NICO
I never thought I would say those words out loud. But I did. I loved her, every inch of my stubborn little mate. Love was a four-letter word I didn’t believe in until now. This painful feeling when I looked at her, at times it felt like I couldn’t breathe now I know what it was called. I loved her. So much it hurt. And now she was carrying my pups, twins. There were no words to describe what I felt. Joy, fear, love, all mixed together.
She wanted us to move on from this life I knew. Would it be possible to leave it behind? Big Jim always said that you don’t choose this life, it chooses you and I believed him. But for Darina I would do anything, anything to keep her and my babies safe. I just had to finish this, get my revenge, and kill Petrov. It all seemed so simple, but the truth was I feared how it would end.
Darina helped Mariana prepare dinner for us in Mariana’s small, crowded kitchen. I sat outside in the icy winter breeze, smoking and planning my next move. I would leave early the next morning. The Shadow Moon Pack lived out of town at the foot of the Andalucian mountains. Although Mariana urged me to let Victor help, I refused. There was no sense in getting them involved in my business. Not only because of my resentment to their pack, but it would start a war on a greater scale which I didn’t need to be a part of.
“Hey, you seem very wrapped up in your thoughts. Mariana called you like three times, but you didn’t respond.” Darina startled me out of my musings. “Come inside. Dinner is on the table.”
I caught her around the waist and pulled her onto my lap. She wore one of Mariana’s aprons. “Look at you, acting all domestic.” I teased.
She scoffed, pouting her pretty lips. “I do know how to prepare a meal Nico.”
“Hmm. Not just a pretty face.” I said, “Although it wouldn’t matter to me if you couldn’t cook.”
She laughed, “Only because you have one of the best cooks at home.”
I chuckled that was not what I meant. “We do, but I don’t want him in my bed.”
Darina’s pretty mouth gaped open. “So you only want me for my body?” she rolled her eyes at me.
“I want all of you all the time.” I said and meant it.
Mariana called us from the kitchen. Darina giggled, pulling away from my embrace.
“You don’t want to keep your aunt waiting.”

Mariana entertained us with stories of her and my mother’s youth, all the mischief they were up to. Darina enjoyed her tales and seemed more relaxed which I felt relieved. It made it easier for me to leave her.
“But you never took a mate, Aunt Mariana? Why is that?” I asked although I thought I knew the reason.
“Now that’s none of your business young Nico.” She waved a finger at me. Her cheeks were aflame because of the Mulberry wine. “So nosy. You remind me too much of your mother. Always up in my business.”
I shrugged. “Can’t blame me for asking. Your soulmate must be out there somewhere though.”
Mariana sighed. “No thank you. I’ve no interest in tying myself down to anyone. I’m fine on my own.”
Darina laid a hand on mine. “I guess not all of us are so lucky to find the one you’re meant to be with.”
“Well in my case let’s just say I don’t like to be someone’s second choice.” Mariana said and poured more wine into her glass.
I remembered Victor saying how he loved my mother and I felt bad for Mariana.
“But forget about me. You have to be careful Nico. This Snake Man or Naga you told me about – you say he is keeping Constantin captive and his venom is slowly killing him?”
“Venom? You never told me that.” Darina scowled at me. “What in god’s name is a Naga?”
“An ancient snake race.” Mariana said. “There has to be an antidote for the venom I might have some books on it. Darina can help me search for it while you’re away.”
“Good.” That ought to keep her occupied, keep her mind off me for a while, I hoped. “I have yet to see him transform if that is at all possible.”
“You should kill him before he does.” Mariana suggested. “If you can get near enough.”
“I can’t listen to this anymore.” Darina said and went fled out of the kitchen.
I hated seeing her upset and wanted to go to her, but Mariana held up her hand and motioned to me to sit back down.
“Leave her. You’re just going to make it worse,” she said. “You can’t blame her for being worried.”
“I don’t.” I sighed. “But I have to do this. I owe it to my mother.”
Mariana fixed me with her dark green stare. “Really Nico? Your mother is dead. Nothing you can do will change that. You want revenge for yourself.” She touched my arm. “I don’t judge you for that, but you need to move on from it. You have a future, don’t mess it up.”
What she said was true. “That may be so, but I am done with being manipulated and forced into submission by a power-hungry reptile. He thinks he’s won, holding my pack hostage, and offering Constantine like a carrot to a donkey. No, I don’t think so. When I was shunned by the werewolves, those humans took me in, and I owe it to them and myself to end this.”
