““Whoa, whoa…” Hendric raised his hands as if to stop the invisible car from bashing into him while bewildered expression changed his facial features into something one could only greet with ‘hello, dumb-dumb’. “Excuse me?! What do you exactly mean by the ‘leader of the troops’? I would still outrank her, she would still answer to me, right?!” Hendric asked with anger.
“No, my son.” Corin responded, bracing himself for the chaos he expected to ensue after his next words. “She will answer to me and me alone. You will take my place in day to day governance of anything concerning the welfare of our people as well as political and economical development of our territory but our warriors with Shay as their commander will not answer to you. All the costs and allowances that are to be allocated to our military fund will be governed and appointed only with Shay’s blessing. Corin was now studying Hendric’s face, watching how a young spotless face was lining with creases faster than parched soil under ruthless midday sun. Much to Hendric’s disappointment, his anger did not dwindle Corin’s resolve. “You will work together to build the future. If you wish this Coven to strive, you are bound to respect one another as well as learn how to make decisions together. If one of you fails to do this, the whole coven will suffer for your negligence and pride.” The earth seemed to crumble under Hendric’s feet at these words as this was entirely irreconcilable with each and every plan he made for when he was given power, making him unleash all pent up rage, not caring any more of who sat beside them. “You. Have. No. Right!!” Hendric basically growled through teeth clenched so tight they were now making screeching sounds, his whole body shaking in anger. “Those troops owe their allegiance to the grandmaster,” Hendric said, drawing out the word ‘owe’ as if he owned them himself. “Who said they would follow a woman anyway?! Wait ‘till grandfather hears of this. He will not stand for this!!! You are going against the rules, you are giving half the people to a woman!!” Hendric spat in disgust. He had jumped out of his chair at this point, shouting at his father while shooting dirty looks at his sister, spit flying out of his mouth in an enviable radius, Shay thought to herself. Feelings of bewildered amusement and deep heartbreak for her own brother lashing out like this because of her were having their own fight within her heart, and Shay could not help remembering what she promised to her own mother as she was dying, poisoned, betrayed and beyond even Thea’s healing skills. Shay was only 11 months older than her brother but was ever the mature one. Enveloping her tiny darling daughter who just turned five a week ago with her warm arms, Mina tried to convey all the desperate heartbreak she felt for being forced to leave her children behind her in this plane, for being stripped of choice or help. Crying silently while her tears streamed painfully slow one by one onto Shay’s soft hair, she was trying to breathe into her daughter’s breaking spirit all the love she felt for her ever since she was born and all the love she was saving for each day yet to come, each day she so naively took for granted, believing she had a lifetime left to love her children, cherish them and teach them the ways of life and the ways of witches. She took all that for granted, she got careless and now she has to hug her children one last hug goodbye. The poison already worked its magic but it was no match for the heavy anguish of loss and the unfairness of it all that made it difficult for Mina to breathe. Knowing that her end is near, she whispered weakly into Shay’s ear: ”I love you so much my darling emerald rose. I always will…even my death will never change that. But you have to be strong…for you and for our dear boys. Your father’s heart will break beyond repair but he will pick up the broken pieces and do what he has to do and he’s got a coven to lead. But your brother is a rose bud that will grow thorns if not cared for properly. You have to take my place in your brother’s life. He is but a baby and he will need all the love and warmth he can get to grow up to be the beautiful boy he already is. A warmth that can come only from a woman’s heart…”, devoid of strength by that time shortness of breath took over Mina, making even whispering a challenge but she was determined to speak her truth. “I have seen it my love…you…you have to be there for him, you have to love him when others don’t. You have to be his voice of heart, a heart he will neglect over reason. He will be made to do so. Save him my darling girl, care for him. Save him, to save both of you…save our people…” and with that Mina’s last breath caressed Shay’s rosy cheek, leaving only a memory of her mother’s warmth for her to cherish. Not aware she was holding her cheek now, commotion brought Shay back from that painful memory and she wiped a single tear that threatened to fall. She could not cry now, not here…but how could she care about this man that was her blood but hated her so fervently? How could she ever hope to fulfil her mother’s bidding when she was a child herself at the time and when her grandfather swayed that grieving boy away from her and her