The door creaked open and I instinctively stepped backward as my breath caught in my throat. In that room, for one second, there was only the soft echo of his boots against the stone floor.
As he stepped fully into view, my lungs ran out of air.
The Red Alpha was even more fearsome up close than my mind had pictured. His tall, towering physique spoke volumes about power; the green eyes felt like they were drilling right into me, holding me paralyzed with intensity. His face was chiseled, his features composed-smooth, like the lull before the storm.
I said nothing. My muscles were tight while I waited for him to say something.
He crossed the room, his hands clasped behind him, drinking in his surroundings. Finally, he faced me, the curl of his lip in a small, almost amused smile.
"You're quieter than I expected," he said with that voice all smooth and deceptively calm. "Good. I like my acquisitions to know their place."
I blinked to hear his words; his words dragged me from my stupor. "Acquisitions?" I said, shaking a little, the word mingling somewhere between confusion and indignation.
"Yes," he said simply, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. "You're mine now, Avery. For as long as you're here, you belong to me.”
I stared at him, my blood boiling as the truth of his words caught up with me. "I don't belong to you," I said, the words firm this time even though my hands were shaking at my sides. "I don't belong to anyone."
He chuckled, a low, mocking sound. "You misunderstand your position. You're in my territory, under my roof. That means you follow my rules.”
I took one step forward, anger boiling to the surface through all the fear clawing at my chest. "You think you can just take me-tear me away from my home, and expect me to obey you? You don't own me!"
In an instant, his smile vanished; his face was cold, hard. He leant in, uncomfortably close. "Your home?" he repeated, sharp. "The same home that couldn't protect you? The same father that stood by and let me take you?"
My heart twisted at the words, but I shoved the doubt aside. My father had tried to protect me. He just… couldn't.
"You don't know anything about me," I spat, my voice trembling.
"I know enough," he said, his eyes glinting. "I know you're here now. And if you're smart, you'll stop fighting and learn to obey."
The calm authority in his tone set my teeth on edge, fanning the fire of my anger.
"Obey?" I spat back, the second step. "You think I'm going to swallow all this and then just walk away? After raiding my pack, terrorizing my people, and tearing me from everything I've ever known?"
His jaw snapped shut, but he said nothing, his dead-on gaze holding mine.
"You're a monster," I said, still running on. "You destroy people's lives without a thought. Do you like it? Watching people suffer? Does that make you feel powerful?"
His lips twitched but not with humour. His green eyes darkened and the veneer of calm began to crack. "Careful," he said low and dangerous. "You start to test my patience."
"Good," I said, my voice rising. "Because I want you to hear this. I hate you. You're nothing but a bully, hiding behind your strength because you don't know how to be anything else."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Then, he moved.
Faster than I could react, he was in front of me, his hand wrapping around my throat and lifting me off the ground.
I gasped, my hands clawing at his wrist as a wave of panic crashed into my senses. His hold was like iron, closing off my air as he held me without an ounce of effort.
"You think you can insult me and get away with it?" he growled out-the tone guttural, thick with rage. "You think your hatred means anything to me?"
His eyes were no longer human; some unnatural, feral light shone out of them, and contorting his face was a snarl that sent my blood cold.
"You have no idea what true power is," he snarled on, each word louder. "But you will."
I struggled against him, kicking and scratching, but it was futile. His strength smothered me, and the unbridled energy that came off him-made concentration impossible.
"Let me go!" I choked, my voice little louder than a whisper.
For a moment, I thought he wouldn't. His grip tightened, his growl deepening as his body shook with barely restrained violence.
Then, something shifted.
His eyes flickered, the feral light dimming as he stumbled backward, releasing me so abruptly that I fell to the floor.
I coughed and gagged, my throat burning, scuttling backward away from him until my back hit the cold stone wall.
He in turn doubled over onto himself clutching his head as if in agony muttering something to himself. His body began to shake all over; his fists clutched and unclenched as though he were fighting some invisible force.
He should have looked triumphant, wild and out of control like that. But a surge of fear was all that flooded my being.
This wasn't a man. This was a beast, a creature barely tethered to reason.
At last, he straightened, his breathing heavy, his eyes cold once more.
"Defy me again," he said, his voice low, a threat. "And you'll regret it."
I opened my mouth to answer him, but nothing came out. My throat was sore from his clutches, and utter terror about what had just happened had rendered me mute.
Without another word, he turned and stormed from the room, slamming the door behind him. The echo this propelled into the silence was deafening and threw me into being utterly alone with my thoughts and the massed weight of his presence.
I wrapped my arms around my knees, shaking as the adrenaline ebbed and the weight of my predicament settled in.