Mariana nodded, “Yes, I get it dear child. But what you don’t see is that they too used and manipulated you, making you into a criminal. Your mother would frown down upon you to see what you’ve become.”
I laughed hard and bitter at her words. “That’s rich. Was it not part of our heritage to deceive and steal? We roamed the land with our caravans and our horses in the old days, cheating the humans out of their money, telling them all sorts of lies, stealing their children. I can go on.”
“True but times have changed. You can change, it’s your choice. It’s not the only way to live Nico.” Mariana cleared the table, banging the plates together. “Think about Darina and the pups.” She said, an edge to her voice and her eyes glittered.
“I think about them constantly.” I pushed my chair back hard. “I will get back as soon as I can.” I said and stomped up the stairs to the bedroom.

Darina’s golden hair fanned out on her pillow while she slept her dark eyelashes kissing her cheeks. I watched the gentle rise and fall of her chest and listened to the even beating of her heart. Closing my eyes I touched her lower abdomen and concentrated to see if I could feel the tiny fluttering of my twins’ hearts sleeping in her womb.
Yes, there it was, so faint, but I felt it, like butterfly wings flapping delicately and I smiled in wonder. Mine. All three of them belonged to me. Darina turned in her sleep and her fingers curled around my hand. I kissed her softly until she opened her sleepy grey eyes.
“I want you here with me.” she said, reaching for me. I didn’t need to be asked twice. We undressed each other swiftly, shedding our clothes like skin. Curbing my desire to dominate her, to take her with force, I held her tight to my body taking deep breaths to calm my aching yearning.
“I won’t break,” she nipped at my lips. “Take me. Hard. I want to remember this until you come back.” she panted against my neck, her fingers closed around my pulsating cock, tighter and tighter until I growled and grabbed her wrist. She grinned wickedly at me. I flipped her on her stomach.
“Get on your knees.”
She obeyed readily, lifting her sweet, rounded butt for me. With one hand fisted in her hair I entered her slick channel, holding onto her hip with the other. Hot and tight she welcomed me into her body, urging me on with her moans. Our skin slapped together as I rode her hard, pulling her head back to sink my canines into her shoulder.
Darina mewled and screamed my name as her muscles contracted, drawing me in, forcing my seed to spill into her. We collapsed in a panting heap on the hard, uncomfortable bed. I pulled her on top of my body.
“I love you little fox.” I whispered to her.
She smiled up at me. “And I love you Master Nico.”
I hardly slept that night. Darina lay in my arms our legs entangled not wanting to move from each other’s embrace. My wolf was restless, he wanted to stay with his mate, but I had to go. When the dawn peeked through the window I extracted myself from Darina, careful not to wake her. The wolf howled in my mind, and I felt his pain like knives in my belly. With one last long look at my baby girl’s face I slipped out of the room and down the stairs.
Leaving the city behind, the train snaked its way over the mist enshrouded lake, traveling east to the forest where the Shadow Moon Pack lived. I got off at the station sniffing the familiar woodsy scent and crisp mountain air that I had so long tried to forget. With my backpack slung over one shoulder I made my way out of the station, brushing past other passengers, blending in with them. A light snowfall covered the road and dampened my clothes as I began my journey on foot. I walked until I found a place among the trees lining the road that gave enough cover for me to transform into my wolf. Quickly I undressed, shoving everything into my backpack and I changed into my wolf form. The red wolf grabbed the backpack in his strong jowls and ran off in the direction of the Shadow Moon’s territory, keeping low to the ground careful not to be detected. Strange after so many years the way to the pack was so fresh in my memory that it seemed I’ve never been gone.I enjoyed the wolf’s excite
