As I walked in I was startled by applause, a crowd gathered in front of me.
I recognized a few faces; Justine, a few HODs and some clerks and secretaries.
Two even held a small poster, "Our Heroine, thanks for saving the CEO." It read.
I smiled shyly.
"Let's give it up for Miss Rose," a man in a suit walked out of the crowd, I recognized him as the manager; Mr. Brandon, he reported directly to Nathan.
"What's going on here?" a sharp voice called out.
The felt familiar, I turned, and I found myself staring Into the cold eyes of Lisa Acheron.
She stood still, staring at us.
She stared at me, her eyes slowly going over the small poster, She scoffed.
"What is this? A party?" Her lips curled up, "You think you're some sort of heroine?" She glared at me.
I stiffened under her gaze.
"This…" Brandon hesitated, "It was Rose's idea, I thought it would be good for morale."
"Me!?" I was shocked, how was this my idea? If it was how comes I didn't seem to remember it?
Justine too also looked startled.
"Morale?" Lisa glared at me, she also stared at the crowd,
"If you need morale Mr. Brandon I'd suggest you go to the army, but right now, I think you all should get back to work."
"Yes, yes" Brandon nodded, he turned to the crowd, "Everyone get to work."
The crowd dispersed, Justine signaled me to be careful.
I'd turned to leave when Lisa called me.
"Rose, a minute please."
"Yes?" I halted in my steps, while I didn't have a good impression of this lady, I didn't resent her much.
"Nathan won't be coming in today," Lisa walked up to me, I caught the scent of her faint perfume.
"You see, he has to rest well, and it won't be fair to let you be in the office, you're just a secretary."
She intentionally emphasized the word 'Secretary' she smiled disdainfully at me.
I frowned, Nathan had given me a week off, telling me to resume the following week.
I would go drop some files I thought, then I'd head back home,"
The elevator ride was silent, I looked down at my feet. Lisa stood aside, stone-faced.
We got into the office, I immediately busied myself, I wanted to drop off the finished proposals I'd spent all week doing.
"Rose, please get me a cup of coffee from Starbucks across the street, no cream."
I paused, Who did think she was? I grumbled mentally.
"Be fast about it," Lisa said, she went back into the office.
I sighed, one of the downsides of being a secretary.
I managed to get it, fifteen minutes later I stepped into the office.
"Oop,s" I bumped into someone, "I'm sorry, that…"
I froze, it was Nathan.
"Good morning sir, how are you feeling?" I asked.
Suddenly I realized something was wrong, Nathan was staring at me coldly.
"Where have you been? Could you explain yourself?"
What was going on? I wondered, I couldn't remember doing anything wrong.
"I… I just stepped out to get Miss Lisa some coffee" I answered.
"Ohh there you are," Lisa walked up to me, "Such a darling, thank you."
She rubbed Nathan's shoulder, "Don't be too harsh on her Darling, I'm sure she didn't mean it." Lisa walked out.
Her words made me frown further, I had a bad feeling about this.
Nathan sat behind his desk, I stood in front of him, not quite sure what to say.
The door suddenly opened and Brandon walked in.
"I'd like to know what message was related to Miss Rose last week when I was indisposed," Nathan spoke, his face was dark and forbidding.
My heart skipped a beat.
"As per your orders sir, I told Miss Rose to commence consultation."
What!? I shuddered in disbelief, what consultation?
"Sir… this must be an…"
"You'll speak only when spoken to Miss Rose," Nathan snapped.
He stood up, his dark eyes made me shudder.
"I believe, Miss Rose," he turned, and he paced slowly to the transparent glass with a view of the city.
"I believe that a good deed should be rewarded, you saved my life. But…" Nathan's voice steeled.
"That does not in any way mean you're an exception to the duties I expect of you.
This case will be handled by HR (Human Resources), I also have the power to fire you at my discretion."
I paled in shock, but what did I do? I obeyed orders to stay home for a week, unless… I shuddered, I stared at Brandon… unless he lied to me.
But why? I couldn't understand, why would he lie.
The door suddenly opened, and Lisa walked in.
Everything became clear, she was the one behind all this I realized.
"Darling, I said you shouldn't be harsh to Rose,if she hadn't saved you, I…" Lisa sobbed, I watched speechlessly.
"She even organized a welcome special for saving you," Lisa murmured, and she smiled at me.
Nathan's face darkened, he glared at me coldly, "Sir…I can explain."
"Enough," Nathan waved his hands,
"You'll await the decision of the HR, if you repeat any more of such mistakes Miss Rose, there won't be a job to come back to."
I lowered my head, "Yes Sir."
As I turned to leave, I caught Lisa's eyes, she smiled coldly.
I felt played, after all I'd done, he couldn't even give me a chance to explain.
Brandon walked out, he refused to look at me in the eye.
