The roads to the diner were treacherous and hadn't been plowed out yet, but Carter's high-off-ground truck could make it through this amount of snow. After they parked, Carter said, "I'm glad we had four-wheel drive and good traction tires."

They recognized a few vehicles in the parking lot then decided to make a run for the front door. Susan greeted them and introduced them to whoever she thought they hadn't met yet. The decorations were beautiful. The wedding ones mixed with Christmas were gorgeous.

"Carter, Mitch brought your mother, and they're already in the party room." Susan took Carter's overcoat and hung it up. "Janelle you should probably get changed. Everything's ready except for the minister, and he's probably delayed because of the roads. But don't you worry, he'll be here."

Susan showed them to the new office area where she could change. Edie said, "Your makeup looks great, by the way. Maybe touch up your lipstick. Oh, your hair. You didn't get a veil, so what do yo

VOLUME EIGHT: THE SHERIFF'S CHRISTMASDecember 15thMitch smiled; he knew it was early. Mitch was an early riser, always had been and now he was used to sleeping in short intervals. Ronnie, not so much. He lifted his knee onto Ronnie's hip and "spooned," snuggly warm under sheets, blankets and a quilt. It was chilly in their bedroom, but a comfortable sleeping temperature. His arm wrapped around Ronnie and he held a breast in his hand. Moving a couple fingers, he found a nipple and tweaked it between his thumb and index finger. It was hard and erect, just like him. He pressed his erection into her butt cheek, but she ignored him. Surely, she can't be that deep in sleep, he thought. He leaned over and kissed her neck, and along her jawline. Her hand waved across her face to get rid of the annoying "bug." He chuckled. He wasn't that easy to get rid of when he wanted something. And he really wanted her. They'd married last summer, a few short months ago, and he still couldn'

The boy shook and snow crystals danced to the floor. "I was freezing out there, so I came in. The nice lady told me you were in here," his bright blue eyes wandered around the room, taking everything in. Vic placed her hands on his shoulders, somewhat protectively. "Is this where I'm going to live?" The boy asked, looking directly at Mitch. "My name's Ronnie, what's your name?" Ronnie held out a hand, he placed his small one in hers, shook once, and said, "Wyatt Morgan and I'm five and a half years old. I need a place to live since my parents got burned up in the house.""Oh, I'm so sorry," Ronnie said. Then Mitch leaned down and said, "I'm Sheriff Mitch Rogers, it's real nice to meet you, Wyatt Morgan." They shook hands but Wyatt's eyes never left Mitch's face."You're not going to take me back to that big, cold house with all those other kids, are you? Because I'll just run away again. I know when I'm not welcome.""That's enough Wyatt, please, let me handle this." Vic tur

"Victoria is leaving, she's going to stay somewhere in Jackson," Mitch raised his hands when Ronnie was about to interrupt, and then continued, "and we'll catch up with her tomorrow as we told Wyatt.""And, what else is going on? Is Wyatt your son, Mitch?" Ronnie stared in her husband's brown eyes with the gold flecks she loved so much. Mitch stared into her eyes, "No, he's not." He stepped to her, pulled her up against him. "That's the truth, I have no reason to lie. I'm not letting you go, ever, no matter what.""Wyatt is exactly who is says he is, his parents did die in a house fire, he has no siblings and no real family. I remember how much Mitch enjoyed kids and came here first but-""What else, Mitch. I want to know now." Ronnie had venom in her words."She's nothing, nothing but an old friend to me." Mitch stared at Victoria. "And there never will be anything between us, really never was."Ronnie turned away, relief filled her, and she exhaled a breath she hadn't kn

