Violet’s heart pounded in her chest as she carefully made her way towards the staircase. The sounds of people enjoying their dinner filtered through the house. That was probably the only reason Violet hadn’t fainted yet. If there is one thing she learned through all this is that she didn’t have a future in espionage. She was not, in fact, the next James Bond. As she reached the stairs, Violet paused and held her breath. She listened for anything that might hint someone was coming her way. Letting it out, Violet started up the stairs torn between running up and being careful, but slow.

Every creak of the dark wood made her cringe as she went until she was finally on the second floor. Taking another deep breath, Violet she checked again for signs someone might be up there. Again, there was nothing. The only thing she heard was the soft hum of the A.C. She took one cautious step towards the

“Nolan, it’s a good thing you’re here,” Emily said, turning her back to Violet. Tightening her grip on the book, Violet stood and touched her lip where Emily had hit her. She winced with the flair of pain. Her fingertips came back bloody. Emily had done more than clip her. The werewolf had busted her lip, at the very least. Violet’s jaw on that side was starting to throb with pain. Fear started to slice through Violet. This was just going to be the start. If her luck stayed the same, her death wasn’t going to be a quick one.“Yeah, I’m sure you are,” Nolan said as Violet got to her feet. “This is it, Emily. You’re out. The alpha will have your head for this.”“Will he?” Emily shot back. “I don’t know how this pathetic maid turned you against me, but you’r

Violet hesitated for a moment. Part of her was sure this was a trap, but trap or not, this was her chance to get answers. Swallowing, she followed the alpha out of the cell past Mrs. Chaplin and Nolan. Her shoulders hunched up as they fell behind her and the little hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She took a slow deep breath then let it out, as they ascended the stairs. He led her to the second floor and back to his office that she’d just been in.“Close the door, Helena,” he said, taking a seat on the edge of his desk then waved a hand for Violet to sit in one of the chairs near the front of his desk.Violet didn’t sit down. She stood, crossing her arms. A small smile appeared on the corner of the alpha’s mouth and he nodded. When the door was closed the smile dropped. “So, I suppose you have a l

Violet woke suddenly, sitting up. She was still fully dressed and there was a headache threatening to turn her brain into mush. She wasn’t sure what woke her until she heard the knocking on the door. Getting up from the bed, she walked over to the door. Mrs. Chaplin had a tray in her hands and said, “Breakfast” as soon as Violet opened it. “Okay,” Violet said, not sure what else to say, and stepped aside to let the governess into the room. She felt awkward as she watched the older werewolf set the tray on a small table next to the wall ahead of Violet. Now the truth was out, she didn’t know what to expect from anyone anymore. Closing the door, Violet sat in one of the two chairs. “So, uh, what happens now?” Mrs. Chaplin sat down across from Violet and blew out a breath. “That, I suppose, is up to you and yo

Once the alpha had left, Violet paced the room, trying to assimilate everything the alpha had told her. Jeremy wasn’t really Jeremy but this Richard Morgan? She sighed and ran her hands through her hair. More than ever, Violet wished her mother was there. If only her mom had told her about all of this before, but now Violet could only guess who was telling her the truth and who was lying to her.She paced the room as her thoughts tumbled and built up in her head until she felt like it was going to explode. Needing to get out of that room, Violet left and started to go down the stairs when she stopped halfway. What if she saw Mia or someone else she knew? Would they all know who she was human? Furthermore, would they know the alpha claimed to be her father? Oddly, having the truth known made her feel more like an intruder than she felt when she was lying to everyone.

