Despite their efforts to get her to talk, Rae didn't say another word to her parents.

She didn't regret her decision and was certain that she never would. She didn't care that it looked bad on their part. She wasn't going to act as if what they did didn't hurt her and remain in the pack. She would rather be a rogue than be a laughing stock. Kara and Negan could look bad. In fact, they could die for all she cared.

Rae sat beside the window until the sun went up. She didn't feel tired, only emotionally drained. She tried not to think about how excited she was only a day before. She thought she would mate with the man she loved and live happily ever after but it seemed life had other plans for her. Or perhaps there was no plan. Perhaps she was destined to live an unremarkable life deep in the woods. She would find an empty cabin and inhabit it and forever be the rejected Luna.

She didn't care. All she wanted was to leave.

She hadn't decided what to take with her on her journey. Taking nothing seemed like the best option because she didn't want any reminder of BloodMoon but she had to agree that it wasn't necessarily practical. She couldn't venture out into the wide world without some resources. But even so, food and water could only last her a few days. And clothes she wouldn't necessarily need if she had to shift to hunt. There was also the possibility that she would be chased by a group of other rogues or other fierce animals and she'd have to abandon everything when she shifted.

Human hunters were also a problem.

Still, she had to find a solution and she had to do it quickly. She wanted to be gone before the day ended. She got up and showered simply because it was something she always did. She reminded herself that out in the wild she wouldn't be able to take showers and her resolve weakened, she couldn't lie. She began thinking of everything that would be limited to her and she found it all unfair.

Kara and Negan found their happiness together but ruined her life. It wasn't fair. She would live happily as a Luna and have her pups while Rae would waste away in BloodMoon if she chose to stay. She couldn't see who else would want her after what happened. She'd have to mate within the pack if no other suitable match was made and every male in their pack repulsed her. If they chose to mate with her, it would be because of their future position as Alpha since she was the Alpha's daughter. In any case, there wasn't one male that she found agreeable, not one.

And she wasn't willing to mate with someone she couldn't love.

Rae got out of the shower and dressed. She was just starting to pack a bag when her mother entered her room. She acted as if she didn't see her and put a few shirts into her bag.

"Rae," her mother said, "stop this foolishness!"

"I don't know how you can walk in here and say something like that to me," she replied, glaring at her. "After everything you've done you feel the need to tell me what to do?"

"You heard your father," she said, "we had no control over what happened. Your sister and Negan fell in love."

"I'm sure you convinced her to fall in love with him," she said angrily, not looking at her. "I didn't want to say it in front of father but I know you're the one who told her to pursue Negan. I'm not excusing what you did, I'm only telling the truth. Do you deny it?"

She raised her chin. "No, I do not. I'll repeat what I said last night; it was for the well-being of the pack."

"How embarrassing," Rae hissed. "How shameful of you. How desperate. You convinced your daughter to lie with a man who wasn't her mate for your benefit? I've never seen anyone sink lower than that."

Her mother advanced but Rae put a hand up. "You have no right to try to correct me, not after what you did. I'll say what I have to say and you'll listen or you can leave. I didn't ask you to come here. The reason why you chose Kara wasn't that you think she's more generous but because she's more gullible than me. You influence her easily and what has happened is proof of the power you have over her. You knew I would never listen to you but she's a different story. Kara being Luna of StonePaw practically makes you Luna of StonePaw. Congratulations, you've achieved everything you wanted but you broke your family up. You ruined us. I will never forgive Kara or you for what you did to me. You've lost a daughter, but I don't believe this matters to you, does it?"

She didn't answer her. They glared at each other for a few moments and then she turned on her heel and left. Rae packed in peace. She wasn't disturbed. Once she finished packing, she grabbed her backpack and put a cap on her head. She looked around at her room one last time. It would be the last time she'd ever look at it.

Rae thought of leaving through the backdoor but decided against it. Why should she leave like a fugitive? She was wronged, not the other way around. If Kara left with her intended mate through the front door, why should she hide?

The living room was thankfully empty. She didn't come across any employees and she wondered where everyone was. It wasn't normal, there was usually someone around. The front door was wide open and when Rae walked through it, she understood why the house was so empty.

Everyone was gathered outside. Kara was standing beside Negan and her parents were with her, saying their goodbyes. They lied to her about them; they hadn't left. They were probably in bed when Rae confronted them about their betrayal.

