The next day came around and for the first time since she officially became Luna, she detested getting out of bed. She always looked forward to fulfilling her duties for the day as it gave her a sense of purpose but this particular day all she felt was gloom and anger.
Regardless of how she was feeling, Megan got up from bed and rang for her ladies. Her duties were not going to fulfill themselves.
She needed to keep busy now more than ever since Aspen was moving to the castle as Richardsons official concubine.
She never thought that he would ever take a concubine.
Megan was 12 and Richardson was 15. They were lying on the lawn after completing their lessons for the day.
“Do you think you will ever take a concubine?” Megan asked, taking a bite out of her cookie. “The law allows it but what do you think?” She added.
“My dad never took a concubine. The thought of that will simply break my mother’s heart.” He said.
“Plus, I wouldn’t do that to you. One woman is enough for me, thank you.” He said in response. Megan smiled. She was the luckiest girl in the world to be betrothed to such a sensitive young man. She could talk to him about anything without a fear of being shunned.
The present
“It has to be baseless.” One of Megan’s ladies said as she entered the quarters.
“It definitely is.” The other said.
“What is baseless?” Megan asked, grabbing her robe and getting out of bed.
The two ladies looked at each other before one of them said, “There’s news that his majesty brought in a girl in the early hours of this morning.” One of them said.
“A girl?” Megan asked. “No one saw her face?” She added.
“No, your highness. It was very discreet but one of the servants saw this and reported it straight to me.”
“I’ve told you to stop having people snoop around in the castle. If caught you could get in trouble and I won’t be able to save you lady Rosetta.” Megan said.
“Would you please draw me a bath?” Megan asked.
“Of course, Luna.” The other lady said.
“My queen, aren’t you concerned by this rumor?” Lady Rosetta asked. Megan smiled, “Not sure. I’m sure if it concerns me his majesty will tell me.” She lied. She knew exactly who the lady was but decided not to disclose any information to one of her closest aides, Rosetta. She couldn’t bear to be the object of her pity.
Megan took a long bath and got dressed, ready for the day. She moved to the dining hall for breakfast, something she had been having alone for the past year.
Megan sat at the end of the long table and ate her meal quietly when Ronald, a beta and one of the castle’s butlers entered the room.
“There is a ruckus outside the castle, your highness.” Ronald started.
“Are we suddenly short of guards to handle chaos that you’ve come directly to me?” Megan asked, irritated.
“No, your highness. They’re demanding to see you. They are primarily the widows you support Luna.” Ronald said nervously.
“Oh. What is their request? I don’t see them till Friday.” Megan said. She had been supporting the widows in the clan since she assumed her position as Luna and queen and it was one of the projects she took great pride in.
“It’s the news all over town Luna. That his majesty is planning to divorce you because you cannot-” Ronald paused suddenly.
“Cannot what, Ronald?”
“Because you have not provided an heir. The women are concerned because of their status in the clan in the event of that happening.” Ronald said.
“Send them away. I will see them when I normally do, on Friday.” Megan said curtly.
“Okay, your highness.” He said and left the room.
A sour taste formed in Megan’s mouth and she no longer felt like eating.
Megan took a walk to the garden, carrying a bag of peanuts with her. She was hoping to see the little cub whom she had been feeding for the past few months.
Megan got to the garden and took a seat on the pavement, something her ladies hated. She liked to garden and get her hand muddy from the soil. It was something she derived great joy in.
It was what she was doing when she sighted a small cub under one of the bushes two months ago. Feeding the lost wolf cub had become part of her routine. She talked to it about all her concerns and feelings.
“What am I going to do, cub?” She asked, squatting down to its level crying. The cub cocked its head to the side, as though asking her “what?” Megan laughed.
“I don’t suppose you have an answer to my questions. You’re just a baby.” She pinched its cheek.
What Megan didn’t know was that the cub was actually Rhode Wales who had infiltrated the Jared castle two months ago on a mission to gain important information.
He had the power to shrink his wolf size to that of a newborn cub and no one except his best friend Brian knew of this. It was an ability the Wales pack had kept secret from the world all these years.
