I closed my front door, crossed the street, and then I knocked on Paul’s door. His dad opened it up. He had this confused look on his face.
“Yes?”
“Is Paul home still,” I asked.
“Yes he is. He just came downstairs for breakfast. Why?”
“I just would like to know if he’d like a ride to school with me or not,” I said to him. Paul’s father pulled off his glasses that he had on, and rubbed his eyes.
He then leaned against the doorway, and raised an eyebrow at me. “Aren’t you Tammy from across the street?”
“Yes, sir I am. My sister Annabeth and I reside there.”
“Can I ask just what it is that you’d like with my son? I’ve never seen you knocking on this door before.”
I had to think of the ultimate, horrible lie.
“Well I’m surprised Paul hasn’t mentioned me before. Although we just made it official just a couple days ago. I’m Paul’s girlfriend.” I then flashed him a brilliant smile, hoping he’d buy it.
Paul’s father, Mr Kai, rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I don’t know. What do you see in my son, first of all?”
The question took me back a bit, “um, he’s unique and different. He sticks out from the crowd.”
“Sticks out? Is that a good or bad thing?”
I mentally face palmed in my head and I stuttered out, “Oh no. I- I didn’t mean anything like that. Oh, um... I meant that when he sticks out, he’s different from everybody.”
“How does he stick out?”
“He sticks out in a very good way. He’s funny and nice and-and…” I ran out of things to say, until I remembered what Paul said about my eyes. “And he also gives very good compliments; it makes you feel happy and alive.”
Mr. Kai looked at me funny and sighed as he looked at my bright green PT Cruiser across the street and looked back at me. A breeze went through the air and I caught the scent of a dog, and I tried to remember if Paul had a dog or not. “Do you have a dog, Mr. Kai?”
He looked startled and almost seemed to glare at me as he said, “no we don’t. Why do you ask?”
I licked my lips, “I just thought I smelled one, that's all.” He shifted from one foot to another, suddenly looking nervous.
“I’m sorry to cut the conversation short, Miss Tammy, but I have work to get done. I’ll send Paul out in a minute, goodbye.” And with that, he opened the door and was about to slam it; but not before giving me a look with golden eyes. I took a sharp intake of breath as I know only one breed that had that color of eyes, Werewolves.
He slammed the door and I went across the street to my car and heated it up as it was chilly this morning. I started cleaning out my car a little when Paul slid in the passenger seat next to me.
“What a fucking weird week this is turning out to be,” Paul said as he hugged his book bag against his chest.
I looked over at him and sniffed inwards. Paul didn’t smell like a dog like Paul’s father did. Maybe I imagined it all. Remembering he was there I replied, “and just think, this is only the beginning of what I think could be a beautiful friendship.” I then started the car and pulled out of his driveway.
“Who’s that guy on your t-shirt,” he asked, pointing.
“Marilyn Manson, a singer. Saw him live once, he’s a good guy. Good Vampire. Ever heard of him?”
“No,” Paul said. He then turned and looked out of the window. I sighed and picked up speed to our school.
“So… how did you sleep last night,” I asked. I was trying to start a conversation with him so he wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable. I knew my car was a mess, and I knew that he probably wouldn’t like the Mountain Dew bottles everywhere, despite the fact that there was less in here since I cleaned it out a little.
“I slept well I guess…” I looked over at him. He looked really sad and uncomfortable and he sighed as he leaned his head against the window and he closed his eyes. I felt sorry for the poor guy.
“Hey, what’s the matter?”
“I just found out this morning that my dad isn’t who I think he is.”
My hands tightened up on my steering wheel. “Oh?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, what is he?”
“He’s my stepfather. My real father took off when I was born, mom hasn’t heard from him since; even though she’s tried to get a hold of him,” Paul said as his voice cracked a little.
“I have a family history project that’s due in one of my classes, and I was asking my dad some questions… But some of his answers didn’t match up. That’s when they told me he’s my step-father.”
I sighed. So that’s why Paul didn’t smell like a wolf, he wasn’t one. “Tammy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you okay?”
I looked over at him, “Yes. I’m fine. Why do you ask?”
He shifted a little in his seat and started to stare at my mouth, “Your fangs are poking out through your mouth. You told me they do that when you’re really stressed, what are you stressed about?”
I sighed and my fangs retracted, “nothing. It’s nothing that you need to worry about Paul.”
We rode in silence for a few more minutes but then all of sudden Paul asked me if I was going to the Spring Dance that we were having. “I don’t think so, Paul. I hate dancing, and what’s worse is that there’ll be tons of teenagers there who hate me and trust me the feeling is mutual. I just want to finish my sentence out there, graduate, and get the fuck out of dodge. ”
“Oh.”
“Why do you ask though?”
