Chapter Two

Lizzie took my hand and pulled me towards the bonfire.  The pack town was beautiful.  There were many houses – the pack was rather large. The town itself had many shops, restaurants, a café, and other types of businesses. The pack land was expansive and many of the stores and businesses in the neighboring human town were also owned by Alpha Callan and the pack. I had only ventured into the pack town a few times since coming to stay with Lizzie.  Most of the time, I just went school and came back home. With just a few days left in school, I was just hoping to finish without any more problems.

The large field located behind the pack house was the perfect place for the bonfire. The setting was beautiful.  The clearing was surrounded by trees on three sides and a steep hill on the fourth side. I had never come to the pack house so I didn’t realize how much forest surrounded this part of the town. Lizzie’s house was on the far other end of town and opened more to fields.  I kicked myself for not coming this way sooner.  Lela would love to go for a run. The trees seemed to offer plenty of cover.

There were many more people in attendance than I had expected.  The Red Moon Pack was large, and it seemed like half the pack was here.  I could smell food cooking and despite having eaten dinner, my stomach growled.

Lizzie squealed as a handsome young wolf approached us. “Raina, this is my boyfriend, Alex.”

I smiled politely and waved at Alex. “Hi, nice to meet you”. Despite having lived with Lizzie for a few months, I have not yet her boyfriend. I had wanted to me him,  but Lizzie understood that I needed time to adjust and try to finish school. I was also convinced that they were just together to have sex. Never confirmed, but it was just my hunch based on things Lizzie had said to me. While I didn’t care, I didn’t enjoy the snarky comments Lela always had when Lizzie talked about her relationship with Alex.

Alex smiled back and then turned to Lizzie. “Come here you” he said as he picked her up, pulling her close in to kiss her.

Turning away to leave the two lovebirds have some time together, I head over to the food tables. I grabbed a cookie from the table and headed towards the drinks.  As werewolves, we can consume alcohol in quite large quantities and not get drunk.  We could definitely feel tipsy but getting drunk was almost unheard of because of the amount of alcohol one would have to drink. Seeing as this was my first time meeting most of the pack, I decided that a beer would probably help calm my nerves.

I wandered off to the side and just observed everyone. People watching has always been a hobby of mine. I learned a lot about human behavior that way. There were many traditions in the human world that were not as common in the wolf pack. Understanding this made it easier to fit in with humans, especially when you work and go to school with them.

Several people came up and introduced themselves. I enjoyed small talk and met some very nice people. A girl by the name of Joy had stayed longer than others and talked, a lot.  Joy was friendly and it was enjoyable to talk with her. Joy was filling me in on different aspects of the pack and different people in the pack, including who was good to possibly date and who to avoid.  She also told me about Alpha Callan. He was gone currently, visiting another pack but was supposed to return in a few days. Her description of him was pretty similar to what Lizzie had told me earlier.

“That tall blonde over there is Joseph. I would avoid him.  He tends to go through girlfriends quickly. I speak from experience.” She shook her head as she spoke, clearly still feeling the effects of the relationship gone bad with Joseph.

I finished off my beer and grabbed another one and another cookie and headed back over to Joy. She nodded over to a guy who looked to be about my age standing off to the side.

“That guy is Nathan. Him and his family left the pack when his grandparents became ill to help take care of them.  They never left the pack so when they came back four months ago, Alpha Callan gladly welcomed them back.”

I look over at Nathan. “I doubt he is our mate but he is good to look at.” Lela chimed in. I smirked at her comment, happy that she might be coming around a bit to the idea of dating.

“Lela, really? I thought you were all about waiting for our mate?” I berate her kiddingly.

“I know. I know. But damn Raina! Look at him! How is he just standing there all by himself when he looks like that!”

Lela wasn’t wrong. While this pack seemed to have more than a few good-looking guys and girls, Nathan seemed to exude sexy.  His chestnut brown hair was short on the sides but a bit longer on top. His hard jaw line and steel gray eyes gave him a firm but mysterious look. His short sleeve shirt was tight and revealed nearly every muscle in his biceps and chest.

I found myself getting lost looking at him when Joy snapped me from my trance.  “Raina, Nathan is coming over here!” She whispered yelled to me and I pulled myself out of my fantasy.

“Hi Joy.  Who is your friend here? I haven’t seen her around before.” His voice was deep and soothing.

“I’m Raina. And you are?”

“Nathan.  I haven’t seen you at any of the bonfires before.” He looks at me intently, almost to the point of making me feel uncomfortable with his stare.  While he was gorgeous, I could not pinpoint exactly what, but something made me slightly uneasy.  Perhaps him being so forward?