DARINADays passed and no word from Nico. I was getting restless. When I wasn’t sleeping, I was helping Mariana search through ancient books for information on the Naga. So far we haven’t found anything concrete. I felt tired the whole time, not to mention the morning sickness which seemed to stretch on until midafternoon.Victor came to visit after she closed shop for the evening. I sat in the back room pouring over an old book full of folklore and legends which I found fascinating.“Have you heard from Nico yet?” I heard Victor ask Mariana. It’s not like I wanted to eavesdrop, but with my enhanced hearing it was impossible not to.“No, the stubborn pup hasn’t contacted us. Stubborn like his mother but with his father’s looks. Every time I see him, he even looks more like him.” she said.I forgot all about the book I held in my hands. Mariana knows who Nico’s father is.“You should tell him about his father, Mariana. He has the right to know.” Victor said and I couldn’t agree with hi
“I don’t understand,” I said, “is there a difference between a Lycan and a werewolf.” I wanted to say ordinary werewolf, but nothing about them was ordinary. “I am very new to this supernatural world.”Victor nodded without taking his eyes off the road. “For one they’re stronger but they don’t have the ability to fully change into a wolf. Disturbing as fuck if you ask me.” He glanced at me. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be crass.”I chuckled, I was used to Nico’s swearing. “Is that all?”“Well, no. They regard themselves as superior to us which of course is bullshit. They think they’re smarter than us but have control over their transformation, can stay as long as they want in human or wolf form.”“But we can also do that, change at will, I mean.” I’ve seen Nico do that and so could I.“Sure, because we’ve evolved. But many years ago, we could only change when the moon was full. Now we can change when threatened.” Victor said. “I want you to be careful how you speak to him. Never look an Al
NICOA week of hell passed. Hell, because not only did I have to deal with the pack who I swore to destroy, but I missed Darina so much it was like a physical pain. At least there were so many matters that needed my attention it helped me to keep focus. Constantin left the pack with little to no finances. How they even survived these past years was a miracle. The young warriors needed training. Their fighting skills were hopeless. With no leader they slacked off and became lazy. I had to remedy that.“Useless! If this pack were attacked, you’ll all be dead!” I had them sparring against each other since early morning until noon. They were exhausted already, and I wasn’t nearly done with them yet. There were a few of them which I noticed had potential and I intended to take them with me to fight Petrov. One of them in particular stood out, an older wolf called Darius. He was strong and had defeated all of his sparring partners. I chose him for my Gamma.“Darius, get these weaklings int
DARINAVictor left me there with the beast and I was starting to have serious doubts about this. Alpha Zane’s dark eyes pierced me to the bone and despite my act of bravado I was afraid for my life. For what felt like an eternity he just stood there, tree stump arms folded across his mountainous chest, weighing me with his intense stare. My she-wolf whimpered in my mind and lay on her back exposing herself. I lowered my eyes.“You have no clue how to behave in front of an Alpha.” He said at last. He wasn’t wrong, but to my defense I was new to all this. I didn’t answer. In a flash he was in front of me, rough fingers lifted my chin.“Speak when spoken to girl.” He sniffed in my face.“No, I do not, Alpha. I am new to this.” I kept my eyes averted.“Who turned you?” Roughly he turned my face from side to side. “You have a strong she-wolf.”“Nico turned me.” I managed to say. He had my jaw clamped hard in his huge hand. “And you’re wrong about him. He doesn’t know I’m here.”He scoffed.
NICO“You have to calm down, Nico.” Victor pleaded. His face, still bloody from Mariana’s attack turned pale when he saw the look in my eyes.“Calm down?” With one hand I sent the kitchen table flying and crashing into the back door. Broken glass and ceramic crunched under my boots. I lifted Victor up by his neck and pushed him to the wall. His eyes bulged out of their sockets. I wanted to crush his windpipe. How dare he take Darina to that monster? I trusted them to look after her, to keep her safe.Mariana screamed at me to stop. “Nico, don’t! Victor only did what she asked him to do.” Mariana hung onto my arm.I dropped Victor to the ground where he lay fighting for breath. I turned on my aunt. She shrunk back from me.“And you!” I snarled at her, pointing, “Keeping the truth from me all these years. Everyone in the pack treated my mother like a whore and me like trash. And you knew…”“I promised your mother and I did it to protect you, Nico.” Mariana fisted my shirt in her hands.