"Rose," Nathan called me.
I went back into the office.
"I need all these arranged, sorted and reviewed for the project presentation tomorrow."
Nathan pushed a thick stack of files, they must have been more than a dozen, "This should be on my desk by tomorrow morning."
My heart sank, how on earth was I expected to get all that ready by tomorrow?
Nathan arched an eyebrow, "Is there a problem Miss Rose?"
"No sir." I shook my head, I took the stack of files with me.
I stared at them speechlessly outside.
Minutes later Lisa walked out of the office, she smiled coldly at me.
"A little word of advice Miss Rose," she paused beside my desk.
"The frog lusting over the swan can also become prey to the swan's mate."
I paled, what have I gotten myself into?
I felt like the world around me was spinning."Rose… Get this set of files to HR immediately.Call Mr. O'Shea and speak to him about the proposal. I don't care what you do; just sell it.Decline this invitation.Stamp these files. Yes, I meant every single one."Nathan had been barking orders nonstop; I felt exhausted. I've been on my feet all day.The temptation overcame me again. I glanced at my watch; it was just past two.I sighed frustratedly. Why couldn't the time speed up a bit? I grumbled as I stamped the thick sheet of paper.Nathan had dumped them earlier; I was to stamp every single one. How was that possible? I'd wondered in shock as I stared at the pile; they were numbered in hundreds."Hey, you look beat; are you okay?" Justine suddenly stepped in. "I didn't see you come out for lunch."I nodded wearily. "I've been up to my neck in this; he needs it ready before he goes."We spoke in low tones,so Nathan wouldn't overhear us."What!?... But that's impossible." Justine sta
My mind went blank at the realization. Who could be the one responsible for this? I had to let Nathan know.My impulse was to pick up the phone and call, but I paused, it was too late, three thirty in the morning,if I woke Nathan up by this time he'd give me nothing but grief later on.“Justine, let's keep this aside and get the remaining files done and tomorrow I'll tell Nathan about this.”I stayed silent for a moment but Justine didn't answer“Justine?”I called a few more times but she didn't answer, she must have fallen asleep I thought a bit guiltily, I'd made her stay up the whole night.I slowly audited the remaining files, my eyes were heavy, but I pushed on, I couldn't stop now.The first ray of sun had just pierced through the early morning haze when I finished the last file, signed and stamped.I smiled satisfactorily, exhaustion hit me like a big ride, and before I knew It I was fast asleep.*********“Rose… Rose wake up”Justine tapped my arm, I woke up with a start.“I
Rose had the sense of her world fracturing into thousands. Her head was a dizzy mix of rapid heartbeats and fragmented, incoherent thoughts while Nathan looked at her with stone cold eyes. What really struck Gail, in the heart more than anything else was Justine's betrayal. The room shrunk in size, the walls quashing themselves closer and nearer by every passing secondThe air in Nathan's office, so commanding and sterile before felt oppressive now. Rose gasped unevenly, the atmosphere heavy and harsh. All she could focus on was fear and confusion. What had just happened? How did we get at that point so fast? For a moment though, as Jansen and Julian walked the hall to let them out into whatever remained in their lives for the day that fear gnawed at Rose from inside. She could still hear Julian whispering his threat: 'Be carful, Miss.Rose. “Yeah, I think you read with the wrong cat.Rose's eye drilled into Nathan as he rose slowly, his expression unreadable. The accusation weighed th
The air in Nathan's office felt thick with tension. After Justin betrayed her, I found myself there feeling betrayed and confused. Nathan's cold, calculating eyes were locked on mine, and I could see his mind changing gear."Miss Rose," he began in a surprisingly calm voice, "you seem to have made an extravagant accusation. Which, unfortunately, has not been accepted."I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "Sir, I—""Enough," he interrupted, holding up his hand to quiet me. "You're obviously under a lot of stress. I suggest you take the rest of the day off. We'll meet again tomorrow to discuss your future here."My heart sank. future? Was he thinking of firing me? I nodded and turned to leave, my legs like lead.As I left his office, I could feel Julian’s gaze cold and calculating. His smirk was the last thing I saw before he closed the door behind me. I had to clear my head and figure out what to do next.Stepping outside, I was hit by a fresh breeze, and realized I had been holding my br
The city skyline stretched out before me, and I could clearly see lights that seemed to pulsate with life. I stood at the window of my new office, above the busy streets below, and marveled at how much my life had changed in such a short time.Nathan's new company, Lexington Enterprises, had welcomed us with open arms. The change went well, thanks in no small part to Nathan's good planning and leadership. He was right; We did make a great team.Sitting in the role of Nathan’s partner, I thrived in ways I never imagined. The challenges were many, but so were the rewards. I was learning more every day and growing personally and professionally. One morning, Nathan called me into his office. He was sitting at his desk, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Rose," he began, "we have another project I'd like you to lead."I looked up curiously. "What's the job?"He handed me a file. "It's a merger with a small tech company. They're new but struggling financially. I believe they have a lot
