Chapter 48

"Come on," I groan as I heave myself to my feet, "let's head back".

"Okay," Erin sighs as I offer a hand to help her up, "no running this time," I smile and nod in thankful agreement.

It feels like an age till we are close enough to the packhouse to see its top-floor windows reflect the mid-morning sun. Erin slows to a walk as we pass by the woods, and I gratefully copy, feeling out of shape. Erin hasn't said much on the way home but I can tell there's something on her mind, on the tip of her tongue she wants to say.

"Out with it,"

"What?" She says with a taken aback, shocked look on her face.

"Come on, you're dying to say something, it's written all over your face. Come on, just say it. " We've been friends for too long for her to be able to hide anything from me, annoyingly it works both ways.