The ride was exhilarating; the near hyperthermic cold air emasculating. They were on a trail of some kind, she knew, because she could see tracks in the snow; horses and snowmobiles or quads, as well. When they seemed to reach the top and ready to go down the other side, Mitch turned left, and they rode along the ridge. Ronnie looked left and then right in search of the perfect tree. There were small clusters of trees and then some lone ones. She could see right away why they were still there. At a trail head, or so the sign read, Mitch turned right, and it seemed as if they were in Santa's wonderland. Beautiful pine scent wafted in the air along with the frigid air, and an outcropping of all kinds, sizes and shapes of pine trees. Mitch stopped in the middle of the path and turned the motor off. He held up his hand and she waited in silence. And, she waited. Another minute or so, he turned around and faced her."Do you hear it?" He whispered to her."Hear what?"He held his h

Arriving at the house, they went inside first to make way for the trees. As Ronnie opened the door, she heard out-of-tune singing of "Rudolf" and the fragrance of peanut butter and chocolate, baking sugar cookies and some other scent she couldn't identify lingered in the air. She stopped before she turned the corner from the living room into the family kitchen and den area. Mitch wasn't prepared for her sudden stop and ran into her, almost knocking them both to the floor. Mitch peeked around her. Wyatt sat on a bar chair, dressed in one of Aunt Sally's old aprons, trays of cookies in front of him and based on the flour on the sleeves of his shirt, he'd helped make cut-out sugar cookies. Now he was decorating. Wyatt held in his hand a medium-sized pastry bag filled with what looked like brown frosting; a reindeer cookie placed in front of him. "Ms. Marie, should I make him all brown and then a red nose? I think this one looks like Rudolph.""Wyatt, sweetie, you can make it any color

After numerous way-too-many trips up and down the stairs, they had all the decorations ready for on the tree. Mitch, with the help of Wyatt was setting it up now. "Wow, it smells so foresty." Wyatt looked at everyone. "You know, like in the forest of trees.""Oh, the pine tree smell. You're right, it does smell foresty," Ronnie answered. "Wyatt have you ever had a real tree for Christmas?""No, I've never really had a Christmas." Wyatt answered as he rang a jingle bell he'd picked out of the box."This is my first real tree, too. And our," she pointed to Mitch and herself, "first Christmas together. My parents never had a real one when I was little. And my mom always decorated the fake one while I was at school, so I've never decorated one either." Ronnie held out her hand to him for a low five. "Are you ready to learn how with me?""Okay, but Ms. Marie said we're going to sing Christmas carols and have hot chocolate.""And I'm sure we will. After all, we have lots of holi

Mitch glanced from the tree to Wyatt. "Good job, Wyatt. We have a couple more boxes to look through. Wanna help me?""Sure, you have so many.""Yes, we do, many years of collecting and saving. You'll have some like this too when you grow older." Ronnie tapped his nose."I will, wow." Wyatt skipped the short distance to Mitch and told him."Wyatt, look at these, they're stockings to hang at the fireplace. Aren't they fancy?" Ronnie held them up."Yeah, but none of them have my name on, do they?" Wyatt stood beside her, his hands behind his back."I think the one with your name will be at the house of your new family," Mitch answered. "It's going to be exciting for you this year. A new family, a new house, and probably a new school. You have so many things to look forward to." Mitch continued to hang ornaments."I don't think so. I haven't had a stocking or a tree or presents, or any of that stuff. Nothing." Wyatt sputtered.Ronnie saw the look of desperation of flight cr

"Okay," Wyatt answered in a ready-to-sleep-hoarse voice.Ronnie took Wyatt's hand and headed down the hall to her room, Mugsy following close behind. When she opened her bedroom door, Mitch was asleep, his reading glasses on and a newspaper on his face. Ronnie held a finger over her mouth, and said, "Sshhhh.""Mugsy, you can sleep with Mr. Wyatt tonight. He needs your company and your warmth." She whispered, glanced at Wyatt, "He really does keep you warm.""Come on Mugsy, be a good girl." Ronnie started out the door with Mugsy following but Wyatt hung back. "Come on Wyatt.""Your bed is big, there's enough room, we can all fit." Wyatt stood beside the bed."Remember you wanted your own room?" "Oh, yeah, that's' right." Wyatt followed her and Mugsy up the back stairs and into his room. Ronnie turned down the covers and patted the sheets. Wyatt slid in and Mugsy soon joined him on top of the bed. Ronnie tucked Wyatt in and gave him a kiss on his forehead. But when she tu