Talking to Mia had lifted a weight off of Violet’s shoulders. Her situation still wasn’t great, but at least, her friend was still her friend. Though, she had no idea what she was going to do next. As the sun started to sink past the trees she could see from her window, Violet started to think about dinner. She wasn’t exactly sure how it worked when she was the one sitting at the table instead of setting it. She didn’t have to wonder long when the alpha knocked on her door. “Hello, Violet, I was wondering if you’d join me for dinner out in the garden.”“In the garden?” Violet said, a little surprised.“Yes, I thought you would prefer something more private than joining all the others just yet.”Again, Violet found herself surprised. &ldq

The alpha cleared his throat and Violet looked up from her mom’s bracelet now on her wrist to him. “As I’ve said before I know this is difficult for you. I hope the bracelet gives you some comfort, but I was also thinking I could have someone go to your home and get some of your things for you. I’m sure having your clothes would make you feel all the more you if I am making myself clear.”Wrinkling her nose, Violet told him, “I don’t want anyone going through my stuff.”“Well..” the alpha said, looking a little surprised.“I want to go and get my things.”“Oh...Violet, I don’t think-”“No, it needs to be me,” she told him, re

Violet’s room was just like she left it. Unexpected anger surged through her. Everything was normal. Everything shouldn’t be normal. Part of her wanted to destroy the room. Rip the pictures off the walls, tear the blankets on her bed to shreds, break the chairs, and smash the mirror.“Don’t be stupid,” she told herself and walked over to her dresser. Violet opened it and began taking things out of it, or she did until the pictures on top of the dresser caught her attention. They were a couple of her parents, but most of them were of her with her friends. Or what those she thought were friends. Did they even notice she had gone silent all this time? Did they wonder where she was? After all, Lilianne did say she wanted Violet to join them in Europe after her birthday.Unable to resist, Violet took out the phone Jeremy had given her.

The flight back was just as uneventful as the one there. Back in the alpha’s territory, Nolan helped Violet carry the suitcases to her room, and then they went to meet with the alpha. “Everything went well?” he asked when he saw them.“Yeah, but the weirdness ensues,” Violet told him.“Excuse me?”“Someone cleaned her house,” Nolan replied. “Any signs of a home invasion and a murder have been whipped clean.”“Ah, weirdness,” the alpha said.“Nolan says Jer- I mean Morgan doesn’t do this kind of thing. Why would he do it now? And why go into my mom’s e-mails and stuff. Why would he want no one to think my parents are missing?&

Noah didn’t have the answers Violet needed so he left to find the alpha while she took a shower and changed her clothes. It was exactly what she needed and when Noah came back, Violet felt ready to deal with whatever answers the alpha had to tell her. He was waiting for them in his office. Instead of sitting behind the desk, the alpha was sitting in a chair near the window, looking out of it. As soon as the door opened, he got up and walked over to her. “May I hug you?” he asked. The question surprised her, but she nodded. “Yeah.” He swallowed her into a hug. It was a little tight but Violet’s entire body relaxed. Again, she was surprised. She felt safe. The alpha made her feel safe. “I was so worried when we discovered you were gone. I thought…” He paused as if taking a moment to gather himself. “I’d

“Don’t make me do this, Violet,” her dad saidViolet shook her head, not moving away from Nolan. At this point, the vibrating, buzzing sensation flooded her body. It was so strong she wasn’t so sure she could move.“After everything I’ve done? After everything I’ve sacrificed for you?” Her dad demanded before he walked up to her.As soon as he reached for her, the sensation that had been running through Violet exploded. All the anger, loss, and pain she had been feeling ever since her mother was murdered flowed out of her and against her dad. A brief look of surprise washed over his face as she shoved him. “You killed my mother,” she growled at him, not even recognizing her own voice. “You tried to have me killed too!”

It had been a few days and Violet couldn’t shake the feeling she was just another prisoner. She was constantly followed by the big silent werewolf, not allowed to go outside, and she hardly saw her father. When Violet did see him, he tried to act like everything since that night of the attack hadn’t happened, and they were living an absolutely normal life. If she asked any questions he’d get angry and leave. When the big silent type wasn’t paying too much attention, Violet tried to eavesdrop on the conversations, however, she couldn’t pick up much. Though, she did learn that her father and Morgan weren’t seeing eye to eye on something. It had been a few days too long. Her patience had run out and now more than anything she wanted answers. Violet stopped her usual walk around the main room of the warehouse and turned to Big Silent. “I want to see my father. Where is