Rhode’s mission however was sidelined when he was stuck in a bush and rescued by the Jared pack’s Luna, Megan Brighton.
Megan confided in the little cub without knowing his true identity and Rhode got access to information about the Jared empire by just listening to her. However, he wasn’t returning just to gain information anymore, he looked forward to seeing Megan and eating her peanuts everyday and today, the Luna whom everyone feared and respected was crying in front of him.
“Richardson, that bastard.” Rhode thought as he put his paw on Megan, trying to comfort her.
Aspen had been living in the castle for three months now in the quarters designated for the king’s concubine. Megan never thought she’d see the day the room was occupied. She never stepped foot in the area and avoided Aspen like a plague. She also never saw Richardson except for official duties where they had to see dignitaries from other clans together.
That day, representatives from the Wales clan were coming to the castle. The Wales clan and the Jared clan never saw eye to eye. They only kept diplomatic relations at the surface level to prevent any conflict between them.
Megan was getting ready in her chambers when Brianna rushed in.
“Oh! Rhode Wales is a sight to behold!” She said as she fell dramatically on the couch.
“You’re betrothed to be married Brianna.” Megan said.
“Oh but your highness! You should see him!” Brianna gushed.
“I will.” She said with a smile. “As soon as you come help me get this corset fitted.” She added. Brianna rushed to her side to help Rosetta string the corset.
On days with unofficial duties, a simple dress was enough for Luna. However when they were to host dignitaries from other clans, she was required to dress like royalty, with steel boned corsets and multiple skirts. Megan hated it.
Her hair was rolled up and set in place with pins and she stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were sunken and her collar bone stuck out. She was sure that people would attribute her loss of weight to the spreading rumor.
Megan stepped out of the room, Rosetta and Brianna to her left and her right respectively. She met up with Richardson at the base of the steps and they walked up the steps together, Megan a few steps behind him.
As the couple sat on their throne, the heavily bearded man from the Wales clan announced. “Now presenting, the leader and alpha of the Wales clan, Empire Rhode Wales.”
A tall man with tanned skin walked into the room. He had black hair slicked back and was dressed in royal attire. Megan wasn’t aware that Wales also transitioned into an empire. She was too occupied with the affairs of her people.
She noticed his eyes which were an odd shade of deep purple and she had a sharp jawline and a well defined face, as though carved out from a perfect sculpture.
“Your majesty.” Rhode acknowledged Richardson.
“Luna.” He acknowledged Megan.
That was where she had seen those eyes before. The cub she fed every morning had the same deep purple eyes. Megan could not shake off the resemblance. There was no way the empire of the Wales clan who occupied the Western territories was a little helpless cub in her garden. It was physiologically and physically impossible. Right?
The meeting was adjourned in about an hour as it was only a customary visit. Rhode’s father, the former alpha and ruler of his empire, died of a disease that almost wiped out his entire family two years ago.Thankfully, Rhode was out on a mission and was not infected. Rhode assumed the role as alpha and in just a year he brought the Wales clan up the ladder and they were only second to the Jared kingdom in influence. In raw strength however, that was up for debate.Megan couldn’t shake off the feeling that she had seen Rhode before. He felt all too familiar and he looked at her often during the visit although she refused to look back at him. It was an insult to your husband as Luna to look at another male in the presence of your husband, especially one from another pack. After all the visitors had left, Megan got up to leave the courtroom.“It would do you well to have a group of reporters come see you.” Richardson said.“Why?” Megan asked. “Word has reached me that rumors have spread