This would be Mitch's first time of attending the entire celebration with his three best friends and their growing families. He'd get to hear all the news first-hand and share his own. Last year he and Ronnie barely had time to stop in and say Merry Christmas but this year, he had news to announce. He was married to the love of his life, and already had a six-year-old son. He smiled as he buttoned his Christmas vest. This was about as Christmas as he got, and it would have to do.Wyatt blasted through their closed bedroom door, "Slow down there, son. Where's the fire?" Mitch asked."I'm ready to go." "I see that. Where'd you get that beautiful Christmas sweater? I love it." Mitch asked."Ron'er, Mom laid clothes on the bed and put on everything.""That was nice," Mitch said, as the bathroom door opened, and Ronnie stepped out.Mitch smiled; his wife was so beautiful, her eyes wide and her face glowed. She twirled around in her red sweater with a green print Christmas scarf

December 24thRonnie woke, still tired. She moved closer to Mitch and he automatically pulled her closer. "I'm still tired. Is it really time to get up?"Mitch rubbed her arm, "Me too," he mumbled. "What's all the noise out in the kitchen?""I don't know, it's probably Mom, Marie and maybe Tory making breakfast. Wyatt, hopefully, is still asleep," Ronnie said, her voice hoarse."So many things to do today. I need to wrap presents," Ronnie yawned stretched her arms over her head. "Maybe you can take Wyatt to the office.""Don't need to, I hired two new deputies who are working the next few days. I actually have a few days of vacation now. Maybe your mom and Tory could keep him occupied out there.""Maybe," Ronnie said, then Mitch kissed her neck. "Oh, a little frisky this morning.""Every morning, but we never have time, remember?""Oh, I remember, then I can't take my eyes off you while I'm at work.""Do I distract you?" Mitch said in a sing songy voice."Yes, you d

December 23rdRonnie helped clear the table and put leftovers away. "Wyatt, will you please go and get your shower and ready for bed now?"Wyatt did a double take and screwed up his nose. Ronnie wasn't giving him a chance to ask why or to say, "it's too early." She explained it, "I know it's early, but we have to share the water with everyone else who wants a shower.""Okay," Wyatt said before he scurried up the stairs.Mitch came up behind Ronnie, wrapping his arms around her waist. She tilted her head back and kissed his lips. "Still nine?" She asked."Yup, I'll be getting a shower next while you tuck him in and then it'll be nine, I'm hoping anyway.""Sounds good. I'll play with the baby until Wyatt is done and then after a story, I'll meet you in bed." Ronnie smiled when Mitch kissed her neck. The anticipation was unnerving. Marie and Janet were having after dinner coffee at the breakfast table back and suggested playing cards. Tory handed Angelina to Ronnie while Ma

"Sure," Wyatt said as he left Ronnie's side to hug her."Oh, that felt so good. Thank you." Marie said."Something smells good. Are you baking cookies?" Wyatt asked."No, I did that earlier and don't worry, I left some for you to decorate. And do you know what we're going to do with all the cookies then?" Marie asked."Eat them till they're all gone," Wyatt guessed."No, silly, we, you and I, and maybe Janet here if she wants to help, are going to put them in these pretty containers and deliver them." Marie explained, her hands on her hips."Why would we deliver them? To who? I thought they were for all of us." Wyatt's eyes welled with tears."Oh, dear boy, don't worry. There will be plenty for us, we aren't giving them all away. The people we deliver them to aren't able to celebrate Christmas, they elderly and

