Violet felt numb as Jeremy led her out of her home and into a large SUV. “Let’s go,” he told the driver. Violet pressed her lips together as she watched her home grow smaller. Away from her parents. Away from all that was her life. Her eyes stung with tears, but this time they didn’t fall. She didn’t take her eyes off the house until it was gone. Violet looked out the window as they drove. Jeremy spoke softly with the man driving, but it all sounded like a dull buzz to her. The loss of everything had sucked her deep inside herself.
She was so caught up in her loss, that when they stopped it startled her. Leaning forward slightly, Violet looked up at the building in front of them. With the first signs of dawn approaching, she could see it was a warehouse of some kind. The werewolves got out of the car, but Violet stayed where she was. She didn’t want to get out. She knew the moment she got out of this car the world she knew would be over. Violet could feel it in her bones.
“Violet,” Jeremy said, his voice soft. Surprise fluttered through her again as she looked to her left and realized he’d opened her door. “I need you to follow me.” She swallowed, knowing it was stupid to stay in the car, but still couldn’t bring herself to move. “Alright, let’s take this slow,” he said and held out his hand. “Just take my hand and I’ll help you.” Violet hesitated for a moment then reached out and laid her hand in his. His skin was feverishly hot, but when she looked at him, he seemed perfectly fine. “Now, the other hand.”
Violet did as she was told and with a small tug, he encouraged her to get out of the SUV. Violet didn’t know if it was the contrast of his hot skin and the coolness of the pavement on her bare feet or simply fear of what was going to happen that sent a shiver running down her spine.
For the first time, Jeremy seemed to take notice that all Violet was wearing was a t-shirt and pajama pants. “Let’s get you inside before you freeze. I’ll make sure someone gets some clothes for you.”
Releasing one of her hands, Jeremy led her into the warehouse. It looked like a sort of improvised meeting center or business floor. There were small desks set up in front of the warehouse. As they walked through the desks the people stared at them. They looked suspicious, nervous, or wary as they watched her, and Violet couldn’t help notice that it was her they were staring at. Past the desks, some cots were set up as makeshift sleeping quarters. Jeremy led her to a corner with a small cot. There were cloth screens on wheels giving the corner a semblance of privacy.
“You can stay here for the night,” he said, patting the cot. “I think it’s best you get some rest. You’ve been through quite the ordeal. We’ll talk more in the morning.”
Violet sat down on the cot and nodded. She watched him leave. He moved the screen to block off the area. She wasn’t sure if it was for her benefit or the others. She heard him walk away, only to stop a few feet from away. A man spoke in a hushed voice. “What the hell are you thinking? Bringing her here. If the alpha finds out she’s here, he’ll kill us all. If we’re lucky.”
“Hush, she can hear you,” Jeremy said in a similar voice and she heard them walk further away.
A sliver of alarm slid through her. Violet scooted back until her back is against the cool metal wall. Now alone, the grief welled up inside her. She closed her eyes as she hugged herself, but as soon as she did, everything came back. The men, the monsters, her mother, the blood. Violet’s chest tightened and she couldn’t breathe. She opened her eyes gasping for air. A choked sob escaped her. She covered her mouth, not wanting to draw attention to herself. More tears fell and Violet didn’t try to stop them. Why had this happened to her? A sharp shard of anger sliced through her grief. Why? Why had they come to her home, hurt her parents, tried to hurt her? What did this alpha want? Violet looked back at her life, trying to find any sign or hint that her parents were involved in any of this ‘werewolf’ stuff or mention of an alpha, but nothing came.
As the night passed, Violet’s emotions bounced all over the place. One moment she was paralyzed with grief, silently screaming for her parents. The next she was so angry her entire body shook and she wanted to hurt the men who took her family from her. Sometimes she became catatonic with the enormous weight of her loss. The one thing she didn’t do was rest.
When Jeremy returned in the morning he found her still sitting. She was hugging her knees, staring at the cement floor. “Hey, did you get any rest?” he asked as he sat next to her. She shook her head. “I had hoped, but yeah, I didn’t think you would. If I was in your shoes, I wouldn’t have either. Though, I would appreciate it if you tried to eat a little.” He handed her some fast food.
