and a few Elders. It was strange traveling like the president. Safely pawned from one set of guards to the next every few hours. When I saw the soldiers loaded into their respective cars, I kept wondering how all this would look to a human. Ten cars full of fighters traveling through major cities across North America. And then I realized, it wouldn’t look like anything at all.We drove around all the major metropolitan areas on the map to get to our first stop. I guess Alex wasn’t going to risk us drawing too much attention. On the way, we sto
Godric POVZaya was worried. And she had every right to be. If Mia’s attitude was any indication, Mason had a pack of wolves that hated the current Luna Queen.Who knows what will happen once the rogues find out that she is living happily and carrying the future King?“You know she could be carrying a girl.” Alex teased.“I know.”“I’m just saying, you keep referencing the baby as the future King. Like you are trying to will it so. That’s no how genetics works, brother.”“No, but I could hope.”He chuckled missing the dread behind my words. It’s not that I hoped the baby was a boy, it’s that I hoped he would actually be the next Alpha King. I hoped Zaya wouldn’t have to endure the pain that will follow we cannot make him so.“I think we should double the security team traveling with us. Just to be safe.”“You really are paranode.”“I’m Beta. I’m supposed to think of the things you do not.”I couldn’t argue with him there. It was what he trained for. To think of all the things that I n
Zaya POVAs soon as Godric entered our room, I started questioning him. My nerves had been bad since the moment he left the pack lands to meet with Mason and Mia.This would be his first time seeing Mason since the death of Evander and I was worried the meeting wouldn’t go well. What of it was a trap? What if they retaliated?Audrey kept me company the entire time, but still I remained anxious.“How was it?” I asked as soon as the bedroom door closed. He smiled slightly while approaching me. The smell of him quickly calmed my soul. He leaned down to kiss my cheek before answering.“It was okay.”“Just okay? What did you guys talk about? Were they hostile? Are there any signs of vengeance?I could tell from the look in his eyes, something happened.“Yes, it was okay. We talked about his new recruits. And the only thing hostile was Mia’s attitude.”I smirked. “Ah, yes. The infamous Mia.”I mentioned Mia while I was telling him about my life as the tribute. I told him that out of all the
Godric POVTensions ran high as the Elders debated Mason’s intentions. They held a meeting less than an hour after our return.Elder Grey yelled across the room. “We cannot assume they will start another war!”Elder Elias responded, “We cannot assume they will do nothing to avenge Evander.”One by one, they all started to shout over each other.“We’re talking about rogues here. They aren’t trained enough to lead a large-scale attack.”“You don’t need training to shift or carry a weapon.” Another said.Others agreed with him.“And you don’t need a sign from the Moon Goddess to know Alpha Mason is planning something.”Alex’s ears perked up at that comment.Elder John spoke up, “How are you going to defend the pack and we have yet to find out how Evander crossed our borders unprotected.”More whispers and more voices echoed in the room. The Elders were angry and impatient, but so was I. This unruly conduct wasn’t helping matters. Remembering my fathers words to keep the Elders in order,
POV Godric1 Month LaterIt took too long to get a response from Mason. He accepted the letters from the messengers that I sent to his territory, though he wouldn’t let them go past the border.I don’t blame him for being cautious, but I don’t appreciate my people not being able to gather any details. And I also don’t appreciate Mason’s lack of response. The first two letters, my people returned empty handed. The third letter, my people returned with a promise that he would call soon to talk. The elders were getting antsy and so was I. I expected a phone call within the week, but nothing. Then I realized, he was definitely stalling. He didn’t have a number to call. Every time we met with Evander, it was face to face. And agreeing to meet for the truce was done by letter. So I sent one last letter requesting him to meet on neutral ground today. We had much to discuss. The recent foot traffic from rogues was growing by the week and none of the surrounding Alpha’s were happy.Though none
