~Thorn~

“Your Majesty, Duchess Fallon Von Keem is here to see you.” Colby my butler came into the study to alert me. I nodded to him before responding.

“Send my regrets, I have other matters to attend to.” I replied. I could see the fear in his eyes. Fallon Von Keem was a raging fire among a forest. She was relentless and unpredictable. I didn’t even have an interest in her. Of course my father didn’t care about that; he only cared that she would be an advantageous pawn later. However, Colby would do anything I told him to even at great risk to himself. Due to this I promised to take care of his family should anything happen to him. It was the least that I could do.

“Right away your Majesty” He answered before leaving the study.

~Fallon~

I was sitting in the Tea room at the royal palace. I had come all this way to spend time with my fiance. But his butler intercepted me before I had made it to his study. He worked way too much. It was almost irritating. But after sitting here, made to wait, I finally heard footsteps. However when the same butler came around the corner alone, I couldn’t hide the disappointment on my face.

“Duchess Fallon Von Keem, I regret to inform you that the prince is busy this evening and will have to send a notification to meet at a later date.” The man said, but I could hear the small tremble behind his voice. I guess the castle wasn’t impenetrable when it came to rumors. I wanted to scream and throw a fit but I knew better. As the future Queen I had to be the picture of poise and grace. I put a plastic smile on my face.

“Very well send his Majesty my love and affection then.” Before I walked past him to exit the building. After walking the long length of the castle walls. I entered my carriage. While I held my composure that didn’t change that I was angry. I would tell daddy about this, it was disrespectful. The prince always has an excuse to not meet me. My father made it seem like he really wanted his marriage but lately I’m not so sure. It’s like he's purposely avoiding me.

That’s fine though I will be the next Queen of this empire, no matter how much he tries to rid himself of me. The first time I was introduced to him, he argued with his father over it. It was disrespectful to my father and me both. The prince voiced his disdain of the idea of us being betrothed. I felt humiliated when he called me names and said I wasn’t good enough to be Queen.

~Thorn~

As the day came to an end, I finished off the last piece of paperwork for the day. As I was signing the last paper, Colby entered the room to tell me it was time. I stood with a sigh and headed down to meet the rest of my family.

“Ready to head out?” My father asked as I entered the room. My mother and I both nodded to him before following him out to the carriage. Princess Rein was left with her nanny, she was only ten and had not made her debut yet. Once she turned 15 she would make her way into society officially. The ride to the Sparrow estate was still tense. You could’ve cut the air with a knife, my mother fidgeted in the carriage due to it. Tensions between my father and me were still quite high. After I outright rejected the Duke's daughter to the Duke's face, my father and I had countless arguments following that day.

Once we got to the Sparrow estate, I quickly left the carriage. It was like gasping for air and then finally getting it. I helped my mother out of the carriage and my father followed after her. We followed my father into the building and into the dining area. As we entered the dining room the Sparrow family stood and bowed to us. Once my father sat, the rest of us in the room followed. The flushed daughter immediately caught my eye. She was a beauty to behold. Her red hair was vibrant and her cheeks were rosie despite her pale complexion. I would have tried to marry her but her weak constitution disqualified her. Her sister was also a beauty to behold but the rumor was that she was going into sainthood. No one was quiet sure if that was true or just some rumor.

“How have you been feeling Lady Nyx, you never attend the parties. It’s such a shame that such beauty is hidden away in this musty manor.” I asked her trying to spark conversation. But it was as if she didn’t hear me. She seemed lost in her thoughts which made my heart melt even more for her. But something that caught me off guard was the sudden fear that spread across her face. As soon as it started however it was gone.

“Your Majesty, please forgive me, I was distracted.” She said but the look of terror was once again there. It wasn’t me was it? Something deep inside me wanted to comfort her. Protect her from the evils of the world. I sighed before asking again, this time giving a child-like huff at the end hoping she would laugh. However, when she didn’t I was filled with surprise.

“Well your Majesty, my illness is unpredictable, so I do tend to miss many events. I’m sorry.” She said in an earnest manner. I nodded in understanding and decided to not make anymore conversation with her. My father would find some way to throw it in my face otherwise. I opted to talk to Theoran about war and politics. A couple times throughout my conversation with Theoran, I would lock eyes with Lady Nyx. This would make her blush a deep red and look down to hide it. It was honestly the cutest thing I had ever seen. Once dinner finally ended we moved into the tea room.

When I entered I didn’t see Lady Nyx anywhere. That’s when I saw some of the material blocking the door out to the terrace move in the wind. Pushing the material aside I headed through the door onto the balcony overlooking the gardens. There Lady Nyx was looking up into the stars. Her hair fell down her back and her dress dazzled beautifully in the night air. She was breathtaking even in the simplest ways. I wonder if she knew how pretty she was. I strided to her side before resting my hands on the stone rail as well. I seemed to catch her off guard.

“Your Majesty.” She said as she turned to curtsy but I put my hand up to stop her before she could.

“Please don’t.” I said, making her stop and nodded her head before turning back toward the gardens. She sighed leaning into the railing more as she became lost in thought.