father in a matter of days. She failed already…looking at Hendric now there was no doubt about it…but could she still save him from himself? “Sit down, now!!” Corin replied almost growling and Hendric slumped back down into his chair, startled with disgust in his father’s voice. ”To answer your questions boy, your grandfather knows of this decision and while he might not have agreed to begin with, he understands that it is a must. The troops have specifically requested for Shaylin to be their next leader and not one mentioned you. Maybe if you had actually trained with them it would have been different. Just maybe if it had ever occurred to you to show at least an ounce of respect for anyone but yourself, they would have respected you in return. I agreed with their assessment straight away Hendric, as your sister knows how our warriors live and breathe. Your sister deserves this position like no other and a lot more might I add, but it is the best I could do in this matter. I am very well aware you have started seeing yourself as the future grandmaster and a leader who will rule us all long before it was due time for me to stand down from my position, but to do that you have to be willing to go to great lengths for your people, always putting their benefit before yourself. That is something you still have to prove you are capable of and it would not hurt if you learn some subservience in the process. I think you will have an excellent opportunity to do just that now that you and your sister will be made equals. She will stop you from making rushed decisions, and you will use your knowledge of finances to keep this coven striving. But when it comes to matters of war and protection, these are hers alone to decide, guided with myself when I become the elder.” Shay sat there in complete shock as she gave up the idea of leading her warriors a long time ago, the impossibility of it all drilled into her mind by no other than the same grandfather who now agreed to this. How was this even possible…what made Theodore change his mind? “Father I am honoured”, Shay stood up from her chair and dropped to one knee in front of Corin, unable to contain her contentment and above all, gratitude. “I promise to protect our people with every fibre of my being and if the need arises one day, I vow to take my last breath for them.” Shay sworn still kneeling, bowing slightly to her father in a humble display of both respect and affection. Proud with a smile curling his lips, Corin took Shay’s cheeks into his own hands the same way he used to do when she was a baby and looked deep into her emerald orbs, seeing her very soul through them. “You remind me so much of your mother…” his voice barely a wistful whisper. Quickly pulling himself from the revery,, Corin continued. “Shaylin you deserve this, you have trained and fought with these men. You have risked your life trying to protect our people countless times already. Who is better suited or more deserving to lead them if not you? The council saw with what fervour you have trained knowing that you could never truly lead, but still you did it relentlessly, biting at any issue with no less fury than those wolves we share our territory with. You could have become a spoiled princess,” he said while glancing ever-so-slightly at his son. “Alas, you did not, but rather you got up a little earlier and trained a little harder with each passing day. The men felt your devotion and requested you and instead of splitting our people we decided to make you an equal to your brother. Indeed, you will not have the title of grandmaster but you will be anointed the rank of Master general, the first of your name.” ”This is to be inscribed in the scrolls immediately,” Corin turned and addressed the scribe monitoring the meeting, the latter acknowledging his superior with a curt nod. Squeezing her hand in reassurement, Corin urged Shay to rise from her knees and returned to the matters in discussion, scanning the people in the room. “All of this will be announced at the ball in two weeks and I request, no, I order that none of this leaves this room until that point.” “Now the ball has been planned and invitations have been sent out. The Fire coven sent their regards but they will not be able to attend…unfortunately my sister has been having some trouble with her local wolf-shifter packs. On another hand our local wolf pack has gracefully accepted our invitation and Alpha Ivan, along with a small delegation, will be in attendance. It is my hope that we can carry on the friendly alliance we had with his father into the next generation as well.” “Now that we covered that, onto the last point of the meeting…but in no way the least.” Corin’s expression suddenly dropped and changed into a solemn frown, one that made Shay look at him with worry. Here stood a man she admired her entire life, ever strong, ever resilient and above all fearless but now she felt like she was seeing him anew after long absence in which he changed and aged before his time. When did his lines become so visibly deeper on his face? Shay knew that he was no spring chicken, but he looked as if he gained ten years of life in a matter of days. “What could be so grave that he had to share to make him so