Clarissa
When Clarissa woke in the morning, she felt much stronger than she had the day before. She could not rescue her mother if she were lying in bed, right? She stood up and looked out the window. The sun was starting to wink at her from beyond the mountains.
She got up and went to the bathroom, where she cleaned up and readied for the day. She dressed in a simple brown cotton dress- her best traveling attire. As soon as she left the bathroom, she headed to the front door.
She was determined to get her mom back and she would have to start in town. She could find some supplies and maybe a party to travel with there. Perhaps she could arrange a hunting party to find the rogue werecats and bring them to justice.
As her hand landed on the door knob, Stefan cleared his throat behind her. “Headed out already? I was making breakfast, well burning breakfast.” He joked.
“I do not have time for that! I have to figure out how to get to where my mom is.” She said steadily, readying herself for an argument. She was a grown woman and could make decisions for herself!
“Well, you wouldn’t make such a great detective. You should start looking for clues close to home first.” He teased her lightly.
She made a sour face. “Why? Do you have something more to share?”
“Certainly my little lady. Come eat. You will be grateful later. This is a journey we are embarking on and will not be over so soon. Food gives us the strength to go on.”
Why did he have to lecture her so?
“Fine! But I expect to know what you do before the meal finishes.” She pouted.
It was awful of him to come at her with such logic. As she entered the kitchen, she was greeted by the most wonderful smells.
“What are you making?” She questioned.
He lifted an eyebrow in feigned curiosity. Then when he heard her stomach grumble, he grinned. Fine! She was hungry. Whatever!
“Strips of meat and fat fried on the fire with some of your chickens’ eggs. It makes a great breakfast where I come from.”
As she took her first bite, she was surprised at the wonderful taste. The aroma had been divine but the way it tasted was out of this world. Clarissa realized her family would never have been able to afford this, even if they were the ones raising the animals that gave their life for it.
“Well, go on.” She encouraged impatiently, as she devoured the food quickly.
“I do not know if you remember the cats that attacked before you fell.” He spoke absentmindedly, remembering the details from the other night. “You took down the two young ones.” His voice held a note of pride.
She nodded. She remembered but the memory did not make sense to her.
“How?” She questioned.
“You tapped into your life force and were able to channel your energy into two separate attacks. Those were some powerful moves. How much practice and training have you had?” His voice held a fake note of disinterest.
“Training for what?” She asked, finishing the last bite of food on her plate.
He went to add more and she shook her head. No, she was full. This was more than she had ever eaten in the morning.
“For the magic that you used.” He answered shortly.
His eyes burnt into hers. It seemed as if he truly wanted to know.
“I have no training.” She admitted. His face flashed with disbelief before he nodded his head. “I didn’t even know I could do that.”
Nodding again, he sat back in his chair as if she had confirmed what he was thinking.
“You are a powerful energy witch. I am proud to call you my wife.”
The pride showed in his tone of voice. She shrugged. His admiration made her feel uncomfortable. Witch was a slang term for a woman that knew how to wield their magic.
“But you need training. It is settled!” He said, standing.
He emptied the table of their dishes with a flourish.
“What is settled? What are you talking about?” She demanded.
He was leaving her out of plans that dealt directly with her. Why did he have to be so frustrating all the time!
“I will train you in the use of your magic.” She opened her mouth to argue, but he continued talking. “You do not want to pass out like that again. You need to learn to control it before it envelopes you. If you were in a bigger battle like you are undoubtedly planning, you must know how to handle yourself.”
He made too much sense to disagree with.“Alright. But you still have told me nothing about what you know.” Exasperated, she spoke impatiently.
“Ah… yes, sorry. I got distracted by your awesomeness!” He chuckled. She scowled at him. She hated being at the center of his jokes. “Well, you left one for me to…” he paused. “Question.”
The sound of that sent chills up her spine. What method did he use to question it? She shuddered but decided to let him speak.
“I had not discovered that they had your mother and who they were before last night. But last night, he told me what they were searching for.”
