Today's patrol was uneventful. Blade led the new werewolves around the area to familiarize themselves with the terrain of the forest, and they did not encounter any rogues. Blade wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or suspicious. It was odd to not even have caught a whiff of their scent given how often they had been running into rogues before.

Arthur sighed as they reached the training ground and said goodbye to the rest of the patrol, bounding up the hill towards their house. The sun hadn’t set yet, so Daphne was, likely, still making dinner.

He reached the door, shifted into his human form, and opened the door carefully.

"Daphne, I'm back!"

"Dinner's almost done!" She replied from the kitchen.

He smiled a bit, happy at the sound of her voice before going to wash up and sit at the table. She served them both and set an extra bottle beside his plate. It was small and unmarked. He didn’t know what it could be, but Daphne didn’

Rex called the patrol members to the training ground the next day with a solemn air."Good to see most of you up and running again. Good hustle last night," Rex said. "Just in case the rogues manage to slip through some time in the future, I'm having the patrol make a trip to the nearby river to start building an emergency water supply."Blade nodded, "The injured will stay behind."Mile huffed, "No way am I getting left behind!"Blade eyed him carefully before shaking his head. If the man hadn't learned about underestimating the rogues yet then there was only one way to teach him."Fine. We leave in an hour."The patrol got ready and led the small group out of the village in their usual formation with the Milky River Pack trailing behind them or slotting in where they felt made sense. It was a bit awkward, but they were less vocal about their complaints. The doctor was at the center of the formation as they got to the river.A

“The village is under attack!” Arthur cried, running back the way they came.He heard the others following him, but they couldn’t keep up with him and their footsteps soon grew too distant to hear. Arthur pushed himself to run faster, fear building in his heart.Daphne wasn’t responding to him. What had happened to her?He couldn’t hear or feel her. That shouldn’t have been possible unless she was dead.He turned from that thought and ran faster. He reached the edge of the village and the scent of blood filled his nose. His stomach turned and he stumbled a bit at the sight of the bodies strewn across the main path into the village. He didn’t know how many were dead, but he was glad to see Rex and a few other familiar faces stumbling and carrying bodies off the street.“Arthur!” Rex called, his voice tense and grateful.Arthur didn’t stop and turned down the path to take the f

The first thing she realized was that her head hurt and her body ached. Daphne opened her eyes to find the world sort of blurry before her memories came to her.The attack. Owen’s chuckling. She’d struggled. She sat up as her heart began to thud hard and fast in her chest. She’d been kidnapped by Owen. Where was she? Would Arthur be able to find her? Was everyone dead or had they only attacked the village to kidnap her and left everyone else alive? What did he want with her?She shuddered in fear and tears pricked her eyes. She cast her gaze around. The room was solid stone it looked like, dark and cold with only the smallest sliver of light coming from down the corridor outside the heavy iron door. She struggled to her feet to feel around the room and found there was only one chair in the room, but there was a small window on the far wall. There was just enough room to squeeze through if it hadn’t been covered with bars. Sh

Owen was stunned as she cursed at him. Slowly, he released her and let her fall to the ground, coughing and scrambling for breath. He hadn’t expected the human to resist him or show such backbone. She laughed at him, raspy and derisive, “Am I wrong to call you an asshole?”Owen sneered down at her as she lifted her head, rubbing her throat.“You’re Arthur’s cousin, and I am Arthur's mate. We should be a little more cordial, right?” She chuckled. “You should show a little respect to me, but look what you’ve done? You only wanted to use me to defeat Arthur! Your a heartless, evil bastard and no different than those rogues!”Owen growled at her, feeling his fury start to tear out of his control. How easy it would be to shift into his wolf form, pounce, and tear this woman to pieces. He could almost taste her blood in his mouth. The only thing that restrained him was the fact that he ne

Owen had closed the door behind him when he left with a soft clinking sound. She thought it was him locking it, but there was the smallest sliver of light coming from the doorway. She drew closer and found the door was slightly ajar. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to give her hope. She gripped as much of the edge as she could and tried to open it, but the door wouldn’t move. She lifted a leg to kick against the door frame to try and push it open and it barely let out a creak before she lost her grip and went crashing to the ground. She huffed incredulously. What would Owen need to lock the door if it was impossibly heavy!A howl sounded from below the tower. She hurried to the window to look down at the rogues who seemed to be facing something oncoming.Had Arthur found her?She had to get out of here. Daphne worried her lip, casting her gaze anxiously at the chair inside the room. It was wood and old, but it was her only hope. She lunged

