The walk back was less tense but Rae still sensed that there was something dark about the way Negan looked at her.

She didn’t know if her quick thinking had been enough. She couldn’t say that she wasn’t proud of the lies she managed to come up with in the last minute. Sure, she implicated Keegan, but that was exactly what he told her to do to save herself. But somehow, that wasn’t enough for him.

Of course, he had the right to be suspicious. She was conspiring against him and working with Keegan on the low. She believed in Keegan’s story despite his convincing lies and knew what Keegan would do to him as soon as the opportunity arose. She was the worst kind of betrayer, the one that as close to him as a shadow. He confided in her about his pain and she felt no real sympathy but acted as if she felt his pain. Or maybe she did. She would only be able to answer the question once she was a safe distance away from him. She couldn’t tell at the moment. She was lying to him (and to herself

Rae was right. She didn't sleep a wink even though her body was crying out for rest. The long walk paired with the late dinner exhausted her physically, but how could she sleep when she knew that the male was in the house, somewhere beneath her in a cellar, perhaps being tortured as she twisted and turned in bed by Negan for information on Keegan. She was concerned for many reasons; firstly, she couldn’t be sure if he knew about Keegan’s whereabouts or not. She didn’t know where Negan had found him. Chances were that he did, because Keegan seemed to trust him. He was the hunter, after all, the one who gathered the extra meat for her to eat. He also entrusted him with her, and since she knew Keegan well, that meant something. Also, the male knew that there was something between them. He knew Keegan left without her because he wanted her to be protected. He also knew that she followed him because she couldn’t fathom the thought of not being with him while he fought with StonePaw. Rae hadn't stopped thinking about the male. He had helped her. He had even saved her life once. She couldn't not think about him and how unfair it was that Negan's wolves could just grab him and drag him here to torture and question. She didn't accept that in her heart, even if the roles were reversed. But, of course, the only reason why she had given him a thought was because she knew him. Although she didn’t attach much importance to him before, she could not forget that if he hadn’t intervened that day in the woods, she would be perhaps dead or scarred for life. So now that he was in the same position as her, how could she do nothing? It was unfair that everyone who supported Keegan was abandoning a fellow friend who was considered Keegan’s Beta. If Keegan considered him a Beta, it meant that he was entirely trustworthy. He hadn’t even told Rae that before bug perhaps things were different now. She hadn’t seen him in a ridiculously long time. So much had changed, she imagined. Bu

  • The Rejected Luna   Chapter Sixty-Four

Rae stood in the middle of the living room for the longest time. She didn't know what to do. She felt lost, mentally and physically. Alone. She was now alone in StonePaw. She had no allies, no one who was associated with Keegan. Nothing. All she had was fear and a sense of impending doom. She knew she couldn't stand in the middle of the living room forever. She couldn't be associated with the escape. But what would she do now? She could try to follow them. She opened the door and peered outside. There wasn't anyone around. She had a good chance of escaping even though she didn't know where everyone was headed. If she was lucky, she could find someone along the way. She was about to take a step when a voice said behind her, "Are you going somewhere, Rae?"It was Negan. She tried not to panic but it was impossible. She looked at him over her shoulder. He had a frown between his brows and his lips were pressed together. He looked genuinely confused. "I was going outside for some fres

Negan slumped to the floor. Rae fell beside him and clutched her throat as she tried to catch her breath. Her neck hurt badly. She gulped in deep breaths of air but even that didn't feel enough. She glanced at him and saw that he was still thankfully unconscious. She didn't have much time left. She didn't know when he would wake up. She stood up on shaky legs and stepped over his body. She could've sworn that she felt his hand close around her ankle but when she looked down, she saw that his arm was firmly on the ground at a strange angle. To her dismay, she saw something else. Something that scared her more than anything else. There was a small pool of blood around his head. It was as dark as the midnight sky. She stepped back quickly and pressed herself against the wall. She had killed him. She killed Negan of StonePaw. The few seconds that she spent staring at him in shock felt like minutes. She had to go. Killing an Alpha was punishable by death. Considering she was a rogue

Rae didn't find any sign of life whatsoever and she had been on the road for a little over a day. She was exhausted but the reason why she didn't rest wasn't because she thought that she was being followed. It was because she had to keep going so she could find food and water. The last time she drank water was early in the morning and she hadn't even had lunch at StonePaw the day before. She was starving and exhausted, and what was worse was that she didn't have any prospects. There was no indication that rain would fall or that any animal, even a rat, would cross her path. If she stopped, she'd die either of hunger or thirst. Getting used to her new nose was fascination but scary. She could smell everything quite well, even the grass had a strong scent, so she knew if she couldn't smell an animal it meant that there wasn't any prey nearby. When Keegan told her that hunting was getting increasingly difficult, she didn't attach too much importance to it. Now she knew what he truly