She watched him as he placed his hand on her shoulder and gently yanked the necklace out from inside her shirt. She grabbed the pendant in her hand and shook her head.
“This? It’s just a trinket my parents gave me when I was little. Why would they want this? It’s worthless.”
He stepped up in front of her and met her eyes with his.
“They said it is a stolen relic and the key to something incredible.” He answered with a hint of awe in his tone.
His breath fanned her face warmly, smelling like the incredible food he had served.
Stefan’s hard masculine chest mere inches from her as his body heat caressed her skin. Clarissa swallowed against the intimate discomfort that warmed her up from the middle.
“I do not know what they are talking about.” She argued quietly.
He nodded. “I understand.” He spoke softly, out of breath. “Well, they would easily give up your mother- send her home if we were to bring it to them.”
She glanced down at her hand and then looked at him again from under her lashes.
“You mean if I give them this old worthless pendant, they will just let her go without a fight?”
He nodded. He lifted a hand to her cheek and gently stroked her skin. She swallowed back the lump that suddenly rose in her throat.
“We can bring it to them, pick her up, and make sure she gets home safe.” He promised and then ended the thought in a self-satisfied tone, “all in time for the wedding. Then we can go back to my home, and you can meet my dad.”
Clarissa Clarissa’s only response to Stefan’s statement was a sigh. There was no point in arguing it right now. But she had no intention of getting married on their return. His dreams seemed a little lofty to her. But what mattered right now was bringing her mother home safely. They could sort the rest out later. “Well then, we better be on our way.” She said and turned away from him. It was difficult to move out of the warmth of his presence but if she stayed like that much longer, she doubted she would be able to move away at all. He was captivating her. As she stepped away, the white haired girl came floating into the room. She moved so agile and quietly that Clarissa didn’t see her right aw
Arcadia whisked her away as soon as they got to town. Clarissa barely caught a glimpse of the guys headed in different directions as she was swept into a tailor shop. Arcadia took a look around the room. “Since you will be on the road,” She didn’t finish the sentence as she ran her fingers over the different cloth. A female shopkeeper came up to them. Clarissa knew her as Mrs. Thompson. She was a kind older lady who did most of the stitches on the clothes in her shop. Yet, the shop remained in her husband’s name, which didn’t bother her. She worked to provide for her family. She was short and skinny, with brown curly hair tied in a bun behind her face. Her eyes skimmed over Clarissa momentarily. But she had served Arcadia before and had been p
Arcadia Arcadia groaned as Clarissa ran out of the tent. “Why are you stressing, mija.” The low soft sound of her wolf, Ragnavard, growled in the back of her mind. Ragnavard was patrolling the perimeter on the outskirts of town. He was her secret weapon. They had bonded when she was a child. But it wasn’t the same thing as the Onyx Sage bonds. The purpose of those animals’ birth was to be the sage’s spirit animal. Her wolf was born before they created their attachment. Through the mind link, she comforted her wolf companion. “Clarissa may be more of a princess than we realized.” She mused.
Clarissa “Behold.” The purple sage’s voice demanded. The male face was gone, and she was looking at herself in its place. But she did not recognize where she was. Maybe it was a vision of the future? Clarissa saw herself running through the woods with a bundle hugged to her chest. Her hair was especially messy, and she breathed heavily. She looked terrified as she met someone by a river and handed the bundle over. “Don’t let anything happen to her. She is the future of this planet.” Clarissa’s future self whispered, looking down at the package with such deep love and admiration. Clarissa felt an overwhelming sense of disorientation and urgency. She could not
C Clarissa The man that Clarissa had been watching handed his precious bundle reluctantly to the mysterious couple, whose appearances were covered with poor woolen robes. “Keep my daughter safe.” He whispered urgently, confirming Clarissa’s hope that he was her future child’s father. She giggled, thinking that she could not wait to meet him. When the couple began to pull back their robes, Clarissa leaned in, eager to see who would be given her child. But the vision quickly grew black as the world she observed melted away. Clarissa sat in her chair, blinking off into space. She was back in the tavern. The day had set. A candle provided light between her and the p
Clarissa Evander picked up the pace once they were outside and directed her to a short building on one side of town. It was big in girth, but a tall man would bump their head on the ceiling if they were not careful. In the backyard was a large field with various types of targets. And there was an area sectioned off for the fencing class held twice a week. Evander smiled at her. “The day may have gotten off on the wrong foot. But I am glad that you are alright.” She smiled at him warmly. Nothing that had happened today could be blamed on him.