I lay at the mercy of a man, little more monster than human, who could take me out with one blow.
And no one was coming for me.
(Alpha Red Pov)I stormed from her room, my breathing heavy as I slammed the door behind me. The sound reverberated down the dimly lit hall, but it did little to calm the roaring chaos inside of me. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, the nails biting into my palms. Her face had seared itself into my mind, those wide grey eyes, flashing defiance and raw fear. It was that look that had triggered something deadly inside me. I had gone into her room cool, calm, prepared to outline the do's and don'ts for this beauty and put her straight regarding her place in the scheme of things. Yet she'd resisted. She had pushed and goaded until the monster inside me broke free once more.I wasn't sure if it was her words or the defiant stare that followed, but something about her unraveled me.I quickened my pace as my boots smashed against the stone floor down the corridor to my chambers. The wolf inside me stirred violently; its rage pounded against my skull."Alpha, is everything—A servant
The pale morning light seeped through the narrow window, but it offered little comfort. My body felt so heavy, as if I was slowly sinking into the thin mattress that supported me. All my muscles ached, and my head pounded away with a dull, ceaseless pain.I shifted uncomfortably, but the movement sent a sharp jolt through the back of my skull. Gritting my teeth, I reached back and felt the swelling just above my nape. Must have happened when he threw me down after releasing me last night-my head must have struck the stone wall. The memory of his glowing red eyes flashed in my mind, and I shivered.Alpha Red.His name was enough to send shivers of fear and hatred down my spine. My throat still burns from where his hand had clutched me, and my mind replayed that one moment over and over. The sheer rage in his eyes, the monstrous strength in his grip-it was unlike anything I'd ever seen.I closed my eyes and willed it away, but my mind strayed to my mother instead. My chest constricted a
Avery's POV Gaius looked down immediately and I wondered if perhaps he was speechless or just didn't feel the need to reply to me. Either way, I knew my opinion of Alpha red was not wrong. He had shown me his true nature. A beast and a selfish monster that took pleasure in inflicting pain to me and before I could stop my thoughts from remembering my encounter with him yesterday, I saw those green orbs staring down at me like I was nothing but an insignificant piece. My heart was racing like a runaway train, my breath catching in my throat as I thought about Alpha Red's hands closing around my neck like a vice. I could still feel the pressure, the weight of his fingers digging into my skin, squeezing the life out of me. The memory was etched into my mind like a scar, a constant reminder of the terror I had faced. As I sat in the dimly lit room, I couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that had been building up inside me. What if he comes for me again? What if he tries to hurt me aga
Avery's POV I slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings. I was back in my room, lying on the comfortable bed. But as I looked around, I realized that I wasn't alone. A little girl's face was hovering over mine, her eyes fixed on me with a mixture of sadness and curiosity.I sat up slowly, staring at the little girl in confusion. She couldn't have been more than 10 or 11 years old, with a mop of curly brown hair and a smattering of freckles across her nose. She looked up at me with big, brown eyes, her expression solemn.Just then, Gaius stepped into the room, a look of concern on his face. "Avery, how are you feeling?" he asked, his voice soft and gentle.I rubbed my head, trying to remember what had happened. "I...I think I'm okay," I said, my voice a little shaky. "What happened?"Gaius smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You were accidentally bumped into by our little Anna here," he explained, nodding towards the little girl. "She was running and didn't see
Avery's POV I stepped into the palace grounds, my heart sinking with every step. I had been dreading this moment for what felt like an eternity, and now that it was finally here, I couldn't help but tremble with fear.As I made my way through the familiar halls, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of my stomach. I had thought that I had escaped this place, that I had left its horrors behind me. But now, as I stood outside the door to my new room, I realized that I was back where I started.I pushed open the door and stepped inside, my eyes scanning the room with a sense of trepidation. It was smaller than my old room, with plain white walls and a single window that looked out onto the palace gardens. But it was the bed that caught my attention. My stomach lurched, and I felt like gagging in disgust.I felt a wave of fear wash over me as I approached the bed, my heart racing with every step. I had thought that I was safe, that I had escaped the palace and it
Alpha Red’s POV I closed my eyes, trying to fight the beast that was rising inside me. I could feel it on the edge, it hot breathed on the back of my neck, its claws digging into my skin. I was a master of control, but Avery's words were like a spark to dry tinder, igniting a fire that threatened to consume me.I could feel my Lycan wolf stirring, its power coursing through my veins like liquid fire. I didn't want to hurt Avery again, but I feared that my wolf would take over, that I would lose myself to its primal fury.Just when I thought I had quieted the beast, Avery's voice cut through the air, her words like a slap to my face. “You're nothing but a beast who hurts people for pleasure,” she spat, her eyes flashing with defiance. “I'm sorry for those who see you as a hero because they have no idea about the beast you really are.”Her words were like a punch to the gut, leaving me breathless and reeling. I felt my wolf surge forward, its anger and outrage boiling over like a pot l
