Chapter 5 - Faces from the Past

last update Last Updated: 2023-02-23 11:03:46

Ardal

As I walk through the doors of GAINZ, every pair of male eyes turn toward me. I feel their burn against my skin, but keep my chin high and head clear as I move through the fitness center.

It’s my first day of work and I want to be as professional as possible. I won’t let a little attention shake me - doing my best at my job is what matters.

As I continue to walk, I take in my room around me, noticing how much nicer it is than the last gym I worked in. GAINZ has top of the line equipment and is clean top to bottom.

However, as my eyes continue to scan the space, they eventually catch on a familiar face - one that makes my stomach nearly drop.

Standing off to the side…is Susan. I hadn’t expected to see her here, which only causes my dread to grow. Only, the sensation gets worse as I notice her outfit. She’s wearing the same jacket as the other staff member’s wear - indicating that she also works here.

I kick myself as I realize it, wishing I would have looked up the GAINZ staff team ahead of time. Having Susan on the team makes this less than ideal - in fact, it’s a nightmare. But I need this job.

Susan still hasn’t noticed me, allowing me to study her more. As much as I hate to admit it, she’s gorgeous - maybe now more than ever. Her blonde hair shines brightly, her skin is radiant, and her figure is impeccable.

It always was, though. Susan always managed to gain the attention of nearby men, which played a huge part in my own painful past. And right now, she’s standing next to an extremely attractive man. Only, his eyes are not on her.

They’re on me.

I notice it then - how Susan frowns due to his strayed focus. It causes her own gaze to wander, her frown pressing deeper as she realizes everyone is looking in the same direction. Finally, her eyes move to do the same.

The second Susan’s stare is on me, I feel my skin prickle. Her eyes widen immediately, her lips falling open. I fear that she may recognize me, but I need to make sure she doesn’t.

I’ve already done as much as I can. I look wildly different after all the changes to my physique, and how I dress and carry myself. I can tell Susan notices the differences too as she begins to study me, scanning me from head to toe.

Her features turn skeptical - as if she recognizes me, but she’s uncertain. Still, I remain calm under her gaze, not letting my guard down. That’s when I see her shoulders relax a little, her lips beginning to move as if she intends to speak to me.

However, I turn away from her, ignoring her completely - not interested in anything she has to say. Instead, I need to and figure out where to go next. Only, I can see from my peripheral how Susan stomps her foot, clearly not pleased with my cold shoulder.

But I don’t care about her little tantrum. Not when I hear another voice far behind me, aimed in my direction.

“That’s her! The sexy stunner I was telling you about! What a coincidence.”

I know that voice - it’s Mateo. I can’t believe he’s here too, but his sudden appearance immediately makes me want to rush out of the room. Only,  my back tightens instead and I find I’m unable to move. My reaction only becomes worse when I notice Susan still coming toward me, making me wonder what she wants.

I’m sure she’s about to yell at me, but she catches me off guard when she finally reaches me. Instead of scolding me, she makes me jump when she’s suddenly throwing herself at my feet, crying out as she hits the floor.

“You pushed me!” she whines.

I’m gaping at her, appalled by the stunt she’s just pulled. It has been years and this woman is still pulling the same childish tricks. Now I want to snap at her, but I’m incapable of trying as I hear people rushing toward us.

“My stomach,” Susan continues to cry, holding herself. “It hurts.”

Finally, people reach us, causing me to glance up from the woman. However, as I spot one of the men at my side, my mouth falls wide open.

“What the fuck did you do to my girlfriend?”

Kadeem…Kadeem is standing right in front of me. It’s like facing a ghost and I’m too stunned to reply.

“Don’t blame her, Kadeem,” Susan says weakly.

But Kadeem does not calm down. “She’s pregnant,” he clips out, making me nearly gasp. “You may have just hurt the baby!”

Pregnant…Susan is pregnant?

I’m filled with utter shock at the news, leaving me at a disadvantage as I stare right into Kadeem’s furious face.

“Kadeem,” Susan tries again.

Only, he ignored her attempts again. But this time it’s not because he wants to voice his anger - instead, he stops to stare at me more, his eyes searching my face. I fear he may recognize me, but soon his eyes turn away and he proves that he doesn’t.

I breathe a silent sigh of relief. It seems my disguise is successful. It’s amazing what a little change to temperament and physique can do thanks to fitness. Plus, I’ve also altered my appearance with the help of makeup and different hairstyles.

Not to mention Jane, a perfume designer Julia introduced me to, who helped me hide my real scent. As a mother herself, we hit it off right away and she provided a lot of suggestions to turn me into basically a whole new person.

It’s certainly doing the job now as Kadeem doesn’t catch on to my identity. He treats me as a perfect stranger, and Susan seems to enjoy the fact as I catch her quick, smug smile before she hides it away again. Apparently, she’s not worried about me snatching up her boyfriend.