Stefan Stefan enjoyed his conversation with the purple sage despite his past when she sat up and reached down to the floor. Returning with a small soft gray foxen in her arms, the old lady pet it with one hand. “This is Chrome.” He smiled a little wider and nodded his acknowledgment of the creature. Foxens had many similarities to both cats and foxes. They were usually small and wiry, like both species. But they had an undercoat of soft cotton-like fur like a kitten would have, while the outer coat was sleek as a fox’s. The foxen turned its head lazily to look at Stefan. “She wanted to meet you.” The purple sage explained and waved her free hand at him.
Stefan Stefan stormed through the streets. Not only did the old witch force that vision on him, but it also made little sense. Afterward, he was filled with a sense of foreboding. His only thought was that he needed to check on Clarissa. He left the old witch busying herself around her home, gathering supplies to record and interpret the visions seen. She said it was rare that the pearl spoke, especially to others. Yet, it had spoken to him, shocking for her because he was not even a villager. He wondered if the lack of connection to this village was why the vision was so confusing and filled him with apprehension. But he wouldn’t rest until he ensured the safety of his bride. Then, he would escort Clarissa back to talk to the purple sage.
Clarissa As the blue cloud dissipated, a sudden rush of darkness overwhelmed Clarissa’s senses. Shadows swallowed the world around. A chill ran through her soul. The bond with Stefan and Blake thrummed with concern, but she was already being pulled away. She stood alone in a broken landscape. The sky was a mass of swirling black clouds, blotting out any light. The ground cracked and crumbled, swallowing remnants of once-great cities. Rivers of molten lava snaked through the land, burning everything in their path. The smell of sulfur and ash assaulted her senses.Clarissa’s heart pounded. People ran in every direction, their screams piercing the air. The devastation was total. The earth shuddered, the once-vibrant land reduced to a hellscape of devastation and despair. Her eyes were drawn to the sky, where twisted winged creatures circled. Once noble beasts like her own Mimi, they were now corrupted and enslaved by the malevolent force that brought this destruction. And then, at the ce
BlakeBlake was eager for the ceremony, having studied its technical aspects all week. Yet nothing had prepared him for the overwhelming magnificence of the experience. The ceremony had not been performed for hundreds of years, as the werecat village patiently awaited the hatching of the sacred eggs. Each generation practiced the ritual in reverence, their chants echoing through the ages in hopes that an Onyx Sage would soon emerge. Now, with the arrival of not one, but three Onyx Sages, the village buzzed with unprecedented excitement. The rhythmic chanting of the villagers infused the air with potent magic, each syllable amplifying the mystical energy that surrounded them. This ancient ceremony was designed to cement the bond between the familiar and the sage, intertwining their souls and enhancing their powers but the effect of multiple Onyx Sages in the same ceremony was uncertain. As the chants grew louder, the magic intensified, weaving an unbreakable connection that would ens
ClarissaBefore the door creaked open, the raucous roar of the massive crowd echoed through the stone hallway, a low, thunderous vibration that pulsed in time with Clarissa’s heart. Each footstep amplified the charged energy in the air. As they stepped out onto the stage where they would bind to their familiars, the blinding sunlight turned the bustling world into a bright blur.As her eyes adjusted, a sea of faces stretching as far as the eye could see came into sharp focus. Hundreds of onlookers packed the grand courtyard, their collective breath held in anticipation. The transition from the thunderous noise inside to the outside’s deafening silence was startling. Heads turned in unison, eyes wide with reverence and curiosity.Stefan subtly shifted his stance, placing himself slightly in front of Clarissa, as if shielding her from unseen dangers the crowd represented. Chief Yungerr stepped forward to address the crowd.“After ages of darkness, the Onyx Sages have been reborn with th