“I have been here about two months.  Just trying to make up for missing the first part of the school year so I can finish up and graduate this year. I don’t really get out much.” I shrugged. Determined to not be intimidated by another guy, I maintained eye contact. In my old pack, whenever I did date, I always felt a bit timid around guys. I wasn’t shy, but I felt easily overwhelmed whenever a guy would hit on me. I wanted this new pack to be a fresh start for me. “What about you? Joy mentioned that you and your family just came back to the pack”.

He seemed a bit surprised by my question, judging by his reaction. “My family moved back here a few months ago.  My grandfather was sick, so we went out to take care of him and my grandmother. We were gone a few years. After my grandfather died, we decided to move back here with my grandmother”. He appeared somber as he spoke.

“I am sorry to hear about your grandfather”. Sympathy poured through me, as I understood the significant emotions that came from losing a close family member.

Being a bit bold, and wanting to show my sympathy,  I put my hand on his arm as I spoke to him. His skin was warm to touch and I could feel the muscles, even in his forearm. I pulled my hand away before I let it linger too long and show how truly awkward I could be. I wanted to convey caring, not appear to be some socially inept wolf.

Nathan seemed to shiver slightly at my touch. “What about you? Where did you come from?”

Wanting to avoid the long, painful discussion, I gave him the abbreviated version of events that happened. “A large group of rogues attacked my old pack last year. My mom and dad were killed. My brother was lost. I tried to stay and help rebuild but too many lives here lost. I came here about two months ago to live with Lizzie and her family. Lizzie’s mom was my mom’s best friend.” I cut myself off to avoid becoming too upset by the conversation.

“Wow, I am sorry Raina. That is terrible.  Did they ever figure out why the rogues attacked? I have never heard of such a large group of rogues attacking.” Nathan had moved closer to me as he spoke.  He looked intently into my eyes, making me feel as if he truly cared about what I had to say.  Or maybe I was just reading too much in to it.

“Our Alpha survived and tried to find out the reason behind the attack. Another pack sent out trackers and was able to track down one of the rogues involved in the attack. The only information they could obtain was that they were after something.  They would have been paid well if they brought it back.  But they never were able to find out what that was.” I shivered slightly as I spoke.  The night air had turned a bit cool and recounting the events from a year ago added to the shiver.

“Here, take my sweatshirt.” Nathan said as he handed me his zip up sweatshirt.

I pulled it on and inhaled his scent.  The scent was earthy, an oak and citrus combination. It gave me a comforting feeling. “Thanks” I stammer out, after I realized that I probably looked like an idiot smelling his sweatshirt.

“No problem.  So, I was wondering…” but before Nathan could finish, he was cut off.

“Raina, I am Beta Jack. Alpha Callan wanted me to reach out to you.  He is currently away visiting another pack, but he would like to meet with you when he returns.  He has been very patient with allowing you to visit, but if you are going to stay, he would like to discuss you joining the pack. He is expected back later tomorrow evening.  Please plan on visiting him Sunday afternoon around 1.”  The Beta looked serious - all business.  I wondered if he is always like that. His chestnut skin magnified his golden color eyes. His eyes were so intriguing.  I had never seen a color of eyes like that.

“Sure, thanks Beta.  I will be there.” I stumbled out the words and looked down.  The man was beyond intimidating.  If this was the Beta, I hated to see what meeting the Alpha was going to be like!

I looked over at Joy and Nathan. “I should probably get going.  I am getting tired and I still have to find Lizzie before heading home.”

Joy pulled me in for a hug. “I loved meeting you, Raina.  Call me this weekend and we will get together again”.  She bounded away quickly, leaving just me and Nathan standing together.

“I can walk you home if you would like. I think I saw Lizzie and her boyfriend heading to the woods about a half hour ago. There is no telling how long they will be.” Nathan shrugged as he spoke. He had a sweet look on his face and I decided to let him walk me home.

“And maybe if we are lucky, we will get a kiss at the end of the walk,” I say to Lela.

“Hmmm, maybe. But not sex until mate.” Lela states firmly.

“We already had this conversation a hundred times. I know how you feel. You know how I feel. My virginity is staying safely in place until we meet our mate. But in the meantime, you and I both know that there are a lot of other fun things to do besides that.”

“That there are,” Lela purrs in my head. When I turned 16, I developed a pretty strong sexual desire. While I never did anything with just anyone, I did enjoy my time or two with a boyfriend.  Not having one for so long had definitely left me with many desires. My mom said that this was probably due to my red wolf.  What is known about red wolves is mostly legend. My mom always told me that I may get some sort of “magical” power, but outside of feeling nearly all emotions intensely, I wasn’t sure I had anything “magical”.  I hated that I hadn’t learned more about that before she died. Everything was secretive about the red wolf and I felt like I should know more than I did.