The merger with TechWave was a huge success, and our collaborative efforts were beginning to pay off. Lexington Enterprises was gaining recognition in the engineering world, and innovation was stronger than ever. Nathan and I had found some nice tunes that made our lot easier. It wasn’t just colleagues; We were a formidable group. As I entered the office one morning, I saw a familiar face in the lobby. She was Sarah, Nathan's former fiancée. My heart skipped a beat, and a knot slipped into my stomach. What did he want now?"Rose," he called, his voice soft as ever.I forced a smile and walked over to him. "Sarah, what brings you here?""Nathan and I have a meeting," she rolled her eyes, looking around the busy office."He's in his office," I said, trying to keep my voice neutral. "I'll let him know you're here."As I walked into Nathan's office, I couldn't shake the feeling of being overwhelmed. Sarah's presence always seemed to cause trouble, and I feared what this visit might mean f
The days following Nathan’s confession were emotional. Our newfound relationship breathed life into my routine, and I looked forward to every moment we shared. But in the excitement, there was an underlying tension that I couldn’t quite figure out.One morning, as I was sorting files in Nathan’s office, his phone buzzed with a call. Looking at the screen, I saw a familiar name: Frederick Keen, Nathan’s estranged older brother. My curiosity piqued, and I took the call."Hello, Frederick," I said, trying to keep my voice low."Rose? What are you?" Frederick's voice was sharp, almost accusatory. "Where's Nathan?""He's in a meeting right now. Can I take a message?" I replied hoping to spread the pressure.Frederick hesitated, then sighed. "Tell him it's urgent. We need to talk."He noted the urgency in her voice and promised to get the message across. After the call, I couldn’t help but wonder what could be so significant that Frederick, who had been absent from Nathan’s life for years,
The weeks that followed were a flurry of activity. Nathan and I were fully immersed in trying to stabilize Frederick’s economy and protect Lexington’s businesses It was a difficult time, but our relationship grew stronger with each passing moment. We had found a rhythm that balanced work and personal life and felt unstoppable. One morning, as I was preparing for a meeting, Nathan approached me with a thoughtful expression. "Rose, there's something I'm thinking about," he said in a serious voice."What's the matter?" I asked, pausing to give him my full attention."We have to work out the situation with my dad," Nathan said. "He needs to know about Frederick's problems and the potential danger to the company. We can't take this any further."I nodded, understanding the gravity of his words. Nathan’s father Richard was a pillar of Lexington Enterprises for decades. He deserved to know what was going on, even if it meant facing harsh truths."You're right," I agreed. "We must tell him at
The quite magnificent ballroom at this very lavish venue shimmered with the beautiful twinkling lights, and the very air was perfumed with heady roses in full bloom and tasteful arrangements. It writhed with energy and love, mumbling softly with murmurs of conversations and bursts of laughter. Because this was no ordinary day; this was the day that Nathan and Rose would rejoice in the commitment they had made to one another. Rose stood in front of the full-length mirror in her elegant bridal suite, her heart racing with anticipation. The reflection that was returned to her was nothing else but radiant. The word-thin wedding gown was airy, made out of delicate lace and silk, stretching across her figure in a lithe way that then fell into a soft, cascading train. Her beautiful hair had soft curls that would be pinned at the back, with a simple but breathtaking tiara to hold it in place and catch the light so beautifully. She also had a soft veil, just slightly over her face, to add tha
It had been weeks since Nathan and Rose had worked at all. Their investigation of the financial scandal was at its peak, and they were close to discovering one huge grid of deception and corruption. Their indefatigable research, endless hours of analysis, and weeks of strategic planning were all leading up to this moment. It would all lead up to that high-stakes presentation to the key stakeholders, and they wanted to be sure to make it count. The morning light saw Nathan and Rose enter the office, their eyes aflame with anticipation. This afternoon was the presentation, and they still had to make some final touches on it. All around the office was a deep silence; only the soft hum of computers and the scattered rustling of papers broke it.Nathan was already at his desk with the last copy of their report material, scanning through it. His eyes skimmed across the face of the document, running past and making sure all the details had been right and evidence was perfectly presented. He
The office of Sanders Enterprises was bustling with activity. If the charity gala might have turned out to be a success in many ways, the real work was only about to start. Nathan and Rose were back in their office, sifting through all the information they had gathered, determined to crack the case wide open. The only sounds in the office were the tapping on the keyboards and, once in a while, the rustling of paper. Nathan was working behind his mahogany desk, going through his notes with great care. Rose was at her desk facing him, doing her own research in her documents and emails, searching for information."Rose, take a look at this," Nathan said, breaking the silence. He handed her a folder filled with documents. "I dug up some interesting information from my conversations at the gala. It seems there might be a connection between the recent financial discrepancies and a certain group of investors."She took the folder and turned the pages. "This is big," Rose said, eyes wide. "We