Clarissa Glowing purple flora illuminated the bath cavern, casting a soft light over the shimmering pool of teal-lit water, as Clarissa scrambled out of the tub and grabbed the robe hanging just inside the door of the bath chamber. Mimi followed her. But she didn’t see the mysterious elf anywhere.Where had she gone? Clarissa bolted down the hall, checking down every corridor she passed. But they were as empty as her understanding of the elf’s words. Who was going to ask her to go somewhere? Where? And even more confounding, what truth would be revealed there? The cave’s corridor pulsed with flickering light, ancient runes burning like warning embers. Shadows twisted violently as Clarissa sprinted after the mysterious woman, her breath sharp, the air electric with impending doom. Each step echoed louder, pushing her forward through the narrowing path.At the last corridor, Clarissa gasped and her eyes widened. An old woman in a lavender robe huddled in the corner. Her familiar wise e
Thank you for being such an amazing reader! I really want to hear what you think about the story so far. It's important to me that you enjoy it. Please leave a review or send me a message! It has been a difficult couple of months but I intend to finish this book next month. Stay tuned to find out how the ceremony changes everything and what will be required of them to bring peace and love to the world. And if you want to encourage me to keep writing, gems are a great way! Thank you for the gems you have already given. :-)
Clarissa Clarissa lifted her sleepy head from the table, her thoughts spinning sluggishly. The knock that woke her sounded again. Jumping up, she ran to let Stefan in. She fell asleep waiting for him. Disappointment gripped her when she saw the werecat ready to show them to their lessons again. She rubbed her eyes and stared at her confusedly. There was no way it was time already. She hadn’t even been to bed yet. Blake came out of his room looking refreshed and rested. Clarissa felt the dry spit on her face and knew that her hair was a mess. She couldn’t sit in front of everyone all day like this. “Good morning.” Blake greeted them, smiling warmly. Clarissa tried not to let his chipper attitude bother her. But she was exhausted and frustrated. Ignoring his cheer would be challenging; however, it was not his fault that she had not slept. “Just give me a minute to get ready.” She asked, realizing that they had not brought breakfast this morning. She went into her room to cl
Stefan Clarissa kept making strange faces at him throughout dinner. He didn’t appreciate being stared at while he was eating. The chipper conversation rubbed him raw until he could no longer sit still. But once he had Arcadia and Evander in his room, the pressure started to lessen. He had to focus on what was going on back home. Those affairs required his attention now. But his mind forced itself back to the fact that Clarissa had chosen to sit next to Blake during dinner. She hadn’t even sat across from Stefan. A wicked voice in his head questioned what they were doing under the table. The question made no sense. Clarissa kept her hands visible the entire meal. But did Blake? Stefan couldn’t remember, but he did remember the pink flush of her cheeks as she ate. “What do you wish to discuss?” Arcadia asked, sounding like a soldier reporting for duty. She and Evander stood near the closed door at parade rest. Stefan rumbled low in his throat, uncomfortable with their carefu
Clarissa As Chief Yungerr attended to his people without breaks, the day swiftly disappeared. Every time someone left the room, another person entered. The sun was casting long shadows throughout the room when people stopped coming in. Mimi observed everything from the corner of the room. Everyone seemed surprised to see him. He unnerved and distracted them momentarily. But Mimi remained quiet and motionless throughout the day. Clarissa sighed, and Chief Yungerr looked over at her. She stretched her back, realizing now how stiff she had gotten. Chief Yungerr’s chair cushions were essential, and she wished her seat was more comfortable. “So, what have you learned?” He asked, interested. “We saw many people today, and they each asked for something different. But every request seemed to have the same core desires. I counted six of them.” Clarissa said, checking her notes. Chief Yungerr listened attentively. His ears twitched. Smiling, he motioned for her to continue. “More p