After a quick hug for Ronnie's parents when she met them at baggage claim, she said, "Hi Mom, and Dad, how was your flight?""It was a long, I can tell you that much." Her father, John Travis exclaimed. "I'm ready for a nap.""You're in luck. I happen to know a great B&B that has a room with your name on the door." Ronnie chuckled as she helped load their suitcases into the trunk. "How's Tory and the baby?""The baby really getting cute, and you can talk to Tory yourself and find out how she's doing." Ronnie's mother Janet said, her voice tailing off at the end.Once settled in the back seat, Ronnie asked, "Do you need to pick up anything before we head home?""Nope, I'm anxious to get to that bed you talked about." Ronnie stepped out of the bathroom, saw Wyatt standing right where she'd left him, "Oh Wyatt, why didn't you go the kitchen and find Marie?" She asked him.He was immobile, his head hung, staring at the ground. She reached out her hand and said, "Come on, there's nothing to be afraid of. I'm not going to run off or disappear, I promise."He grasped her hand and squeezed, then they walked to the kitchen together. Marie was putting something in the oven to slow cook for dinner. "Good morning, you two. How are you doing today, Wyatt?""I'm not in trouble yet, am I?" He looked at Ronnie."Of course not. I can't even think of anything you've done since you've been here to be in trouble about. And just so you know, if or when you are in trouble, I'll make sure you know why and what the punishment of any is. Now let's eat." Ronnie smiled at him."How about French toast, Wyatt? Do you like that?"He shrugged. "Let's give it a try if you've already made it, otherwise we can have

The following morning, Ronnie woke up late, or so she thought, because there was more light poking in her squinted eyes. She tried to move but something heavy was laying halfway across her chest. "Mugsy, come on, time to get up." But there wasn't any change. She opened her eyes and looked in the childish face of Wyatt. He was laying on her left shoulder, rolled into a fetal position and hanging onto his teddy bear's one arm. Awe! She smiled. There was no way she could get out of bed without waking him. She reached for her phone and checked the time. It was after eight, Mitch had already gone to work, and Mugsy probably got up with him for breakfast. She caressed Wyatt's baby-soft cheek and brushed his light brown hair off his forward. He needed a haircut, she thought. Then his hand released the bear from his grasp and wrapped his arm around her neck. I love you too, Wyatt, my sweet innocent boy. She rubbed his arm that lay across her neck and studied his face. He smiled in his sle

Ronnie ran into a number a shops, and bought underwear and socks for Wyatt as well as deodorant. She also found a toy store and, with the help of the clerk, was able to provide her with an assortment of games and toys for her to select from. Her choices filled two bags. "Can I leave these here until my husband can bring the car around? We're parked a couple blocks over." Ronnie asked the store clerk while on the lookout for Mitch or Wyatt. They had to be done by now and waiting on her."Sure, I'll put your name on them and keep them behind the counter. What's your name?" She asked."Rogers," Ronnie answered and smiled."Like the Sheriff?" She asked."Yes, exactly, I'm his wife." Ronnie said."I heard about him getting married, but I didn't realize he had any children," the clerk stapled the paper onto their bags."Thank you and Merry Christmas!" Ronnie said as she turned and headed out the door. She stopped in front of a store that cut off the bitter cold wind and called

Ronnie took everything out of Wyatt's small suitcase and placed it on the bed to take inventory. He only had a few shirts and some 'hi-water' short pants. No sweaters, or long pants. He'd have to wear the pants and every shirt he had. Two pair of clean underwear included but looked way too small. "Okay, sweetie, this is what we're going to do. You can wear all these shirts today, so which one is your favorite?" Ronnie asked.Wyatt looked them over like he'd never seen them before, then chose a blue Batman one. Ronnie helped him remove his pajama top and get the T-shirts on one after the other. The outer one he chose was long sleeve and fit perfectly over the others. Then she handed him a pair of pants, the longest ones she could find. "You put clean underwear on last night after your bath, right?" Ronnie asked. Wyatt nodded."You look nice and warm," Mitch proclaimed from the doorway. "Maybe we ell be able to sled ride later after all.""After a few stores, he'll be fine