“Sure, let’s go,” I said to Nathan.

He put his hand on the small of my back and led me through the crowd.  A deep growl came from somewhere in the crowd, but I was unable to find where it came from. No one else seemed to notice.

‘Any idea what that was?’ I reach out to Lela.

‘I think it came from a she-wolf, but I can’t pick out which one.’ Lela appeared as befuddled as I was about where the growl came from. ‘But I definitely feel like it was directed at us’

I decided to leave it and kept walking with Nathan.

We walked in silence for some time. As we walked, I felt Nathan move his hand up my arm, and he put his arm around my shoulders. Deciding to avoid my natural instinct of pulling away, I placed my head against his chest as we walked. It had been so long since anyone had really touched me.  Lizzie hugged me all the time, but hers were either when she was excited or when she was comforting me.

The touch from Nathan was different. I enjoyed it. It made me feel close to someone in a different way, like I wanted him to touch more of me. I couldn’t tell if that feeling came from the fact that it had been so long since a boy touched me or if it was something else. It spiked some waves of desire in me and I savored the feeling.

As we came upon Lizzie’s house, I could see that Anne had left the front porch light on for us. I didn’t know when Lizzie would be home, but I appreciated it being left on, as it was already well past 10 and it was quite dark out.

Several feet from the front door and still in the shadows of darkness, Nathan pulled me to face him.

“I enjoyed spending time with you tonight, Raina.  I hope that we can see each other again.” He looked me in the eyes as he said it, and I could see specks of black swirling in his eyes as he spoke. The grey color of his eyes with the black specks was a beautiful combination.

He started to pull me in for a hug but I wanted more.  I look up at him and pulled him in for a kiss. I clearly took him by surprise, as his mouth was somewhat rigid at first. Determined to get more than just rigid lips from the kiss, I let the kiss linger until his mouth relaxed and he kissed me back. I toyed with the idea of pushing my tongue into his mouth, but determined that could wait for another day.  The last thing I needed to do was to move too fast too quickly.

“Why don’t you stop by tomorrow?” I said to Nathan as I stepped back. He clearly wasn’t expecting the kiss, but the look on his face indicated that he enjoyed it.

“Sure, that sounds great.” Nathan stammered a bit as he spoke and I could sense the sexual excitation coming off of him.

I headed in the house and close the door.  Did I really just do that?

I’m thinking the rogue attack was because of her! She is an unique wolf so they probably want her which is also why her old pack alpha told her to shift only when alone

I made my way to bed, still thinking about how bold I was with Nathan. Despite feeling sexual arousal more often than I probably should have, I never did anything like that. I was never so forthcoming. I typically tried to control all of my emotions and have become quite well at it. I have to be, else I would be an emotional mess all the time. Most emotions I could control, but those on the extremes were much harder. The grief over the last year, for example, had been extremely difficult. If I didn’t use some sort of emotional control techniques, I would literally be a tornado of emotions all the time. Think of a moody teenager but on steroids. It would not be a pretty picture.I took a deep breath as I shut the door. I enjoyed the kiss greatly, as it had been far too long since I have kissed anyone, and I can feel the waves of desire coursing through my body. With everything that was going on, having any type of contact with someone of the opposite sex was not som

I awaken before 6 AM, slightly disappointed that no dreams about Nathan found their way to me during my slumber. Probably for the best anyway. Stretching and getting out of bed, I didn’t bother changing as I sat down at my desk to continue to work. I had three projects left to finish and I was hopeful to get them done this morning. After that, only finals would remain for my last three classes.I closed my laptop after finishing the last of my three projects. I stretched and rubbed my eyes. Looking at my phone, I realize I had been working for nearly six hours.“Your school work is so boring.” Lela whined.“I know, but you know how important it is for me to get this done.” I stand and stretch again, feeling a bit sore from the activities from last night. I shake my head, trying to get the thoughts out of my head.“Didn’t you invite Nathan to come back over?” Lela asked, sending images of the thin

I couldn’t really argue with Lela. In my old pack, I had to be very careful with shifting. I typically did it alone. Mom was always so concerned about others seeing a red wolf. She never really explained why, but she always insisted. I was able to run with my brother so long as he ran through the forest first. I did get out on my own a few times, but I always kept to myself. I haven’t let Lela go for a run since we arrived here. A run could help clear my mind and get rid of some of the leftover emotions that were nagging me. “We need to get to the forest line first, but let’s go.” I started off, walking along the open field towards the back of the houses. Although there was some wooded space behind the houses, the trees were not thick enough for me to feel safe shifting. Lela and I keep bantering back and forth. After I lost my family, Lela was my companion. Wolves were always our companion, but Lela’s support helped pull me through the da