“We share the same DNA but that is where it ends. You are nothing to me.” I huffed, holding the sharp steel against his throat.Darina screamed and pulled away from Victor. She ran to my side. “Don’t Nico. It won’t change the past.” Her soft hands closed around my hairy claw. I didn’t want her to touch me, didn’t want her to calm my rage. He deserved to die.“Get back!” I growled at her. She was dangerously near the beast, and I didn’t trust him not to use her against me.“Think of the future, our babies.” She knelt next to me, seemingly oblivious of the danger she was in; big grey eyes stared up into mine. “Don’t Nico. You are better than this.” She took the poker from my claw and placed her cheek against my palm. I felt the anger leaving my body as I caressed her soft skin. No! I grabbed her off her knees and threw her to the side. She slid across the floor, the poker clattering on the stone floor when it flew from her hand. I was on him in flash, my claws digging into his neck.“Wh
DARINA“Stupid, stupid girl! Going off like that and making me lose my mind!” Mariana laid into me the moment I stepped through the door. She shook me by the shoulders then hugged me. “What would I say to Nico if that beast killed you, huh?”“I’m fine and I’m sorry, Mariana. See, one piece.” I gently extracted myself from her steely grip.“For now.” Nico grumbled next to me.All the way back to his aunt’s place he didn’t speak a word to me. The icy looks he sent me warned of punishment to come. A delicious shiver went up and down my spine, but to be honest I was also a tiny bit afraid. For all his gentle words of love he was pissed as hell at me, and I’ve seen how violent he could be.“Glad you’re back, Alpha Nico.” A burly, darkhaired man greeted us, “Luna.” He bowed his head to me.“Luna?” I looked at Nico. He didn’t answer. How long would he give me the cold shoulder?“Alpha the warriors are getting impatient.” He took Nico to one side, and I went inside with Mariana.“Warriors?” I
The atmosphere in the living room was tense as seconds ticked by waiting for Nico’s reply. His arm around my waist tightened and trying to calm him, I stroked his broad back, feeling the muscles contract under my palm. But then he spoke. “Zane, Mariana, I don’t want my children to grow up not knowing where they came from. I want them to know their grandparents.”I blew out a deep breath I never knew I held in. Nico looked at me and back at them. “All these years knowing what hell we’ve suffered at the hands of Constantin and yet you did nothing. It’s hard to wrap my head around it, knowing that I am your son.” The lines around his mouth deepened while he looked at Mariana.“I didn’t know everything, Nico. You know he never allowed us to visit.” Mariana stepped away from Zane who went to sit down with Anthony by his side. Anthony put a comforting hand on Zane’s thigh and Zane covered his hand with his own.Mariana reached for Nico. He made no move to go forward. “I never wanted to give
DARINAWhat was taking so long? “I can’t stand it anymore. They should have been here already, Sanda. Something’s wrong.” I was in panic mode, pacing around the living room.“Slow down, my love. Nico won’t let himself get caught. You’re making yourself ill.” Sanda smiled serenely back at me, lounging on the couch.“I don’t know how you can just sit there so calmly. We should have gone with Zane.”“Darina,” Mama came into the living room with Daciana on her hip. “Is Lycas with you, because I can’t find him.” Daciana held onto Mama’s neck with her little fist in her mouth, giggling at us.That boy would be the death of me. “I left him in the playpen together with his sister, Mama.” He must have transformed again. I sighed. Using the mind link, I sent out messages to the pack to help find my small wolf cub. “I have a mind to spank his little behind.” I said, storming to the front door.“Boys will be boys.” Sanda laughed. “He’ll turn up when he’s hungry.”“Someone lost a pup?” Nico filled
“Can everyone just calm the hell down!” I glared at Zane and Sanda. My grip on Darina tightened as I held her around her waist with her back to me, hiding my erection. She didn’t struggle but leaned back against me ever so slightly. “I get it, you are mad at me. I fucked up. Maybe.”That earned me a snort from Sanda and Zane’s eyebrows raised a few inches. He stood with his arms folded across his broad chest and I knew from the look in his eyes he was considering breaking a few bones.“But as soon as the dust settles and we’re all back at Romania, we can go on with our lives. Just like you wanted. No more humans trying to get us killed or wanting to use our pups for lab rats. No more Mafia. Okay?” By the gods! What more did they want from me?Sanda came towards me. “Idiot.” Her hands on her hips, she glared at me, “You should have trusted us.”“Sanda’s right.” Darina wriggled her way out of my grasp. “That’s not how you treat us, your mates. We don’t keep secrets from you.” She went t