worried”, Shaylin thought to herself, trying hard to wrap her head around it but much to no avail. Her father had met her mother when he was 30 years of age and while they had tried for children as soon as they were bonded, Gaia did not bless them with a child until Corin was 35 and Mina was 30. The fact that Shaylin was born first had always left a sore taste in her grandfather’s mouth, but as fate had it, not long after her birth her mother had gotten pregnant again and within 11 months her brother had been born. This had sealed her fate until this very moment, but now... “Master general!...I cannot believe it!” Shay felt so much pride knowing the men, her men, had chosen her, but she also knew her brother would not let this go either. Corin sighed soundly and proceeded to whatever it was that drew a thick layer of storm clouds over his demeanour: “The scholars have contacted me and they are sure that the Prophecy of the second moon will occur this year.” The room suddenly felt like all warmth had been sucked out of it while gasps of horror broke all around. ”They have pinpointed the source to an unknown individual. It is with the spilling of his or her blood on the night of the annular eclipse on the summer solstice that will start a series of disastrous events. One that concerns our own kind the most is the entire supernatural world being stripped of magic. The scholars, led by our own Alistair here, are still trying to pinpoint exactly where the sacrifice point is located as the texts speak of an altar of sorts. Our mission is to find this individual whoever he or she might be and unfortunately,” Corin’s voice slightly broke as the very thing he was about to share contradicted the very essence of everything that he is, “dispose of them within the next three months.” Corin concluded much to the dismay of the entire room. “Shay you will be in charge of the team tasked with finding this individual as well as eliminating this threat to our people. Hendric…you are in charge of locating the altar mentioned in the texts and using your connections to find out who or what is destined to inact this prophecy into fulfilling itself. Professor Jackson has volunteered to help you both and accompany Shay in locating this individual.” Professor Jackson stood up and addressed the room: “The said individual and the altar will have matching marks”, he started, shuffling through the pile of scrolls he and Shay brought in, finally finding the one he was searching for. ”From what we have found it will be in the shape of two ovals representing the moons,” he turned the scroll he unravelled for everyone to see. “We are also aware that the sacrifice has to be made by someone who possesses no magical power. That being said, our most recent findings that I didn't yet have the chance to share with even our grandmaster here, show that it probably will not be necessary to kill this individual after all. It might be enough to just find and contain them, holding him or her in a protective custody of sorts until the hour of the prophecy has passed. It is our belief that once the night passes on June 21st, the prophecy becomes unable to be fulfilled.” “We are about protecting all and not just our own”, Alistar added, looking at the man who was more to him than a dear friend…he saw Corin as the son he never had. “ The texts also lead to the conclusion that the one who is to be sacrificed for the prophecy to come to life is destined to be born near the altar within 100 miles radius. The altar will look unlike anything we have seen as it was designed by the gods themselves and it should actually be close to our location. It is beyond any reason how such a place has not been stumbled upon by accident, to be honest….We have searched the entire territory under our control as well as those surrounding us. It leaves only the human city in the East and Alpha Ivan’s land to be searched still, but this will require being covertly handled to not raise any suspicion. We cannot have anyone outside of a selected few aware of what we are looking for or of the prophecy itself…especially not anyone outside of the Circle of covens. It would lead to even more disastrous events…” Professor continued after pausing to take a big gulp of water. “It needs to be stressed out that there is a high probability that the person we are looking for could be a part of Ivan’s pack. While the wolves have their place in our world and even though the process of shifting is induced by the magic of the Moon and their goddess Selene, their species is more governed by genetics then magic. Besides shifting they hold no other magical abilities besides the blessed few, so the prophecy holds no meaning to them...but it can be used by them to gain advantage over us. The wolves protect their own above all else, never forget that and never underestimate them. We must be prepared for war!”Shay stared at herself in the mirror, one part bewildered because of how good she looked and one part almost appalled just because she looked that good. Not that she thought badly of herself or was self-conscious, it was more about her absolutely adoring the tough but comfortable look her usual outfit provided while this was something way out of her comfort zone. If she was about to go to training she would most likely choose one of her gazillion workout leggings or black faux leather spandex pants that looked smoking hot but still provided her with the ability to move freely, combined with any crop top that got under her hand. Never the glossy leggings though, the kind that makes you squint your eyes since you reflect the sun like a stained glass when worn…she hated those with a burning passion. If she had to look presentable, she would just pull the “I’m a soldier” card and show up all “dressed up” in her real black leather pants, topping it up with a white or slate grey t
