“Should we really do that?” Ami asks as we run away from Theo and the others. We’d like to play and explore on our own. “You do realize that he is a King?” she adds.

“I don’t forget that,” I say, especially when our difference in the status becomes a main sore point in our relationship.

“So you know that he can force you to do something, especially when you are a citizen of his country?”

I pause and Ami peers at my face. I smile sadly at her and say, “I don’t think he can hurt me more than I’ve been hurt already.”

“Oh,” she says and keeps quiet.

Then, we buy more snacks and even play some games and activities along the street. When we are drenched with sweat, we buy some Duran clothes and go inside a public bath to wash ourselves before making our way to the Ladies’ club that she is referring to. I am just glad that she didn’t ask more about me and Theo.

Once inside the club, I note a couple of tables and chairs. Most of them give a bit of privacy. On our right, I see a hallway.

The surprise place that Klevon is talking about is way past the Town Plaza and on the other side of where the Mountain Challenge is done. After an hour of walking, we finally reach it. It is a four floors building that looks like a castle because of its width. In front of us is a name that says, 'Duran National Library.' “Did you like it?” Klevon asks. I turn towards him and say, “I kinda expected it though.” “If you like it,” he taps his cheeks and says, “Where’s my kiss? It’s a nice surprise, right?” I wince. Instead of doing what he suggested, I slap his cheeks and say, “I also said back then… that it’s only for one time. And besides…” I look around. Everything is quiet–except for Silvino and Ami who are whispering to each other. The library’s doors and windows are also locked. “It’s already their closing hours.” “Insignificant things, such as operating times, never hindered me.” Then, he activates his wind magic and lifts me. “I don’t like what you are planning,” I say and

Klevon and I separate in front of the restaurant inn. It is the same place where I promise Theo to meet him once I return during the night. As expected, the young woman is present and is sweeping the floor when I enter. She makes a small squeal of delight and approaches. “King Theo is on the second floor. Room 8,” she whispers, then hands me a key. “Please reconcile with him. He seems conflicted.” I nod and go to the mentioned room. There is a magic barrier surrounding the room which makes me curious about who is the owner of the inn and who put up the barrier. It even looks safer and more sturdy than the one in Pitchford. Whoever did this, maybe I can learn a thing or two from him if ever I return? Then, I insert the key into the keyhole. I feel the magic shimmers and then an entrance opens on the barrier. It’s surprising. If I don’t know about wind magic, I won’t be able to sense these things. Inside, Theo is on the right side of the bed which is at the center of the room. He is

He is about to agree when suddenly, he rams against me and envelops me in his warmth. He tightly squeezes me and I can’t breathe. He takes uneven breaths and sniffs. When I feel that he is trembling, I realize he is crying. After a few minutes, he lets me go. He is looking down with his hands tightly clutching my shoulders. “How can you easily let me go, Kaiya?” he whispers. “Is this how little I matter to you, even with the mate bond?” “You are about to agree to it. You are the one who—” He presses his lips against me and then lets go after a few seconds. Then he touches his forehead on my shoulders. “I don’t want to let you go, but the way you push me away, I can’t take it anymore…” He stands up from the bed and looks down at me. “From now on, you will be a regular warrior. You will remain to be my personal guard and I will use your life as I see fit. But our relationship will be nothing but that of a protector and the protected–as a warrior and her King.” He pauses for a while

  • The Shrewd King   Chapter 071 - Orttenburg Kingdom

It takes over a week before we see the shore of Orttenburg. It means that finally, I can go up the deck to help the other wind magicians. Theo, Klevon, and most of the people are on the deck as well. It will just take an hour or so before we’ll be successfully anchored to the Orttenburg port. For the past few days, all I did is stay beside Theo. I manage his needs—food, clothes, cleaning up—and once, he even asks me to rub his back while taking a bath. Rather than a personal guard, I feel I am becoming his personal maid instead. Thankfully though, as he promised, he didn’t touch me. He didn’t make any move to pursue me. At least, my heart can relax for a while. “Nice dress,” Elroy praises as he looks me over. “I need to stay beside the King while meeting the Orttenburg royalty.” “Good luck then. I heard the Orttenburg siblings are very prim and proper,” Nadif adds. Then Ami whispers, “The eldest son is rumored to be very handsome. And he is someone as accomplished as King Theo.”

After bathing, I help Theo with his clothes. Once he’s done, I also wear my clothes. I choose the light blue one, simple and inconspicuous. This time, he is kind enough to wait for me before we enter the banquet hall. The men and women are so well dressed, in different styles, that I feel like I am the most under-dressed at this party. Even Klevon is looking fine with a nice suit. A servant girl ushers us to the table in front. She is blushing furiously as she steals glances at Theo. But who would not be, Theo had just overdone himself. He is a picture of a young, handsome, powerful King. On the other hand, most of the Kings and dignitaries of other countries are mostly old men. Well, that is, except the red-headed young King of Orttenburg. Half of his shoulder-length hair is tied at the back and his fringe falls gracefully over his forehead. This is the reason why, Theo and King Seth Raiya of Orttenburg, are called rivals. They are both muscular, good-looking, and powerful. Most im