Violet knew she should be hungry, but the idea of food just made her stomach churn. Still, she unwrapped the biscuit and picked at it. “What’s going to happen now?”
“Now, you eat and I’ll talk. I know this is a lot for you, and I don’t imagine today is going to be much easier. As I told you yesterday, the men that came to your house, me, and everyone here are werewolves. Hollywood got some of it right. We do shapeshift, though it doesn’t need to be on a full moon. Though, we have to shift during full moons. We live in a thing called packs with the leader being the alpha.”
“How did you know my parents?” Violet asked. That was more important to her right now than what a werewolf could or couldn’t do.
“Your father learned about us through his work in the military, through him I met your mother. One of your father’s jobs was to be a liaison between us and the US government. However, some disagree with our collaboration, some like the alpha who sent those men after your parents. The alpha is a very powerful werewolf who is notorious for two things: He rules his people with an iron fist and hates humans. He sees your kind as beneath us. His ultimate goal has been to overthrow humans’ control of the world and put it in the hands of werewolves, or better said into his hands. Your parents were working with me to stop him. He had acquired a list of other alphas who were in opposition to his plans. A list that your parents stole from him and those men last night stole back for the alpha.”
Violet bit her lip, trying to assimilate everything he was telling her. How could she not have known any of this? How had they managed to keep this from her? She didn’t know how, but Violet understood why. Her parents had always been super protective of her. Sometimes to the point that Violet felt smothered, but now it all made sense. No doubt they knew they had targets on their backs. Was that why they refused to let her go to Europe? Probably. Knowing why didn’t make Violet feel any better though. Just the opposite. She wished they had told her. Maybe then she wouldn’t have spent her last days with them angry with them.
“Violet, as I’ve said I know you’ve been through a lot,” Jeremy said, his voice and face was a model of sympathy. “But that information your parents had is extremely important. If we don’t get that back hundreds of lives, humans, and werewolves, are at risk. We have to get it back. ”
Violet frowned, unsure what that had to do with her. “Okay.”
“Also,” he said, his expression taking on a strained note. “The alpha will take your survival as an insult to his dominance. He’s going to stop at nothing until you’re dead. Because of that, my people are not happy that I brought you here. You’re going to need a place to hide where the alpha won’t look for you and we need that information back. There is a way we both can get what we need. We need you to go undercover as a new addition to the alpha’s domestic staff and get that information back for us. With it, we can take down the alpha and you would no longer be in danger.”
Her eyes widened. She expected him to ask her for something, but that? “What? He’d kill me!”
Jeremy shook his head. “No, his home would be the one place he’d never look for you and we can take care of your scent so you don’t smell human.”
“But… I can’t!” No way could she pull something like that off.
“I’m sorry, Violet. If there was another way, I would take it, but there isn’t. The alpha would recognize my people immediately, unlike you,” he explained then his expression turned pained. “I hate to do this, but if you don’t help I can’t let you stay here. It’s too dangerous for us. I would have to send you back home. There, no one would be able to protect you from the alpha and his men.”
Violet sucked in a breath, staring at him in horror. She bit her lip as more tears fell onto her cheeks. She didn’t have a choice. Violet would have to do what he told her. It seemed that was the story of her life. One person after another ordering her what to do or deciding what was best for her. Of course, she probably wouldn’t have much of a life left for any of it to matter. Most likely this alpha would kill her before she ever reached her birthday, especially if Violet didn’t do what Jeremy told her to do.
Bile filled her mouth with a bitter taste as she said, “Okay, I’ll do it.”
The rest of the day Jeremy and all the others kept their distance from Violet. There were a few times she swore she caught someone saying her name in a hushed whisper or people talking about ‘that human.’ All too aware of how they felt about her, Violet stayed in her corner, and only left to find the bathroom. Exhausted and worn thin, Violet tried to get some sleep. Yet, every time she closed her eyes, she heard the gun go off and her mother falling back onto the floor, blood pooling around her. When Sunday morning came around, Violet had perhaps five hours of sleep.