It stung, seeing them together. It hurt so much that she wanted to run toward Kara and tackle her to the ground. She should've turned back, she thought of doing so because if someone saw her, it would be more humiliating.

But she didn't, and when she realized it, everyone was watching her.

She met Negan's eyes. Her whole world stopped for a fraction of a second and then everything came rushing back. Kara touched his arm and that was it. Something snapped inside of her and she charged forward. Her parents stepped in front of them and her father put a hand on her shoulder to stop her. "Rae," he said, "Rae, please."

"Just leave," her mother said through her teeth, "Go."

"Now you want me to leave?" Rae asked in a loud voice. Her father was trying to convince her to go back inside but she wasn't listening to him. She was glaring at the newly-mated couple over his shoulder.

"Congratulations," she said, "I was told you left last night but that clearly wasn't the case."

"Rae!"

"I don't understand why you didn't tell me sooner," she continued, pushing past her mother. "I would've gladly attended your mating ceremony. I don't know why you decided to keep the truth from me until the last possible second." She then looked down at Kara's belly. "You're not showing yet. How lucky. Congratulations nonetheless."

Kara looked horrified. She was looking from side to side. Negan's brows were furrowed but his anger didn't scare her. The only thing that scared her at the moment was her fury.

Her mother grabbed her arm. "You're overstepping a line!"

"Don't touch me!" she bellowed. "I'm overstepping a line? There is no line! They erased it long ago. Come now, mother, let's not act like this was a secret. The only person who was blind and clueless here was me. I'm sure everybody here knew what was going on between them, which is why everyone looked at me strangely. I didn't understand it before but now I know. I'm sure they even heard her moans in the middle of the night!"

"You will not speak of my mate in such a manner!" Negan yelled. "She is the Luna of StonePaw and you will show her respect!"

"Oh, go fuck yourself with your whore's title!" she said. The pack gasped. Her mother was horrified. Rae didn't care. She was beyond caring. "Your titles here are simple a courtesy. You have no jurisdiction here. I'll talk to you however I want, you pieces of shit!"

"Rae!" her father yelled. "Enough!"

"You all betrayed me!" she continued. "All of you! I bet you laughed every time you saw me and this...this jerk together because you all knew! And you, Kara," she said, turning to fix her sister a look. "You're the worst of them all, you envious bitch. You wanted what was mine because you couldn't get anything better yourself. You should be ashamed of what you did! Ashamed! You think you won? Oh, you know nothing. You'll never win. You might be the Luna of StonePaw but your little pup will be a bastard! A bastard! In a few decades, a bastard will be the Alpha of StonePaw. There is nothing more shameful."

She stopped. She was breathing hard but her heart was lighter. She felt clean. She stepped back and met her family's eyes. Kara was crying silently but Rae didn't pity her.

Negan left her side and approached her. His nostrils were flared. Spittle flew from his mouth when he spoke. "You speak of us as if you have any clue of what transpired between us. You think your sister pursued me but it was I who pursued her! I pursued her because I saw right away how much better than you she was and I knew that I would be making a grave mistake if I made you my Luna. Look at you. You're cheap and immature. Why didn't you tuck your tail between your legs and disappeared like you intended to? You think you're so much better than her, don't you? You thought you were irreplaceable."

Rae narrowed her eyes at him. "I am irreplaceable. I am better than her. At least I didn't spread my legs for a male who hadn't even asked for my hand as she did! You're trying to justify what she did because you've already mated with her but I'd be careful if I were you. A whore will always be a whore. She'll sleep with every male in your pack and allow them to ravage her the same way you did!"

Their mother crumbled to the floor and Kara rushed to her side. Rae didn't care and apparently, neither did Negan. She continued. She had plenty to say. "I'm not ashamed to admit that I loved and admired you but now I see you for what you are. You're weak, you couldn't handle someone like me. You weren't even male enough to admit to me that you were fucking my sister!"

"Rae, leave!" her father commanded.

"I'll leave when I'm finished."

Negan tilted his head and said, "I'm glad you have such a high opinion of yourself, Rae of BloodMoon, but know this: a weak male didn't want you as his mate. How does that make you feel? I'd rather father a bastard, a million bastards, than father a pup with you."