Shay’s grandfather, Theodore, had gone all out with the decorations for the ball, sparing no expense. An innocent spectator would probably say he wanted to present their coven in the best light, but Shaylin knew the truth; it was a sparkly reminder of their power in order to show supremacy over their werewolf guests who Theo despised above all. He had the arbored walkway leading to the compound lined up on each side with a row of large crystal orbs equally spaced apart and filled with thousands of tiny fairy lights, enchanted so that they emanated the changing icy blue and gold and pinkish hues illuminating the path through the darkness of the forest. Above, the tear shaped vials filled with sparkling liquid in the same hues as lights, floated in the air like a detachment of fairy guards on duty forming a welcoming line and keeping an eye over the delegates in attendance. The liquid in the vials glowed and moved like little wave pools, splashing against the glass walls of their c
Two weeks before the ball Damian had just finished training and was wiping the sweat off his face with his now ripped t-shirt, when he heard Ivan’s voice through the pack’s mindlink, coarse and impatient as always: “All senior members of the pack, meet me in 30 minutes in my office. Don’t make me wait.” “Oh great…what is it this time? Five bucks the Luna dearest is throwing a tantrum again,” Beta Cain laughed. “Probably,” Damian snorted unapologetically. “Moon Goddess help me, I’m so glad I turned down the Gamma position. Could you imagine having to protect HER at all times?” Damian visibly cringed and shook his head as if trying to get rid of a nasty taste on his tongue. “Training pups and being in charge of protecting the pack is something I am definitely more adept in…it feeds my soul really,” Damian exclaimed, emanating love for what he does with a fervour rarely witnessed. Not being able to help himself, he added chuckling shamelessly: “Poor Kairon though, he got stuc

Damian, still under the influence of the witch’s brew, slumped down on his bed with every intention of sleeping in his clothes, already dozing off into the la-la land of dreams. Persistent tugging jolted him out of his alcohol induced semi-coma, only to see that Renee had already unbuckled his
“Shaylin, I would like to introduce you to Alpha Ivan and Luna Renee Thunderridge of the Nightblade pack,” Corin said when Shaylin reached the last step as she descended down to the ballroom, as gracefully as she could. Just as she was about to step down on the safe ground, her heel got caught in the loose thread of the woven carpet that adorned the staircase. Out of all fucking time in the world, it took the very moment she started stumbling forward to finally lock eyes with the one she was looking for; the same one who was at her side in an unnatural speed to steady her flustered self before she fell, and the same one who breathed out incredulously the very last thing she would expect to hear from a werewolf directed at her. “Mate…”, that gorgeous stranger said. Damian caught Shay in the very last moment before it got really awkward for her. His left hand gently welcomed her skin just under her exposed right collarbone, and his right arm around her backside support
“This is obviously a mistake, it has to be!” Theodore breathed out, trying to control his surfacing anger. “My kind does not intertwine with lower species in this way, and even if we did, you cannot surely expect my granddaughter to leave the coven only to join some werewolf pack!! By our laws and considering her position and lineage, a male, if the latter is not a part of our coven, would have to join her here,” Theodore delivered a low blow, not quite choosing his words that drew a warning growl out of almost every member of the werewolf delegation, ready to feed him his own tongue. Only Ivan and Damian, both turning toward the rude intrusion, remained silent watching Theodore’s every move under their eyebrows, like two wolves stalking their prey. One would get very worried seeing two walking mountains looking at them like that, but Theodore really believed himself to be above all other species. Puffing his chest up to cover his initial outbreak and remaining seemingly unbothered w