The grand ballroom of the city's most posh hotel was a glittering array of evening gowns and sharply dressed suits. The cream of the city comes out for the annual charity gala, which tonight wasn't just a social event for Nathan and Rose. They had to network, gather information from influential people who could hold the key to cracking the investigation.Nathan and Rose entered together. Both of them commanded attention. Rose was sleek in a navy blue gown, while Nathan himself looked sharp in his tailored suit and the erstwhile confidence that reflected in his stance. It was easy to tell that they were partners, and their combined charisma drew some admiring glances."You ready for this?" Nathan asked me, his eyes flicking around the room.Rose twirled the intricate necklace about her neck. "Ready as I'll ever be. We need to be strategic tonight—make the right connections and gathering useful intel without raising suspicion."Nathan nodded, his eyes thinning a little as he surveyed th
There was a hum of activity in the conference room, where the team had gauged for a necessary briefing. Nathan and Rose fronted the table, their faces showing a combination of fatigue and determination. It had reached a very crucial point in the investigation, and every upcoming move would turn out to be significant in coming up with the whole scope of violation and all those who were involved in it."Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Nathan started off, the steadiness of his voice come from he had thought over this speech many times during the day. "We have achieved much in the past few days, but we are now at a very critical point. We must lock in our plan of attack and complete the next phase.Rose stepped to the front, surprisingly confident for someone who's been up for a day and a half and under some hard, very hard, pressure. "We have the manipulated data recovered and followed one lead that might mean a big breakthrough. It looks like our case is about to overlap
The air conditioning hummed, and fingers tapped at the keyboards as Nathan sat at his desk, poring over the latest reports and figures that filled his screen. The weight of the investigation and impending decisions weighed heavily upon him, but he could feel the end in sight, like the calm before a storm.Rose was sitting at her desk, working hard; she had her face contorted in a manner that showed what strenuous efforts she was putting in for concentration. Her fingers were running on the keyboard, typing as fast as they could while going through the remaining pieces in the puzzle. The recent breakthroughs had been promising, but there were still loose ends to tie up. Nathan smiled at her focus and dedication; she'd been his anchor through all this turmoil."Nathan, I've found something you might want to see," Rose's voice broke through his thoughts. He looked up, immediately interested. "What is it?"Rose walked over to his desk, setting a stack of documents in front of him. "These
The atmosphere at the office was one of urgency as Nathan and his crew prepared for the last lap of their inquiry. In the past few days, they had uncovered some things that moved them closer to unwrapping the truth, and things could get very personal. Nathan's concentration was so tight as he held on to new findings with unrelenting zeal to finally resolve the breach and secure the future he envisioned.Rose had by now become a deep well of strength and inspiration to Nathan. Her steadfast support and encouragement were touching throughout the investigation, and it was as clear as daylight that the role she was going to play in their journey was far from over. His eyes wandered to the other side of the room, where she was working at her desk, poring over with furrows on her brow."Nathan, we need to talk about what happens now," Andrew's voice cut into Nathan's reverie. "We got some new information in—a real bombshell."Nathan nodded and laid aside the report he had been perusing. "Le
The rain had begun pounding against his windshield as Nathan cruised around the city. Its cadence was almost soothing against the turmoil brewing inside. The lead from the previous night could possibly take them to a real turning point in their investigation, and Nathan would see it through no matter what. Added to the weight of the ongoing breach, with personal stakes now involved, this moment became critical. As he neared the address that Andrew had given him, Rose continued to creep into Nathan's mind. Her constant reassurance during the probe felt like a lighthouse in the darkness, and he could not help feeling they were very close to something of real significance. The stakes had become personal as much as professional, something he had not considered from the beginning, and Nathan felt himself more committed than ever to closing the breach and securing their future.Nathan parked in front of the nondescript building, then took a deep breath. It looked like an older building, and
The office was unusually quiet when Nathan arrived early the next morning; the storm of the night before had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clear sky. His mind was still racing from last night's clandestine meeting and the new lead on the breach. Though aware that the information he had been given could be pivotal, he needed to carefully assess the situation and further strategize on their next move.Rose was already at her desk when he walked in, relaxed and professional despite the late night she, too, had pulled off. She turned her face toward him, offering a reassuring smile, with her eyes speaking volumes between relief and anxiety."Good morning, Nathan. How was it last night?" she asked, her voice soft but loaded with interest.Deep breath; thanks to her support, Nathan could do so. "Morning, Rose. It's been a long night, but we've finally got some new information. Looks like this breach is much bigger and more complicated than what we thought. I'm going to go through everythi
