Chapter One Hundred-Thirty Nine

His head was so clouded by his own worries that he didn’t notice Eleanor’s flushed face as she opened up the door, “Hey, when did you get home?”

She cleared her throat before speaking, “Just now, uh, I was about to inform you,” She lied, missing out on the part where she had swung by his room earlier.

Roth still failed to pick up cues betraying Eleanor’s nervousness, as he handed the envelope to her. Earlier that day, that envelope had been the biggest source of his concerns, but now something else occupied a bigger portion of his mind.

Eleanor took the envelope and slowly took her previous seat at the edge of the bed, as Roth eagerly followed. Eleanor held the envelope, about to unstick the flap that would reveal the contents of the envelope, when she looked up at Roth seeking confirmation.

Roth gave her a nod of approval with knitted brows as he nervously fumbled with his fingers, and so she pulled at the flap, just as her phone rang inside her bag.