“Well, I was hoping that you would go with me. But I guess not, huh?”
“Nope. Sorry for bursting your bubble.” I looked over at him and he had shrunk so far down in my car seat, that he could’ve been a part of it. “Hey now, there’s plenty of girls at our school. You can’t tell me I’m the only one that caught your eye, Paul.”
“You are. You’re different from the people there. When you walk down the hallway, you hold yourself up high and there’s nobody that can bring you down. All the kids are scared of you, but awed as well. I’ve heard some of the preppy girls talking amongst themselves and they say that if you didn’t look like such a Goth, they’d consider you to be a part of their group.”
I looked at Paul weird and said, “Paul; I could care less about the preppy bitches out there. But thank you for what you said beforehand. And besides, you could surprise some girl who is quiet. What about Kayla? I heard that she’s not that bad looking either.”
Paul seemed to lighten up a little at the mention of her name and he said, “Okay. Maybe I’ll think about her.”
I patted him on the knee as I parked the car, “Atta boy!”
He got out, but not before taking my hand in his. “Tammy, I know you said that there will never be an 'Us'. But, maybe you can think about it sometime? It’s a long shot for me to ask you this, but it had to be said. I’ll see you around Tammy. Goodbye,” he said as he left my car for good and went inside of the school.
I should’ve told him the lie I told his father. Come to think of it, I’m really not sure what possessed me to even say something so ridiculous. I could’ve told his step-father that I was just a really good friend of his. Why’d I have to go say something stupd like that? Once Mr. Kai asks Paul about his newly found girlfriend I can only imagine the look of surprise on his face. Maybe I should think about going to that stupid spring dance with him; just because I’m a half-vampire and my life is ruined doesn’t mean I should drag Paul down with me.
I sighed and shook my head as I thought of that possibility. I reached behind me to grab my bag, closed my car door, locked all the doors, and then I headed towards Hell.
"Annabeth, your sister here is out of control. We found her smoking in the bathroom, we took away one pack of cigarettes, but then she wiped out another cigarette from her bra. Is she getting these from you?” the principal asked. They found me smoking. Come on, who cares anymore? It was after school hours now, and it was starting to get dark out. Who has parent-teacher conferences this late? Oh yeah, that’s right. It’s a Friday, so they want to keep you from doing something fun. I rolled my eyes at my balding principal.“Yes, I know this. It’s still a little hard trying to keep her from doing bad things when I go to nursing school, and then trying to balance the job that I have as well. I’m thinking about hiring a babysitter for her,” my sister said as she gave me the evil eye.“Is there something else that I should know?” This guy obviously didn’t have kids. I looked at his finger. Huh, there was a wedding ring on there before Ann came in.My sister hesitated, looking th
I was reading Mister B. Gone by: Clive Barker, a book about Demons, when my sister came in. She was pale, and you could tell that she was crying. “Hey, um, you want to get some pizza?” I smiled weakly, said sure, and put down my book. While we were in town, I looked at Pizza Hut, drooling at how wonderful it would be to taste the sauce on my tongue again. It has been awhile since I have had Pizza Hut, my sister was trying to cut down on us eating out so much. But my sister didn’t stop. She kept driving.I couldn’t believe it. We were passing the pizza place! “Hey, Pizza Hut's back there,” I gestured with my thumb. I looked in the side mirror of the car and saw it going farther and farther in the distance. My sister didn’t bother to look at me as she bit down on her lip.She sighed and said slowly, “we’re not going out to eat, Tammy. You are going to stay at a hospital where they help teens like you every day with the problems they have. This is what’s best for all of us.”“
Later on that night after my sister had finally gone to sleep, I snuck out to meet Thomas and Darien. When I got there, the first thing that Darien did was throw a bag of A negative at me. As I drank my bag of A negative blood; I realized it didn’t taste as good as O negative, but it would have to do.“Now Tammy, while I was away I was having reports done on you. Both Darien and… another source both informed me that you were not drinking human blood anymore. That even when Darien offered you a bag when you invited him inside, you still refused it and kicked him out… Even after you told me you would start drinking normally again,” Thomas said quietly.I could tell that I had really upset him. He wasn’t yelling or even looking at me, rather talking to me like I was a child in trouble. Which I guess I was, in a way.“I was not feeling myself, I guess you could say. I… just didn’t feel up to it.”In the darkness of the woods Thomas said, “Depressed, Tammy, is more like the word to