Rae wished she could say that his words didn't sting but they did. She stared at him hard and then looked at everyone. They were all watching her as if they expected her to say something back but she bit her tongue. She humiliated herself far enough. It was better if she left. Besides, she had said everything she intended to say. She didn't have time to waste, she had a long day ahead of her.

She turned around and left.

Although Rae's head was pounding with everything that was said and done back at BloodMoon, she kept going. She didn't know where she was going, that was the truth. She didn't have a map with her and she had no experience hiking or venturing too deep into the woods. She was the Alpha's daughter and so hunting was never her obligation. She was, however, taught to hunt and prepare the meat for consumption. It was basic training that every wolf had to have at some point in their lives. It was necessary. She was glad that she had done it at eighteen. She remembered most of it and so she would be alright. She wouldn't starve, at least. Making camp was an entirely different story but she would have to adapt and learn. There was no turning back, not after what she said. She didn't want to, in any case, and it didn't matter to her how scared she was. She would keep her word and never return to BloodMoon unless it was under force. She doubted that they'd come looking for her, anyway. Her moth

"What are you doing here!?" she asked hysterically, backing into the wall. To her dismay, she noticed that her backpack was right beside him. It was wide opened. There was a banana peel by his feet which meant that he had been eating her food for some time. She hadn't noticed him come in. He was eating her food. The only food she had left. "Give that back!" she exclaimed. "That's mine!" "Not anymore," she said, opening his mouth and pouring the remnants of the crackers straight into his mouth. He then balled the empty packet in his fist and threw it so it landed beside the peel. He began rummaging through her bag and she immediately reacted. She stood but he was too fast for her. He stood as well. She was instantly intimidated by his height. He could hurt her if he wanted to. He still might. The chances of her running out and escaping were higher than recovering her backpack. He said, "Not so fast. Sit back down.""No.""I can easily catch you," he remarked. "You're not much of a

"You can leave me alone now.""Do you have any idea where you're going?" he asked, ignoring her statement. "You can't be wandering around the woods without having a clue of where you are. You might accidentally wander into someone's territory."Rae let out a scoff. "Someone's territory? This is the wilderness. It doesn't belong to anyone!" He was catching up to her so she sped up. "See, that's where you're wrong. You don't know anything about being a rogue, do you? Come on, tell me. What do you think a rogue is? We were all told stories about them when we were younger. Trust me, it's far from the truth. Rogues aren't wanderers or simply packless. They have packs. They have territories. When a rogue is in a pack, he abides by certain rules and you'll be lucky if you come across one that's in a pack.""Like you?" "Of course," he said. He the

Rae and Keegan walked for what felt like an eternity to her. She was tired, thirsty, and still hungry. Since he was carrying her bag, she couldn't access her food and in any case, eating out of her stash would mean she would have to share with him since he was kind enough to offer her help. She didn't want to. Yes, it was a selfish way of thinking but she was on her own. She had to think of her survival. It was the only one that mattered. "We're almost there," he said over his shoulder. "Do you live alone?" she asked. She had to start asking him questions related to that. She should have done so earlier, actually, before she accepted his help. "I have a pack." "You do?" "Yes," he said, "I've been building it for years. It wasn't easy but I managed. There are a few wolves I don't trust as much but trust isn't essential at the moment. I need numbers to overthrow Negan. After that, I'll decide what to do about the ones that don't please me.""That's harsh," she said, unable to keep

When Rae awoke, it was still day. The caravan was gray, though, not bright with sunlight. She parted the curtain above her bed and saw that the sky was overcast. She heard thunder rolling and rumbling in the distance. Still, the windows were dry, so it hadn't rained yet. She lay back down and sighed heavily. She loved this kind of weather. She'd always find something fun to do whenever it rained, like read or work on her craft. She had left her box of handmade jewelry behind and now she regretted it. She felt taking it with her would add to the weight she had to carry and anyway, those bracelets wouldn't help her out in the wild. But she had been working on them since she was nine years of age, they had meaning to her. She made them before she could ever read. Now, there was nothing to do but stare at the red curtain above her and think of a more simple time. She always felt that something was missing from her life but she was happy. "Then you're going to have to get naked in front of me. Don't take long. The sooner we can start, the better." He left the caravan and she fumed. She walked to the bathroom and changed out of her pants and t-shirt. She put on the outfit she wore the previous day and walked out. Keegan was standing in front of the door. He gestured at her to follow him. There were even more males outside than yesterday. She tried not to look at anyone as she followed Keegan. They were heading toward the woods, which she was thankful for. She wouldn't have to be around the males for an unnecessarily long time. When the encampment disappeared from her sight, she breathed a lot easier. She hadn't forgotten the previous night's incide