With her heart in her throat, Violet passed through the gate, towards the large house. More than ever, Violet wanted to turn and run as far as she could, but instead, she took one shaky step after another. As she reached the large wooden door, it opened before she could even lift her hand to knock. A man looking to be in his late forties opened the door wider for her to come inside. “Mrs. Chaplin will be here in a moment. Stay here,” he told her before disappearing into a room to her left.
The man rubbed his neck. Stress and terrible sleeping arrangements had kinked up the muscles. As he messaged out the knots in his neck, he couldn’t help feel a pang of loss for the large empty bed waiting for him at home and the warm body of the woman who used to share it with him. The pang of loss hit him hard, remembering she would never lay next to him again. She was gone, and it was all thanks to one Alpha Frank Dupree. He’d stolen her from him, not once, but twice. Biter bile filled his throat and mouth. Grabbing the half-empty alcohol bottle, he took a long drink. The burn of the alcohol wiping the nasty taste out of his mouth. Setting
Mrs. Chaplin led Violet through the house and into the kitchen. There a woman, perhaps in her thirties, with dirty blonde hair piled up on top of her head was barking orders to the three other people in the large kitchen. “Ah, Mrs. Chaplin, how’s everything today. Got something for me?” she asked, seeing the governess.
Violet tried. She really did, but how was she to know cooking would be so hard. While trying not to lag behind, she had dumped near a dozen whipped eggs on the floor and according to the graying woman, cut onions worse than a three-year-old on a sugar high. How was it even possible to cut something so each piece would be the same size. That seemed impossible! Yet, she tried and failed. Violet saw the way they were all looking at her too. They knew. They knew she had no idea what the hell she was doing. What was she going to do? If they found out she had no experience as a cook, how much harder would they look at her? By the time breakfast was done
“I know the truth,” Mrs. Chaplin repeated.“I-I…” Violet said, her eyes still wide. What could she say? She had to say something, anything if she hoped to stop the governess from turning her into the alpha. “I can explain. Please, just let me explain.”
Never before had a shower felt so good, Violet thought as she dried her now chicken free hair. Stepping out of the bathroom, she saw Mia standing by her room. “It’s not time to go back already, is it?” She tried to keep the horror of that thought out of her voice, but the way Mia laughed, she didn’t think she was successful.
We went into the house, but instead of going to the kitchen, Mia took me to the servant’s area. With a glance down either side of the hallway, she ushered me into the common room. With yet another glance, Mia said, “You need to be careful, Violet.”“What do you mean? Because of that girl?
Noah didn’t have the answers Violet needed so he left to find the alpha while she took a shower and changed her clothes. It was exactly what she needed and when Noah came back, Violet felt ready to deal with whatever answers the alpha had to tell her. He was waiting for them in his office. Instead of sitting behind the desk, the alpha was sitting in a chair near the window, looking out of it. As soon as the door opened, he got up and walked over to her. “May I hug you?” he asked. The question surprised her, but she nodded. “Yeah.” He swallowed her into a hug. It was a little tight but Violet’s entire body relaxed. Again, she was surprised. She felt safe. The alpha made her feel safe. “I was so worried when we discovered you were gone. I thought…” He paused as if taking a moment to gather himself. “I’d
“Don’t make me do this, Violet,” her dad saidViolet shook her head, not moving away from Nolan. At this point, the vibrating, buzzing sensation flooded her body. It was so strong she wasn’t so sure she could move.“After everything I’ve done? After everything I’ve sacrificed for you?” Her dad demanded before he walked up to her.As soon as he reached for her, the sensation that had been running through Violet exploded. All the anger, loss, and pain she had been feeling ever since her mother was murdered flowed out of her and against her dad. A brief look of surprise washed over his face as she shoved him. “You killed my mother,” she growled at him, not even recognizing her own voice. “You tried to have me killed too!”