“Nyx,” I said and waited for her to meet my eyes. Once she did I continued. “You seem unhappy here? Why?” I questioned. Again fear entered into her face but was gone before I was completely sure that I saw it.

“Um, no I just haven’t felt the best lately and this dinner takes a lot out of me you Majesty.” She stumbled out as she faked fatigue in order to make it more believable. However, I was less convinced. Has the Marquess been lying to everyone all this time about her condition? She is very beautiful so maybe he did it to protect her. Our eyes locked again and before I could stop myself I leaned in and kissed her. Her lips were soft and wet, making me goan. As soon as the kiss started however it ended. She was very panicked as she pulled away, a frown formed on my face.

“Your Majesty, I’m so s-sorry, I-I can’t…” She trailed off as she walked backwards. Again her face was full of fear as she continued to apologize. She then turned and ran through the door. I sighed in frustration running my hand through my hair. As I entered back into the tea room my mother called to me.

“Thorn you ready to head home?” I nodded and bid the Sparrow family goodnight.

I looked up to see Colby waiting for me to meet his face. “Your Majesty, I was told you needed my services?” He questioned filled with confusion since I didn’t call for him during late hours very often. “Yes, I need you to look into something for me. Specifically into Lady Nyx.” When I said her name Colby’s face lit up with even more confusion. “Lady Nyx Sparrow, your Majesty?” He questioned again with a bewildered look on his face. “Yesm something is off about her behavior. ~Nyx~ Life has been pretty uneventful for the last couple of weeks. I do my regular day to day chores without having a bunch of trouble. To my luck I’ve avoided Ariel and her mess. My father hasn’t asked me to attend any events either. It makes me happy because knowing my luck I’d messed it up. Then my father would punish me again. It’s sickening that he enjoys hurting me. I am his blood after all. Since I had the rest of this day off I decided to take a walk in the woods near the manor. It was one of my favorite things to do. After a while of walking I came to a small brook. I decided to sit down at the base of an oak tree near the water. I took in all the nature smells around me. Thoughts of the crowned prince filled my mind. Honestly, why was I even still thinking about him? If he knew that I was not even considered a noble by my own family would he still like me? If he saw me in the dress of commoners would he still find me beautiful. Not that any of this even mattered. He was

Once I returned to the estate grounds I headed to the servant chambers. Once I reached my room, I grabbed my bathing supplies and headed to the bath house. Since it was late it was unlikely that anyone would be there and I would be able to enjoy myself. I entered the dimly moonlit bath house. I took my robe off before entering the moonlit bath house. I took off my robe and entered the warm milky waters. Powdered goat milk was added to the bath water everyday when it was refilled in the morning. The bath waters smelled like jasmine as I eased my way into the water. I loved when they went with jasmine over rose oil. Since jasmine was harder to acquire during certain months it was used less. I loved the smell of it better anyway. I took my time to enjoy the water. Washing my hair and body before letting myself float. It was bliss until I heard footsteps entering

I walked over to my father’s desk and sat down the tray “Good Morning Master Sparrow.” I said before bowing to leave. A voice filled the room before I could however. What the man said gave me chills all over my body and made me stop dead in my tracks. “How much for the maid Marquess Sparrow?” The Count’s son asked my father. His voice held a smirk to it. I winced with my back still to them. The thought of my father agreeing would be even worse. I slowly turned filled with horror. My father’s face was filled with cooled anger, only someone who knew him well would know he was mad. “She’s not for sale, Lord Viscoff. Sorry to disappoint you.” My father replied with a grim expression. “You may go Lora.” He waved to me to leave. Lora was my middle name and was the name he used in the presence of h

~Thorn~ “Follow me to my study, your grace. We can discuss the matters you are here for.” Marquess Sparrow stated. We walked into the manor and to his study in silence. I’ve never cared much for the Marquess Sparrow. His sons were alright and I had never met Josephine since she was sent off before she debuted. Once inside he ordered a maid to bring us some refreshments. He waited for me to take a seat first. I sighed to myself and sat down on the chaise. He followed me and sat down on the other one. We sat in a comfortable silence. At Least it was comfortable for me. I would see the Marquess fidget every so often. Before long the maid returned, setting the tea and treats before us. She bowed before leaving us to discuss business. “To whom do I owe the pleasure of your Majesty?” Marquess Sparrow questioned as he poured two cups of tea. He sat back bring his tea to his lips. “I’m here to see Lady Nyx, I’d like to officially court her.” I stated point blank. There was no reason for

~Nyx~ Shock filled my being, what he just said had to be a lie. The Crowned Prince would never be so bold. Why would he be so interested in me anyway? The kiss he had managed to land on my lips came to mind instantly. It made me want to internally groan. Speaking of that, why did he even kiss me to begin with. He is to be married soon. I stared at my father, my eyes wide with fear. I felt like I was suffocating in this room. “Is there something you would like to tell me Nyx?” My father questioned me. I gulped at the venom and annoyance that was evident in his voice. I shook my head and uttered a quiet no. He sighed and rubbed his temple. “Why is it that you can’t help but get the family into deep shit.” He slammed his fist on the desk so hard it made me jump. “Do you know what the Duke could do to our family Nyx?” He shouted at me with pure anger. I stayed quiet and shook my head. Being careful to keep my eyes on the ground. My father sat back in his chair. “Leave me, you’re