One entrance going to the library is through a bridge that connects it to the castle. It looks like a kid at heart designed it. The roof is made of an open book, and the edges are the spine of the book. There is also a waiting area outside which are just stone benches that are made to look like stacks of books. It is so amazing that I almost forgot the reason why I am here at two in the morning. I am thirty minutes late though because Theo is being such a workaholic that after the party, he still worked on some documents, before hitting the bed. I push open the door and enter. It is undoubtedly the most massive library I have ever set foot into. Unlike Pitchford and Durian’s library, the wall, ceiling, and bookshelves are all painted white. From the outside, it seems like there are only four floors, but looking down, I am actually on the tenth floor, with the basement still way, way down. There are stairs all around, tables and chairs, private areas, and a dizzying amount of books. E

I take a deep breath. This information is too much. It feels strange. It is supposed to be a memory that belongs to me, but it all feels unfamiliar. “And the werewolves?” I ask, out of curiosity. Although, I already have an idea of the next events. “Without your experience from centuries of living, the werewolves stop to adapt to the fast-changing world. And you know the history, most of us become slaves, especially the weak ones.” “Wait, just a minute! Time out!” Seth interjects. “Let me breathe and process this, okay?” He glares at Darius and says, “You! This is huge information, how can you keep it from your King?!” While Seth is trying to calm himself down, I mimic him. This information, I think I need to process it as well as he does. So, after taking a few deep breaths, Seth asks again, “So, let me get this straight, she’s an old lady?” “She might have disappeared fifteen years ago, but without a doubt, she is the remaining werewolves’ Alpha Queen.” All my strength deplete

“What are you doing here?!” I hear Theo hisses. I wake up at his voice. I am crouching in the corner as I rub my eyes and open them. I feel like I have only slept for an hour. The embers on the fireplace have dwindled and I only see shadows. Theo is still in front of the fireplace, but he is with another person. “My ability allows me to enter any barrier created by magic,” a woman’s voice answers. “Princess Kissa! You will be my concubine but you should not do this while we are still within Orttenburg castle!” “My King, it doesn’t matter. Seth and my other siblings know of my passions. And I have desired you ever since I caught a glance of you the last time you visited.” “But–” “I can’t wait any longer, King Theo. I want a taste of you.” I blink and see her sitting over Theo. She is pushing at his chest, while she is completely naked, her chest pronounced and her nipples taut. “Don’t you understand how lucky I feel when they agreed to my proposition to become your concubine? I stand in the middle of an arena. In front of me is an enormous man covered in armor and holding a broadsword in front of him. I pull my sword out of the sheath and face my opponent. He is the biggest of the warriors–at least in mass. His armor covers most of his body except for his joints. A helm covers his face, but even so, I can see that he is very ready to fight. “Ready…” the announcer starts. “Fight!” The crowd of spectators cheers at the same time that the man rushes towards me. He swings his broadsword and I dodge to the left, missing me by a hair’s breadth. I counter by thrusting my sword forward, aiming for his exposed shoulder joints. He parries with ease and strikes back, the force of his attack sending shockwaves down my arm. I take a step back, regaining my composure as he advances once again. This time, I feint to the right and quickly pivot to my left, slashing at his unprotected knee joints. The crowd roars as my blade makes contact, biting into him and drawing bl

It is noisy. Why are people talking about me in my room?! I open my eyes in exasperation. They are saying that I am... Wait, is Kaiya my name? I try to sit up, but my body feels heavy and sluggish. I look down and feel relieved that I have legs... Why though? Nothing is making sense. Confused, I look around. “Kaiya? You’re awake!” a handsome man with black-purple hair says. He hugs me, but I push him away. “She doesn’t like you anymore,” a handsome red-haired man says this time. He’s smaller than the first one but still exudes strength. “Kaiya, you remember me, right? I am your mate.” They wait for me to speak and so I ask, “I am Kaiya?” “Yes, your name is Kaiya,” a woman informs. “The guy with the purplish hair is your lover. The guy with red hair is your mate.” “How does that work? A mate and a lover?” The woman named Inanna shrugs her shoulders and adds, “By the way, I am Inanna.” I try to process what Inanna has just told me. Mate and lover? It feels so foreign to me. “I..

As the purification of the Moon Goddess starts, I am overwhelmed by my own memories. It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before. The pain is excruciating, and I scream out in agony. But as time passes, the pain only intensifies. Tears flow down my face. But judging from the sting as it flows across my face, I think it is blood. I can feel my mind slipping away from the pain, and I can hear the screams of the werewolves inside my head. Suddenly, a warm hand grabs mine, squeezing it tightly. “Stay with me, Kaiya,” a voice says. Inanna. She presses her forehead against mine and whispers words of comfort. I can feel the calming magic from her as well. Through the pain, I manage to grasp onto her hands, anchoring myself to reality. Her magic and tone stabilize me, and slowly, I begin to focus on what’s happening around us. The Moon Goddess is suspended as her purification process starts. I can hear screams from outside the mimicked Realm that Inanna has done. “Don’t give up now...” she