Not expecting that to be his first question, Shaylin stuttered out of surprise: “W-what?” “Elder Harkenfield called you a Desiderium a few minutes ago,” he explained but then his eyes suddenly became larger than two saucers: “Oh my Goddess, I am so sorry. Was that a rude thing to ask?” It took Shaylin a second to regroup her thoughts that turned to mush ever since she first locked eyes with this handsome stranger, but when she finally realised what he was asking she laughed wholeheartedly, making Damian’s heart and wolf inside his mind swell with joy to call this divine woman their own. A silent oath had been made in Damian’s and Isyr’s shared mind at that very moment, that they would live the rest of their lives doing everything in their power to make her laugh like that every day, whole day. Even if it was her laughing at them, or her laughing with them, this had suddenly become a new reason to live. Still cackling slightly, Shaylin explained: “No! No, for he
Shaylin spun around at the warning and saw Renee raising her hand in an attempt to slap her. With an ease she deflected the Luna's incoming blow and in return slapped her across the face, making Renee perform an admirable pirouette even a prima ballerina would not take shame on, falling on all four with a loud thud; a few strands of her hair getting loose and fall over her face from the low chignon she chose for the occasion. If the slap itself was not enough to make the Luna go even more mad with fury, disrupting her carefully chosen and meticulously implemented look for the evening would surely do it; that is just how shallow Renee was. A menacing growl echoed through the ballroom, making everyone’s jaw drop while staring at the scene in front of them - unsure whether to run and hide or stretch their necks even further for a better view. Ivan, now visibly fuming, stomped over from where he stood with his warriors flanking him, ready to deliver justice for his wronged Luna.“What is
Shaylin did not waste time in responding to the urgency of his kiss as despair mixed with longing so vast clawed at her soul and set the fire ablaze in the pit of her belly, all at the same time, and she kissed him back with the same fervour he surrendered to her with. They were both out of breath in the matter of seconds, and Damian broke off first, smiling as he leaned against her forehead. He had to think of blood splattered across one of his training arenas, anything horrible enough, to calm down the growing beast in his pants. Even Isyr seemed to momentarily forget their quarrel as all of a sudden he was standing in full attention in their shared mind, begging him to continue. But as much as Damian would have liked to ravish his mate on the hood of her car right then and there, he wanted their first time to be special. He was a gentleman like that, and he was gonna make their first time something to remember if he can help it, even if it earned him blue balls before it happened.
Playfully snatching the keys from Shaylin before she could take back her offer, Damian jumped in the Mustang surprisingly fast given it resembled trying to fit a full grown bear in a cartwheel. Wearing a huge boyish grin on his face, Damian put the keys into the ignition and the car quickly hummed in appreciation, as if answering Damian’s command. This car was a dream car for him but until this moment he had no need for something that could carry more than himself and his paws were perfectly capable to take him anywhere he needed to go; it’s not like he ventured out of the boundaries of Nightblade pack’s territory much anyway. Putting the car in drive he slowly made his way away from the pack house. Damian urged himself not to check the rearview mirror as if he was driving away from something he will never go back to; this was not a goodbye, Damian promised himself. This was ‘so long’. Listening to the purr of the engine was almost therapeutic and he wished the times were diff
“And you think Ivan would believe you, Hendric?” Renee found her voice and scoffed. “You actually think he would believe you, of all people, a brother of the one person he hates probably as much as I do just because she hit his precious mate?” The evil glare returned to Renee’s face expression, and she tilted her head with an amused smile. Drawing her index along Hendrics exposed collarbone, deliciously framed with toned pectorals, she made a tsk-tsk sound and threw her head back in a bone-chilling laughter.“I did not know you were capable of such humour Hendric…Don’t you get it by now? Ivan does whatever I want him to do, no questions asked; I just need to whimper and present him with my best doe-eyed look, and he is good to go. There is no way in hell he would ever believe I was unfaithful to him, you know, least of all with you. But,” her face suddenly darkened, “that brings me to your whore sister,” Renee gritted through her teeth as her laughter turned into a growl. “What is yo
Hendric’s POVA steady, deep-throated rumble of Hendric’s Harley “Elle”, as he named it, on the ride back to Fairglen, the Amber Coven’s village and sanctuary, was nothing but a white noise in his ears; he did not enjoy that low purring of hers this time. To Hendric it seemed as if the world had stopped spinning for a while or he himself was the one stuck in some kind of limbo, a living mire of guilt that suddenly enveloped him and began to mercilessly drag him down, so much that he felt dizzy. He rode his metal pet in body, but his mind was entirely elsewhere.Hendric drove off right after shaking hands with Damian, not wanting to risk either him or Shay getting even more awkward with thank you’s for him offering Damian hospitality and safety within their village until all the mess is sorted out. His offer surprised even himself, but thinking about it as he rode home like hell itself was after him, how could he not offer it? Realising that all these past years he was pushing away th