It had been a few days and Violet couldn’t shake the feeling she was just another prisoner. She was constantly followed by the big silent werewolf, not allowed to go outside, and she hardly saw her father. When Violet did see him, he tried to act like everything since that night of the attack hadn’t happened, and they were living an absolutely normal life. If she asked any questions he’d get angry and leave. When the big silent type wasn’t paying too much attention, Violet tried to eavesdrop on the conversations, however, she couldn’t pick up much. Though, she did learn that her father and Morgan weren’t seeing eye to eye on something. It had been a few days too long. Her patience had run out and now more than anything she wanted answers. Violet stopped her usual walk around the main room of the warehouse and turned to Big Silent. “I want to see my father. Where is
Still more than a little awe-struck, Violet followed her father into the warehouse with Jeremy or well, Morgan following behind herAs they walked through the warehouse, that reminded Violet a lot like the first one Morgan had taken her to, Violet tried to get her dad to say something, but he didn’t even acknowledge that he’d heard her. Her stomach twisted as she followed him, casting furtive glances at the warehouse in itself. The people there stared at Violet like she’d done something to piss them off. Others hid whatever they were working on as she passed. Something about all of this didn’t feel right. How was her dad alive when she saw the werewolves shoot him. She saw his lifeless body as the others took her away. Finally, her dad took her to what looked to be like an office. The windows were covered with what looked like brown pape
Two weeks passed since the welcoming party and it had been two weeks of very little news. Despite his best attempts, all Nolan had managed to learn is that people thought her dad was a creep, especially when it came to her mom. It seemed many thought he was purposely trying to break up her mother and the alpha while they were there with the pack.Violet remembered what the alpha had said at the party. People didn’t like her father because they didn’t understand him and Violet knew her dad. Honesty and honor were two of his core beliefs. He always instilled in her that no matter what she did, as long as she was honest and honorable there would always be a way forward. A man like that doesn’t break up a relationship. With a sleepy yawn, Violet joined the alpha in his office for breakfast. It’d become a routine for them to meet and discuss
The entirety of the backyard was used for the party. There were balloons and streamers placed elegantly through the yard. Tables were set up with mountains of food and there were places to sit and tables for eating everywhere. Instead of a welcoming party, it looked more like a wedding reception to Violet. All and all, she thought it was overkill in the truest sense. However, Violet put on her best politely interested expression and decided to take advantage of this situation to get what information she could. It sent a thrill through her when she noticed that several of the staff had joined. An older werewolf woman who looked like the definition of a ‘Karen’ stopped Violet. “Oh, hello dear, I’m Cathy Mills, and I just want to tell you how lovely it is to have you here with us. All of us were worried when the alpha refused to take a mate and had no children of his own.”
The next morning, Mrs. Chaplin left word with Violet that he alpha wanted to see her in his office. With her stomach in knots, Violet entered his office. There was a table set up with breakfast. The alpha smiled when he saw her and asked her to take a seat. The tightness in his smile or the tired look in his eyes wasn’t missed by her as she sat.“What’s wrong?” she asked, picking up her fork and started to eat.The alpha chuckled lowly. “Either you're getting more perceptive or I am getting worse in keeping up my mask.”“Perhaps a little of both,” Violet said then gave him a questioning look.He sighed and took a drink of the orange juice in front of him. “This is not easy for me to admit, Violet. I am the alpha
Despite Violet’s insistence that she could dress and make it upon herself, Mia refused to leave her room until Violet was ready for her date with Nolan. They went through all of Violet’s clothes and make-up until Mia picked out the things she thought would be perfect for Violet and her date with Nolan. While Violet may have protested a lot, she appreciated Mia’s help. Their bickering made Violet feel normal. She and her friends use to do the same all the time and it seemed like forever since she felt like she had a friend.“What do you think?” Mia asked when she finished with Violet’s hair.“Wow, I look great,” Viole replied as she looked into the mirror. “You are a woman with many talents.”Mia beamed, looking pleased. “I am, aren’t
Lunch was delicious and after a short rest, she was ready to tackle the hike back to the alpha’s car. As they walked, Violet couldn’t stop thinking about her situation with the alpha, and her father. The alpha made some small talk, and Violet contributed absent-mindedly. Her logical mind told her it wasn’t a betrayal to her father, allowing the alpha a relationship with her. The alpha made no demands to be recognized as her father. And what if she did recognize the alpha as her father? There were many families that had multiple mothers or fathers. There were godfathers, stepfathers, and all that.Violet tried to think of any reasons to not give the alpha a chance, but besides the feeling of betraying her father, she couldn’t find one.“Everything okay,” the alpha asked as they reached the car.