As we leave my chamber, I can hear the sounds of battle growing louder outside. I can sense humans against humans. But there are also vampires and werewolves fighting against humans. There is the sound of swords clashing against swords or armor. Worse, I see the destruction that the fighting is doing to Orttenburg. Even in the early moments of the war, there are already casualties that can be seen around. I clench my jaws. We must end this war soon. All I need is to get General Brandon and purify the Moon Goddess. After that, we can persuade these kingdoms that there’s no need for war. As we hurry through the chaos, I feel a pang of guilt. I can’t help but feel responsible for the destruction and loss of life in Orttenburg. It was my selfishness that led to this war. I have to make this right. Finally, we reach the hall where Inanna and Ruth are waiting for us. Inanna looks at us with a stern expression. “Good, you’re here. Time is of the essence.” I nod as Gezer puts me down. Ina

After sighing, Seth says, “Fine! But only with Theo, at least him–I trust will not hurt you.” I frown. “If you know that then—” “He will not hurt you, but he might take you away!” “Oh,” I mutter because Theo might really do it. I take a deep breath and the room spins for a moment. Seth helps me back to the bed and sits with me while the room steadies. “You should rest more,” he says, but I shake my head. “I can’t waste any time,” I whisper, trying to suppress the tremble in my voice. “Invite Theo. I will meet him in one of the sitting rooms.” “There’s no need for you to move. I will lead him here.” As Seth leaves the room, I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I analyze the current situation. Theo will always help me. The only problem is, I need him to understand the situation. All we need is to trap General Brandon, take out the Moon Goddess, purify her, and that’s it. I can talk with the Moon Goddess and plead with her about my case. All I need is to be strong enough to wr

Suddenly, I am whisked away from my own mind. I open my eyes to see both Inanna and Seth looking down at me. “Kaiya, what’s wrong? What did you see?” Seth asks. “I come here because I sensed some distortions in the air,” Inanna informs. “What happened?” I swallow hard, my head reeling from all the information. It is my fault in the first place! “There’s no dark entity inside me, but I’ve found out something else instead.” “What is it?” Seth asks. He is looking worried as seconds pass. I grin at him. “I am an apostle, rather than a Vessel—if it makes any sense.” Then, I glance at Inanna and ask, “Did you know?” “Just a hint,” she says. “The Blood God told me that you are technically different from us. Gezer, Ninus, and I are Vessels. You are a little bit different, though.” “Then why did you say that I am...” “Because I don’t know what to call you.” “How is an apostle different from vessels?” “I am guessing that it’s in the amount of blessing you received. Once, the Blood Go

I watch as Theo’s ship slowly reaches the horizon. I can still feel the warmth of his embrace, and his words still echo in my heart. ‘No one can take your place, Kaiya.’ I let out a rush of air as I hold back my tears. He’s only been away for a while and I am missing him already. And so I watch as the ship eventually disappears from my sight. At the same time, Inanna reaches for my hand. “I heard that you will be doing a ritual today. Just inform me if you need help,” she says and leaves me and Seth alone on the balcony. I turn to the ocean and take a deep breath. Despite the distance, I can still feel him inside my heart. “Kaiya,” Seth calls from behind me. I turn to him and smile. “Are you ready for the ritual?” “Yes,” I nod. “Let’s start.” We both take out our supplies and prepare for the ritual. We walk to the King’s private garden—a quiet clearing where no one can disturb us. We start by setting up candles, incense, and some crystals that Inanna provided earlier. When all

“Come on, Theo.” I take his hand and we walk to my room. I open the door slowly, revealing my small but cozy room. Light from the moon spills through the window, bathing everything in a soft blue hue. “Welcome to my room,” I say warmly. He looks around carefully with curious eyes, and I can’t help but laugh at his reaction. “Do you like it?” He draws me close before answering. “It’s lovely.” His arms wrap around me tight and he nuzzles his head against mine before kissing me tenderly on the lips. “I really missed you.” I push back and grin at him. “Well, I missed you more.” I take a step back from him and remove my clothes. He watches me as I peel every piece of clothing in my body. He looks at me with such devotion that it makes me blush. “I think it’s about time you bare yourself to me too.” “Nope, I enjoy seeing you like this.” “Like what? Naked and embarrassed?” “No. Looking at me with desire in your eyes.” Theo takes a step closer and runs his hand down my naked back, se

You are—“ “Your King has done the same thing in my land!” he growls at Darius, who is much taller and bigger than him. Seth stands up calmly and meets Theo’s gaze. “There’s nothing going on here, King Theo. We were just talking.” Theo steps closer and takes in my state, his eyes flickering between Seth and me. “Talking? With your hands all over her? I’m not stupid, Seth. I know that you wanted her even before you have the mate bond with her!” Seth’s jaw tightens as Theo approaches him. Standing tall and unflinching, he says. “I’m not trying to do anything, Theo. Kaiya and I were just having a moment.” “A moment? Is that what you call it?” Theo sneers, grabbing Seth by the collar of his clothes. I stand up, panic rising in my chest. “Theo, stop! We were just talking, I swear!” But Theo doe
