At Laura's House

They were silent throughout their journey back. They got into the house that she likened to a dog house a few minutes ago and sat down. Her anguish increased when she compared it with the houses in the estate.

Nevertheless, Pa Dickson wished that it could be a dream and he would soon wake up to reality.

“I thought the birthday boy gave him a job? Why is he with the government?” Laura asked after she found her bearings.

To her despondency, her parents were lost in their different thoughts that they did not hear her.

After a long silence, her father drew a long breath and said, “This is strange. No wonder he has a handset.”

“Huh! Is that all you saw? Can't you see that he owns a car and a driver?”

“A military car at that,” Laura chipped in.

“That is true. I think he is the person in charge. Otherwise, he wouldn't have a driver.”