Avery's POV “Damn it!” My body trembled with fear, my body still reeling from the shock of Alpha Red's sudden departure. Although I was scared, I was also relieved that he had left my room. My heart was still pounding in my chest, and I could feel the heat of his touch lingering on my skin.I couldn't shake the memory of his lips on my neck, the way his breath had sent shivers down my spine. And the way he had touched me between my legs… I felt a wave of disgust wash over me, but at the same time, my body seemed to be on fire.I couldn't understand why I was feeling this way. I should be horrified, repulsed by what had just happened. But instead, I felt…aroused. It was as if my body had betrayed me, responding to Alpha Red's touch in a way that I couldn't control.I felt a wave of shame wash over me, and I buried my face in my hands, trying to process what had just happened. Why had Alpha Red stopped? Why had he left me alone? And why was my body still responding to his touch, even t
Avery's POV I moved cautiously towards Alpha Red, my mind still reeling from the sudden change in his behavior. I sat down on his lap, trying to process what was happening. He wrapped a protective arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him.My heart skipped a beat as I felt his warmth and strength envelop me. I was still alarmed by the sudden change in his personality, and I wondered if he was just messing with me. But as I looked up at him, I saw something in his eyes that gave me pause.“What are you doing?” I asked him, trying to keep my voice steady.Alpha Red looked at me with an innocent expression, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “I'm holding you,” he said, his voice low and gentle. “Does it bother you?”I felt a flutter in my chest as I looked at him. There was something about the way he was holding me, something about the way he was looking at me, that made me feel… safe. It was a strange and unfamiliar feeling, and it left me feeling unbalanced because the last thing
Alpha Red's POV I pulled Avery into my embrace, holding her close as I reassured her that I'd come back to her. "No one can eliminate the notorious Alpha Red," I joked, trying to lighten the mood. "They know better than to attack me."Avery shook her head at me, a small smile on her face despite the tears still welling up in her eyes. I placed a soft kiss on her lips, trying to comfort her, before gently wiping away her tears.I felt a pang of guilt for making her cry, but I understood that her connection with her mother had been strong, and her death must have devastated her. I didn't want her to cry, and I wished I could kiss her worries away, but I knew that was impossible. All I could do was make sure I returned home to her in the next two days. I held her close, feeling a sense of determination wash over me. I would do everything in my power to come back to her, to make sure she was safe and happy. She was my mate, and I would do anything to protect her.I followed the maid to t
Avery's POV I woke up with a start, my heart racing with fear that Alpha Red had left me again, just like he always did. But as I sat up and looked around, my eyes landed on him, lying beside me, still fast asleep. I let out a sigh of relief, feeling a mix of emotions. I was happy to see him, but I knew he was leaving today to go to the other pack, and I wouldn't see him again for two days.I carefully moved closer to him, not wanting to wake him up. I smiled as I took in his sheer beauty. His jawline and cheekbones were sharp, giving him a deadly and captivating look that not only terrified people but also hypnotized them. I remembered being spellbound by his looks the first day we met, but my feelings were torn when he hurt me.Now, I don't know how to describe my feelings for him. They were complex, a mix of fear, respect, and... something more. I looked at him, taking in the strong lines of his face, the sharp angles of his features. He was a powerful and intimidating figure, but
Avery's povAlpha Red nodded, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Don't worry, Avery," he said. "I have a plan."I was taken aback, my curiosity piqued. "What is it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.Alpha Red's smile grew wider. "I'm going to go undercover," he said. "That way, no one will know who I am."I stared at him, my eyes wide with shock. "Is that truly wise?" I asked, my voice laced with concern. "You're well-known amongst all the packs. Everyone knows who Alpha Red is."Alpha Red chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Although everyone knows me as the notorious Alpha Red," he said, "not everyone has had the chance to physically meet me. And that's all thanks to my introverted self."I raised an eyebrow, surprised by his words. I had never thought about it that way. Alpha Red was indeed a private person, and he rarely attended social gatherings or meetings with other packs. It was possible that not everyone knew what he looked like.I sighed, feeling a sen