I was on my sofa when Thomas gave me my blood coffee instead of my blood cocoa. There was something about mixing blood in with coffee that tasted oh so wonderful, and besides I needed the energy for what I was about to be told. “Now then, are we comfortable?” he asked. I nodded my head yes. He put his arm around me so I could snuggle closer to him. I sipped my coffee silently, not caring if the hotness burned my tongue.“Tammy?”“Yes?”“There’s some bad news that concerns you.”“Me? What bad news do you bear about me, Tom?”Tom breathed in deep and let out his breath slowly, “Tammy, the Vampire Council wants to move you up to Canada with them in their top secret facility. And then they want you to have a one-night stand with a mortal and get pregnant.”I spat out my blood-coffee and looked at him horrified. “THAT’S what the Vampire Council needed to discuss with you? That’s what was SO important about you taking off? What in the hell are they thinking? I don’t want any crot
“I’m not going to tell her! Not yet, she doesn’t need to know,” Thomas yelled at me.“Look, she has to know sooner or later about the Hybrid plans. “Why didn’t you pick somebody else?!” I shouted at Thomas. “Why me? Screw your damn feelings, I want the truth!” I flipped over a chair. It was the next day and we hadn’t heard anything from them. The only order I had was to stay here in my room until someone came and got me. It was only eight at night, and I swear to God, I was slowly starting to lose my mind!Thomas picked up the chair and calmly put it back where it was supposed to go. “Tammy, I told you the truth on the plane ride here. I thought you were…”“Shut the hell up! You’ve lied to me about everything else, why start telling the truth now,” I yelled at him. “I don’t want to have this baby if that’s all they want to use it for! Don’t you think that maybe they could find somebody else,” I asked.Thomas shook his head, “they don’t want to wait so long anymore. That’s why you are their only hope, Tammy. I just wish…” Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Thomas opened it up, and tried to slam it shut again,
She was running through the woods laughing at the game she was playing, looking back every so often to see how far behind her sister was, and then she saw The Man. She came to a halt, almost tripping over a tree branch in the process as her hair whipped forward and she stared at him. He was dressed in nothing more than a simple gray t-shirt with blue pants and what appeared to just be regular boots. He seemed like a harmless man, but the way he stared at her made her want to run and hide from him. He was standing and staying still, breathing heavily, reeking of something that made her gag. “Little girl,” he had slowly said to her. His own voice startled him and made him gag when he smelled his own breath. The man he had feasted on was drunk, so Thomas hadn’t the need to knock him out after drinking from him. Clearly, the smell of his alcoholism had lingered on Thomas' breath along with the man’s blood as well. But it only bugged Thomas for a moment as he saw the girl before h
“I’m not! I track down and kill your kind! My only interest is finding out why Lucian wants you so badly,” said Selene, the heroine of Underworld. I watched the movie intently on my bed as I unconsciously rubbed the spot where I was bitten when I was six years old. I gazed down at my left shoulder, even though the bite marks had faded long ago it had left something else behind in return. Just like Blade from the movies, I am classified as a Daywalker. Meaning, I can walk freely around in the sun without worrying about it burning me into ashes, but I still craved human blood like any other Vampire. Vampires didn’t have to face my evil torture though; school. I felt a cool breeze ruffle my hair and I got up to close the doors to my balcony, but not before enjoying the breeze on my face. I shivered, closed the doors to my balcony, and crawled back on my bed. My thirst was coming back stronger every night it seemed, the shivers were a good indication of that. The more hungry yo

I watched my sister go down the stairs, holding her head up high. She thought she knew everything there was to know about Thomas. But that wasn’t true, I knew him a long time before she did. I sighed and rubbed my eyes as I fought to hold back tears. This was a lot harder on me than I ever thought that it would’ve been.I went into my parent’s old bedroom where I slept at night, ever since I made it my own. I picked up my cell phone and pressed number three for the speed dial. The phone rang, and rang, and just when I was about to give up a groggy voice picked up, “Hello?”“Thomas? This is Annabeth. What did I tell you?”I could hear chuckling over the other end of the phone and I growled and felt my fangs prod out. “Oh, Annabeth, don’t you remember what we did to her? She thinks that her only supplier can be me, and unless she figures it out or breaks it, only then will she realize what we’ve done to her and then she’ll wonder why.”“And when will that be? I accidently ended up staying out all night, learning all I could from Darien about Thomas. A part of me felt guilty for treating him that way, for snapping on him. But a bigger part of me felt relieved, that a huge weight had been taken off my shoulders. I wondered how tonight would go, if Thomas would show up at all.My sister didn’t go to work until noon, and she was asleep when I left, so I thought that she would still be sleeping. That was a big mistake. When I walked in through the door, she grabbed my arm.“Where the hell have you been? I called the cops and, as far as I’m still concerned, they’re still looking for you! Where were you exactly?” I didn’t tell her, I wanted to tell her, but I couldn’t. I tried prying her away from me, but her manicured nails sunk into my arms.“Where were you? I want an answer NOW, young lady. Were you at a party? Were you drinking? What were you doing?”“I was out drinking blood,” I replied coldly. There, she had her answer. What s