~Nyx~ The week had been uneventful and slow. Fear lived deep inside me that Ariel would blab her gums about what she had seen. It would be my undoing and the punishment that would come for it would be the worst one. It would be the demise that would send me to the grave. I’d be lucky if I survived it. Ariel had avoided me all week which was surprising since she enjoyed taunting me. I sat in the back side of the garden away from prying eyes. It was one of my favorite spots to come to. I was able to hide away from everything that this world had to offer me. I would lay in the soft grass and let myself dream with the clouds as they passed by. It was a childish dream that I would float away with them. Away from all the abuse and scars. Sadly that never happened. It was a nice dream though. I fell back onto that very grass that had given me solace and comfort ever since I was a child. I was letting myself daydream when a shadow overcast me. I opened one of my eyes to see who it was. This made me chuckle. "I promise everything I'm doing will make sense one day. I'll see you at dinner Nyx." I winked before turning to leave. It took everything in me to not turn around. Since it was almost the end of the day so it would have to wait tomorrow. I settled into bed to go to sleep, I was going to be getting up pretty early tomorrow. I drifted off with her lovely face on my mind. ~Next Day~ I rised before the sun had even risen. Dressed in a dark gray cloak I slipped out of the manor and to the stables. The stable hand had my horse ready to go. I mounted her and kicked for her to run. She took off at a quick gait** toward the castle. The air was cool and the fog was heavy. I took in the fresh air. I felt like I was sufficating in that manor. The only one keeping me sane was Lady Nyx. As I entered the castle I halted and dismounted my horse handing her off to a palace stable boy. I entered the grand palace walking to the gardens that Thorn told me to meet him in. As I entered I seen him standing there in is

I knew he hated me for making him do this but it was the best way. "Your Majesty, how can I help you?" The Marquess spoke as he took a seat in his chaise. I took a seat across from him with my arms crossed. "I think you know, how did Nyx get back here when she was staying with Duke Noc?" I said with more venom than I intended. The Marquess chuckled and tsked at me. "That's none of your concern, your majesty. I'm very disappointed that you didn't escort her back the moment you found out." He snapped back at me. I gritted my teeth at his response. The Marquess was brave to act this way toward me. "Actually it is." I boomed my anger getting the best of me. Damn me a

Once in my room I washed my hands and face. Drying my face quickly I headed down stairs for dinner. I entered the dining room to see I was one of the last ones to arrive. Father's unruly gaze fixated on me. It was clear he was pissed but holding it in. He couldn't ruin his perfect reputation as the perfect man. He made the public thinking he was this loving doting father but that was far from the truth. Father gave me a warning glare before I took my seat. Once we were all seated the meal was called in. It was tomato basil soup tonight. One of my favorites, Yareha, made the best soup ever. My mouth watered as it was served. My father prayed before taking the first bite queuing that everyone else may eat now. I wasted no time grabbing some fresh baked bread from the many bowls in front of me. I dipped it in the soup before ginger

I didn't particularly want to see Duke Noc either. Him and my sister seemed to be hitting it off. He had bought her lavish gifts which he presented at dinner. ****Flashback**** I was sitting at dinner eating with my head down when Duke Noc cleared his throat to gain everyone's attention. Everyone looked at him as he stood and moved closer to my sister who was sitting across from him. My father was very strict on where everyone sat at the table. Loved ones always sat across from each other. The only exception was Ariel because she was not a noble by blood. "Lady Sparrow, my sweet Josephine, you are as radiant as the sun. As ethereal as the moon. You are the emerald of the earth. The sapphire of the seas. And the diamond of my eye." He said in a sickly sweet voice. ~Nyx~ Today is the day that Duke Noc will be here. I would be a liar if I said it wasn’t going to hurt to see him with Josephine. My time at his estate had caused me to grow fond of him. I guess I hadn’t realized my feelings for him until I heard of the proposed marriage between them. I got up as a maid who also didn’t care for me entered. She was a close friend of Ariel’s. Though she wasn’t verbal with her abuse but did small things to humiliate the one she picked on. Which tended to be me. If I remembered right her name was Brooke. I sat down in front of my vanity so Brooke could brush my hair. She ripped through my hair with the brush. Making my scalp ache and hurt but I bit my lip. I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of me being in pain. After ten grueling minutes she had braided my hair into a nice updo. Little stands of my wild hair fell in curls along the sides of my face. She helped me dress in a simple dress. It had a cream top and a red satin skirt that fell down to

Thorn had always had strong opinions on the way I acted. But it was only when we were alone so he could hop off. I smirked, getting up taunting his eye roll with my own. Thorn shook his head chuckling in minor annoyance. “Why are you like this?” He asked. But instead of an answer I just mocked his words back at him. This caused him to give me a tight lipped squint. I chuckled childishly at my action. “Come on, you child.” Thorn said, loading the horses before mounting his. I broke out in a large smile and did the same. We were close to the Marquess manor.