Still more than a little awe-struck, Violet followed her father into the warehouse with Jeremy or well, Morgan following behind herAs they walked through the warehouse, that reminded Violet a lot like the first one Morgan had taken her to, Violet tried to get her dad to say something, but he didn’t even acknowledge that he’d heard her. Her stomach twisted as she followed him, casting furtive glances at the warehouse in itself. The people there stared at Violet like she’d done something to piss them off. Others hid whatever they were working on as she passed. Something about all of this didn’t feel right. How was her dad alive when she saw the werewolves shoot him. She saw his lifeless body as the others took her away. Finally, her dad took her to what looked to be like an office. The windows were covered with what looked like brown pape

Two weeks passed since the welcoming party and it had been two weeks of very little news. Despite his best attempts, all Nolan had managed to learn is that people thought her dad was a creep, especially when it came to her mom. It seemed many thought he was purposely trying to break up her mother and the alpha while they were there with the pack.Violet remembered what the alpha had said at the party. People didn’t like her father because they didn’t understand him and Violet knew her dad. Honesty and honor were two of his core beliefs. He always instilled in her that no matter what she did, as long as she was honest and honorable there would always be a way forward. A man like that doesn’t break up a relationship. With a sleepy yawn, Violet joined the alpha in his office for breakfast. It’d become a routine for them to meet and discuss

The entirety of the backyard was used for the party. There were balloons and streamers placed elegantly through the yard. Tables were set up with mountains of food and there were places to sit and tables for eating everywhere. Instead of a welcoming party, it looked more like a wedding reception to Violet. All and all, she thought it was overkill in the truest sense. However, Violet put on her best politely interested expression and decided to take advantage of this situation to get what information she could. It sent a thrill through her when she noticed that several of the staff had joined. An older werewolf woman who looked like the definition of a ‘Karen’ stopped Violet. “Oh, hello dear, I’m Cathy Mills, and I just want to tell you how lovely it is to have you here with us. All of us were worried when the alpha refused to take a mate and had no children of his own.”

The next morning, Mrs. Chaplin left word with Violet that he alpha wanted to see her in his office. With her stomach in knots, Violet entered his office. There was a table set up with breakfast. The alpha smiled when he saw her and asked her to take a seat. The tightness in his smile or the tired look in his eyes wasn’t missed by her as she sat.“What’s wrong?” she asked, picking up her fork and started to eat.The alpha chuckled lowly. “Either you're getting more perceptive or I am getting worse in keeping up my mask.”“Perhaps a little of both,” Violet said then gave him a questioning look.He sighed and took a drink of the orange juice in front of him. “This is not easy for me to admit, Violet. I am the alpha

Despite Violet’s insistence that she could dress and make it upon herself, Mia refused to leave her room until Violet was ready for her date with Nolan. They went through all of Violet’s clothes and make-up until Mia picked out the things she thought would be perfect for Violet and her date with Nolan. While Violet may have protested a lot, she appreciated Mia’s help. Their bickering made Violet feel normal. She and her friends use to do the same all the time and it seemed like forever since she felt like she had a friend.“What do you think?” Mia asked when she finished with Violet’s hair.“Wow, I look great,” Viole replied as she looked into the mirror. “You are a woman with many talents.”Mia beamed, looking pleased. “I am, aren’t

Lunch was delicious and after a short rest, she was ready to tackle the hike back to the alpha’s car. As they walked, Violet couldn’t stop thinking about her situation with the alpha, and her father. The alpha made some small talk, and Violet contributed absent-mindedly. Her logical mind told her it wasn’t a betrayal to her father, allowing the alpha a relationship with her. The alpha made no demands to be recognized as her father. And what if she did recognize the alpha as her father? There were many families that had multiple mothers or fathers. There were godfathers, stepfathers, and all that.Violet tried to think of any reasons to not give the alpha a chance, but besides the feeling of betraying her father, she couldn’t find one.“Everything okay,” the alpha asked as they reached the car.