“Hey!” Aspen said. Taking both the ladies attending to her and Megan’s entourage by surprise. Gasps were heard.“How dare you refer to the queen so informally!” Rosetta barked at Aspen.“I’m sorry, I’m so used to calling you informally.” Aspen said. “I haven’t seen you on castle grounds ever. It’s like you’re invisible Luna.” Aspen said with a small smile.Megan was still frozen, unsure of what to do or how to respond.“I just want to talk, Meg. Please.” Aspen pleaded.“Oh look! A little cub!” One of the women pointed. The cub ran to Megan’s feet.“Why is there a stray on castle grounds!” Brianna asked, turning around to find one of the guards.Megan was thankful for the distraction. She bent down and picked up the cub, “he’s not a stray.” She said and smiled.“You came to rescue me, didn’t you?” She whispered in the cub’s ear and it licked her hand.“Your highness! It could have some sort of disease!” Rosetta gasped.“Going to make me sick, baby?” She cooed at the cub, Aspen took the
Megan woke up earlier than usual to go to the garden. She hoped to see the little cub as she felt better whenever she held him in her arms. The sun wasn’t out yet and Megan was clear to the guards to not follow her into the garden. In a month’s time she will be divorced. She will no longer be queen or Luna and all she had lived for will be no more. She wasn’t even sure of her status in the castle after the divorce.“Do I return home?” Megan asked out loud. “The shame might be too much for my family.”“The former Luna returns home after a failed marriage due to her inability to provide an heir.” Megan laughed sadistically. If someone would have told her that her life would turn out this way at 27 she would have laughed in their face. “Where are you, cub?” She asked. “I should’ve named you.” She thought. At Least it would’ve been easier to call out to him.“Your highness!” She heard a male voice call from behind her.“I told you I want to be alone.” Megan said and turned around.“Forgi
Megan was taking a walk in the garden when she sighted rustling in a bush. “Maybe it’s my cub.” She thought to herself.“Brianna, Rosetta, you both can stay here.” She said and lifted up her thick skirt. She jogged over to the bush and squatted down. She peered open the branches with her hands and she saw the little cub.“Hi, you.” She moved to grab him when she noticed something like a scroll attached to a collar she hadn’t seen before.Did the cub have an owner all this while? She removed the scroll and opened it to reveal a small note. “Your kingdom is indeed beautiful ” The note read. Megan got up and scanned the area. She didn’t know who the note could’ve been from but the thought of it made her giddy inside.Someone wrote her a secret note and she wanted to meet this stranger but she didn’t know how.“Thank you. Does he have a name? If you’re a guest in the castle, you could join me for tea this afternoon.”Perhaps if she had tea this noon the stranger would come around. It ha
“I’ve discussed with the priest, he will see us tomorrow in a private meeting.” Richardson said.It was really happening. Richardson was divorcing her.Ten years ago“Do you think you would ever divorce me?” Megan asked. They were returning from their law class.“You always ask such ridiculous questions Megan.” Young Richardson said.“I’m just curious. It is allowed so, I was just wondering.”“You’re my mate.” He said plainly, looking her dead in the eyes.“I love you, Megan.” He added. Megan turned red.It was the first time he ever said that he loved her.Richardson laughed at her reaction.“I do love you, Megan. I can’t imagine a life without you so no, divorcing you will hurt me more than it will hurt you.” He said.Present“Okay.” Megan said numb.“Megan…” Richardson said. “You do understand right?”“Goodnight, your majesty.” She wasn’t going to show him any emotion. He didn’t deserve that.Megan left his office and headed for her quarters, it was already past the usual time she
Word traveled fast in the Jared mansion. The news was that Megan had slapped Richardson’s concubine who everyone now knew was Megan’s friend. The general perception was pity for the queen and disdain for the alpha. However a few people thought Megan was rude and ungrateful towards Aspen and Richardson.Megan however, was more worried about how the visitors from the west would take the rumor.“It’s the word around the castle.” One of Rhode’s aides said to Brian who reported directly to Rhode.“It seems that Luna is losing face amongst her own subjects. I almost feel sorry for her.” Brian said.Rhode felt indignant about the whole situation but there was nothing he could do to help Megan here. He felt all the more motivated to convince her to remarry him.His agenda for the day was simple, discuss with her about future collaborations between their clans. She needed her to see him as someone she could trust.Megan got out of bed and got ready for the day. She was wearing a lilac colored