NICOA few days earlierJohn wasn’t kidding. That blast knocked the shit out of me, also, burned off my clothes. I guess I should have moved further away before I pressed the button. Then I heard Sanda scream, and it took all of my willpower to stop the wolf from rushing back to comfort her.Our mate was in anguish, and he fought me with everything he had to go there. She was crying, screaming my name. I dug my nails into the earth and clamped my jaw shut not to cry out. The wolf turned his back on me in disgust. We’ll go back when it’s dark, hide in the stables. I tried to placate him, but he huffed and turned away. My blood turned to ice when I heard the men screaming for Darina to stop. Oh, no! She ran towards the burning wreck! That was when the wolf took over. There was nothing holding him back. He rushed towards the blaze, but the heat was too much. Whining he backpedaled. But then Sanda came, and I heard her say that no one could survive that. I reigned the wolf in hard. Patie
The day of Nico’s funeral came, the day all of us dreaded. Zane, silent as a ghost, moved about the mansion, looking but not seeing, touching things but not feeling. I had no words for him. Because I felt the same. Mama knew better not to touch me or look at me with pity. She only did that once and I snapped at her. I needed to be strong for my babies and for Sanda. She needed me more than ever. More than once I found her in the bathroom, hiding in a corner, crying. I’ve never seen my dear one so broken.“What makes it so hard for me, is that I could do nothing to protect you or Nico.” She said through her tears, “I’ve failed both of you.”I took her into my arms and stroked her tear-streaked face. “Nonsense. Stop this. If we have to blame someone, blame Nico. His arrogance got him killed. Nothing else.” I kissed her trembling lips, closing my eyes, because I didn’t want her to see how deep the hurt was that I felt.So many cars, so many people coming to his send off. All of his assoc
DARINAMen running, women screaming and above them all I heard Sanda’s voice lifting into a howl. I crushed the twins to my chest, wide-eyed and terrified. My legs wanted to run, to see what was happening, but my brain refused to cooperate.Katherina ran to me, clutching her belly. “Darina! Oh, my God!” She fell down at my feet, sobbing.I was frozen like a statue with the twins in my arms. They cried just as hard as Katherina. She looked up at me. “His car… oh, my God, his car…”Something snapped into place in my brain. “Whose car?” Nico and Sal went out early that morning. I put the twins down next to Katherina and my legs carried me out of the house. When I saw the inferno in front of me, I sank boneless to the ground. “No. No. No.” I couldn’t believe it. Not Nico. Not my mate.Sanda ran to me, her face contorted with anguish. “Darina, he’s in there. We have to get him out.” She screamed at me, but my ears refused to hear.“It can’t be. No.” I clawed at the earth beneath me. Sanda
NICOHours earlier“Are you sure about this, Boss? I mean, why do this now when everything is going so well? We’ve destroyed our enemies and we have control over the city once more.” Sal tried his best to convince me to discard my plans. Although he did everything I asked him to do, he wasn’t happy about it. Which was fine by me, he didn’t have to like it.The meeting with my associates went well. Business was picking up and the money rolled in. Problems with the cops and the feds were minor. Most of them could be bought, it was just a matter of the right price.Sal and I were having lunch at a bar in London, going over the plans for my death.I touched Sal’s shoulder. “Yes, Salvatore. I am doing this for my mates and my pups. Zane is right, I don’t want this life for my children.” I twirled the glass in my hand, staring at the golden liquid. Besides, I owed it to my pack because of all the trouble I caused.“But you lived for this, for our business.” Sal groaned, “I can’t do this wit
DARINA I can’t believe the arrogance of this man! Acting like he is invincible or immortal for that matter. Sanda followed Nico around like a watchdog, she never says it, but I know she loves him with every fiber in her body, just like I do. Thank the gods for the twins, because I would lose my mind worrying about Nico and our safety.“He just received another threat, I heard when he answered his cellphone.” Sanda came into the nursery where I had just bathed the twins and put them in their cribs. “The voice was disguised, like they used some kind of machine.” She plopped herself down onto the rocking chair, holding Daciana’s pink unicorn on her lap.My hands stilled on the clothes I folded. “Sanda, if you continue trying to be his bodyguard, you’ll make yourself sick. If anything should happen, there’s not much we can do about it, is there?” I made my voice sound casual, but my stomach clenched with anxiety. She glared at me like I was crazy. “Don’t patronize me! You’re just as worr
“You have officially lost your mind.” Salvatore spat out his cigarette. “What the fuck’s wrong with you, Nico?”“Lower your goddamn voice.” I growled at him and pulled him after me down the steps. “I don’t want the girls to hear us.”He pulled his arm out of my grasp. “Well, I think they should. Talk some sense into your…”“Salvatore!” I let my Alpha aura wash over him and he submitted at once, dipping his head in deference. “Let’s take a walk to the stables.”He followed me, silenced by my authority. It started to rain, and I lifted my face to the cold, grey sky. I would miss this place. This was the first place where I felt I belonged.Sal drew his hand through his dark mop of hair. “Please tell me you’re not serious.”“Dead serious. I want to fake my death. But it must look believable.” I went into the stables, inhaling the warm scent of hay and horses. There was no way I was going to leave my horse here.Salvatore looked at me as if I had grown horns. “How the hell do you expect m