“Apologize,” Kadeem says then, sending daggers in my direction. “For pushing down my girlfriend.”

That has me almost scoffing, but I hold it in as I remain calm.

“I don’t need to apologize,” I state boldly. “Because I never pushed her.”

I’m not going to let Susan take advantage of me with these tricks anymore - I won’t play into her little games. She’s already hurt me enough once.

“You’re trying to blame me for something I didn’t do,” I state. “And on my first day of work.”

“First day?” Kadeem asks, studying me.

“Yes. I’m the new senior fitness trainer - Chelsea Quinn,” I inform them, using my fake name.

“What!?” Susan calls out, shocked. “That’s impossible! You can’t be Chelsea Quinn. You’re a fake!”

From there, Susan begins to turn toward the side of the room, waving and gaining the attention of the security guard as she plans to throw me out.

“You can’t just claim to be Chelsea Quinn,” she snaps as the men come closer. “She’s famous - widely known in the fitness community.”

“I am Chelsea Quinn,” I insist harshly, glaring at the security guards as they gather around. “I can prove it.”

I have my identification right in my bag - the set that I had made to show my new name. I’m just about to get it out when Susan’s voice stops me.

“Chelsea won the championship at the last Golden Night Bodybuilding Competition,” she states coldly. “If you’re Chelsea then show us the medal. If you can’t - then you’re clearly a fake!”

ArdalThis is ridiculous. I can’t believe that Susan is really trying to test my identity by having me flash some little prize. However, I know she’s just trying to trip me up, figuring that I’m incapable of producing the medal. But this isn’t the worst stunt Susan has ever pulled. I know she’s capable of so much worse, which causes me to sigh.“So if I can prove that I’m Chelsea by showing the medal…then you’ll apologize?” I ask, scowling at Susan. She’s offering another game. However, I won’t let her get the best of me. ArdalI know it was too good to be true that I could convince Kadeem of Susan’s lies. As I said, he’s still completely lovesick, and he only proved my point as he effortlessly picks her up.“I’m taking her to the hospital,” Kadeem announces harshly as he carries her away. All I can do is shake my head as I watch him go.Pathetic.“Sorry about Kadeem,” a voice says from my side, causing me to turn. I only want to sigh as I see it’s Mateo - I’d nearly forgotten that he was here.“I know his behavior was ungentlemanly. But I promise - he’s a very nice boss,” Mateo tells me.I doubt that, I think.“So you’re Chelsea Quinn,” Mateo continues, flashing a smile. “No wonder you didn’t want to tell me your name before. Probably didn’t want to attract attention.”“Sure,” I tell him flatly. That’s definitely not the reason, but I’ll let him believe whatever he wants.“Your work is very impressive,” he replies. “Would you mind if we swap business cards? Just in case I need some training?”As much

ErbaoThe quintuplets quickly set their plan in motion, using the computer again so they could find any information about the man in the photos. And it was an easy task, seeing as the man was very well-known within the pack. The babies sat stunned as they discovered just who he was. Apparently, his name was Kadeem, and he was the Alpha of the Red Moon pack. They found many articles about their daddy’s family business and the countless followers he had.“Our daddy’s famous!” Lottie declared, squealing as Erbao finished trying to read an article aloud.“And so is mommy, remember?” Silas said with excitement. “Both of our parents are important!”Once more, the quintuplets began to rejoice at the news, causing them to squirm and laugh with joy. However, Erbao soon shushed them, pointing toward a photo of their father as he held determination in his eyes.“We need to find a way to get to him,” Erbao announced then, causing a few others to nod. However, Ezra seemed a little skeptical. “How?

ArdalDue to Susan’s recent “offense,” I’ve been called in to meet with Kadeem. Everything in me had hoped I could keep a distance from him, but it appears that’s not going to happen as I’m sitting right across from him now.We stare at each other in silence for a moment, both of us glowering for our own personal reasons. It makes the air in the room feel electric as neither of us choose to back down, though I assume that’s what Kadeem is waiting for. I only wish he’d speak already so I could get this meeting over with, but apparently, he’s choosing to be stubborn.“So what? Am I fired or something?” I finally ask, wondering if Kadeem has pulled some strings to dismiss my position. Due to his love for Susan, it wouldn’t surprise me. Plus, he’s the Alpha of the Red Moon pack, which means he can make anyone do whatever he wants - including having the gym fire me.“No,” Kadeem answers, impatience within his tone. I’m surprised by his answer, but I don’t show it as I realize there’s more