Rae gathered a few things while watching the pack house. Firstly, the wolves who inhabited the area weren’t at all friendly. Their punishments were rigorous and they treated their employees as beneath them. There were always working people within packs but where she was from, they were treated with respect. What she saw was unacceptable. The employees all ate outside, for starters. And they slept outside. They rarely shifted so Rae was safe. They wouldn’t be able to pick up her scent, not from so far away. There weren’t a lot of pups in the pack either. There were only a handful of them which she assumed were the employees’ kin. She never saw the Alpha or Luna or anyone who could he related to them. The only ones she saw were the enforcers, and they were the ones who punished the staff for simply mistakes, something as simple as burning dinner. She was hesitant. She didn’t want to join them but at the same time, she knew that she was running out of options. She had only eaten two

Rae was escorted inside. The maid was kind enough to give her a cloth so she could wrap it around her aching body but she needed help getting in. She tried not to meet anyone’s gaze as she walked barefoot through the kitchen that was nothing like the one she had seen in StonePaw. The floor had no tiles, only cement. Nothing was organized either. The plates were just one the counters and some piles lined the floor because it didn’t have cupboards. It was strange to her but she understood that some packs didn’t have access to the human world and this pack seemed to be one of them. Everyone she walked past was eyeing her oddly, so oddly that she felt she had made a mistake. But she felt weak and couldn’t move on without help so she pushed her worries aside and allowed the two males to carry her inside. Presumably toward the Alpha’s office. Only, it wasn’t an office. Not like the ones she had seen in the other packs. There were no shelves with books, and the desk wasn’t necessarily the

  • The Rejected Luna   Chapter Sixty-Nine

When Rae awoke, the room was dark. She sat up in a panic and looked around. There was someone standing by the door—a female—and she was holding a candle. Her hair was done and she was wearing what appeared to be a long night dress. Rae could see the outline of her body through it. It was that thin. She had a pretty face but her expression was hardened. She also had a scar on her lip but it didn't diminish her beauty. Her skin was fair and her hair was as black as midnight. Her eyes also appeared to be dark. She put a hand up and said, "Worry not. The Alpha allowed you to rest. You aren't in any trouble."Rae visibly relaxed but her heart was still beating fast. The female placed the candle upon the metal bowl and then turned to her. "You shouldn't have slept in your work clothes. It'll be wrinkled tomorrow. The Alpha expects tidiness around here. A wrinkle in your clothes is enough to get you whipped around here."Rae panicked and immediately started taking her clothes off. She grab

Rae awoke in a light room. She felt the area around her with the tips of her fingers. She could move her hand. Linen. A soft mattress. A sheet covered her body. She was in a bed. She instantly relaxed, and fell asleep for a few minutes again before trying again. There was the scent of bleach in the air. She knew that scent well, it was a detergent that her mother loved to use. Thinking about her now meant nothing to her. She didn’t feel pain. Her absence from her life did nothing for her. The wolf who made her heart ache was her father and him alone. He had been kind to her, and she wished that they had parted ways on better terms. Rae would never see anyone from her family again. It was strange to think about, but it was the truth. Trying to figure out where she was wasn’t easy. There were two options. Rather, there was only one probable one, but she would include the unrealistic one in her possibilities. One, was that she was at StonePaw. Where else would Keegan have taken her, i

Rae searched the grassy field for something. Anything that she could use as a weapon. There was something glittering in the dark, and upon inspection, she discovered that it was a thick shard of glass. She picked it up. Nobody paid any attention to her. Everyone was engrossed in their own fight. She saw Negan and Keegan tumbling around in the dirt. They were still in their wolf forms. She held the glass tightly, but not sharply enough to cut her hand. Any extra injuries wouldn’t be doing her any favors. She neared them. Neither of them noticed her, and she began to fear that they wouldn’t. She stopped a safe distance away from him. She thought of calling Keegan’s name, but that would distract him and give Negan the advantage. So she held her breath and called out, “Negan!”He turned his head to her sharply. Keegan did the same. The point of this was to give Keegan the advantage, but he didn’t take it. Her guess was that he was too shocked at seeing her. Now that she had his attent

How would Rae get there? It was all that she was asking herself. She began walking. She didn't know where she was going. All she knew was that she couldn't stop and do nothing. Waiting for him to return was not an option. She was the one who was enraged now. How could he? How could he abandon her again, without a word? How could he make such a big decision without her?Rae felt hurt and betrayed, but she had to remind herself that Keegan wasn't himself. She had never seen him lose so much control. He was a shadow of his former self, and she knew that he would only go back to what he was once he killed his brother. But that was the whole problem. Fighting Negan was not a piece of cake. His pack was strong, and although Keegan's group had been reinforced by the males from WoodFur, they were all injured. The ones who weren't were very few. They would not stand a chance against StonePaw. So, why did he leave? Rae was walking around without any sense of direction. She was walking away