Rae and Keegan had lunch, which consisted of unseasoned grilled rabbit and some more stale bread. She was tired but not as tired as her wolf form. Eerily. He watched her keenly and she sensed that he was going to say something to her concerning their training. She was right. "You seem fine.""I know what you're thinking," she said, "but I'm not lying. I couldn't move back there but I'm fine now. It's indescribable.""I don't think you're lying," he said. "It's not as strange as you might think. I guess there's a lot about your body that you don't understand.""What are you talking about?" He took a bite of his sandwich and resumed watching her. A moment later he said, "Your wolf is wounded. It's hiding."His words hurt her more than his blows earlier. She swallowed the piece of bread she had in her mouth dryly and ate nothing else for the remainder of the day. Rae was still thinking about his words but she was a lot calmer, so she made her decision quickly and with a clear mind in the morning. Not wanting to seek revenge wasn't the right decision, or rather, it wasn't her wolf's decision. She saw that now. Her weak form wanted her to take the easy way out of the situation, which was to act as if it never happened and forget Negan and Kara. On the surface, running was her solution to everything. Deep down, she wanted all of them to suffer for making her suffer. As long as she denied that to herself, she'd ache. It wasn't an easy decision to make but she was astounded by how freeing it was. She didn't regret leaving her pack but something had to be done. She couldn't leave it at that or she'd be an even bigger coward than the two of them joined. Keegan was right, he was totally right. Rae awoke in a light room. She felt the area around her with the tips of her fingers. She could move her hand. Linen. A soft mattress. A sheet covered her body. She was in a bed. She instantly relaxed, and fell asleep for a few minutes again before trying again. There was the scent of bleach in the air. She knew that scent well, it was a detergent that her mother loved to use. Thinking about her now meant nothing to her. She didn’t feel pain. Her absence from her life did nothing for her. The wolf who made her heart ache was her father and him alone. He had been kind to her, and she wished that they had parted ways on better terms. Rae would never see anyone from her family again. It was strange to think about, but it was the truth. Trying to figure out where she was wasn’t easy. There were two options. Rather, there was only one probable one, but she would include the unrealistic one in her possibilities. One, was that she was at StonePaw. Where else would Keegan have taken her, i

Rae searched the grassy field for something. Anything that she could use as a weapon. There was something glittering in the dark, and upon inspection, she discovered that it was a thick shard of glass. She picked it up. Nobody paid any attention to her. Everyone was engrossed in their own fight. She saw Negan and Keegan tumbling around in the dirt. They were still in their wolf forms. She held the glass tightly, but not sharply enough to cut her hand. Any extra injuries wouldn’t be doing her any favors. She neared them. Neither of them noticed her, and she began to fear that they wouldn’t. She stopped a safe distance away from him. She thought of calling Keegan’s name, but that would distract him and give Negan the advantage. So she held her breath and called out, “Negan!”He turned his head to her sharply. Keegan did the same. The point of this was to give Keegan the advantage, but he didn’t take it. Her guess was that he was too shocked at seeing her. Now that she had his attent

How would Rae get there? It was all that she was asking herself. She began walking. She didn't know where she was going. All she knew was that she couldn't stop and do nothing. How could he abandon her again, without a word? How could he make such a big decision without her?Rae felt hurt and betrayed, but she had to remind herself that Keegan wasn't himself. She had never seen him lose so much control. He was a shadow of his former self, and she knew that he would only go back to what he was once he killed his brother. But that was the whole problem. Fighting Negan was not a piece of cake. His pack was strong, and although Keegan's group had been reinforced by the males from WoodFur, they were all injured. The ones who weren't were very few. They would not stand a chance against StonePaw. So, why did he leave? Rae was walking around without any sense of direction. She was walking away

