Chapter 5

Author: Rivergate Gentleman
Simon was considered decent at martial arts, but Caleb's strike left his cheek burning painfully.

Caleb's gaze was icy. "Looks like the elder Mr. Turner never taught you manners... Guess I'll have to teach you instead."

"H-how dare you hit me?!" Simon's eyes bulged, veins straining like ropes beneath his skin. He clenched his fists in rage, wanting nothing more than to tear Caleb apart.

"What's all this racket?!" A firm voice sliced through the tension. An elderly servant wheeled Damian Turner into the room. The old man's eyes were half-closed, but there was a quiet authority about him that commanded respect.

Simon was never one to miss an opportunity to blame others, and said quickly, "Grandpa, Kayla brought a con artist into our house! He even slapped me! Kayla's gotten so full of herself, she thinks she runs this family now!"

Damian's sharp gaze flicked to Kayla, and he asked her firmly, "Kayla, what's going on here?"

She hesitated briefly before she spoke, "This is Mr. Caleb Larkin. He claims he can treat your ALS, Grandpa. I wanted to give him a chance." She wasn't entirely convinced of Caleb's capabilities yet, but desperation had driven her to bring him here. Power struggles within the Turner family were growing more intense, and if Caleb failed, she would be the one suffering the consequences.

Simon sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Grandpa, this guy's definitely a fraud. I've already arranged for a real doctor to see you, so don't listen to Kayla. She's probably trying to kill you!"

There was a blur of movement, then a sharp crack echoed in the room. Simon clutched his cheek, eyes wide in disbelief. Caleb had slapped him again!

Kayla's breath hitched, and her gaze darted to Damian. Her grandfather was one of the Four Kings of the underworld in Jadewood City, and anyone who challenged his authority usually met a swift and brutal end. However, Caleb had just slapped his grandson in front of him, and looked completely unafraid!

"No manners, and noisy to boot," Caleb scoffed as he stepped forward to check Damian's pulse. John Warren, Damian's servant, moved swiftly to intercept him.

Caleb met John's wary gaze and said calmly, "Since I've answered the call, I will cure Mr. Turner Sr. I always keep my word."

Damian studied Caleb for a long moment, then relented. "Let him try."

John nodded, then stepped aside.

Under Simon's seething glare, Caleb placed his fingers on Damian's wrist, channeling his inner energy. One of the gifts bestowed upon him by the Divine Legacy was unparalleled medical skills, which was why he had confidently accepted Damian's request. His energy flowed through Damian's body, assessing the old man's condition with pinpoint accuracy.

"He's just putting on a damn show," Simon muttered under his breath, crossing his arms sulkily. "If he can't prove himself, I'll make sure he doesn't leave this place in one piece."

Finally, Caleb spoke, his voice calm but firm. "Mr. Turner Sr.'s condition isn't truly ALS—he's been poisoned."

The room fell silent.

Kayla's heart skipped a beat. "What?"

Simon burst into laughter. "Poisoned? Hah! You really are a fraud! There's no way Grandpa was poisoned. Grandpa, let me kill him already. He's just taking us all for fools!"

"Silence!" Damian's voice was commanding, and Simon shut his mouth. Damian stared at Caleb with newfound respect. Caleb was right—Damian had ALS because he had been poisoned. However, the information was top secret, and hardly anyone knew about it. Damian's voice was laced with tension as he asked Caleb, "Mr. Larkin, is there a cure?"

Caleb shook his head, his expression grim. "The poison has settled deep in your energy channels… No medicine can remove it."

A heavy silence filled the air, and Kayla and Damian looked downcast.

Caleb exhaled deeply and continued, "However, I can use acupuncture to clear the blockages in your energy channels, and I'll also prepare a special medicine to flush out the toxins. You won't be at your prime, but you'll be able to move freely. You'll have at least ten more years."

"Really?" Damian's eyes brightened.

Kayla leaned forward, her heart pounding in excitement. In his current state, Damian had expected no more than a painful year of paralysis before his nervous system started to deteriorate, and he became nothing more than a living corpse. He had already begun preparing for his death.

"That's nonsense! Grandpa, you can't seriously believe him! This must be one of Kayla's tricks!" Simon blustered, his temper getting the better of him.

"Get out," Damian ordered sharply.

Simon stiffened. "Grandpa, I—"

"Get. Out." Damian's tone was dangerous, the finality in his voice leaving no room for argument.

Simon clenched his fists furiously, shot Caleb a final glare, and reluctantly left.

Damian turned back to Caleb. "Mr. Larkin, if you can truly cure me, I will grant you anything you ask. As long as it is within the Turner family's power, we will not refuse you."

Caleb remained impassive. "When the time comes, I'll make my requests. For now, I will begin treatment. I'll come once every two weeks with a prescription for you."

He pulled a silver needle from his sleeve, its polished surface gleaming under the light. Slowly, he pressed it into Damian's acupoints, twisting it with expert precision. According to the Divine Legacy's teachings, this needle technique—when perfected—could even revive the dead. With such power, unblocking energy channels was mere child's play.

Moments later, Caleb withdrew the needle. The tip was dark—stained with the poison that had resided within Damian's body for so long.

"That's…!" Kayla inhaled sharply, no longer doubting Caleb.