Avery's POV I sat around the dining table, sipping my tea and listening intently as my grandfather explained the situation. The clan members were growing restless, demanding that we find the cause of the deaths and report back to them soon. The next council meeting was looming, and the pressure was mounting. My grandfather had already spoken to the elders, explaining that we needed time to investigate and gather evidence before we could bring forth a conclusive report. But he feared that the council might still insist on hearing something, anything, about our progress. My grandfather's expression was serious, his eyes lined with concern. "The clan members are getting impatient," he said. "They want answers, and they want them now."I knew that we were doing everything we could to investigate the deaths, but it was clear that the clan members were not satisfied with our progress.Alpha Red spoke up, his voice thoughtful. "Is there anywhere we can bring in even just a snippet of our fi
Avery's POV My grandfather's expression softened as he listened to my words, his eyes filled with a deep understanding and compassion. He nodded slowly, his hands still holding mine."I know it's hard, Avery," he said, his voice gentle. "But you have to remember that you are not alone. You have me, and you have Alpha Red. We believe in you, and we want you to stay here with us."He paused, his eyes searching mine. "I know it's not easy to trust others, especially when you've been hurt before. But I want you to know that I'm here for you, no matter what. And I'll do everything in my power to help you prove yourself to others."I felt a lump form in my throat as I looked at my grandfather, his words touching a deep chord within me. I knew that I still had a long way to go, but with his support, I felt a sense of hope that I hadn't felt in a long time."But I'm tired of always looking over my shoulder or praying and hoping to be loved like I deserve. I've done so much but I still feel l
Avery's POV I looked at Alpha Red, my mind racing with questions and concerns. "What are you planning on doing next?" I asked him, my voice barely above a whisper. He hesitated, his eyes narrowing as he considered his response. "I'm not entirely certain," he admitted, "but I have a strong feeling that the food is somehow related to the deaths. We need to be sure before we conclude anything, though."I nodded, my thoughts already racing ahead to the implications of his words. If the food was indeed the problem, it would mean that the entire community could be at risk. I felt a shiver run down my spine at the thought."What's your next step, then?" I asked Alpha Red, my curiosity getting the better of me.He stood up, his movements decisive. "I'll need to check the food supplies," he said. "See if I can find any common thread or contaminant that could be causing the deaths."I nodded, my mind already turning over the possibilities. If Alpha Red was right, we could be facing a much bigg
Avery's POV As we left the woman's house, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. There were too many unanswered questions, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right.Once we were outside, I finally asked the question that had been bothering me. "Alpha Red, what are you thinking?" I asked, looking up at him with curious eyes.He frowned, his brow furrowed in thought. "It's possible that the boy had a heart attack," he said. "His father died of a heart attack, after all. It could be a genetic condition."I nodded, understanding his line of thinking. But I also pointed out the inconsistencies in the woman's story. "But his mother said he wasn't having any medical or emotional issues that could have led to distress," I said. "She made it sound like he was perfectly healthy, and then he just... died."Alpha Red's expression turned thoughtful, and he nodded slowly. "You're right," he said. "There's definitely more to this story than meets the eye.""But there
Avery's POV I turned to my grandfather, asking him what we should do to address the issue. But he just shook his head, his expression grim. "We only have one option, Avery," he said. "We need to find out what's happening and what's killing our clan members."I sighed, nodding my head in understanding. It wasn't going to be an easy task, but we had to try. I turned to look at Alpha Red, but he was no longer standing beside me. I felt a pang of confusion and curiosity. Where had he gone?I excused myself from my grandfather and left the room, searching for Alpha Red. I walked outside, scanning the area until I spotted him talking to a guard. I approached him, asking, "What are you up to?"Alpha Red turned to me, his expression serious. But before he could respond, the guard nodded at me and took off, leaving us alone. I raised an eyebrow, wondering what was going on.Alpha Red's eyes locked onto mine, his expression intense. "We need to find out what's happening, Avery," he said, his v
Avery's POV I placed my hand on Alpha Red's chest, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my palm. I looked up at him, my eyes searching for answers. "Are you going to let me play my part in the investigation?" I asked, my voice firm.Alpha Red's expression softened, and he covered my hand with his own. "I have no desire to keep you in the dark during the investigation, Avery," he said, his voice sincere. "I meant everything I said. I wish you'd trust me."His eyes pleaded with me, and I felt a pang of guilt for not trusting him sooner. "I don't know what to do to earn your trust," he continued, his voice filled with emotion. "I'm trying my best to make sure you stay in the clan. I hate it when the clan members say those hurtful words to you in front of me."My heart skipped a beat as he took a step closer to me, his eyes burning with intensity. "I love you, Avery," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I love you, and I don't want to lose you."****Alpha Red's POV As I stood th