The next morning, Rosetta and Brianna were drawing Megan’s bath when they heard a ruckus outside.“Is that Aspen, what is she doing in your quarters?”Brianna and Rosetta rushed out of the room.Aspen successfully swiped some gold jars from the hallway where Megan’s room was at.When the cleaners reported it missing, Aspen suggested that they searched everyone present. What Rosetta didn’t know was that Aspen had sent one of her maids to plant a piece of gold on Rosetta.During the search, one of the people searching found the gold on Rosetta.“That can’t be right! I’ve never touched anything in this hallway! I pass through it countless times a day.”“Yes! This is a mistake!” Brianna seconded.Everyone present was starting to murmur. Megan came out of her room, hearing the chaos.“What is the matter?” Everyone bowed. Aspen hated it.“Luna, some mini gold jars and trinkets are missing from the hall. Ms. Aspen suggested we do a search down of everyone who frequents the hallway and we fou
Megan left the garden, her mood now sour. The next morning, Rosetta was fixing pins in Megan’s hair when Richardson barged in.“What has gotten into you?!” He yelled.“Rosetta, please excuse us.”As soon as she left the room, “I don’t follow.” Megan said, looking at her reflection in the mirror.“What has gotten into you Megan?! Why are you so bitter towards Aspen?! You’ve changed!”Megan chuckled.“Changed, your majesty?”“Yes! I thought maybe last night would soften your mind but it seems it’s made up!”“I thought you would remain friends with Aspen!”“So you had sex with me because of Aspen.” Megan felt insulted.“Is it wrong? You have clearly been jealous.”“Why bother? What’s the point if I cannot get pregnant? You could have just kept ignoring my needs. I’ve been just fine.”“I see that now. I certainly regret it.” He spat and left the room.A tear slid down Megan’s face. That was probably the meanest thing he ever said to her. She hoped no one was eavesdropping.“Oh, your highn
“It’s delicious.” Megan said as she took her first bite out of the deliciously roasted venison.“It’s lamb.” Rhode said as he took a bite out of it.The two enjoyed a quiet lunch. Apparently, it was a rule that the king could not eat alone under any circumstance. There needed to be servers with a physician present in case there is a risk of food poisoning.Another thing that was very different from the East. After dinner, the couple walked back to Megan’s chambers. She didn’t show it but she was very glad that she didn’t have to continue with her little charade of being unemotional. She did it for years in the East but the thought of doing it again stressed her. She was grateful that she could be herself, whatever that meant and wasn’t quite ready to take on the role of the stoic queen. She didn’t show it but she was glad Rhode didn’t leave her to her thoughts and assumptions though he was late and she had already jumped into a million and one conclusions. When they entered her room,
Megan froze as he walked towards her, pulling her towards him. His hand rested gently above her waist and his other hand, supporting her neck. She was frozen in shock, at a loss for words. “I’m sorry.” Megan could not ignore the pounding of her heart. It felt like anyone within hearing distance could hear, she was sure Rhode heard it. She stuttered, and she never stuttered, “I don’t understand…, my king.” That did it. “Oh, for heaven’s sake, Megan. Don’t do that with me, not you. I’m not my king to you.” Rhode paused. “I’m Rhode. Just Rhode.” Rhode held her eyes, his deep purple eyes boring a hole into her eyes. She had never been in a stare down before but she was clearly losing. Megan kept quiet, unsure of what to say in response. She was not upset at him for anything he did or did not do but she did have a resolve until just now. And Megan never broke her resolve but a deep purple pair of eyes staring into her soul was making her reconsider her decisions. “Is it somethin
“Never, my lady…”“We would never think of such a thing.” Mary said to Mirabel, eyes filled with worry.Where was this suddenly coming from?Mirabel smiled, “I see. Let us go.”Mary and Lily both looked at themselves before following behind Mirabel. She was acting strangely but they knew to not ask questions. It was not their place to.In her room, Megan was actually surprised at the fact that she shed no tears despite the fact that she felt her heart physically shatter.Perhaps she cried out all her tears in the East.‘I did cry a lot.’ She thought to herself.