RAINA’S POV I woke up early and decided to go for a walk around town. After seeing all that the town has to offer during the bonfire, I wanted to explore a bit more. I didn’t expect anything to be open – it was only 6:00, and I knew it would be quiet. The streets were pretty much empty as I walked along around the various shops and storefronts. I berated myself again for not coming to see this area sooner. I had considered getting a parttime job and this area would be perfect for that. I noticed a coffee shop open and decided to go in and get some coffee. The shop was quaint. As I entered, I noticed there were a few tables on the inside as well as a few on the walk outside the shop. The décor on the inside had a farmhouse feel. I approached the counter to order and noticed that Joy was working. “Raina! What are you doing up so early?” Joy asked, appearing to be much too bubbly for it being this early in the morning. “I guess I am

I stopped, halfway off my chair, and stared at him.“It was him!” Lela was practically yelling in my head. A feeling of anxiety and tension ran through me and I sat back down in the chair.“I take it that was you who was out by the creek with us last night?” I asked, still maintaining the eye contact. I felt my breathing increase slightly, unsure of if I was about to get in trouble for being out in the forest. Some packs have rules about this.“Yes, it was. Your wolf is beautiful. I have never seen a red wolf before and Rollo and I were so fascinated by her. We just had to see.” Alpha Callan seems almost surprised by what he said, making him briefly break eye contact.I could feel my cheeks flush as he spoke. My heart rate climbed. I have never had anyone compliment Lela before. “Thank you. Unfortunately, Lela isn’t able to get out as much as either of us would like. My mother always told me that a red

RAINA POVI spent the next several days cramming for and taking finals. After submitting all my make up projects for the first semester on Monday, the rest of the week was spent studying way too late and taking finals. I was almost done and looked forward to putting this chapter of my life behind me.I sat in my last class, finishing up my last final. Why did I have to take calculus? I didn’t need it. I didn’t even want it. But my dad had convinced me to take it. Even though I could have taken another, much easier, math class, I couldn’t. My dad had faith in me, and I couldn’t let him down.I glanced over my answers one last time and double checked the math on a few of the problems.‘I don’t think it can get any better than this,’ I said to Lela.‘You know very well I can’t help you with any of that,’ Lela replied, clearly rolling her eyes in response to my statement.

Nathan pulled me against his chest. I fell asleep, lying in Nathan’s arms. I had wanted to return the favor, but Nathan could sense my exhaustion and pulled me against his chest without any complaints. I felt comfortable like this and easily fell asleep in my pleasure-filled state. Sleep came easily. It seemed as if I began dreaming as soon as my eyes closed. I wish it was a dream, but it was more like a nightmare.I walked along the forest line behind the packhouse of my old pack. The weather was cold and rainy. As I moved forward, I could hear the howls of wolves coming toward me through the forest. And then the scent hit me – rogues. I turned towards the packhouse and attempted to run but I couldn’t move. I tried to bring Lela forward but I couldn’t find her. I began to panic and yell but no words left my mouth. The rogues ran past me, not stopping at me. It is almost as if they could not see me. I spent the rest of the day trying to forget about what happened the day before, both the nightmare and what happened with Nathan. I would be lying to say that I didn’t enjoy what happened with Nathan. My body had responded to his touch in ways that it had never responded to anyone. Though I had sexual encounters before, I never had one that was so intense and involved so much lust and desire. The vigor of my arousal so quickly had surprised me, and I was not prepared to handle that much emotion and physical response. Something was different about the interaction with Nathan. I wasn’t sure if it was because it had been so long since someone else had touched me with so much desire or if something within me had changed.Thankfully, Lela and I agreed that we needed to be more careful with Nathan. Nathan was not set on waiting for or even finding his mate. Since his parents were not mates, and his dad purposefully avoided finding his mate, Nathan had a different

10 years later“Anders! Get back in here! Your mom told you dinner was almost ready five minutes ago!” Callan yelled out the back door, before giving up and going out to the backyard. I laughed as Callan fought to round up our son. From what Catherine told me, Anders was just like Callan was when he was young; stubborn, strong, and, at times, apparently hard of hearing. I had called him in several times alerting him of dinner, but he continued to run around the field behind the packhouse. At nearly ten years old, Anders was already showing his power and strength. He took after Callan in both behavior and looks, although he had my green eyes. Callan was often proud of his behavior while I was stuck running around trying to wrangle him in. His sister, Romy, was the opposite. At age 7, she was calm and controlled. She was empathic and caring. I didn’t expect her to be a red wolf and I doubted that she would be. At this point, there were six red wo