Hendric’s POVHendric’s brown leather boots connected with the gravel covering the driveway leading to the packhouse right at the exact same moment when his Harley fell silent with a deep grumble, leaving only the sound of wind rustling the leaves in the last rays of sunlight before the dusk took over the skies. Not even the birds chirped in the canopies of the trees, and Hendric deemed it strange.Taking down his helmet, once again he could not stop the snicker of disapproval that spread across his face as he took in the modern pack house villa and the parking area in front of it. To say it was the state of art would be understatement. By now he knew Renee enough to know that all the high-end details on the pack house were most probably carefully chosen by none other than herself, probably by the only criterion she deemed worthy: the most expensive choice was always the right choice. The enviable vehicle fleet in the driveway on the other hand, was Ivan’s pride and joy.Renee had a g
Shaylin’s POV Shaylin looked at Damian who stood there motionless, looking into the direction where Ivan and Renee left, entirely still and quiet. “Wait, Hendric. I will wait for him outside to get his things. I can’t stand being here for a second longer…just give me a sec and then let’s go.” “Damian?” Shaylin called to her hiraeth, but it seemed he was lost in thought as there was no reaction. She tried again as she gently placed her hand onto his arm, “Damian?” “Yes, sorry,” he immediately turned around, and took her hands into his, “I was…I don’t know what I was doing. Did you say something?” Damian said, swallowing hard, looking into their intertwined fingers like they were the only threads of life force keeping him attached to his sanity right now. For a wolf to lose his pack, to be cast out just like that…it could be mind shattering; for some of lower rank, even lethal. “You need to get your things, Damian. I will wait for you outside. Is that ok? Or do you need me t
Cain’s POVCain looked at the audience around the foyer and he didn’t like it in the slightest.“Everyone who is not of the Gamma rank or above, please leave. Also no one is to mention anything to anyone until we have had the opportunity to speak to Charlotte’s family. They have surely felt the bond with her break, but they do not know the details…much like no one here knows exactly what happened and how, and until we have the opportunity to determine all the facts, you will all return to your homes or to your assignments, and grieve the loss of our packmember in privacy as you see fit. Everyone will be notified of the hour of the parting ceremony via mindlink. Now go.”Cain watched as everyone rushed to obey his command as some pulled back to their own rooms in the packhouse and others set to get out of the entryway; some made effort to say goodbye to Damian and some barred their necks to their Alpha and Luna, pretending Damian is not even there. Suddenly Cain’s mind acknowledged the
Neoma’s POV“Ivan, what have you done?!!” Cain’s equal parts bewildered and enraged voice broke the dangerous silence, one that you can feel crawling through your insides; it came almost as a relief to hear anybody speak at that point. Everyone else seemed like they lost their voices and were entirely thrown off their feet, unsure of what to do or how to even react; Ivan was the Alpha everyone respected, but Damian was loved by all and was such a vital part of the pack.“Do you question your Alpha, Beta Cain?!!” Ivan turned on his blood and his subordinate, concentrating all the blind rage he felt into his words, poisoning them. “This traitor,” he spat the word and pointed his finger at Damian, not even looking at him as he continued, “has chosen where his loyalty lies and it’s not with the loving pack that gave him family and meaning to his miserable life. If you do not agree, Beta, you have three options: challenge me and take the pack, leave alongside with him or shut the fuck up.
“WHO DARED LAYING A HAND ON MY MATE?!” Damian roared as he came barging in through the front door and rushed up the stairs. Grabbing the man nearest to Shaylin around the throat and squeezing with all the eagerness of a wounded beast, he made the guy turn blue within seconds.“Damian, stand down, now! My men were following orders given directly by me.”“And your orders were for them to hurt my mate?! Have you lost your f*cking mind?! You have some serious explaining to do, Ivan!” Damian was seconds away from losing it, his grip tightening around the man's throat whose face now reached a shade of greyish blue. Damian’s strong hands held Butterfinger’s neck like claws threatening to pierce his neck right then and there, thick black fur starting to rise from his skin.“Put him down, Damian! That is an order!!” Ivan was by his head warrior in a matter of seconds, snarling straight into his face. “Look around, if you will. Your mate stands accused of killing poor Charlotte here.”Damian lo