Mirabel? Who was this woman? Was he not going to introduce Megan? She stood beside Rhode while he and this unknown woman who looked very known to Rhode engaged in a staring competition with Rhode and he with her.Was this tension she felt?“My king.” The unknown woman curtsied and walked past her and Rhode.“Let us go.” Rhode said to her. Megan was greatly confused but masked her emotions. Was he not going to tell her who the lady was? Mirable, was it? She thought she heard him call her that.He continued pointing out different places to her but if she was being honest with herself, she heard nothing that he said.In fact, she was beginning to get pretty upset. She wasn’t asking for his entire history, she just wished he would tell her about people she would eventually see.Like that girl back at the inn and now this, Mirabel. She didn’t look like a nobody. She was dressed like a lady and had ladies with her.Did she live in the palace? She must since she was in the west quarters.M
Megan turned a very bright shade of red, “what?” She blurted out, flushed. He was flirting way more than usual lately.Rhode chuckled. He admitted to himself that he did things intentionally so he could see Megan turn a bright shade of pink. He loved watching the stoic Megan Brighton getting all flustered.“You always tease me.” She said, plopping down on her bed, pouting.“I’m not teasing, my queen. I did miss you.” Rhode said, taking a seat at her vanity, where he had sat earlier.“I know I’ve asked this before but, how are you? Do you like it here? Do you like your room?” He paused, “Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?”Megan smiled. He really was mindful of her.“You don’t have to worry so much about me, Rhode.” “I am very comfortable.” Megan paused, “Although, I can’t determine how things will be after the wedding.”“That is true. Nonetheless, I’m sure they would love you.” Rhode said, very sure.“They?” Megan asked, unsure of who he was referring to.“Your
Rhode never opened the letter because he had no plans on ever getting married and thought that the letter would be filled with advice he was never going to have any use for. However, after he decided on his mission to the East all those months ago, he started to think that maybe he would have use for the letter after all.His plan did involve wooing Megan Brighton but a part of him did not believe he would be able to pull it off. She was married to her mate after all.Who would have thought? He broke the seal and opened the letter, met face to face with his brother’s nostalgic handwriting. He had often gone back to reread the other letters, which were helpful tips on how to be king, not that he took most of the advice. He and Michael had different ways of doing everything. It was the thought that Michael put into writing them, despite how ill he must have been that warmed his heart.Michael knew that Rhode would find the box.I’m writing this last because knowing you, you would probab
Brianna did her best to hide the surprise she was sure was evident on her face, “sir Brian.” “Hello my lady, do you have a moment?” Brian asked her. She looked into the room to see Rosetta raising two thumbs to her, giving her the go ahead. “Okay.” Brianna breathed, closing the door behind her. The two walked down the hall and took a left turn down to the palace grounds. “I wanted to see you,” Brian started, “It troubled me that it seemed like we left on a bad foot earlier today.” “Oh.” Brianna said softly. She did not think he noticed. “Yes, I meant it when I said I would like us to be friends. I hate having misunderstandings.” Friends. That was the only word that rang in Brianna’s ears. Were they friends? “I understand Sir Brian. I did feel someway seeing you flinch at me but I now realize that you probably do not like it when people touch you. I should have asked before reaching for you.” Brianna said simply. For some reason she felt really flushed despite the fact that th
Richardson got up quickly from the floor which had been his bed since the day of the divorce. He unlocked the door and rushed outside. He was met face to face with Lord Anthony, his chief advisor. He thought there would at least be a few people at the door but it was just Lord Anthony. The one person he really did not want to see.“Your majesty…” Lord Anthony began. He always wore such a stern and strict look on his face. Richardson could swear that he had never seen him crack a smile. Voluntarily or involuntarily.“Good… day, Lord Anthony.” He said, unsure of what time it was.“I cannot believe I had to lie that something is wrong with the mother of your child to get you to leave your chambers, my king. It has been two d
The sound of Megan screaming was almost deafening. Rhode shut his eyes immediately, “I apologize!” He said, taking a step, then another backwards until he was out of the room. As he shut the door, he said “I promise, I did not see anything.”Inside the room, Megan was flushed. Truth was, she wasn’t undressed or improperly dressed. She was standing in front of her new vanity and taught to decorate her hair with what was left of the flowers. She had just started to realize how ridiculous it looked and was about to take them out when the door flew open. She looked at herself in the mirror, cupping her face, “did he really not see anything?”She sighed and reached for the first flower petal sticking out and laughed at herself. She never thought to do anything this silly when she