Caleb carefully placed the needle back in his pouch, then scribbled a prescription on a piece of paper. He handed it to John and said calmly, "Follow the instructions on this prescription. Brew the medicine daily and give him one dose a day. It will help restore his mobility, after which he can begin circulating his own inner energy through his energy channels."

With that, Caleb stood and prepared to leave. Treating Damian had been a simple act for Caleb—something done almost on impulse. But now, he had more pressing matters to attend to.

"Kayla, see Mr. Larkin out. From now on, he's a guest of our family, so make sure he's treated accordingly," Damian ordered, his voice tinged with respect for Caleb.

"Understood, Grandpa." Kayla escorted Caleb out of Turner Estate.

She was about to say something when Caleb raised a hand, stopping her. "Here's fine, Ms. Turner. Also, don't worry—I'll come here on my own every week."

Kayla froze. Was she really so off-putting? So many men clamored for her attention, yet Caleb acted as if she were an inconvenience. A small huff escaped her lips, and she lifted her chin proudly. However, Caleb didn't even spare her a glance as he walked away.

After a while of walking, Caleb sighed softly. "Rachel, do you really want to divorce me?"

His heart clenched as he muttered under his breath, "Fine, if that's what you want. That way, when I die in three years, perhaps you won't be so heartbroken."

Three years.

"In these three years, I'll make the world bow before me. I'll build an empire so powerful that no one will dare to harm you. Those who wronged us will pay a price beyond their worst nightmares!"

Caleb's eyes burned with determination and a frightening intensity. It was as if, in that moment, he had become something inhuman.

She had defied her family and rejected every suitor just to be with him.Yet here they were. With the power of the Divine Legacy flowing through his veins, Caleb finally had the strength to protect the woman he loved most, but unfortunately, he didn't have much time left. The knife pierced Caleb's skin, sinking deep into his chest. Blood dripped from the wound, pooling on the cold floor beneath him. But Caleb remained calm. He met Brian's gaze and asked, almost casually, "Is this enough? Will you let my daughter go now?"Brian cackled, applauding mockingly. "Ah, fatherly love… It's so touching, I could cry! But no. It's not enough." His grin widened, eyes glittering cruelly. "Move the knife to the left… I want to see how far your devotion really goes. Do it—or your daughter walks away with a scar for life. I don't bluff, Caleb.""Daddy! I'm scared!" The little girl whimpered, squeezing her eyes shut.Caleb's voice softened, "It's okay, sweetheart. Daddy's right here. Keep your eyes closed—this is just a bad dream. It'll be over soon." Without hesitation, Caleb gripped the knife tighter and dragged it across his chest. Sabrina blinked up at him earnestly, not understanding what was going on between her parents."Daddy's been sleeping for three years, so there are a lot of things I need to take care of first. To Caleb's surprise, his injuries had healed completely—not even a single scar remained. He couldn't believe it! "The Divine Legacy is even stronger than I expected. What exactly is the Shadow Fiend I made a deal with?" Caleb muttered, still in disbelief.Suddenly, a shrill voice rang out. "Caleb, it really is you! I can't believe you're up and about!" A tall, heavily made-up woman sashayed toward Caleb, eyeing him with a sneer. "I heard you and Rachel got divorced. Guess you realized your limits. I told Rachel not to marry you from the start—and I was right. You couldn't make her happy!"Caleb raised an eyebrow but said nothing. The woman was Wendy Lane—Rachel's best friend. A notorious snob, she and Caleb had never gotten along. When Caleb didn't react, Wendy grew bolder. "You'd better stay away from Rachel. A woman like her can get any man she wants—I don't know why she waited three years for you. Now you're broke and useless. You don't deserve her. Did you hear me, Caleb?

They were just three simple words, yet they left Kayla reeling. She'd expected as much, but hearing Caleb admit it still shocked her.Heart pounding, Kayla hissed, "Are you trying to make an enemy out of Charles? He's not just some ordinary old man! Don't tell anyone else that you killed Brian." Caleb was being way too reckless!"I already told Charles I killed him. I also told him not to bury Brian," Caleb replied calmly.Kayla's jaw dropped. "What?!" She cleared her throat, trying to regain composure, and shot Caleb a sharp glare. "Charles is holding a funeral for Brian in three days. He's invited everyone in the city."Caleb took a leisurely sip of his drink, then remarked lightly, "Oh? Is Charles ignoring my warning… or challenging me?"A chill ran down Kayla's spine. "Caleb, what are you planning?" She asked urgently."I already warned Charles that Brian can't be buried. Since he's ignored me… I'll just have to make sure there's nothing left of him to bury." "What level of strength would you need to go up against the Northern Alliance?" Caleb asked with a smile."You need to be at least a Grandmaster," Kayla answered seriously, a touch of longing in her tone.Caleb narrowed his eyes. Three years ago, he had been at the peak of the Acquired stage, just shy of Primordial. A Primordial martial artist could rule a city; a Grandmaster could dominate a region. However, Grandmasters were nearly unheard of in Jadewood City. A single Grandmaster was as strong as an entire battalion, and to hire one would cost tens of millions. In this world, wealth could buy you power, but martial strength earned one respect."Are there Grandmasters in the Northern Alliance?" Caleb asked."I don't know," Kayla replied. "But Selena's grandfather hasn't been seen for years. Some say he passed away, but others claim he became a Grandmaster and extended his life." There was a hint of regret in Kayla's voice.