But I don’t allow them to smooth no matter how long he stares. In fact, my face doesn’t even change as I notice a shift in his gaze. It’s subtle, faint - but I swear I see something - something familiar. It almost looked like…arousal - a stare I’ve seen from Kadeem plenty of times. The suspicion causes only my stomach to turn sour as the look disappears, causing me to question if I’d actually seen it in the first place.Maybe I hadn’t. Yes, I must have been mistaken. Kadeem would never look at me that way again - I’m sure of it.“Alright,” Kadeem says finally with a breath. Only, he then stops to clear his throat, seeming to regain himself. Still, I remind myself that it’s not at my expense, believing he’s just caught off guard by my continued annoyance.I wait for him to continue, watching his every move as Kadeem pauses again, almost loo

Ardal I’m standing in front of James, watching his sneering face as he appears as if he wants to tear my head off. However, I try to keep my head high as I prepare to keep him busy by listing out the workout plan I’ve laid out. Already, I don’t react to his vicious stare as I begin to walk toward a machine, showing it off as I insist he tries it. His eyes watch my every move, and I swear I can practically feel Susan’s doing the same somewhere. James follows my request, walking closer as he heads for the machine. I almost feel my heart relax a little as I see him reach for a weight. But then my heart slams the front of my chest as his hand lunges out and firmly grasps my wrist instead. Holy Goddess - despite being out of shape he’s surprisingly fast. And strong. That discovery hits me hard as he still holds onto me, smiling menacingly as I turn to face him. “You’re a pretty little thing,” he breathes into my face, causing me to grimace. “I’d love to see what this body looks like

Kadeem Kadeem still threatened to smile as two of the babies sat in front of him as they snacked on the popsicles they’d been rewarded while waiting for the third to return from the bathroom. He watched them warmly, noticing how his staff also couldn’t stop fawning over them. Finally, a small voice could be heard as the third baby returned, accompanied by a member of the team. Kadeem glanced up to greet the boy, but his voice suddenly lodged in his throat as he blinked at the child’s face. It was the boy from the airport - the one who had stopped Kadeem right in his tracks. And just like that day, he couldn’t get over how similar they looked. It caused Kadeem to look back at the other children, noting the dark hair again - ravenous black like his own. And their eyes…all similar shades of green, yet only the boy’s exactly matched his. “Where are your parents?” Kadeem was compelled to ask, wanting to see what their mother and father looked like. “Mommy is working,” the baby with gl

Orange and yellow leaves dot the sidewalk outside of the pack headquarters where I huddle with the kids as we prepare for our next move. Despite the chill in the air, beads of sweat are dripping down the back of my neck. Thanks to Jack’s magic and a shit ton of luck, we left Sasha, Gabe, and the rest of our captors unconscious and tied up in Kadeem’s cabin. Jack stayed behind to help Riley before setting out to slay his mother. Talk about an Electra complex.I take a moment to catch my breath when the sounds of a growing commotion come from the Council building. Without warning, Erbao bolts off, charging up the concrete steps, his eyes blazing with determination.“HEY!” I belt out. Bob could have dozens of henchmen stationed inside. Worse, he could have already seized control of Red Moon.Erbao ignores me and his siblings rush after him. My heart is a race car, but my legs are still Jello from wolfsbane. All I can do is stumble after them as they burst through the doors of the crowded

The pack headquarters was in an ordinary brick building, tucked away right in the heart of the city. The activity was minimal, except for nights when the council met - usually on the full moon. Even then, it was never bustling. It was a seat of immense power, but it looked an awful lot like a local Elk’s Club.Today was different.Pack members, raw with emotion, gathered like storm clouds at the downtown HQ. As dawn broke, Council Elders fought to maintain control of the room, elbow-to-elbow with Weres demanding answers. The vampire attack had come without warning, had been brutal and swift. The enemy was fueled with a devastating strength, leaving many injuries and fatalities.Amidst all of the chaos, one question loomed over them all: Where was their Alpha? It was into this pressure cooker that Kadeem allowed himself to be dragged in by Bob.The room erupted at the sight of him. Even the stoic Council gasped in shock. Bob was barreling in Kadeem with a ruthless force - leather boots

On the ground nearby, Susan's tresses blow gently across her face, still staring lifelessly into the darkness ahead."Guess you've got it all figured out," Kadeem says quietly, almost eerily calm. His gaze shifts to Riley, who's lying unconscious on a bed of leaves. "But you forgot her.""Collateral damage," Bob shrugs. "I was planning on having her killed anyway. No way I can trust her."A low growl rumbles from Kadeem's throat. "No deal, then."Bob laughs. "If you think you have any kind of leverage over me, you're sadly mistaken. I've got more than enough to ensure your compliance, including your sweetie over there." He gestures lazily in my direction as he approaches Riley, still hovering somewhere between life and death."I'll give her a warrior's end," he says, staring down at her. "The Council will believe she died trying to stop you, trying to protect the pack."Nex