Daphne looked in horror at Arthur. His eyes were red and furious. They didn’t feel the way they usually did. Rather precious gems sparkling with his emotions, they seemed like pools of blood glaring at Owen. His body was shaking, yet he’d stopped. She didn’t know what to think. He’d attacked someone from Sharp Armor, yet he hadn’t killed her.“A-Arthur?”He didn’t respond, shaking with fury. He’d killed many rogues, too many to count. The scent of blood was making her gag so she could only imagine that he was lost to it as well.Owen let out a low laugh, “Just you wait… You’ll see the truth… He’s a monster just like me…”“Arthur?” Daphne tried again, but it didn’t seem as though he could hear her.Her heart lurched as she realized her worst fears had come true: he couldn’t hear her.“Come on then, Arthur!&rd

Arthur smiled sweetly at her as if he were in a dream then his eyes had rolled back into his skull and he collapsed. The full weight of him knocked her over as she screamed in panic.“Arthur! Arthur? Are you okay? Say something!”No matter how she screamed, he didn’t move. His eyes didn’t flutter. He seemed so still. If not for the rise and fall of his chest, Daphne would have thought he was dead.“Daphne,” Blade said hoarsely, “Just calm down. He’s just tired.”Daphne trembled, stroking his hair as Blade sighed and turned his head.“We need to get out of here.”“The village is closest.”“It’s not in any state to treat injuries.” Blade said. Daphne shuddered thinking of the attack. “The castle is our best bet.”She swallowed. Was it Arthur’s castle? Her heart clenched with grief. She’d forgotten her questions

He held Daphne’s hand and walked down the stairs after Rex and Blade towards the sound of people in the great hall where they usually held the meeting. There were a lot more servants than there had been before. As they passed, they looked at Arthur with expectant and eager eyes. Arthur didn’t meet their gazes, deeply uncomfortable with their presence. “Looks like the meal isn’t served yet,” Rex said. Blade smirked, “Plenty of time for you to dress for dinner.” “Dress?” Arthur asked, suspicious of their tones. “Oh, yes, the head of the servants has been on and on about it for the past three days…” Arthur rolled his eyes, “No, thanks.” “Arthur,” Daphne said looking at him, “Won’t you at least humor them a little? They’ve been working really hard.” He pouted, his shoulders slumping before glancing at the group of servants who seemed to be eagerly awaiting the sign that it would be okay. He didn’t want to. Honestly, the only

Arthur was in a bad mood, but as Daphne held onto him, she couldn’t help but laugh. They’d left the cottage about an hour ago and they hadn’t gone for. If she didn’t know better, she would have sworn he was walking in circles just to avoid leaving.“Oh, Arthur, it won’t be that bad.”“We deserve at least a month,” Arthur grumbled walking through the forest. She laughed, “Is that why you’re walking so slow?”He didn’t answer and she laughed harder, leaning into the warmth of his glossy, golden fur. He’d been grumbling about heading back to deal with the mess of the werewolves and vampires for the past few days.“We don’t have to go back,” Arthur huffed. “You don’t think Nicole can’t handle those cowards?”Nicole would just as soon kill half of the pack leaders than put up with bullshit from them, but that wouldn’

Morning came slowly, waking Arthur. Daphne’s scent filled his nose and he turned to look at her, grinning at her sleeping face. As if she felt him looking at her, her eyes snapped open and their gazes met. Arthur turned, pressing his lips to hers, unable to resist the need to be closer to her, to be sure she was still his Daphne.Daphne sighed, pressing into the kiss with a little sigh. The sound sent heat through his blood until need and desperation pooled in his hips and he felt his cock swelling.Daphne gasped, as he angled his hips against hers. She looked up. Arthur’s face heated. He was going to apologize, to make some sort of excuse, but he didn’t get a chance. In a flash, he was on his back with Daphne hovering over him. He was a bit shocked at her speed and strength, but his wolf growled in contentment. Did werewolf mates tussle with one another? He’d always imagined it as sweet and gentle, but the urge to flip them over again an

Arthur chuckled at her thought. Did she think he wanted to talk about it now? He was running on adrenaline and relief. As soon as he got somewhere he knew was safe for them both, he’d probably collapse, curled around Daphne.“I haven’t changed much, Daphne.”“That’s not true,” Daphne said, “You have more scars.”Arthur shrugged, “They’ll be gone in a few days.”“Not on your skin,” Daphne said, sliding a hand over his chest as she looked up at him, “In here.”His heart sped up as their gazes met. He wanted to protest, but he couldn’t find the words. She was right. So much had happened. He’d been so used to not thinking about it before Daphne, then worrying about it with her, that losing her had left him floundering. She stepped back, taking his hands and leading him towards the house.“Come on. Let’s take a bath. I th