Smoke was everywhere. Rae sniffed her arm, and could smell it on her skin. It was rancid, and a constant reminder of what had happened. The house was black, and everything inside of it had burned. Nothing could be salvaged, and they lost most of their food. It was kept in a small room under the stairs, and had burned along with everything else. Three lives were lost, two of Keegan’s males, and the female who had been whipped by the cruel Beta of WoodFur before Keegan showed up. She couldn’t outrun the flames, it seemed. She had been in bed rest for the whole week. Rae’s heart ached for her, and when she heard of her passing, she cried. The unfairness of it all was too bitter. A lot of wolves were injured, and Rae along with Tara, all of the females, and some of the males who knew how to clean and disinfect wounds, had their hands full. She had never wrapped a wound before, so she was learning along the way. Tara taught her the basics, but it was far from enough. Watching their fac

They lied awake, staring at the ceiling of their bedroom. Rae was beyond spent. Her body ached deliciously, and the sleep that hovered above her threatened to drag her under its murky waters at any moment. Her fingers were interlocked with Keegan's. The warmth in them was unimaginable. He emanated enough heat to keep her warm. It was almost as if he was feverish all of the time. The night was lovely and breezy. Rae couldn't have imagined a better evening to be mated to him. It was the coolest night in the whole of summer. The moon had decided to bless their union in the most surprising way. She glanced at Keegan and saw that he turned to look at her at the same time. His lips curved into a smile, and he turned his body so he was lying on his side, and closed the distance between them. His fingers were on her hips. "Are you okay?""I'm perfectly okay," she said, smiling. "I didn't think that I could be this happy. In the beginning of this week, things were so grim and hopeless. I n

The after-ceremony was more entertaining than Rae thought possible. The food was amazing, and everyone ate and danced merrily. Rae was glued to Keegan's side, and nothing could tear them apart. Everyone in the pack congratulated them, including Keegan's Beta, whose name she had finally learned; Jace. How had she forgotten? When she told Keegan that she had completely forgotten his name, he laughed. "Don't worry about it," he said, and kissed her full on the lips. "I don't think he minds. He's a practical wolf."Rae couldn't have asked for anything better. She was truly content. The evening was better than she thought it would be, and all her nervousness left her. She felt totally at ease amongst everyone. She ate and drank a little, mostly because she was nervous for what would happen after the after. And the way Keegan looked at her was a confirmation to her that he was thinking about the same thing. She felt hot all over, and trembled occasionally. Now that she had a taste of wha

The day of their mating finally arrived. Rae was dressed in the fine dress that Tara had remedied. It had belonged to the Luna of WoodFur, and now it was hers. The design was a little different than the usual ones—the bodice was tight-fitting, and there was a slit on the side of the skirt so she could move freely. The sleeves had been ditched because the days were getting increasingly hot, and overall, Rae was absolutely in love with it. "Thank you," she said to Tara. "I can't take you enough for making this beautiful design for me. I look...I don't think I've ever looked this beautiful.""The pleasure is all mine," she replied with a smile. "You've saved us all from a miserable end. For that, I will always be thankful. You and Alpha Keegan saved our lives."Rae blushed. "It was our pleasure."Tara took her hand in hers and they stared at each other’s faces for a full minute. Rae felt truly grateful for her help. She was the one who she and Keegan put in charge of the house’s affair

Rae slept for the better part of the day. She woke up feeling exhausted yet refreshed. Her muscles hurt, but it was a good like of pain, especially because she knew why they hurt so much. There was a smile plastered onto her face, and she couldn't stop smiling no matter how silly she felt. Last night was a marvelous experience, and she was thankful that he gave her a taste of what their mated life would look like. She was ready for the big commitment. It wasn't just that he made her feel good, it also had to do with the way she felt about Keegan excluding everything that they had done. To know that they could make love like that was a bonus. She hadn't expected that when she first fell in love with him. She wanted to make love with him every single day. She was excited for it to happen. And it was funny how she never craved sex before, but now that she had an idea of what it was, she wanted to do it again. Right before breakfast. It was insane, and she could hardly recognize hersel

The two of them had dinner inside their tent, and Rae ate well for the first time in a long time. Everything was delicious; she ate as if her life depended on it, and perhaps it did. For the most part, Keegan watched her, and he did so with a faint smile on his lips. “Good?” he asked. She nodded. “For you, only the best,” he said, and she blushed. “The cooks here are spectacular. They had months of food kept all over the place. A cruel folk, they were. Starving all of you for their benefit. The injustice makes my blood boil.”“It’s over now,” Rae said to him after she swallowed her mouthful of wine. “You’re here to make everything right. You’ve saved them all.”Keegan smiled, then leaned in for a kiss. Rae felt delighted. She had forgotten the argument they had about StonePaw, and chose to live in the moment. There was no use in stressing about something that hadn’t happened yet. She was only shortening the beautiful moments, and tainting them with her worries and despair. She had