Two weeks laterLela was antsy. She wouldn’t stop pacing. I thought at first that it was related to the two weeks of recovery for Callan finally being up. But even after he woke up this morning and joined me in the shower, making sure that I knew that he was more than recovered, she still would not settle down. I know that my sexual frustration went away and down the drain twice this morning, but Lela still had this weird nervous energy about her. It was very uncharacteristic.‘Lela, what the heck is going on?’ I reached out to her, hoping that we could figure all this out. Her anxiety was rubbing off on me and I did not like the way it felt. I suddenly regretted all the times my emotions were overwhelming and bled in to how Lela was feeling. And that happened A LOT.‘I honestly don’t know what it is. Different pack members would come to visit, bringing me food and to keep me company. It had become almost routine at this point. Beta Jack and Marta would come first thing in the morning, bringing me breakfast. Beta Jack would stay and keep me company, updating me on anything relevant to pack business. Nathan and Jennifer would come at lunch time. Catherine would come with another pack member who had made me dinner. Justin would typically stop by after dinner and would stay with Callan while I went to shower and change. And the day would begin again. At the end of day eight, exhaustion was starting to set in. RAINA’s POVLela made it back to the pack in less than a minute. I did not even know that we could run that quickly, but fear can make you run quickly. While fear often drives you away from things, this fear drove me to Callan. Fear and anger. Callan was hurt and I was not going to just stand by and do nothing.Another pang of pain ran through me, but I refused to stop, despite how searing the pain was.‘Do you know where he is?’ I asked Lela as we approached the edge of pack territory.‘By our clearing.’ She responded. There was a certain irony in Callan being in the clearing that I had found so much comfort in. The amount of pain that I was in told me that Callan was severely injured. We would not stop until we were upon him. Brett and Emma were right behind me, keeping pace with Lela for the sprint to Callan. As soon as I hit the edge of the clearing, I saw Callan on the ground, and I immediately shifted back. One o

I tried to focus on the clock in the car, and, although it was blurry, I could just make out that it was 9:15 PM. “Looks like someone is awake.” A voice said from the front seat of the car. My head was throbbing, but I was awake and looking around, trying to get some understanding of where I was. However, there were just trees everywhere, so I really couldn’t pick up on anything. As the meeting wrapped up, the councilmen asked that each pack approach Callan to discuss planning, including when the warrior would be coming to our pack and how we would accommodate them. A few of the smaller packs were not able to send a warrior due to safety concerns, which made sense. One pack was a quarter of the size of our pack ad had lost several warriors in a recent rogue attack. It would be more dangerous for them to send a warrior for their pack. Not only would I have the guardian warriors protecting me, but I also have my own pack. It was important that we considered the other packs in the discussion, especially since I truly did have so much protection.“Luna Raina, Alpha Callan, I am so glad that you are so understanding. RAINA’S POVThe meeting room was stuffy and crowded. I could see at least 15 different packs represented at the meeting, if not more. Callan had filled me in on some basics about the different Alphas, including Alpha Brock and Alpha Scott, whom I had just met. Alpha Scott seemed nice but Alpha Brock was a prick. I could tell from the brief interaction I had with him. Callan also told me that there were 20 different packs spread across the U.S., although there were currently only 19 since no one had taken over for Alpha Thomas. Much to my surprise, there were apparently some pack members who had stayed behind. The Council sat along a long table at the front of the room on a raised area. Ten men sat along the table. As Callan walked us to our seats, I looked at each of them. While I wasn’t specifically trying to read the emotions of any of them, I was struck by the different emotions that some of them seemed to be experiencing. Most just seemed interested, ey

ALPHA CALLAN POVI was surprised when I slept until 5. I had really expected sleep to elude me with the meeting with the Council today. In anticipation of things such as this, Rollo typically was up early, as he was on high alert. ‘Decided to let me sleep?’ I joked to Rollo.‘I needed the sleep. I am still exhausted from the other day.’ Rollo stirred and stretched.I could only laugh, as I, too, was still feeling a bit of the exhaustion from the other day. But we needed our energy for today. It was clear that this was going to be a long day. I hadn’t meant to upset Raina yesterday, but I did have a feeling that the Council or someone at the meeting might ask for her to “prove” that she was a red wolf. It was ridiculous and I agreed with Raina about her concerns. If she didn’t want to shift or show them anything, then I would 100% support that. Quite frankly, it was ridiculous that they would even ask,