Arthur opened his arms trying to sweep her into his arms, but she lunged at him, wrapping her arms around him and sobbing into his shoulder. Fear filled him and anxiety. He didn’t know what to make of her sudden apology or what he should say in response.“I’m so sorry, Arthur! I should have never gone! I shouldn’t have left you. I should have made Mamie and the others leave me behind, at least they would have been alive.”Arthur’s eye burned with an unfamiliar sensation. He didn’t remember the last time he’d cried or if he’d cried at all, but the tightness in his chest felt like it was going to burst. It sounded like she was regaining her memories, but had she regained all of them? She hiccupped, “The baby… It wasn’t your fault. I…”Arthur tightened his grip on her with a relieved sigh, burying his nose in her neck.“Daphne,” he whispered. “You r

Daphne didn’t speak as they watched the fire rage, burning through vampire and werewolf corpses and surrounding John as he panicked, limping as if his leg had been injured. Daphne narrowed her eyes as he tripped on nothing. He tumbled, head over heels onto the duchess’ body, and shrieked, drawing back as the fire began to devour him.“No! Your Majesty, please!” John crawled towards them. His face twisted with desperation and terror.Daphne didn’t look away, meeting his gaze as he realized that there was nothing he could say to escape his fate. His expression turned determined as he got to his feet and tried to shake off the fire that had reached his jacket. He tore it off but another burst of fire started on his pant leg and he went down again.“That lesson about tying your boots properly,” Nicole said lightly, “That is why.”Her lips twitched into just a bit of amusement as he began to scream a

Daphne rushed to where his body stopped, pulling him onto his back as tears fell down her cheeks.“Just hold on!”Owen’s hand grabbed hers as she settled her shaking hands over the hole in his chest. Blood was bubbling up and pooling around them. Her magic warmed and stuttered trying to close the hole.“Run…” he gasped before his last breath escaped him and she could no longer feel any spark of life in him.“No…” she sniffled. “No! You can’t–”A snarl drew her attention from above. Osborn had shifted and started to barrel down the side of the hill towards her. She lunged aside, barely dodging his attack, and grabbed her sword, turning into his next attack as he skidded, turned, and lunged at her again. His claws met her blade and shoved her back and off her feet. She tumbled back and landed hard on her arm.He was too strong f

Arthur ran towards Osborn, snarling at him. Osborn didn’t seem worried, watching and waiting for him before moving at the last possible moment. He shifted into his human form so Arthur’s attack, just barely missed him before shifting back into his wolf form to snap his jaws at Arthur’s leg.Arthur shifted mid-air and rolled across the ground. His heart was hammering. If he hadn’t, there was a good chance that Osborn would have taken his leg off or at least wounded him seriously.Osborn was nothing like Owen. He had to be more careful. Osborn chuckled and turned towards him.“Hello, nephew… shame your mother manage to get you out in time… I’m impressed you have a bit of battle awareness.” Osborn laughed, dark and furious. “Next time, I’ll just take your head.”Arthur got to his feet, eyeing Osborn. They watched each other before he heard the duchess’ footsteps.&ld

Tom looked up in horror. He couldn’t believe it, but there was no mistaking Osborn even with his missing eye. He was wearing the same armor he’d gone to battle against the vampires in though it bore the signs of battle. Behind him were other werewolves in the same armor, glaring across the clearing. How could he be alive? His heart lurched as Arthur got to his feet and shifted into his wolf form at Daphne’s side. He’d been overpowered by a half-vampire woman. Arthur didn’t stand a chance against Osborn! What were they going to do?Even with the Royal family’s ability to control wolves, Arthur didn’t have the years of combat experience or the deep-seated rage that Osborn did. His legs felt weak as he turned to look at the others who looked confused and had started to engage the turned werewolves. It was uncanny and deeply disturbing to see Osborn commanding them. What would Dean have thought of his brother now

He felt the force of her swing as it missed him and knew she’d gotten stronger too.“Daphne! Stop. I don’t know what they’ve done to you, but this isn’t like you–”“You don’t know anything, murderer!”His gut clenched and for a moment he heard the furious chants of the Brown Valley pack at the back of his mind.He pushed those thoughts away and dodged another attack.“You killed my son!” Daphne screeched. Her words struck him. His blood ran cold, “What?”Daphne growled at her, “Don’t play dumb, werewolf.