Smoke was everywhere. Rae sniffed her arm, and could smell it on her skin. It was rancid, and a constant reminder of what had happened. The house was black, and everything inside of it had burned. Nothing could be salvaged, and they lost most of their food. It was kept in a small room under the stairs, and had burned along with everything else. Three lives were lost, two of Keegan’s males, and the female who had been whipped by the cruel Beta of WoodFur before Keegan showed up. She couldn’t outrun the flames, it seemed. She had been in bed rest for the whole week. Rae’s heart ached for her, and when she heard of her passing, she cried. The unfairness of it all was too bitter. A lot of wolves were injured, and Rae along with Tara, all of the females, and some of the males who knew how to clean and disinfect wounds, had their hands full. She had never wrapped a wound before, so she was learning along the way. Tara taught her the basics, but it was far from enough. Watching their fac

They lied awake, staring at the ceiling of their bedroom. Rae was beyond spent. Her body ached deliciously, and the sleep that hovered above her threatened to drag her under its murky waters at any moment. Her fingers were interlocked with Keegan's. The warmth in them was unimaginable. He emanated enough heat to keep her warm. It was almost as if he was feverish all of the time. The night was lovely and breezy. Rae couldn't have imagined a better evening to be mated to him. It was the coolest night in the whole of summer. The moon had decided to bless their union in the most surprising way. She glanced at Keegan and saw that he turned to look at her at the same time. His lips curved into a smile, and he turned his body so he was lying on his side, and closed the distance between them. His fingers were on her hips. "Are you okay?""I'm perfectly okay," she said, smiling. "I didn't think that I could be this happy. In the beginning of this week, things were so grim and hopeless. I n

The after-ceremony was more entertaining than Rae thought possible. The food was amazing, and everyone ate and danced merrily. Rae was glued to Keegan's side, and nothing could tear them apart. Everyone in the pack congratulated them, including Keegan's Beta, whose name she had finally learned; Jace. How had she forgotten? When she told Keegan that she had completely forgotten his name, he laughed. "Don't worry about it," he said, and kissed her full on the lips. "I don't think he minds. He's a practical wolf."Rae couldn't have asked for anything better. She was truly content. The evening was better than she thought it would be, and all her nervousness left her. She felt totally at ease amongst everyone. She ate and drank a little, mostly because she was nervous for what would happen after the after. And the way Keegan looked at her was a confirmation to her that he was thinking about the same thing. She felt hot all over, and trembled occasionally. Now that she had a taste of wha

The day of their mating finally arrived. Rae was dressed in the fine dress that Tara had remedied. It had belonged to the Luna of WoodFur, and now it was hers. The design was a little different than the usual ones—the bodice was tight-fitting, and there was a slit on the side of the skirt so she could move freely. The sleeves had been ditched because the days were getting increasingly hot, and overall, Rae was absolutely in love with it. "Thank you," she said to Tara. "I can't take you enough for making this beautiful design for me. I look...I don't think I've ever looked this beautiful.""The pleasure is all mine," she replied with a smile. "You've saved us all from a miserable end. For that, I will always be thankful. You and Alpha Keegan saved our lives."Rae blushed. "It was our pleasure."Tara took her hand in hers and they stared at each other’s faces for a full minute. Rae felt truly grateful for her help. Rae slept for the better part of the day. She woke up feeling exhausted yet refreshed. Her muscles hurt, but it was a good like of pain, especially because she knew why they hurt so much. There was a smile plastered onto her face, and she couldn't stop smiling no matter how silly she felt. Last night was a marvelous experience, and she was thankful that he gave her a taste of what their mated life would look like. She was ready for the big commitment. It wasn't just that he made her feel good, it also had to do with the way she felt about Keegan excluding everything that they had done. To know that they could make love like that was a bonus. She hadn't expected that when she first fell in love with him. She wanted to make love with him every single day. She was excited for it to happen. The two of them had dinner inside their tent, and Rae ate well for the first time in a long time. Everything was delicious; she ate as if her life depended on it, and perhaps it did. For the most part, Keegan watched her, and he did so with a faint smile on his lips. “Good?” he asked. She nodded. “For you, only the best,” he said, and she blushed. “The cooks here are spectacular. They had months of food kept all over the place. A cruel folk, they were. Starving all of you for their benefit. The injustice makes my blood boil.”“It’s over now,” Rae said to him after she swallowed her mouthful of wine. “You’re here to make everything right. You’ve saved them all.”Keegan smiled, then leaned in for a kiss. Rae felt delighted. She had forgotten the argument they had about StonePaw, and chose to live in the moment. There was no use in stressing about something that hadn’t happened yet. She was only shortening the beautiful moments, and tainting them with her worries and despair. She had
